Indian unanimously elected as vice-chairman of global UN advocacy body

The quality of Indian medicines is being questioned again, this time in neighbouring Sri Lanka where health officials are seeking a probe after fatalities and complications were reported across the nation.

Health Secretary Janaka Sri Chandragupta told News 1st that they are probing the quality of these Indian medicines which were imported via the Indian Line of Credit recently.

According to local media reports, a patient at the Intensive Care Unit of the Peradeniya Hospital died after being administered one of the medicines sourced from India.

Director of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, Dr Arjuna Thilakaratne, told News 1st that the woman was administered Indian-made anaesthetic Bupivacaine for hernia surgery, some two months ago.

He said that another woman who was admitted to the same hospital to deliver a child died after being given the same Indian anaesthetic drug.

This comes after the 10 visually impaired patients who were administered Indian medicines after eye surgery complained of complications in May 2023.

The doctors noted the “presence of germs” in the eye medication as a reason for the&nbsp;patients’ condition. Following this, the Sri Lankan Health Ministry blacklisted the use of Prednisolone eye drops.

<h2>Two Indian firms in the dock</h2>

The report prompted the Indian drug regulator, Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, to launch an investigation&nbsp;against a pharmaceutical company based in Gujarat. The probe is currently underway.

Indiana Ophthalmics from Wadhwan-Gujarat has been told to investigate the cause, according to reports.

<h2>WHO labels 4 cough syrups as 'substandard products',&nbsp;Indian pharma&nbsp;company in the dock?</h2>

Notably, prior to these incidents, Transparency International Sri Lanka, an NGO that fights against corruption, had filed a petition in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court, challenging the decision of the Cabinet and health authorities to procure drugs from unregistered suppliers.

The petition questioned the national drug regulator’s role in providing a waiver of registration to allow for the swift import of essential drugs.

Gujarat-based Savorite Pharmaceuticals (Pvt) Limited and Chennai-based Kausikh Therapeutics were named as respondents. Early in April, the Supreme Court granted leave to proceed in the case and suspended imports from these companies, the Hindu newspaper reported.

<h2>Not the first time</h2>

This is not the first time that Indian-made medicines were taken down over their quality. In February this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that around 90 kids died last year of kidney failure, 20 in Uzbekistan and 70 in Gambia, after allegedly consuming India-made&nbsp;cough syrups.

Gambian and Swiss tests found the syrups contained toxic industrial-grade glycol rather than the safe but costlier pharmaceutical-grade glycerine, the agency said.

The US also began investigating the EzriCare Artificial Tears, an over-the-counter eye drop produced by Global Pharma Healthcare in Chennai, India, after linking it to complications and death.

<h2>Relying on India-made drugs</h2>

India is one of the leading manufacturers of low-cost generic drugs. The pharmaceutical sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors with a market value of $42 billion.

It supplies 40 per cent of US generics, a quarter of UK medicines and 45 per cent of Africa’s generics. Many of its factories are world-class and millions of people around the world consume Indian-made drugs without incident.

Alarm in Sri Lanka over India-made medicines causing deaths and complication

US Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) in a 7-2 decision and kept intact a law that seeks to keep Native American children with tribal families.&nbsp;The court ruled that the law in cases of adoption involving American Indian children does not&nbsp;unlawfully impose federal mandates on areas traditionally regulated by states. &nbsp;

ICWA established federal standards for the removal of Native children from their families and required state courts to inform tribes when an American Indian child is removed from their home outside of a reservation.

The Act has been a significant law for over 45 years, enacted after a congressional investigation revealed that a significant number of Native children had been taken from their tribal homes and placed with non-Native families and institutions without tribal connections.

<h2>Why was the Act challenged?&nbsp;</h2>

The law was challenged by Chad and Jennifer Brackeen, along with other non-Native prospective adoptive couples, who argued that ICWA violated the Constitution by racially discriminating and compelling the state to enforce federal mandates.&nbsp;

However, in the case before the court, the state of Texas and several families adopting American Indian children challenged the law, arguing that it encroached on state autonomy.

In its Thursday ruling, the court did not decide whether the law unconstitutionally discriminates based on race when it comes to placing children in Native foster and adoptive homes.

The court determined that the challengers, including prospective adoptive parents and the state of Texas, lacked standing to sue as they had not suffered concrete harm, reported NPR media portal.&nbsp;

In her majority opinion, Justice Amy Coney Barrett stated, "The bottom line is that we reject all of petitioners' challenges to the statute, some on the merits and others for lack of standing."

