Facebook Inc unveiled new models of its Portal video chatting devices on Wednesday, making the company's first foray into TV streaming hardware but offering a limited selection of subscription services.

The launch comes as Facebook is trying to pivot toward more private forms of communication, after years of slowing user growth, data-sharing scandals and calls for change to its hands-off approach to content moderation.

The company is already one of the biggest global players in private messaging, with its WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram apps used by 2.4 billion people each month.

It is keeping the focus of its new Portal line on video calling, adding the capability for WhatsApp calls along with improvements to a wide-angle camera that keeps users in focus as they move about a room.

Facebook is also expanding Portal sales into countries including the UK, France, and Australia while lowering prices to more closely compete with industry-leading smart speakers from Amazon and Google that sell for under $100.

Standard models of the Portal, which ship on October 15, will come in $129 and $179 versions. Portal TV will cost $149 and hit the shelves on November 5.

Facebook is hoping the social nature of its products will be its selling point, allowing users to watch shows together while interacting via video call on the same screen.

"I think that in a couple years' time if you have a smart streaming device that doesn't have a camera allowing you to video call people, you're not going to have a competitive product," said vice president of AR/VR Andrew Bosworth. "I think this is the killer feature for a device like this."

Bosworth also touted privacy protections like local processing of smart features on the devices, which means most user data will not be sent back to Facebook servers.

But Portal TV offers only a few music apps and has limited options for TV programming, meaning it could face a stiff challenge in attracting consumers used to content-rich rivals like Apple TV, Netflix, and Roku.

At a demonstration in San Francisco on Tuesday, the only way to stream shows appeared to be via Facebook's Watch app. Executives said Portal TV would have Amazon's Prime Video app loaded by the time it is available.

The company declined to say whether it had approached other content providers like HBO, Hulu or Disney.

Millie Bobby Brown, who rose to fame with her acting prowess in the insanely popular series 'Stranger Things', was recently called out for sharing a fake night time skincare tutorial. After the video went viral for all the wrong reasons, the star issued an apology.

The 15-year-old star took to Instagram recently to address the criticism she received over the nighttime skincare routine. "I'm still learning the best way to share my routines as I get to know this space better--I'm not an expert," she wrote. Looks like Brown has taken the criticism in stride, stating in her post that she hopes fans will keep the 'feedback' coming.

"I thought doing a quick video replicating my personal process for that night was okay, but that's not what was conveyed. I understand, I appreciate all of your feedback on this journey, please keep sharing your thoughts and I will too. Ily guys x #loveandlight," she added in her post.

The actor was called out by her fans, who think she faked a skincare tutorial for her Florence by Mills skincare range as her make-up remained completely intact throughout the video.

In order to promote her beauty brand, the 15-year-old star shared a since-deleted skincare tutorial on Instagram, showing her followers her nighttime skincare regimen, which incorporates several of her line's products: a face mist, scrub, cleanser, moisturizer, and lip oil, reported Page Six. Brown showed off her face mist and even claimed to apply her facial scrub, but fans were left confused as it appeared she wasn't actually applying anything on her face, and just rubbing it without any product on.

In the video, Brown pretended to put skincare products but doesn't appear to wash her face actually, despite saying things like, "So I'm just applying now" while rubbing her face and "Okay so I just wiped that off."

Fans also pointed out that Brown's eye makeup remains intact throughout the tutorial. "I can't believe she's literally just dry rubbing her hands together and rubbing her face. Like is this a prank?" one fan wrote on Reddit.

Added another user, "I don't ever believe that celebs are ever selling us the skincare routine they actually use. But I still expect them to be willing to use it at least once! If you're not willing to even put it on your face to make a sale, why should anyone else use it for real?"

However some came to her defence, writing: 'For the love of God can we stop making fun of Millie Bobby Brown she is a CHILD (plus 100000x less cringy than any of us were at that age, come off it)'.
The clip was soon deleted from the photo-sharing application after fans began speculating the actor was just pretending to use her products.

The actor isn't the first star to be called out for promoting her beauty line in a misleading manner. The American reality star and makeup mogul Kylie Jenner, who recently launched her skincare range, was criticised by people for her skincare routine.

The 21-year-old star received flak for using the foaming face wash and still ending up with a lot of makeup on her face. She also faced backlash for using a filter while washing her face using products from her skincare range.
Russian police said they had arrested a man suspected of murdering a popular lifestyle blogger and model whose body was found in a suitcase in her apartment in Moscow.

Ekaterina Karaglanova's landlord found the 24-year-old's body at a rented apartment on Saturday after her parents had been unable to reach her by phone, the Investigative Committee which handles major crimes said. She had been stabbed.

Karaglanova, who had studied at a medical university, ran a travel, fashion and lifestyle blog on Instagram and had more than 80,000 followers.

Instagram on Monday announced new features aimed at curbing online bullying on its platform, including a warning to people as they are preparing to post abusive remarks.

"It's our responsibility to create a safe environment on Instagram," said a statement from Adam Mosseri, head of the visually focused social platform owned by Facebook.

"This intervention gives people a chance to reflect and undo their comment and prevents the recipient from receiving the harmful comment notification," Mosseri said.

