<p>Two Swedish skiers were trapped in an avalanche at Affarwat peaks in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>While one of the skiers was successfully rescued, the other was reported dead.</p>

<p>Despite an avalanche warning, the skiers were allowed to ski from the 2nd phase of Gandola Affarwat.</p>

<p>Authorities here issued an&nbsp;avalanche warning for the upper, snow-covered, hilly areas of north Kashmir including the Gulmarg hills.</p>

<p>Fresh snowfall on the upper reaches of Gulmarg&nbsp;damaged the 2nd phase Gandola cable car ski slopes.</p>

<p>Although skiing from 13000ft high Affarwa hills became riskier, the skiers managed to reach the hills.</p>

<p>A small intensity snow avalanche occurred in the area and caught both the skiers.</p>

<p>The skiers were in Gulmarg for a short trip.</p>

<p>Gulmarg is known as one of the best ski resorts in the world.</p>

<p>It&rsquo;s wild slopes attract thousands of skiers from all across the globe.&nbsp;</p>

'Our enemy is not across border but among ourselves,' says Farooq Abdullah 

<p>Advocating a &quot;politico-military&quot; approach in dealing with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat today called for political initiative to go hand-in-hand with military operations in the state.</p>

<p>Gen Rawat, who has followed a hard-line approach in tackling terrorism, said the armed forces operating in the state cannot be &quot;status quoist&quot; and must evolve new strategies and tactics to deal with the situation.</p>

<p>In an interview to PTI, the Army chief said, &quot;The political initiative and all the other initiatives must go simultaneously hand-in-hand and only if all of us function in synergy, we can bring lasting peace in Kashmir. It has to be a politico-military approach that we have to adopt.&quot;</p>

<p>Rawat also asserted that there was room for ramping up heat on Pakistan to cut the flow of cross-border terror activities, clearly indicating that the Army will continue its policy of hot pursuit in dealing with militancy.</p>

<p>In October, the government had appointed former Intelligence Bureau chief Dineshwar Sharma as its special representative for a &quot;sustained dialogue&quot; with all stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>&quot;When the government appointed an interlocutor, it is with that purpose. He is the government&#39;s representative to reach out to the people of Kashmir and see what their grievances are so that those can then be addressed at a political level,&quot; the Army chief said.</p>

<p>Asked whether pressure could be increased on Pakistan to force it to stop sending terrorists to the state, he said, &quot;Yes, you cannot be status quoist. You have to continuously think and keep moving forward. You have to keep changing your doctrines and concept and the manner in which you operate in such areas.&quot;</p>

<p>Gen Rawat said the Army will have to evolve new strategies and new tactics to deal with the situation. At the same time, he said an overall approach was required to deal with the Kashmir issue.</p>

<p>Since beginning of last year, the Army pursued an aggressive anti-terror policy in Jammu and Kashmir and, at the same time, forcefully responded to all ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops along the Line of Control with a tit- for-tat approach.</p>

<p>&quot;Military is only part of the mechanism to resolve the Kashmir issue. Our charter is to ensure that the terrorists who are creating violence in the state are taken to task and those who have been radicalised and are increasingly moving towards terrorism are prevented from doing so,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Gen Rawat said some youths continue to be radicalised and are joining militancy. The Army has been trying to maintain pressure on terror groups, he said.</p>

<p>The Army&#39;s aim is to ensure that it continues to maintain the pressure on the terrorists and those fomenting trouble in Kashmir, Gen Rawat said.</p>

<p>&quot;But at the same time, we have to also reach out to the people,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Asked whether the situation in Kashmir has improved since he has taken over as the Army chief a year ago, Gen Rawat said, &quot;I am only seeing a marginal change in situation for the better.</p>

<p>&quot;I do not think it is time to become over confident and start assuming that the situation has been brought under control because infiltration from across the borders will continue.&quot;</p>

<p>The LoC has remained volatile in the last year. According to official figures, 860 incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops were reported in 2017 as against 221 the year before.</p>

<p>He said by keeping these nations with it, India would be able to make sure that the assertiveness that China is showing against it is balenced in some way.</p>

<p>He said India is dealing with China at different levels including through diplomatic engagement.</p>


He also called for changing India's focus from the western frontier to the northern one in the wake of growing Chinese presence in India's neighbourhood.

Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Friday said that schools in Jammu and Kashmir are instilling wrong information into students' mind by showing them a separate map of their state and not as one Indian map. "In the schools in Jammu and Kashmir, what teachers are teaching should not be taught. In schools, there can be seen two maps - one of India another of Jammu and Kashmir. <p>Goods worth Rs 3432.94 crore were traded between business establishments of Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) via two LoC points of Chakan-Da-Bagh and Salamabad along the Indo-Pak border during last three years. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The information was provided by Jammu and Kashmir Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga in a written reply to a question of National Conference MLC Shehnaz Ganai in the state Legislative Council today. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The value of items traded by the Indian businessmen in the state during the three-year period amounted to Rs 1676.77 crore while that by the PoK businessmen stood at Rs 1756.17 crore for the same period, the minister said. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Items worth Rs 2367.82 crore were traded via Salamabad crossing point in Uri area of Baramulla district (Kashmir) along the Indo-Pak border and Rs 1065.12 crore worth trade was conducted via Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch district of Jammu region, Ganga elaborated. &nbsp;</p>

<p>As many as 21 items are traded along these points between traders of PoK and J&amp;K since the trade started in 2005, he said. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The state government, in terms of cabinet decision, has conveyed its agreement for establishing the banking facility for cross-LoC trade to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, he said. &nbsp;</p>

<p>A final decision, however, is to be taken up further by the Indian government in consultation and mutual agreement with the Government of Pakistan, he said. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, the state government has also conveyed its support and agreement to the opening of seven additional trade routes and two additional contact and meeting points as recommended by the working groups, he said. &nbsp;</p>

<p>A final decision in this regard is to be taken by the governments of the two countries, the minister added. &nbsp;</p>

<p>He said the state has requested the Centre to include 21 more items in the list of the trade items. He added that a final decision is to be taken following due process of the bilateral diplomatic protocol.</p>

Jammu and Kashmir: Goods over Rs 3,432 crore traded via two LoC points in 3 years

"Two militants have been killed so far in an anti- insurgency operation in Larnoo area of Kokernag in Anantnag district," an Army official said. According to reports, a group of terrorists is believed to be hiding in a residential premises in the area. On Monday, a terrorist was killed in an encounter with a police party in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir. <p>Delhi recorded the season&#39;s lowest minimum temperature at 4.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below the average, the Met office in the national capital said.</p>

<p>Dense fog delayed 45 north-bound trains, while eight were rescheduled and 22 were cancelled by the Railways.</p>

<p>The temperature during daytime, however, rose by 2-3 degrees in Himachal, including in Una, which recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 25.8C.</p>

<p>Punjab, Haryana and their common capital Chandigarh remained under the grip of intense cold conditions. Narnaul recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the states at 0.2C.</p>

<p>The minimum temperature remained up to five degrees below the normal in parts of Punjab and Haryana, the MeT office in Chandigarh said.</p>

<p>The minimum temperature in Chandigarh was 3.4C.</p>

<p>In the desert-state Rajasthan, Bhilwara, Alwar, Churu, Sikar, Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh and Pilani districts reeled under the cold wave.</p>

<p>Alwar was recorded the coldest place in the state at 0.3C, followed by 1.5C in Sikar, 2C each in hill station Mount Abu and Churu, and 2.2C in Sriganganagar.</p>

<p>In Uttar Pradesh, the Met office in Lucknow said the day temperature fell markedly in Bareilly division. The lowest minimum temperature in the state was in Meerut at 2.9C.<br />

The Met office has forecast dry weather in Uttar Pradesh during the next 24 hours, with shallow to moderate fog at a few places over eastern and western UP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While addressing the state assembly, Abdullah said today that they are not aware of Dineshwar Sharma&#39;s role in Jammu and Kashmir. He questioned whether Dineshwar Sharma was a spokesperson, an interlocutor or a special representative.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Omar Abdullah hit out at the state government saying that they blamed him for the creation of &quot;Burhan Wani&quot;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mannan Bashir Wani, a research scholar from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has reportedly joined a terrorist group in Kashmir.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The research scholar, who hails from Kupwara in Kashmir, was today expelled by the Aligarh Muslim University authorities in the wake of reports alleging that he may have joined a terrorist group.&nbsp;A team of senior AMU officials sealed Mannan Basheer Wani&#39;s room this morning immediately after they received a letter from the Aligarh Superintendent of Police about his alleged &quot;nefarious&quot; activities, university officials said.</p>

<p>Four policemen were killed and one&nbsp;seriously injured in an IED blast in Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir&#39;s Baramulla district on Saturday.</p>

<p>The blast took place in the Sapore&#39;s main market. The explosive device was placed near a shop in a lane between the &#39;Chotta Bazaar&#39; and &#39;Bada Bazaar&#39;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Security agencies have flashed an alert after an SUV with a &quot;JK&quot; numberplate belonging to the CRPF was stolen from outside a camp of the force late last month, official sources said.</p>

