In response to the veto, US&nbsp;Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, voiced strong condemnation, accusing Russia and China of obstructing diplomatic efforts and prioritising their own interests over the humanitarian imperative.

She criticised their refusal to condemn Hamas's attacks on Israel and characterised their actions as "cynical" and "petty".&nbsp;

"For all the fiery rhetoric, we all know that Russia and China are not doing anything diplomatically to advance a lasting peace or to meaningfully contribute to the humanitarian response effort," she told the council after the vote.

The US wanted Security Council support for a ceasefire to require Hamas to release the hostages they held in Gaza.&nbsp;Palestinian Hamas terrorists&nbsp;killed 1,200 people and took 253 captive in their Oct. 7 attack, according to Israeli data.

China and Russia veto US-proposed UN Gaza 'ceasefire' resolution

The Israeli military released chilling footage of what is said to be the inside of a huge tunnel dug up by the Hamas terrorist group where five Israeli hostages were found dead.

The clip shows the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) gathering at the entrance of the tunnel, which is said to be&nbsp;more than 32ft below schools and hospitals in Jabalia city, north of the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military believes that the passage, which was discovered during the military raid carried out to ‘dismantle' the Hamas operation, was the “underground headquarters” of the terrorist group in North Gaza.

Israeli military releases video of huge Hamas tunnel where five hostages were found dead

A senior Israeli envoy on Saturday (Dec 16) held a meeting with the prime minister of Qatar, a key mediator in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, news agency Reuters reported citing sources.

As per reports, sources from Egypt suggested that Israel appeared to be more open to a new deal with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The meeting that took place between David Barnea and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was the very first one between senior officials from Israel and Qatar.

In another sign of a possible breakthrough, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would convene his security cabinet and deliver a televised statement on Saturday evening.

<h2>Hostages killed by Israeli army</h2>

In another development from the ongoing conflict, the Israeli army on Saturday said that at least three hostages were mistakenly killed by the Israeli army were carrying a white flag and also cried for help in Hebrew.

Family members of other hostages held in Gaza urged the Israeli government to pause the fighting and make a truce to secure their release.

Yotam Haim, Alon Shamriz and Samer El-Talalqa, all in their 20s, were shot during operations in Gaza City on Friday, prompting demonstrations in Israel.

Army spokesman Daniel Hagari said that during fighting in the Shejaiya district of Gaza City, troops "mistakenly identified three Israeli hostages as a threat and as a result, fired toward them and the hostages were killed".

An army official said the hostages were all "without shirts" and had "a stick with a white cloth on it", but a soldier felt threatened and opened fire.

"Two are killed immediately, one is injured and runs back into the building," the official said, adding that the soldiers heard "a cry for help... in Hebrew".

Thirteen other members voted in favour of the draft resolution moved by the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom abstained.&nbsp;

The voting came after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a rare move, formally warned the 15-member council of a global threat from the war, which has now been going on for over two months.

"What is the message we are sending Palestinians if we cannot unite behind a call to halt the relentless bombardment of Gaza?," Deputy UAE U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab asked the council. 
 
"Indeed, what is the message we are sending civilians across the world who may find themselves in similar situations?"

The United States, defending its veto, said that the resolution still held a call for an unconditional ceasefire.

"This resolution still contains a call for an unconditional ceasefire... it would leave Hamas in place able to repeat what it did on October 7," said US deputy UN representative Robert Wood.

Wood further denounced the UAE stating that the draft resolution was a rushed, imbalanced text "that was divorced from reality, that would not move the needle forward on the ground in any concrete way."

"We do not support this resolution's call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war," said Wood.

UK's UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said that her country abstained because there was no denunciation of Hamas.

"Israel needs to be able to address the threat posed by Hamas and it needs to do so in a manner that abides by international humanitarian law so that such an attack can never be carried out again," she told the council.

Israel's UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan did not address the Security Council after the vote, but in a statement said: "A ceasefire will be possible only with the return of all the hostages and the destruction of Hamas."

Washington, being the permanent member of the Security Council, can veto any resolution.

Ahead of the vote, Guterres had said that "the brutality perpetrated by Hamas can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people."

The Israeli Defense Forces has received a second list of hostages who will be released by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Saturday (Nov 25) under a truce deal, the office of Israel's prime minister wrote in a statement on Friday.

Israel receives second list of hostages to be released by Hamas on Saturday

Hamas stated that a group of 13 Israeli&nbsp;hostages, who were taken captive in the October 7 attack carried out on Israel, were handed over as part of the temporary truce on Friday (Nov 24). 
 
"Half an hour ago, the prisoners were handed to the Red Cross who will take them to the Egyptians,” said a source close to Hamas at the Rafah crossing, while speaking to AFP. 
 
