An Indian batter coming in at number three and delivering against Pakistan in an ICC tournament is not a new sight for the Indian fans. Be it the former men’s team captain Virat Kohli or Sunday’s hero Jemimah Rodrigues – both have stamped their authorities on their arch-rival with some style. It was during India’s clash against Pakistan at the MCG in October last year when Virat produced a magnificent knock of 82* that saw India cross the line with one ball to spare. Inspired by that, Jemimah played with almost same intent and helped her team draw first blood during the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

During the chase, the Indian women's team&nbsp;was in a comfortable position when the young Rodrigues entered the scene. Wearing the aggressive gear, Jemimah was right on&nbsp;top of the bowlers from the ball one. She calculated the chase very well and hit the fifth gear when the right time had come. Accompanied by the recently-crowned U-19 T20 World Cup winner Richa Gosh, the pair stitched a 58-run stand for the fourth wicket and saw their team home in the 19th over itself.

Speaking during the presser after her heroic knock, Rodrigues recalled watching Kohli’s masterful innings against Pakistan, and how it inspired her to win the big game on her own.

"India v Pakistan matches are always a little bit more special -- we spoke about it in the team meeting," Jemimah said after India vs Pakistan match in Cape Town.

"Growing up we always watched these matches. I remember watching the match at the MCG where Virat Kohli played such an extraordinary knock. We did speak about it but we also just wanted to go out there and put our first win on the board. We just wanted to go out, play the same cricket and with the same intensity as usual," the right-hander added.

Chasing 160 at the iconic MCG, India was reeling at 31 for four inside seven overs at one stage. With Kohli at one end, India fans were hopeful of watching their side walk away with the win – and well, that only happened. After an exciting middle-over passage, it all fell down to be needing 28 off nine balls.

Kohli then smashed two of the best sixes to Pakistan’s ace seamer Haris Rauf and pulled the game in India’s favour. Despite some drama in the last over, he helped India chase down the target with four wickets in hand.

Meanwhile, the women’s team will next face the Windies on Wednesday, February 15th at the Newlands in Cape Town.

While Mumbai Indians splurged INR 1.5 crores for the 22-year-old Yastika Bhatia, Bangalore-based franchise went two steps ahead and bought in-form Richa Gosh for INR 1.9 crores.

The Indian women’s cricket team started their 2023 T20 World Cup campaign on a high by beating arch-rivals Pakistan by seven wickets at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday. Jemimah Rodrigues starred with the bat scoring an unbeaten 53 while Under-19 T20 WC winner Richa Gosh also contributed with a quickfire 31 off 20 balls. Indian team on right track but some work needs to be done – Harmanpreet

India’s star captain Harmanpreet Kaur lauded the young guns in Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Gosh – both of whom played sensationally&nbsp;as the women’s team chased down 150 inside the final over.

"Pakistan batted well but end of the day we wanted to win the game," captain Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation.

"Jemimah and Richa batted really well. All the players are keen to do well for the team. Whoever is getting an opportunity is pushing themselves. Good sign for us. Every match is important, no matter the opponent, but obviously Pakistan is a big game. We will love to have some time in the nets. We want to work on a few things," she added.

Meanwhile, batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan didn’t get off to a great start but made up for it in the end all thanks to an unbeaten 68 from the captain Bismah Maroof. She was well accompanied by Ayesha Naseem, who scored 43 and helped Pakistan put up their highest total in T20 World Cup history.

India’s chase was right on the track with Shafali Verma providing the perfect start in absence of Smriti Mandhana. Harmanpreet also contributed later on with 16, but the fate of the game was decided by&nbsp;two future superstars who held their nerves and completed a chase with utter ease.

Placed in group B, India’s next challenge will be the Windies team against whom they will take the field on Wednesday, February 15th at Newlands in Cape Town.

Nonetheless, nothing is final in this regard and a final decision will be taken by the IPL chairperson (with the BCCI's current treasurer Arun Dhumal set to take over the post)&nbsp;and the board office bearers in due course of time.

