As per AFP witnesses, French police deployed tear gas and anti-riot techniques to stop hundreds of protesters from moving toward Tehran's diplomatic mission while protesting in the capital.

In London, police reported that till now 12 arrests have been made. Five police officers were "severely injured" as protesters attempted to storm through barricades surrounding the embassy. Several were injured as masonry, bottles, and other objects were thrown. At least five people were severely hurt.

For the second consecutive day in Paris, hundreds gathered to voice their outrage over the death of Mahsa Amini in Iran and to show their support for the unrest that began in the country. As per Iran's official toll, 41 lives have been claimed within 10 days of the protest.

The protest at Trocadero Square started calmly. The protesters tried to approach the nearby Iranian embassy but were blocked by the police using tear gas. The French police, in a statement, said, "on several occasions groups tried to break through the roadblock set up near the Iranian embassy. The police used... tear gas to repel them," AFP reported.

Agitated protesters were already unhappy because French President Emmanuel Macron shook hands with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi last week outside the UN General Assembly.&nbsp;

Similar protests have been taking place in several parts of the world, showing their support for Iranian women.&nbsp;

The Iranian government decided to shut off the internet in parts of the capital Tehran and Kurdistan following widespread protests that were triggered by the death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman in police custody.&nbsp;

The country has been experiencing a massive uproar after Mahsa Amini died following her arrest by the morality police for breaking the tough hijab rules. According to the investigation, she suffered a fatal blow to her head after she was detained by the authorities while travelling to Tehran with her family.&nbsp;

As part of the new regulations, the government stopped access to social media sites like Instagram and WhatsApp for everyone in order to stop the users from expressing dissent about the topic online.&nbsp;

“Platforms like Instagram became the virtual street, where we can gather to protest, because it was not possible to do that in real life,” Shaghayegh Norouzi, an Iranian campaigner, told The Guardian.&nbsp;

“During the last protests [2017-2019], the government cut off the internet for days at a time. During that time, protesters were killed and arrested,” she said. “Protesters are also using the internet to organise themselves. They can call each other and say when they are in danger or warn each other.”

According to Reuters, the protests were held in 15 cities across the country and resulted in significant loss of property.&nbsp;The state media also reported that three individuals from the country's military were also killed in Tabriz while a fourth was found dead in the city of Shiraz.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Amnesty International has said that eight people – six men, one woman, and one child –&nbsp;were dead in the protests in Iran due to the intervention of the military forces. &nbsp;

Iran blocks internet access in Tehran, Kurdistan as protests over Mahsa Amini's custodial death intensify

At least four people have been reportedly killed while protesting against the custodial death of a woman Mahsa Amini who had been detained by the Iranian morality police for violating the hijab ban.

According to local media and human rights groups, the number of casualties, including a police officer and a member of a pro-government militia, has risen in the past two days even as the agitation continues unabated for the fifth day on Wednesday.

But the number of deaths could be high as Kurdish rights group Hengaw claimed that 10 protesters had been killed, reports Reuters news agency.

They alleged that three died on Wednesday, out of the seven people killed so far by security forces.

However, Iranian officials have denied that protesters were killed by them, suggesting that they may have been targeted by&nbsp;“armed dissidents”.

The protests, initially concentrated in Iran’s Kurdish-populated north-western regions, eventually spread to at least 50 cities and towns, making it one of the largest demonstrations since the one that took place in 2019 over gasoline prices.

At least 22 agitators were arrested from two southern provinces of the city. State-run IRNA news agency reported that 15 people were arrested overnight in the southwestern city of Dezful in Khuzestan province and seven others from Yasuj city in Kohgiluyeh-Boyerahmad Province.

The report also said that 200 people had gathered in another city in Khuzestan province — Andimeshk — where one firefighter was injured after demonstrators threw stones at police and firefighters.

The arrests follow Iran's sudden announcement this week that the cost of cooking oil, chicken, eggs and milk would rise by as much as 300 per cent.

The prices rise was attributed to global supply chain snarls and Russia’s invasion of major food exporter Ukraine.

Though Iran produces half of its wheat requirements, it relies on Russia for other half. It also imports half of its cooking oil from Ukraine, where fighting has kept many farmers from the fields.