A source from Hamas' military wing confirmed the handover, further stating, "This is the first group under the agreement." 
 
In the first tranche, 13 women and child hostages were released after 49 days of captivity and handed over to the Red Cross, from where they headed back to Israel.

This was part of the deal which was finalised after weeks of talks which involved Israel, Palestinian militant groups, Egypt, Qatar and the United States. 
 
During the four-day temporary truce, Hamas is set to release at least 50 hostages, which leaves around 190 captives still in the hands of militants. In exchange, Israel is releasing 39 women and children from Israeli prisons, which equals 150 Palestinians prisoners, as per reports.

Hamas releases 24 hostages on first day of amid temporary truce in Gaza

Matan Meir, a member of the production crew of the hit Israeli TV series Fauda, was killed in the line of duty while fighting Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

The TV series’ official account on microblogging site X condoled the demise of the 38-year-old soldier who served as the Sergeant Major General (Reservist) of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

"We are devastated to share that one of our Fauda family members, Matan Meir, was killed in action in Gaza. Matan was an integral crew member. The cast and crew are heartbroken by this tragic loss. ‘Fauda’ series production crew member dies while fighting Hamas in Gaza

More than 200 Indian Jews have either reserved or active combat duty since the October 7 terror assault, Jerusalem Post reported citing Shavei Israel non-profit organisation.

According to the organisation, they are members of the Bnei Menashe community.

The Bnei Menashe are a community of more than 9,000 people from the northeastern Indian states of Mizoram and Manipur. They practice a form of biblical Judaism and claim descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel.

The NGO on Monday (Nov 6) claimed that 75 of the recent immigrants from India have enlisted in combat units, while 140 were called up for reserve service across Israel.

<h2>Bnei Menashe community fights for Israel&nbsp;</h2>

Shavei Israel organisation aims to foster ties between&nbsp;Diaspora communities&nbsp;across the globe and the State of Israel. They claim to have been lobbying for the mass immigration of the Bnei Menashe community.

“Since the war broke out, Shavei Israel has received hundreds of requests from young community members in northeastern India asking to make Aliyah (immigrate) immediately," Michael Freund, founder of Shavei Israel non-profit, told The Jerusalem Post.

"Not only that – they are asking to join the IDF immediately to fight shoulder to shoulder with their brothers and sisters."

According to him, the Menashe people in India have been for years requesting to immigrate to Israel.

Of the 215 immigrants from India, 99 per cent of all men of military age joined Israel's fight against the Hamas terrorist group, while 90 per cent of women enrolled in&nbsp;National Service.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to heed calls for an immediate ceasefire in the besieged Gaza City as continuous bombing leaves a trail of destruction.

India abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly on Friday (Oct 27) on a Jordan-led resolution that had no mention of Hamas in it.&nbsp;The resolution sought a ceasefire in Gaza and "unhindered" humanitarian access to the war-ravaged region.&nbsp;

While explaining India's decision to abstain from voting, India's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Yojna Patel said that there is no justification for terror and the country is shocked by the October 7 terror attack on Israel.&nbsp;

India also called for the release of hostages held captive in Gaza by the Hamas Islamist terror group and welcomed all the efforts of de-escalation of tensions terming the humanitarian crisis in Gaza concerning.&nbsp;

The envoy also restated India's two-state solution for the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict.&nbsp;Over 1,400 people were reportedly killed in Israel after the brutal onslaught by the Palestinian terror group Hamas.

To find a resolution to the ongoing Israel-Hams war, UNGA's 193 members met in the emergency special session to vote on a&nbsp;resolution moved by Jordan which had the backing of over 40 countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, South Africa, and Russia.&nbsp;

<h2>Resolution adopted with 120 nations voting 'yes'&nbsp;</h2>

The "Protection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations" resolution was adopted with 120 nations voting 'Yes', 14 'No', and 45 abstaining. 
 
In addition to India, other countries including Australia, Germany, Canada, Japan, Ukraine and the UK also abstained from voting on the resolution. The US said that not mentioning Hamas in the resolution is equated to "omission of evil".

<h2>Canadian amendments to resolution</h2>

Prior to the voting, an amendment proposed by Canada and backed by the US was considered. India voted yes for the Canadian amendment to Jordanian proposal on Israel Palestine resolution that condemned the Hamas terror attack on Israel. However the resolution was not adopted since it did not get a 2/3rd vote in UNGA.&nbsp;

At the UN, India abstained from the Jordanian resolution that did not explicitly condemn Hamas terror attacks on Israel but supported the Canadian amendment that did the same.

India abstained from voting in the UN General Assembly on Friday (Oct 27) on a Jordan-led resolution that had no mention of Hamas in it.&nbsp;The resolution sought a ceasefire in Gaza and "unhindered" humanitarian access to the war-ravaged region.&nbsp;

In addition to India, other countries including Australia, Germany, Canada, Japan, Ukraine and the UK also abstained from voting on the resolution. The US said that not mentioning Hamas in the resolution is equated to "omission of evil".

