According to a Hamas spokeswoman, the action comes after Qatar made attempts to "prove to the American people and the world that the claims made by [US president Joe] Biden and his fascist administration are false and baseless."

Amid an escalating war between Israel and Hamas, in which 5,185 people have been killed so far, Saudi Arabia's Intelligence Chief Prince Turki al-Faisal claimed that Israel has been funnelling "Qatari money" to the Palestinian terrorist group, which controls the Gaza Strip.

The accusation of Prince Turki al-Faisal against Israel comes days after Reuters published a report in which it claimed that the financial aid of Qatar to the Palestinians living in Gaza passes through Tel Aviv.

As per the report, the funds are getting electronically transferred from Qatar to Israel after which they are hand-carried by Israeli and United Nations (UN) officials over the Gaza Strip.

Slamming both Israel and Hamas for the war, the Saudi Intelligence Chief said that in such a situation there are no heroes, but only victims.

The Western nations were further deplored by Prince Turki al-Faisal for crying over Israelis killed in the war but "refusing to express sorrow" over Palestinians who have also lost their lives.

The visuals of two Israeli-American women being brought into Israel, nearly two weeks after they were taken hostage and were being held captive by Hamas, has stoked reactions of hope for more such releases. So far, the total number of individuals held hostage by Hamas is numbered up to 203, with the final number likely to rise, according to Israel's Defense Forces (IDF).

Judith Tai Raanan and her daughter Natalie Shoshana Raanan were back in Israel late Friday, the Israeli government said.

The two women were at the Nahal Oz kibbutz, less than two kilometres from Gaza, when Hamas members broke through a border fence on 7 October, and slaughtered over 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and abducted more than 200 others to hold them hostage in Gaza.

The development was also described positively by aid organisations.
Hostage crisis in Israel-Hamas war: What next?

In the immediate future, Qatar, which also hosts two top Hamas leaders, is expected to engage with both Israel and Hamas for the release of hostages. While Israel has called for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages, a Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson said that their efforts are aimed to ensure "the release of all civilian hostages from every nationality, with the ultimate aim of de-escalating the current crisis and restoring peace".

Asked by WION's Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Sidhant Sibal, the IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said that the number of people held hostage by Hamas may well go above 203.

"The working assumption is that they're alive. And I would add that we expect Hamas to take care of their well being, they need to be released and be released now," Lerner told WION.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu has demanded that the International Committee of the Red Cross have access to the hostages."

"But I don't want to comment beyond that because I don't want to jeopardise them or the families of 203 people that are in despair and their life has been torn into pieces in the aftermath of this attack for the last 14 days," he added.

Is aid into Gaza dependent on release of Israeli hostages?

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement released on Wednesday evening, had indicated the interconnected nature of the three demands he put out to the US President Joe Biden during latter's wartime visit to Israel.

"First, I demanded the return of our captives, and we are working together for their return in every possible way," Netanyahu said. "Second, until their return, we demand Red Cross visits for our captives. Third, we will not allow humanitarian assistance in the form of food and medicines from our territory to the Gaza Strip."

Netanyahu, however, had added that it would "not prevent humanitarian assistance from Egypt as long as it is only food, water and medicine for the civilian population located in the southern Gaza Strip." It had further added that such aid would be allowed "as long as these supplies do not reach Hamas. Any supplies that reach Hamas will be prevented."

At the time of filing this report, the impasse over supply of aid into Gaza, even through Egypt's Rafah crossing, has turned into a deadlock. This is even after a wartime visit to Israel by Joe Biden and his Secretary of State Antony Blinken's week-long West Asia trip had humanitarian access to Gaza as one of the top foreign policy objectives.

Instagram lands in controversy as Palestinians' bio adds 'terrorists' on translation

President Joe Biden returned to the United States from Israel, without meeting Arab and Palestinian Authority leaders, despite days of shuttle diplomacy by Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Israel-Palestine war: US President Joe Biden returns from Israel

In the midst of the growing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, global financial markets are challenged with uncertainty fuelled with concerns regarding inflation and geopolitical risks.

