These narratives come amid a climbing death toll in Gaza&nbsp;and international pressure for a ceasefire. On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron also demanded a "lasting ceasefire" in Gaza. As per Macron's office, the leader made this demand during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"France will work in the coming days in cooperation with Jordan to carry out humanitarian operations in Gaza," said the French presidency in a statement.

<h2>Is Soleimani's&nbsp;killing the reason?</h2>

In his remarks regarding the Monday (Dec 25) killing of Brig. Gen. Razi Mousavi by an Israeli airstrike in Syria, IRGC spokesman Ramazan Sharif made the connection between Hamas' attack and the killing of Soleimani.

He said that the October attack was "one of the revenge" for the slaying, as reported by The Times of Israel.

Sharif also said that the IRGC was 'well aware' of the reasons behind the recent killing of Mousavi. However, the IRGC spokesperson stressed that the killing would not affect the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps campaign "against the Zionist entity".

Calling the killing an "act of terror", the organisation also vowed that the revenge "will be decisive at the right time and place". Previously, Iranian officials, including President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, have also vowed revenge for Mousavi’s death.

Heavy firefights also raged again around Gaza City in the north, while an air strike wounded 11 people near Rafah, a far-southern city crowded with internally displaced people, witnesses said.

Gaza's spiralling humanitarian crisis has amplified calls for an end to the hostilities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly vowed to keep up the campaign to destroy Hamas, an Islamist group blacklisted as a "terrorist" organisation by the United States and the European Union.

"This war's objectives are essential and not simple to achieve," armed forces chief Herzi Halevi said Tuesday. "Therefore, the war will continue for many more months."

AFPTV footage showed Palestinians who had been sheltering in a UN-run school in central Gaza's Nuseirat refugee camp fleeing south, seeking safety from the bombardment.

Displaced Gazans "don't know where to go", said one of them, declining to be named. "First, we're displaced to Nuseirat, then to Rafah."

Even schools "are no longer safe" in Gaza, said the man.

"A solution must be reached... Implement a ceasefire instead of bringing in aid."

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas,&nbsp;in an interview on Egyptian television, charged that the Gaza war "goes beyond a catastrophe and a genocide".

"Netanyahu's plan is to get rid of the Palestinians and the Palestinian Authority," said Abbas, who is based in the occupied West Bank.

The UN Security Council, in a resolution last week, called for the "safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance at scale".

The resolution, which did not call for an immediate end to the fighting, effectively leaves&nbsp;Israel&nbsp;with operational oversight of aid deliveries.

In Rafah, hundreds turned up at the Abdul Salam Yassin water company carrying baskets, pulling handcarts and even pushing a wheelchair stacked with bottles to queue for clean water.

"This was my father's cart," said Rafah resident Amir al-Zahhar. "He was martyred during the war. He used it to transport and sell fish, and now we are using it to transport fresh water."

Elsewhere in Rafah, people split logs and stacked kindling as the lack of fuel forced them to burn wood for cooking and to keep warm.

Internet and telephone services that were cut on Tuesday were gradually being restored in central and southern areas of Gaza, the Palestinian telecommunications company Paltel said on X, formerly Twitter.

Violence has also flared across the West Bank, with more than 310 Palestinians killed by Israeli troops or settlers since October 7, the health ministry there said.

Internet, phone services again disrupted across Gaza, Israel says war will last ‘for many more months’

Israel's finance ministry is apparently planning to increase defence spending by at least 30 billion shekels ($8.3 billion) next year amid the ongoing war against Hamas, Bloomberg reported.&nbsp;

In a document presented to parliament on Monday (Dec 25), the ministry said the overall budget for 2024 will probably have to total 562 billion shekels.&nbsp;

The mentioned amount is more as compared to the 513 billion shekels spending plan, that was first approved last May.&nbsp;

The ministry said an additional 10 billion shekels will be needed to cover the evacuation of around 1,20,000 people from Israel's northern and southern border areas.&nbsp;

It said that it needs higher budgets for police and other security services, and the reconstruction of settlements destroyed during Hamas's attack on October 7 in addition to the military spending.&nbsp;

A report by the news agency Reuters, citing Israel's finance ministry, mentioned that the war will likely cost it at least another 50 billion shekels ($14 billion) in 2024.&nbsp;

While briefing lawmakers, the ministry's deputy budget commissioner Itai Temkin said the war was expected to stretch at least two months into 2024, which means until February.&nbsp;