India abstains from vote on Jordan-led UNGA resolution that didn't mention Hamas

Israeli soldiers have reportedly found North Korea-made artillery from Hamas militants, indicating Pyongyang’s involvement in the illegal supply of weapons to militant groups as a way to fund its nuclear weapons programme.

Although the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) is yet to make an official statement, AP news agency reported that Israeli forces seized an F-7 rocket-propelled grenade—a shoulder-fired weapon that fighters typically use against armoured vehicles—from the battlefield.

The report further states the weapon was first used when Hamas militants launched an unprecedented attack on October 7.

The confirmation first came from South Korean officials on Tuesday (Oct 17) who based their assertions on a military analysis of media photos and video of the Hamas attacks.

The officials identified the terrorists using F-7 rocket-propelled grenade launchers, which they claimed is another name for North Korea’s RPG-7 launcher. &nbsp;

<h2>North Korea supplying&nbsp;weapons to fund its weapons programme&nbsp;</h2>

“Hamas is believed to be directly or indirectly linked to North Korea in various areas, such as the weapons trade, tactical guidance and training,” a senior member of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, who did not want to be named, told reporters at a special press briefing in Seoul, reported the Yonhap news agency.

The official further claimed that North Korean-made 122mm multiple rocket launchers and artillery shells were also found on the Israel-Gaza border.

“There is a possibility that North Korea could use Hamas' attack methods [in the event of] a surprise invasion of South Korea," he said.

Moreover, Hamas has previously released many propaganda videos and photos showing its fighters with North Korea’s Bulsae guided anti-tank missile, reports AP news agency.

<h2>North Korea denies claims&nbsp;</h2>

A militant video examined by the AP showed one fighter carrying the F-7. Weapons seized by the Israeli military and shown to journalists also included that red stripe and other design elements matching the F-7.

Pyongyang, however, last week through its state-run KCNA news agency dismissed claims that Hamas used its weapons as “a groundless and false rumour” orchestrated by the United States.

Not only in the Hamas-Israel war, the West also suspects that North Korea has supplied ammunition, artillery shells and rockets to Russia for its war on Ukraine.

Last week, the White House said that North Korea recently delivered more than 1,000 containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia.

This truce after the latest round of fighting, like previous wars, has ended inconclusively, with Israel claiming heavy damage to Hamas, but unable to stop their rockets (killing 12 Israelis and over 200 injured). Hamas also claims victory, despite heavy casualties (230 Palestinians killed, over 1900 injured), facing challenges of rebuilding Gaza, poor confidence with troubled population (58000 Palestinians fled their homes) already suffering poverty due to coronavirus pandemic. &nbsp;

Gaza is controlled by Hamas (post-Israeli disengagement in 2005), which also operates militant wing and West Bank with 167 enclaves of Palestinians are governed by Fatah (claiming to represent erstwhile Palestinians Liberation Organisation) amidst 230 Israeli settlements governed by Israel.

Both factions (Hamas and Fatah) have different ideologies and differences, but form a Palestinian Unity Government under President Mahmoud Abbas since 2014, negotiating peace through Quartet (US, Russia, EU and UN). The competing claims to Jerusalem, which is crucial to Christians, Jews and Palestinians is the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and have repeatedly triggered incidences of violence in the past, like the present one.&nbsp;

Trigger for Current Crisis &nbsp; &nbsp;

The renewed violence started on 6 May, when Palestinian protests began over an anticipated decision of the Supreme Court of Israel (Yet to be announced), on the eviction of six Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, a neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem, resulting increasing skirmishes between Israelis and Palestinians in the Old City of Jerusalem.

On May 8, Palestinian Muslims streamed to the Haram al-Sharif for Ramadan prayers, in large numbers to mark the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad, considered not only the most sacred night of Ramazan, but of the whole Islamic calendar. Simultaneously, some Israeli Jews were gathering ahead of Jerusalem Day (May 10) marking Jewish control over the Old City of Jerusalem secured during the 1967 war.&nbsp;

The focal point of those celebrations is the Western Wall of the Temple Mount (the holiest site in Judaism), the same elevated platform that Muslims call the Haram al-Sharif.

Israeli police stormed the compound of the al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam and the confrontations occurred resulting more than 300 people injured, mostly Palestinians. Closure of Damascus gate was another irritant. This resulted a barrage of rockets fired by Hamas on Israel, responded by repeated air attacks by Israel on Gaza, along with other arsenal, causing heavy destruction and casualties, which continued for last 11 days. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Internal Dynamics &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

This confrontation has happened at a time when there is political crises in Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA). Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel recently failed to put together a ruling coalition even after the fourth round of elections in just two years; hence lacks a popular mandate.&nbsp;

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose term expired 12 years ago also lacks popular mandate. He recently cancelled legislative elections, after his party was trailing badly in the polls.