Jemimah Rodrigues was at her ruthless best, smashing an unbeaten 75 off 45 balls as India out-batted an inexperienced United Arab Emirates by 104 runs in the Women's T20 Asia Cup, here on Tuesday.

Jemimah and Deepti Sharma (64 off 49 balls) added 128 runs in 13.3 overs after UAE had briefly sent some shivers down the Indians' spine, reducing the tournament favourites to 20 for 3 inside the fifth over.

However, the gulf in class between the two teams became more and more evident with India posting a challenging 178 for 5 in 20 overs.

The UAE team, which is also represented by 11 players of Indian origin, never even bothered to be competitive in its chase, finishing the quota of 20 overs at 74 for 4.

India have now won three matches on the trot and are firmly on their way to grab a semi-final berth although the big games against Bangladesh and Pakistan are yet to be played.

Kavisha Egodage (30 not out, 54 balls) and Khushi Sharma (29, 50 balls) were engaged in a 59-run stand where all they did was avoid getting out. No doubt, India stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana was pleased as punch after the win.

"Jemi and Deepti batted brilliantly for their 100-run partnership to get us back in the game. They (UAE) batted well, there was one dropped catch, but they batted really well to not give their wickets away," Mandhana said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Rodrigues put up a boundary-hitting exhibition as she whacked 11 fours and a maximum in her counter-attacking 53-ball innings to help India post 150 for six on a wicket where batters struggled due to low bounce.

The Indian bowlers then struck at regular intervals to bowl Sri Lanka out for 109 in 18.2 overs. The Indians were better than their Sri Lankan counterparts in all three departments. India were not off to the best of starts after being asked to bat.

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (10) was the first to be dismissed, while her fellow opener Shafali Verma's (6) batting woes continued as she became spinner Oshadi Ranasinghe's (3/32) first victim of the day.

But Rodrigues, who is coming off a wrist injury, was in control from the beginning, timing the ball to perfection. She kept sending the ball to the fence every over and punished the Sri Lankan bowling attack all over the field.

The skipper got a reprieve in the 15th over when she was dropped off Sugandika Kumari (1/26) but couldn't capitalised on it as Ranasinghe had her stumped in the next over. Sri Lankan bowlers then staged a comeback in the death overs with a flurry of wickets.

While Rodrigues continued to score at a good pace, going past her previous career-best T20I score of 72, her fabulous innings soon came to an end off a Chamari Athapauththu (1/8) slow and low delivery as the Indian was bowled.

Dayalan Hemalatha chipped in with an unbeaten 13 towards the end while Richa Ghosh (9) slammed a six.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set aside a window in March 2023 for the first-ever edition of women's Indian Premier League (IPL) and the process to get the show on the road is underway, as per board president Sourav Ganguly. As per ESPNCricinfo, the board has made changes to its women's domestic cricket calendar to make way for women's IPL.

The women's season that generally goes on from November to April has been advanced by a month, with the season set to begin on October 11 with T20 competition and end in February 2023 with an inter-zonal ODI competition.

Since 2018, BCCI has been organising the Women's T20 Challenge. What started as a one-off exhibition match between two teams in the first season is now a three-team competition. Many players from outside India have also joined the competition. But despite this, the clamour to have a much bigger competition just like men's IPL is growing among players and fans for a while.

Earlier in February this year, Ganguly had stated that the women's IPL would be held next year. "We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women's IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men's IPL. 
 
Owners of IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and Barbados Royals, The Knight Riders Group have expressed their interest in getting involved in the tournament and owning a women's IPL team.

The inaugural edition of the women's Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which is scheduled to happen alongside the men's tournament later this year will feature three teams, including Trinbago Knight Riders owned by Knight Riders Group. BCCI is expected to hold a discussion on matters related to women's IPL at its annual general meeting in September this year. Much of the planning around the tournament will be around sale of its media rights.

