A BSF soldier and four civilians have lost their lives&nbsp;in a ceasefire violation in Jammu and Kashmir&nbsp;on Friday.

The Pakistani troops opened fire in J&K's RS Pura sector and Arnia sector killing two civilians and one soldier from RS Pura and two civilians in Arnia.&nbsp;

The soldier killed in the violation hailed from Jharkhand and is survived by a three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.&nbsp;

In the wake of the&nbsp;ongoing gunbattle in the&nbsp;region, the RS Pura sector administration has declared a shut down of schools within 3 kms&nbsp;of the border.&nbsp;

According to government reports, Pakistan had violated the ceasefire agreement over 350 times along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir till early March.

The year 2017 had seen an unprecedented spike in the ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the line of control.

The Pakistani army had violated the ceasefire agreement over 860 times killing over 15 soldiers while injuring 58 army&nbsp;personnel last year.&nbsp;

Terrorists attacked a grenade towards a Police station in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama on Tuesday.

The grenade attack, however, did not hit the target and exploded&nbsp;outside the station.&nbsp;

The police held a counter-attack with aerial firing.

No casualties&nbsp;were reported in the attack.

Earlier in the day, a police officer succumbed to his injuries in a suspected&nbsp;terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district.

The policeman was killed after the terrorist opened fire on his vehicle.&nbsp;

In a similar incident, a policeman was killed on Friday after he was shot dead by terrorists in Budgam.&nbsp;

Terming as very serious&nbspthe attempts by Pakistani forces to push armed terrorists across the border ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Director General of Border Security Force (BSF) K K Sharma said on Tuesday efforts were on to locate the infiltrators.

Five infiltrators sneaked into Hiranagar sector probably through a tunnel on Sunday night and efforts are on to detect and neutralise them, Sharma said.

Referring to the killing of a BSF jawan in firing from across the border, Sharma said the sacrifice would not go in vain and assured "appropriate action" against Pakistan.

&nbsp"Pakistan is our hostile neighbour and tries to push terrorists and violates ceasefire regularly. BSF does no initiate (ceasefire violations) from this side but whenever Pakistan initiates, we give them a befitting response,"Sharma told reporters at the BSF headquarters in&nbsp

Referring to the latest incidents along the international border, Sharma said a group of five infiltrators may have sneaked in, while another attempt was scuttled.&nbsp

There is a possibility that a group of five (terrorists) managed to sneak into this side through a tunnel on Sunday night. We have not so far detected any tunnel but are looking for it. The anti-tunneling exercise is going on,? he said.&nbsp

He said the presence of a group, comprised of five members, was confirmed through HSTI imagining. I am sure they will be detected and neutralized, the BSF chief added.

He said this (infiltration attempts and Pakistani firing) was a "very serious incident" because it had happened ahead of the scheduled visit of Prime Minister to the state on May 19.&nbsp"The BSF always gives a befitting reply to Pakistan. This time it is not going to be any exception. The martyrdom of our jawan will not go in vain and we will take appropriate action,"&nbsphe said.&nbsp

Asked about intelligence reports suggesting presence of terrorists at launching pads across the border, he said there is no second thought that a lot of terrorists were present at the launching pads and Pakistan is attempting to push them into this side.&nbsp&nbsp

&nbsp&nbspOn a smart fencing project, he said it was nearing completion. I am hopeful that it will be in place either by this month end or in the first or second week of next month and it will be inaugurated by the Union Home minister, Sharma said.

"We have planned to roll out the project to make the Pakistan border safer and secure and completely covered by the technology,"&nbsphe said.&nbsp

Technology is a big advantage as humans cannot see beyond 100 meters or listen beyond 50 meters, he said.

After the induction of smart fencing, we can pick up enemy movement three kilometres away, he said.

The apex court was hearing petitions&nbspchallenging Article 35A along with&nbspthe main writ petition filed by a group called 'We The Citizens'.

Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar, appearing for one of the petitioners, said it was strange that in J&K, a person who had migrated to Pakistan before 1947, could come and settle down under law but those who were residing there for generations cannot get a government job. He said students were debarred from getting admission in government medical college there even after qualifying the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), only because he or she was not a permanent resident of the state.&nbsp Another counsel appearing for the petitioners said it was a "human issue" as around five lakh people had migrated out of the state, were residing in places like Delhi and cannot go back to the valley, PTI reported.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said today that "studios" have been set up in Pakistan to promote propaganda and manage content on social media to mislead the people of Kashmir, but the Centre is taking effective steps to counter them.

The minister of state in the Prime Minister's Office said a "perception is created in these studios on a daily basis and false messages are spread".

"Intelligence agencies have intercepted recorded false messages like encounter (between militants and security forces) has started and people are requested to reach the spot (to help militants escape)," Singh told reporters here.