Apart from that, drought is already wreaking havoc on Iran's economy, which is already batted with Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear deal.

According to AP news agency, inflation has soared to 40 per cent— the highest level since 1994.

Around 30 per cent of Iranian households are below the poverty line, according to Iran's Statistics Center.

Smuggling of Iran’s highly subsidised bread into neighbouring Iraq and Afghanistan has also spiked as hunger spreads across the region.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has promised to create jobs, lift sanctions and rescue the economy, but talks to revive Iran's tattered nuclear deal with world powers remain deadlocked.

300% rise in prices of staple foods sparks protest in Iran, 22 arrested

For two weeks the Iranian government tolerated growing protests over scarce water supplies in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, watching them grow as restaurants served demonstrators free soup and barbers offered free haircuts. State television even aired interviews with farmers discussing their grievances.

But after the protests spilled over to at least one other city, the predictable happened Friday: The government violently cracked down.

Security forces wielding batons, shields and guns swarmed the city’s riverbed around 4 p.m. Thursday as a group of farmers were sipping tea and chatting about protest strategy around a campfire.

The security forces had used a megaphone to tell farmers they had 10 minutes to evacuate, Hassan Tavakoli, a 47-year-old farmer from Isfahan, said in a telephone interview. His account was backed up by several videos that were shared with The New York Times by Isfahan residents.

“Before we had a chance to move, suddenly our tents were set on fire and they started throwing tear gas at us and shooting in the air,” Tavakoli said. He said the crowd included several families with young children and two babies.

“I never expected them to do this to us, to beat us, fire at us and injure farmers,” he added.

For more than two weeks, Tavakoli and hundreds of other farmers had been protesting on the dry bed of the city’s storied Zayanderoud River. Tens of thousands of people had joined them in a show of solidarity.

Their demand: Restore water flows to the river to help irrigate farmlands laid to waste from years of mismanaging water resources.

“We have nothing left of our lands and livelihoods, we are just asking for our water rights,” said Tavakoli. He owns three hectares of farmland that was once lush with crops of wheat, barley and vegetables. The land has been dry and barren for 15 months, forcing Tavakoli to sell his livestock to survive.

Iran has been facing increasing water scarcity issues because of years of mismanagement. In the case of Isfahan, water has been diverted through underground pipes away from farmlands and toward industrial complexes in the desert province of Yazd and for drinking water to the religious city of Qom.

Iran Meteorological Organization estimates that some 97% of the country is dealing with drought at some level. The country’s former energy minister warned in May that Iran was facing its driest summer in 50 years and that temperatures approaching 50 degrees Celsius — 122 degrees Fahrenheit — would lead to cuts in electricity power and shortages of water.

Protests in July over water shortages, mostly staged by farmers from the ethnic Arab population in Khuzestan province, were also violently crushed by the government. As a temporary solution, officials opened a dam, and water flowed back to the river, helping irrigate the farmers’ land and hydrate livestock.

In Thursday’s crackdown, security forces demanded the farmers issue a statement announcing their sit-in had ended even though no resolution had been reached and the government had not taken steps to address their concerns, Tavakoli said.

On Friday, as people gathered to protest, security forces lashed out with more violence. Clashes spread from the dry riverbed to streets in downtown Isfahan. Security guards fired birdshot and tear gas at the crowds of protesters and beat them with batons, according to two eyewitnesses in the area and videos shared widely on social media.

There were no official casualty numbers, but videos and eyewitnesses said scores of demonstrators were injured. Tavakoli said dozens of farmers were also badly injured in the clashes, but he had not heard of any reports of deaths. Rights activists said dozens of people were arrested.

Rouhani says 'enemy conspiracy' defeated in protest-hit Iran

Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards warned anti-government protesters of "decisive" action if unrest over gasoline price hikes does not cease, state television reported on Monday.

The warning appeared to hint at a looming crackdown on protests that flared nationwide in response to an official announcement on Friday of gasoline rationing and price hikes of at least 50 per cent.

"If necessary we will take decisive and revolutionary action against any continued moves to disturb the people's peace and security," the Guards said in a statement carried by state media.