With leaders on both sides lacking legitimacy any peace talks regarding such complex situation may have little chances of success, with a risk of reckless action by either. Moreover, the Arab population in Israel was also on streets and incidences of lynching may have potential to ignite if pending Supreme Court decision is one-sided. The Hezbollah also came out in support of Hamas further adding complexity to the problem. The truce therefore is quite fragile.&nbsp;

International Reaction &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

During UNSC resolutions USA found itself isolated in backing Israel. It was therefore in tight spot to broker peace amidst growing pressure against Israel seen to be using excessive force.

It also needs to be noted that after erstwhile US President Trump recognised Jerusalem as capital of Israel, he shifted US embassy there and offered an unviable peace solution, which was rejected by PA, but &nbsp;Prime Minister Netanyahu seems to have assumed that entire Jerusalem belongs to Israel and others need to slowly vacate it.

This is disastrous because from historic and religious point of view Jerusalem is non-negotiable to &nbsp;Christians, Jews and Palestinians, who coexist there since ages. &nbsp;

International community although recognises Israel’s right to defend itself, but not at the cost of pulverising civil areas of Gaza, causing heavy civil casualties, even if it accuses Hamas of basing itself amidst population (a tactic adopted by most terrorist groups in the world).&nbsp;

As per UN, the truce seemed to be brokered by Egypt and Qatar (normally accused of supporting Shia-based Hamas, along with Iran). What is grossly different this time was over-reaction by Erdogan, trying to pose himself as new leader of Islamic world and Pakistan with loud voices against Israel.

This confrontation happened when Israel was improving relations with some countries of Arab world, which may suffer a temporary setback due to their objection to Israeli actions on the Haram al-Sharif. Most Arab states otherwise are hostile to Hamas, and differentiate well between the Palestinian people and the Hamas fighters.&nbsp;

Future Peace Prospects

Fed up of insecurities, In 2007, according to a number of polls, the majority of Israelis and Palestinians, prefer the two-state solution over any other solution, as a means of resolving the conflict, which was initiated in Oslo Accords in 1993-95. With complexities of entanglement of 167 Palestinian enclaves embedded in 203 Israeli settlements and related governance issues, it's not really practical that it may be possible for Israel to agree to vacate West Bank.

I don’t visualise any Israeli leadership ever agreeing to such a proposal. Same is the case with Jerusalem. Any attempt to push out any one religious community from its religious site is bound to have serious backlash. Peaceful coexistence may not be preferred option but seems to be the only practical option.&nbsp;

There is also a possibility of outside peace spoilers like Erdogan igniting religious disharmony, which must be curbed by both the parties and Quartet.

There have been some voices from Palestinians expecting Indian mediation as India has good relations with Israel as well as Palestine, but the issue is so complex and sensitive that current Indian policy of maintaining independent relations with both with no interference in internal affairs of either, may be the best policy for India.

Considering all the factors, the current truce is a welcome step, but its longevity is questionable in light of political uncertainties both sides and mistrust between communities.

What is grossly different this time was over-reaction by Erdogan, trying to pose himself as new leader of Islamic world and Pakistan with loud voices against Israel. This confrontation happened when Israel was improving relations with some countries of Arab world, which may suffer a temporary setback due to their objection to Israeli actions on the Haram al-Sharif. Most Arab states otherwise are hostile to Hamas, and differentiate well between the Palestinian people and the Hamas fighters. Future Peace Prospects Fed up of insecurities, In 2007, according to a number of polls, the majority of Israelis and Palestinians, prefer the two-state solution over any other solution, as a means of resolving the conflict, which was initiated in Oslo Accords in 1993-95. With complexities of entanglement of 167 Palestinian enclaves embedded in 203 Israeli settlements and related governance issues, it's not really practical that it may be possible for Israel to agree to vacate West Bank. I don’t visualise any Israeli leadership ever agreeing to such a proposal. Same is the case with Jerusalem. Any attempt to push out any one religious community from its religious site is bound to have serious backlash. Peaceful coexistence may not be preferred option but seems to be the only practical option. There is also a possibility of outside peace spoilers like Erdogan igniting religious disharmony, which must be curbed by both the parties and Quartet. There have been some voices from Palestinians expecting Indian mediation as India has good relations with Israel as well as Palestine, but the issue is so complex and sensitive that current Indian policy of maintaining independent relations with both with no interference in internal affairs of either, may be the best policy for India. Considering all the factors, the current truce is a welcome step, but its longevity is questionable in light of political uncertainties both sides and mistrust between communities.
