The novel Coronavirus has claimed 4,000 lives and infected over 40,000 people in Italy even as doctors and nurses are struggling to cope with the high influx of patients pouring in every day.

Patients rushing to the hospitals are being placed on beds in waiting rooms by overworked healthcare workers.

In the main hospital at Bergamo, the area hardest hit by the deadly virus, the situation is severe. Patients are lined up in a narrow ward in more numbers than it can hold. Nearly 50 to 60 patients are coming in every day in a serious condition, describing their symptoms as flu.

Bergamo is the epicentre of the virus outbreak in Italy. In recent weeks, the Lombardy province has become the site of hundreds of coronavirus deaths.

The cemetery is so overwhelmed by the number of dead that military trucks transported 65 bodies to a neighbouring region for cremation this week.

Experienced medical professionals, who are used to working under intense strain, have never been this stressed in their careers.

Meanwhile, Italy imposed further draconian restrictions on public life on Friday in an increasingly desperate effort to halt coronavirus infections after the death toll leapt by 627 in a single day, by far the biggest 24-hour rise recorded anywhere.

The mayor of the most badly affected city, Bergamo in the affluent northern region of Lombardy, said the true number of fatalities from the pandemic in his area was four times higher than was officially reported so far.

"Many of the elderly are dying in their houses or in old people's homes, without anyone testing them either before or after they die," Giorgio Gori told the Huffington Post.

He added that a dozen mayors of other cities had confirmed the same thing to him.

The show must go on, they said. In life or face of death, they did not. But that did not stop a couple from getting married in Naples in Italy — which has become the new global epicentre of COVID-19.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan, but spread to different parts of world, and concentrated to a great extent in Italy.

Now when two people get married in the West, they kiss to seal the ceremony. The newly married couple found a “novel” way to steal a kiss. Diego Fernandes, 46 and Deni Salgado, 30, wore surgical masks, and shared a kiss to celebrate their special day.

But sadly, there was no crowd of cheering guests.

The two held their wedding ceremony with only witnesses since public gatherings are banned as part of Italy's lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.

'We took it lightly': Italians warn the world about COVID-19 pandemic in a shocking video

The coronavirus outbreak has precipitated a crisis on the world with more than 1,70,000 cases having been recorded so far. The World Health Organisation has declared the outbreak a pandemic, and severe measures are being taken across the world to curb the spread of the virus.

India, on its part, has also been taking desperate measures to control the spread of the novel virus, and COVID-19 -- the disease it causes. The Central government on Monday announced it would not welcome arrivals from European nations, including the United Kingdom, and Turkey.

This includes Indian citizens too.

In a statement on Tuesday, Air India said, "All pax travelling to UK and Europe, may kindly note that in view of the DGCA instructions regarding travel and visa restrictions related to the COVID-2019, all flights to/from UK and Europe will operate only till 18th March 2020 & will remain suspended from 19th to 31st March, 2020."

This piece of information came as a shock to thousands of Indian students studying abroad.

Reports, however, say the delay is temporary, as this order applies only till March 31.

Reports add the temporary ban is just a way to stem the spread of the virus, and has been undertaken as many positive cases from India were traced back to have a history of travel to or from European countries.

Of these countries, Italy is the worst affected (though after China). The ministry of external affairs has, to this end, assured confirmed regular evacuations.

On Sunday, over 210 Indians were brought to India, all of whom will be quarantined for 14 days.

India has carried out evacuations from several countries in the past few weeks. It has brought back its citizens from China, Japan and Iran as the number of cases of coronavirus continue to rise in these countries.

In a statement on Tuesday, Air India said, "All pax travelling to UK and Europe, may kindly note that in view of the DGCA instructions regarding travel and visa restrictions related to the COVID-2019, all flights to/from UK and Europe will operate only till 18th March 2020 & will remain suspended from 19th to 31st March, 2020." This piece of information came as a shock to thousands of Indian students studying abroad. Reports, however, say the delay is temporary, as this order applies only till March 31. This applies to every one. Indians can go back to India through other countries. — India in the UK (@HCI_London) March 16, 2020 × Reports add the temporary ban is just a way to stem the spread of the virus, and has been undertaken as many positive cases from India were traced back to have a history of travel to or from European countries. Of these countries, Italy is the worst affected (though after China). The ministry of external affairs has, to this end, assured confirmed regular evacuations. On Sunday, over 210 Indians were brought to India, all of whom will be quarantined for 14 days. 211 students & 7 compassionate cases departed by AI flight #Milan.🙏all those who helped us through this difficult situation. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte warned Monday that his country was entering "the riskiest weeks" and urged a coordinated European response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"European coordination on health and economic measures is needed," Conte told the Corriere Della Sera newspaper ahead of a planned videoconference Monday between Group of Seven (G7) leaders.

"It is time for courageous choices and Italy can offer a significant contribution as the country that was the first in Europe to have experienced such a widespread of the virus," he said.

Italy was the first EU member state to shutter schools and almost all businesses to try to slow a global pandemic that has killed 1,809 people in the Mediterranean country since last month.

It has recorded more than half the deaths officially reported outside China.

Conte said "no new prohibitions are needed" but urged everyone to stay home as much as possible and only venture outside alone.

"Scientists tell us that we have not yet reached a peak. These are the riskiest weeks and we need the utmost precaution," said Conte.

Italy is facing two simultaneous threats to its healthcare system.

"We can no longer afford behavioural errors," said Conte.

Coronavirus distancing Italians from their beloved coffee

Italians are beating the social isolation imposed by the country's coronavirus lockdown by taking to their windows and singing in unison, with videos of the phenomenon racking up thousands of views online.

Since Monday a series of decrees from the Italian government have drastically limited citizens' movements, with vast swathes of the economy shut down and people instructed to leave the house only when strictly necessary.

All cultural events have also been suspended, prompting some celebrities to start organising online performances and museums to put virtual tours online.

In it, residents sing the traditional "Canto Della Verbena" about the city from their windows, including a rousing verse with the words "long live our Siena!".

Italian singer Andrea Sannino posted a compilation on his Instagram feed of people singing his song Abbracciame ("Embrace Me") at their windows in the southern city of Naples, his hometown.

"A day I will tell my children and grandchildren about," the singer wrote, adding: "Thank you for making me cry floods of tears!"

On Friday evening in several districts of Rome, music and singing could be heard coming from people's windows, including renditions of the national anthem.

A message circulating on WhatsApp had encouraged people to sing specific songs on certain days, including the anthem on Friday.

Another tune heard on Friday night was Grazie Roma, a popular song from the 1990s, which includes the words: "Tell me what it is which makes us feel like we're together, even when we're apart."

The slogan is accompanied by a picture of a rainbow often drawn by children at home as school is cancelled.