Due to India's improving and great performances at major ICC events over the recent years, the enthusiasm for women's cricket in India is at a never-seen-before high. The latest of these performances was the Women in Blue clinching a silver medal in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Moreover, senior Indian players like Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and former Indian skipper Mithali Raj have been supportive of the idea of women's IPL.

Raj in fact expressed a desire to come out of retirement to participate in the tournament. "I am keeping that option open. I have not yet decided. There are a few more months to go before the Women's IPL happens. It would be lovely to be part of the first edition of the Women's IPL," she had said while speaking on ICC's 100% Cricket podcast earlier in July.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has recommended using a smaller ball to make women’s cricket more attractive, while India’s Jemimah Rodrigues believes a shorter pitch is another innovation worth exploring.

The ball used in women’s cricket is slightly smaller and lighter than the one used in the men’s game but Devine favoured “a little trial and error” and see if that worked.

“I think if we are stuck with traditional formats, we’d be missing out on a lot of new players, new kids, new athletes to the game,” she said in an innovation webinar organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“I’m probably a big fan of looking at a smaller ball, but keeping the pitch the same size, where I think pacers are going to be able to bowl quicker, spinners are going be able to turn the ball more,” the all-rounder added.

Rodrigues saw merit in a shorter pitch to speed up the game and win more fans.

“We can also be open to (a shorter pitch), try it out,” said the 19-year-old.

Jemimah Rodrigues has become the third Indian batter to play Kia Super League (KSL) after Yorkshire Diamonds signed her for the upcoming fourth and final edition of the league.

Rodrigues, Mandhana move up to second and sixth in ICC rankings

The in-form Smriti Mandhana and teen sensation Jemimah Rodrigues hammered New Zealand's clueless bowling attack to steer India to an emphatic nine-wicket triumph in the opening ODI of a three-match series here Thursday.&nbsp;

The 22-year-old Mandhana (105) and the 18-year-old Rodrigues (81 not out) put together a batting masterclass after the bowlers did the job for India by bundling out New Zealand for a below-par 192.&nbsp;

Competing in their first series after the furore that followed the team's T20 World Cup exit in the semifinals last year, the Indians produced a thoroughly clinical performance to eke out the comfortable victory in 33 overs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While Mandhana, fresh from winning the ICC women's cricketer of the year award, slammed her fourth ODI hundred, Rodrigues notched up her maiden international half-century.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"I think it's great to start the series with a win and wonderful to see openers get an over 100-run partnership. I think lot of girls do look up to Mandhana.&nbsp;

She had a great 2018 and she is continuing and it gives a lot of confidence to the dressing room," India captain Mithali Raj said in the post-match presentation.&nbsp;

"But easy catches should have been taken. We are definitely not overconfident," she added, referring to the shortcomings she noticed.&nbsp;

Mandhana and Rodrigues stitched together the highest ever opening wicket stand against New Zealand -- a 190-run partnership that stood for 32.2 overs. Rodrigues was making just her fifth appearance in national colours.&nbsp;

Mandhana's 104-ball knock included nine fours and three sixes, while Rodrigues managed nine hits to the fence.&nbsp;

"The wicket was great to bat on. We played according to the merit of the balls and it was a great innings ," she said.&nbsp;

After winning the match, India's young talented player Jemimah Rodrigues interacted with media and said that the team needs to continue the momentum and strive to do even better in the semi-final.

"I think it's important, not just because it's Australia but for ourselves and our team, because we have the momentum," said Jemimah.

"It plays a huge impact on our team, we look forward to it (semi-final) but won't get carried away by it and (will) try to do even better in the semi-final," she added.

The 18-year-old denied on being asked whether India have ticked all the boxes ahead of the semi-final, she said there is always scope for improvement.

Adding to that she mentioned, "But I think we did pretty well, from the first match until today I've seen a lot of improvement in our bowling and our fielding."

Rodrigues made her Twenty20 International debut on February, 13, 2018 against South Africa. While speaking to the media she hailed the teammates and coached for putting in efforts.

"Our teammates, everybody, the coaches, everybody is putting in a lot of effort, working really hard and it's paying off, so we'll just try and get better."