<p>The alert, warning against misuse by terrorists ahead of Republic Day celebrations on January 26, has been issued by multiple agencies, including the Delhi Police, the CRPF and central agencies.</p>

<p>Official sources said a white Sumo Victa of the Central Reserve Police Force was stolen from outside a camp of the force in R K Puram area on the intervening night of December 29-30.</p>

<p>The official number plate of the stolen four-wheeler is &#39;JK 02A W5441&#39;, they said.</p>

<p>The vehicle, with a &#39;Police&#39; sticker, was stolen by at least three people that night, sources said, referring to CCTV footage of the incident.</p>

<p>The alert issued by security agencies, especially to agencies and forces based in Kashmir, said the vehicle could be misused for a possible sabotage attack or fidayeen raid.</p>

<p>Intelligence inputs have already stated that &quot;militants can use a vehicle laden with explosives to attack a camp (of security forces/agencies) in the run-up to Republic Day celebrations...&quot;, it said.</p>

<p>The CRPF, too, issued an alert and asked all its units in Jammu and Kashmir and north India to be on the heightened vigil and take extra precautionary measures.</p>

Lesser terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir under BJP rule: Report

<p>Army Chief General Bipin Rawat today said an &quot;aggressive strategy&quot; has to be maintained in dealing with ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and indicated that the force has been responding effectively to such incidents.</p>

<p>He said this responding to a question on the Army&#39;s strategy to deal with repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>&quot;They are doing it (violating ceasefire), but we are responding to it, but an aggressive strategy has to be maintained (&#39;Wo kar rahe hain, hum bhi kar rahe hain, lekin aggressive strategy to rakhni padegi na),&quot; he told reporters, on the sidelines on an event at the South Block.</p>

<p>According to official figure, a total of 820 incidents of ceasefire violation by Pakistani troops were reported in 2017 as against 221 in the year before.</p>

<p>On the issue of insurgency in several parts of the country, the Army Chief said it is on a decline in the Northeast while in Kashmir it is &quot;cyclical&quot; in nature.</p>

<p>&quot;The moment peace tends to return to the Valley, there is an interference from across the border,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Earlier, General Rawat interacted with 27 youths from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, who are here as part of a national integration tour.</p>

<p>When one of the youths asked why the Indian Army does not &quot;finish&quot; the Pakistani side, he replied, &quot;If we finish (militarily) Pakistan, it will become like Afghanistan, riddled with all sorts of problems which Afghanistan is today facing.&quot;</p>

<p>Since beginning of the year, the Army pursued an aggressive anti-terror policy in Jammu and Kashmir, at the same time, forcefully responding to all ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control with a tit-for- tat approach.</p>

<p>Rawat also said neighbouring nations have to &quot;learn to live with each other&quot;.</p>

Himachal government offers compensation to Pulwama martyr

<p>Pakistani troops today targeted forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Noushera sector in Jammu and Kashmir for nearly an hour, police said.</p>

<p>The small arms firing from across the border targeting forward posts in Noushera sector started around 9 am.</p>

<p>Indian troops retaliated and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued till 10 am, a police official said.</p>

<p>There was no report of any casualty in the incident, the official said.</p>

<p>The latest ceasefire violation by Pakistan comes five days after Pakistani troops opened fire from across the border, leaving four Army personnel dead and another soldier injured in Keri sector of Rajouri on December 23.</p>

<p>Indian troops also killed three Pakistani troops and injured another in retaliatory action at Rukh Chakri sector in Rawlakot on December 25.</p>

<p>On December 24, Pakistani troops had targeted forward posts and villages in Shahpur sector of Poonch district.</p>

<p>Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a total of 881 ceasefire violations this year, highest in the past seven years, along the LoC and the International Border, resulting in the death of 34 people.</p>

<p>According to officials, Pakistan violated the ceasefire along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir 771 times till December 10, and 110 times along the IB till November-end.</p>

<p>In these incidents of firing from across the border, 30 people -- 14 Army personnel, 12 civilians and four BSF personnel -- were killed.</p>

<p>The truce between India and Pakistan along the International Border, the Line of Control and the Actual Ground Position Line in Jammu and Kashmir came into force in November 2003.</p>

<p>India shares a 3,323-km-long border with Pakistan of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LoC fall in Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The government order, signed by IAS officer and Secretary to the government Khurshid Ahmad, also bars the employees from posting inflammatory and extraneous messages in an online community with an intent of provoking readers into emotional response.</p>