Instagram will refrain from taking down an ultra-realistic "deepfake video" posted Tuesday of Facebook's CEO bragging about controlling billions of people's "stolen" personal data. "Imagine this for a second: one man with total control of billions of people's stolen data, all their secrets, their lives, their futures," an AI-generated Mark Zuckerberg says in the video. "I owe it all to Spectre. Spectre showed me that whoever controls the data controls the future." The video was shared by British artist Bill Posters as part of the promotion for his project "Spectre," which looks at the outsize influence of technology and social media.
People of India really don't know how to relax. The majority has chosen Modi and re-elected BJP back to power (or is it the other way round?). It is a time to celebrate, rejoice and celebrate and maybe tune in to watch the beloved PM give speeches of desh, right? No. Because as soon as they have chosen their leaders, they have obviously found a new issue to outrage upon. And of course, like it is in most cases, at the receiving end are two women.

On Monday, as newly elected MPs went to Parliament to collect their IDs and certificates, many of took to social media to post photos from outside and inside Parliament. The excitement of first time MPs was naturally high as for many it was indeed a dream that had come true. Among them were actresses and now TMC MPs Mimi Chakraborty and Nusrat Jahan - who shared their happiness and excitement via posts on social media. The two looked happy as they flashed their new ID Cards and the victory sign posing right outside Parliament.

The junta took no time to take the higher moral ground on the two actresses and tutor them what to wear, what to post on their personal pages and even taught Nusrat a lesson on grammar. They were reminded in not so gentle ways that how this was 'not a film set' or a place to do a 'photoshoot' and how they should know 'what to wear' to the holy sanctum of the Indian democracy.

I almost choked on my coffee reading the comments on their attire and scrolled up to check what Mimi and Nusrat were wearing. After all, the two are indeed very glamorous and rule the Bengali film industry with their charm, beauty and perhaps even acting skills. So being top heroines, they may have gone overboard dressing up for the first day at their new job. Instead, what I found disappointed me to a great extent. You see, the two looked very regular - for the lack of a better word. Mimi was dressed in a white shirt and blue denim and Nusrat wore a burgundy pantsuit- stuff that you would find in almost every girl's wardrobe and nothing that should offend anyone in a free, democratic country like ours these days.

But it did.

To quote some of the trolls, the two were asked to get real. "Seriously? This is how you pose in front of the parliament? This is not some film shooting.. Get real, girl!," wrote one user on Mimi's post while another said, "U actually don't know how to dress up.I hope it's not ur shooting place or ur holiday destination. Its an official purpose."

On Nusrat's post, someone told her to wear something more formal than a pant-suit, and wrote "parliament is not a photo studio... make your getup with formal dress..." while another one dissed the people of Basirhat who voted for her and wrote, "SHAME ON THE PEOPLE OF BOSHIRHAT FOR ELECTING THIS WOMAN WHO HAS MADE A JOKE OF OUR PARLIAMENT."

How sexist is our society that we diss the women and question their credibility and praise the men at the same time? It may be alright to be a sceptic but to completely admonish the two women on their credibility even before they have started their work is absolutely unfair.

The biases are blind to the point of being hilarious at the same time trivialising the mandate of the people and the populous votes on the basis which the women have come to power. Not just Mimi and Nursat, many other MPs have posted photos from that day- thanking their voters and rejoicing at the new role that has been bestowed upon them. So targetting just the two women, questioning their credibility and pointing out their attires speaks volumes about the society we live in.
Snap Inc on Thursday launched a gaming platform within its Snapchat app featuring original and third-party games such as Zynga Inc's Tiny Royale, aiming to keep existing users engaged longer and attract new ones.

Snap also announced a slew of fresh features and content for existing products, adding shows from Bunim/Murray Productions and BuzzFeed and augmented reality filters including templates of landmarks. It said it will also allow advertisers to buy ads that run outside the Snapchat platform.

Snap made the announcement at its first-ever Partner Summit in Los Angeles. The new features and content are aimed at keeping its core base of 13-34-year-olds on its messaging platform longer even as overall user growth has stalled.

Snap faces fierce competition for users and advertisers from bigger and far better-financed rivals. For instance, Facebook Inc's platform and Instagram photo-sharing app have copied popular Snapchat features like Stories, a personal feed of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours.

In 2018, Instagram had about 400 million daily active users on its version of Stories, more than twice Snapchat's daily users.

Snap must also battle for user attention against newer rivals like TikTok, a short-form video app owned by Chinese tech company Bytedance.

The number of daily active users on Snapchat has held steady or fallen for the past several quarters, but the app is still wildly popular among young users.

Snap said the gaming platform will have non-skippable, six-second video ads, a relatively new format that boosted fourth-quarter revenue.

Snap also announced a product called "Snap Audience Network" which will allow advertisers to buy vertical ads that run beyond Snap's platform to third-party apps. The tool has not been rolled out but Snap made the announcement on Thursday to get developers and publishers on board, its spokesman said.

The company also launched new augmented reality "lenses," or filters that overlay video, including templates of landmarks like Buckingham Palace in London, the US Capitol Building in Washington DC, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