Recent reports highlight this unease, showing that a significant amount of inflows have been taken out of the iShares MSCI Israel exchange-traded fund (ETF), which is the largest ETF with investments in Israeli stocks, due to the ongoing situation in Gaza. Additionally, the Israeli shekel has reached its lowest value in nearly eight years compared to the U.S. dollar.

Israel's economy, once considered one of the strongest in the world, is now in a precarious position. The stability and growth it has built over the years are at risk as the country's central bank grapples with the challenging task of predicting the economic consequences of the ongoing conflict.

In this edition, we explore the history of Israel's economic development since its independence in 1948 to the complex challenges it faces today.

Post-Independence struggles (1948-1967)

The immediate years following Israel's declaration of independence in 1948 were marked by a host of complex economic challenges. The country was embroiled in a war with its Arab neighbours, demanding substantial financial resources for military efforts. Simultaneously, Israel faced the formidable task of absorbing a massive wave of immigrants and providing for the basic needs of this growing population.

To meet these demands, Israel implemented strict austerity measures and turned to inflationary government finance, which was kept in check through price controls and rationing of essential goods. However, addressing the housing crisis and employment shortages brought on by the population surge proved to be prolonged endeavours.

The early Israeli economy was fundamentally shaped by two pivotal factors: immigration and military expenditures. The influx of immigrants brought not only human capital but also substantial capital inflows, contributing to economic growth. Concurrently, Israel actively pursued self-sufficiency and embarked on a journey of industrialisation, laying the foundations for a more resilient economy.

Post-Six-Day war boom (1967-1980)

The Six-Day War of 1967 had a profound and, in many ways, positive impact on Israel's economy. The acquisition of new territories, including the West Bank and Gaza Strip, significantly altered the economic and political dynamics in the region. Israel assumed responsibility for both the economic and political life in these areas, resulting in the establishment of Jewish settlements and the unification of the Arab sections of Jerusalem with the Jewish sector.

This period witnessed substantial growth in high-tech and defence industries, with foreign aid and investments, particularly from the United States, playing a crucial role in sustaining Israel's economy. The post-war boom fuelled the nation's economic development, and the construction of Jewish settlements in the occupied territories emerged as a critical element of the region's economic landscape.

Economic crisis and stabilisation (1980-1990)

The 1980s were marked by significant economic turmoil in Israel, characterised by high inflation and mounting budget deficits. To counter the inflationary spiral and bring economic stability, Israel embarked on a comprehensive economic stabilisation plan in the mid-1980s. This ambitious program included exchange rate stabilisation, budgetary restraint, wage and price freezes, and tight monetary policies that succeeded in significantly reducing the inflation rate.

Technological advancements and export-orientation (1990-2000)

Starting in the 1990s, Israel began a transition towards a more market-oriented economy. The emphasis on innovation and technological advancements resulted in the rapid growth of the high-tech sector. Israel's contributions to the global technological landscape gained international recognition, making it an attractive destination for investors and entrepreneurs alike. Post-Independence struggles (1948-1967) The immediate years following Israel's declaration of independence in 1948 were marked by a host of complex economic challenges. Post-Six-Day war boom (1967-1980) The Six-Day War of 1967 had a profound and, in many ways, positive impact on Israel's economy. Economic crisis and stabilisation (1980-1990) The 1980s were marked by significant economic turmoil in Israel, characterised by high inflation and mounting budget deficits. Technological advancements and export-orientation (1990-2000) Starting in the 1990s, Israel began a transition towards a more market-oriented economy. The emphasis on innovation and technological advancements resulted in the rapid growth of the high-tech sector. Israel's contributions to the global technological landscape gained international recognition, making it an attractive destination for investors and entrepreneurs alike. During this period, trade liberalisation and globalisation played an increasingly pivotal role as Israel sought to establish a solid presence in the global economy.