"It is a reality that studios were set up in Pakistan under a well-planned strategy to manage propaganda on social media to mislead the people of Kashmir," he said.

Replying to a question on the challenges posed by social media, especially in Kashmir, Singh said the Union Home Ministry has taken a serious note of the matter and is chalking out a strategy to counter the spread of false information.

On the Karnataka Assembly elections, he expressed confidence that the BJP would form the next government in the state. The Union minister said the people of Karnataka have made up their mind to vote the BJP to power in the state.

"Rahul Gandhi has unveiled himself by stating he is ready to become the prime minister of the country and thus spoke of the dynasty rule," he said, referring to the Congress president's assertion on Wednesday that he is ready to occupy the post if his party emerges as the "biggest" party in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Singh said the youth constitute India's 70 per cent population and they have "tasted the real democracy" under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rule.

"I have full faith that the people Karnataka will express their faith in the leadership of Modi and help him to take India to new heights...By becoming part of the New India," he said.

The 27-year-old jawan, identified as JD Mandeep Kumar, was part of the 182 Battalion of CRPF.

The encounter took place in the late hours of Friday when troops of 55 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), and 182 and 183 Battalion of CRPF were carrying out a joint cordon and search operation in the village, on a specific information about the presence of terrorists in the area.

The operation was called off in the wee hours of Saturday and the troops returned after the terrorists fled from the scene, taking advantage of the heavy stone pelting and darkness.

All departments have been directed to stay alert, he said.

Pakistan has raked up the issue of alleged human rights violation in Kashmir at the UN's Committee on Information to which India raised strong objection, saying it was irrelevant to the work of the panel.

Pakistan's delegate Masood Anwar, addressing a session of Committee on Information yesterday, raised the issue of Kashmir alleging that human rights violations are taking place against the people of Kashmir.&nbsp

"The world we live today is marred with conflict and strife while we maintain unity in fighting terrorism and extremism. Countering the narrative of this twisted ideologies is imperative,"Anwar said during a General Debate on Committee on Information.

He said the UN's Department of Public Information (DPI) can play an important role in defusing tensions and promoting interfaith harmony.

"Human rights violations, in particular, are a matter of serious concern to the international community," he said.&nbsp

He urged DPI to highlight situations where "grave violations of human rights are taking place", especially against the Rohingya, Kashmiris and Palestinians.&nbsp

India strongly rejected Anwar's reference to Kashmir, saying his remarks are irrelevant to the work of the Committee.

"We have seen another attempt here today to make reference to issues extraneous to the agenda of the Committee. We completely reject these remarks as they have no relevance to the work of the Committee," S Srinivas Prasad, Minister in the Indian Mission to the UN, said during the session.

In his statement, Prasad said India supports the DPI's work on counter-terrorism. ?India is opposed to all forms of terrorism and believes that effective cooperation among countries is necessary to combat the threat," he said.&nbsp

He referred to the production of the documentary "Surviving Terrorism: Victim's voices' on the survivors of the Norway terror attack of 2011, saying civilians affected by terrorism is an "untold story" and hoped that the DPI will pick up more such stories from terrorist violence affected countries.&nbsp

He, however, voiced concern over declining financial resources that have presented a serious constraint on the ability of the DPI to carry out its mandated tasks especially in non-official languages. DPI needs to look at innovative ways to raise resources beyond the regular budgetary allocations, including through voluntary contributions to continue and expand its global outreach activities, especially in the widely-spoken non-official languages, he said.

Prasad voiced appreciation over expansion in the number of languages in which UN guided tours are offered. He pointed out that guided tours of the world body have been very popular with Indian tourists in the city, urging the addition of a guided tour in Hindi to facilitate Indian tourists.&nbsp

Prasad also noted that the Department facilitated the on-location filming of Bollywood film 'Padman' at the United Nations headquarters in November 2017.&nbsp

Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman was the second movie after 'Half Girlfriend' to use the UN as a backdrop of its story. The film is based on menstrual hygiene, an issue relating to the Sustainable Development Goal number four that focusses on achieving inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

Separatists, under the banner of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), had called for a strike to protest the killings.

The strike affected normal life in the Valley as most of the shops and other business establishments were shut, while public transport was off the roads, officials said.

Schools and colleges remained closed while universities postponed the examinations scheduled to be held Tuesday.

The much-awaited reshuffle likely to see some new faces from the BJP.

The BJP had asked all its nine ministers to resign on April 17 to enable the party to bring in new faces.A day before the reshuffle, Nirmal Singh resigned as Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Mehbooba Mufti-led government can have a maximum of 25 ministers, including the chief minister, out of which 14 portfolios are with the PDP and the remaining with the BJP.&nbsp;