He informed the Knesset Finance Committee that this would increase total defence spending by more than 48 billion shekels above what had been budgeted.&nbsp;

Total budgetary spending in 2024 would rise to 562.1 billion shekels from a planned 513.7 billion and lead to a budget deficit of 5.9% of gross domestic product, up from a target of 2.25%.&nbsp;

He also it was not currently possible to plan for the possibility that the war against Gaza's Palestinian Hamas Islamists would stretch into March or beyond.&nbsp;

As quoted by Reuters, he said: "It is possible that later in the year we will have to come and update it and we will have to come with updates as the war drags on."&nbsp;

Parliament approved a special war budget of over 30 billion shekels for 2023 to assist support the war and compensate families affected by the October 7 cross-border Hamas strikes that triggered the war, as well as missiles launched from Gaza and Lebanon.&nbsp;

He informed the Knesset Finance Committee that this would increase total defence spending by more than 48 billion shekels above what had been budgeted. Total budgetary spending in 2024 would rise to 562.1 billion shekels from a planned 513.7 billion and lead to a budget deficit of 5.9% of gross domestic product, up from a target of 2.25%. As the Israel-Gaza war stretches to its three-month mark, reports of Palestinians facing torture at the hands of the Israeli army have come to light. On Sunday, recently freed detainees alleged that the Israeli forces were torturing Palestinian civilians in their custody in the Gaza Strip. A Gaza medic corroborated this narrative. Hamas, as per the news agency, said that the freed Palestinians were admitted to Al-Najjar hospital, in the southern city of Rafah upon their release.

Nayef Ali, a 22-year-old, who claims to have been detained in Gaza City's eastern Zaitun suburb and later taken to an Israeli detention facility said: "They (Israeli troops) tied our hands behind our backs for two days."

To support his claims, he showed the news agency cuts on his wrists and other parts of his body.

"We were not allowed to eat or drink, neither were we allowed to use the toilet," he said, adding, "There were only beatings and beatings."

He also alleged that Palestinian detainees were held in a "freezing cold" area along the border with Israel.

"They threw cold water on us before transferring us to a prison, where it was again torture and beatings."

Another former detainee, 55-year-old Khamis al-Bardini, also alleged torture by Israeli soldiers, and said that during his detention there were "beatings during the day", while they poured "cold water on our heads through the night".

Rejecting the claim, the Israeli army said that all the detainees were "treated in accordance with international law".

Pentagon, speaking on the incident told WION that the drone was “fired from Iran.” Notably, it is the first time that Washington&nbsp;directly accused Tehran of targeting ships.&nbsp;

The attack, as per US officials, occurred at approximately 10:00 am &nbsp;(local time) in the Indian Ocean, 200 nautical miles off India's Gujarat coast.

It said that the “motor vessel CHEM PLUTO, a Liberia-flagged, Japanese-owned, and Netherlands-operated chemical tanker” was hit by “a one-way attack drone fired from Iran.”

In a statement to WION, the Pentagon said “No U.S. Navy vessels were in the vicinity. U.S. Naval Forces Central Command remains in communication with the vessel as it continues toward a destination in India.”&nbsp;

It added, “This is the seventh Iranian attack on commercial shipping since 2021.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom-based maritime security firm, Ambrey said that the ship was “Israel-affiliated” and was en route from Saudi Arabia to India.&nbsp;

The Wall Street Journal citing the Dutch company operating the vessel said that it had connections to Israeli shipping tycoon Idan Ofer.&nbsp;

The recent attack off the Indian coast came amid a flurry of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea by the Yemen-based Iran-backed Houthi rebels amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

The militant group had warned that they would target all ships heading to Israel, regardless of their nationality, and warned international shipping companies against dealing in Israeli ports.&nbsp;

The Indian Navy said that it responded to a request for assistance by dispatching an aircraft and a warship to ensure the safety of the involved ship and its crew. They added, “The ICGS Vikram was deployed on the patrol of the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone when it was directed towards the merchant ship in distress. All crew are safe which includes around 20 Indians.”&nbsp;

The Indian Navy is “now investigating whether the drone used to attack the vessel was launched from long range or from a nearby vessel. The vessels operating in the area where the attack took place are being checked.”

The latest incident follows a similar suspected drone attack on an Israeli-owned cargo ship in the Indian Ocean last month.