Justice Samuel Alito, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, dissented, criticising the court for disregarding the best interests of the vulnerable children involved and undermining the division of federal and state authority.

<h2>Native Americans — political not racial group</h2>

The Supreme Court rejected the arguments by the challengers, citing longstanding precedent that classifies Native Americans as a political rather than racial group. This decision is seen as a victory for Native American tribal leaders and advocates who argued that ICWA protects Native children and tribal communities.

<h2>ICWA background&nbsp;</h2>

The Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 (ICWA) was enacted by Congress after extensive hearings revealed that public and private agencies had forcibly removed hundreds of thousands of American Indian children from their families.

These children were then placed in institutions or with families unrelated to their tribes. The tribes considered these actions a threat to their existence, prompting Congress to pass ICWA.

The law also implemented a framework for foster and adoption placements and prioritises placement with extended family members, followed by other tribal members, and if neither is available, placement with a different tribal family.

<h2>Biden administration's take&nbsp;</h2>

The Biden administration, like previous ones, defended the law, citing historical precedents that define ICWA's classifications based on tribal connections rather than race. The court agreed with the tribes, leaving the law intact.

US Supreme Court upholds law ensuring protections to Native American children in adoption

Tensions between China and India over the expulsion of each other’s journalists reached a new height after Beijing officials asked the lone Indian reporter to leave the country.

The correspondent from the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency was asked to leave Beijing earlier this month, Bloomberg reported, citing people aware of the development.

China's foreign ministry and India’s Ministry of External Affairs are yet to make a comment on this matter.

His departure marks the end of India‘s minuscule media presence in the world's second-largest economy amidst deteriorating of ties between the two Asian giants.

Earlier in April, two Indian correspondents were barred from returning to China after the Chinese Foreign Ministry “froze” their visas. While in May, the third journalist did not have his accreditation renewed.

Last month, China claimed that its action was in response to India denying visas to Chinese journalists. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said there was one Chinese journalist left in India.

New Delhi had rejected visa renewal applications from two journalists from Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, India’s foreign ministry said that Chinese reporters had been operating in the South Asian country without any difficulty, but Beijing was creating impediments for Indian journalists in China. Both countries were in touch over the issue, it added.

The visa row erupted a few months ago after Indian journalists hired assistants in China to help with reporting, Bloomberg reported citing unnamed Indian officials.

Apart from India, the US and Australia also witnessed diplomatic tensions over journalist visas.

In 2020, two Australian journalists based in China fled the country as diplomatic tensions worsened between the two nations. China tells lone Indian journalist to leave as diplomatic tensions soar: Report

Following a string of deadly manufacturing mishaps, the world's biggest supplier of cheap medicine has come under heightened scrutiny. US inspectors have recently discovered extensive problems at plants controlled by some of India's largest pharmaceutical companies. The US Food and Drug Administration, which is expanding visits to Indian manufacturers, has sent warning letters and alerts to dozens of drugmakers.&nbsp;

The US Food and Drug Administration, which increased visits to Indian facilities after the relaxation of Covid-19 constraints last year, has sent alerts and warning letters to dozens of drugmakers. Inspectors described filthy working conditions at production facilities, poorly trained employees, torn paper, unattended&nbsp;customer complaints, and proof that defective pharmaceuticals were being exported to the US.

The extensive failures, documented in FDA papers obtained by Bloomberg News under the Freedom of Information Act, imply that flaws were overlooked in some Indian facilities that export to the US because factory audits were suspended for nearly two years during the pandemic. &nbsp;

The US and several other nations receive the majority of their generic medication from the South Asian country. The $50 billion industry is in the news following a slew of scandals involving smaller, privately held Indian firms, including the adulteration of cough syrup that killed scores of children in the Gambia and Uzbekistan and the export of tainted chemotherapy medications to the US.

Reiterating their recommendations for more regulation and a global reevaluation of supply chains in response to these deaths are public health activists. In addition to pushing for more American drugs production, the Biden administration has issued warnings over the overwhelming importation of pharmaceuticals from nations like India. The fatalities and medicine recalls also occur at a crucial moment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, which is promoting the South Asian country to investors as a competitive alternative to China for high-quality manufacturing.&nbsp;

“It’s like playing whack-a-mole,” Alice Wang, a London-based fund manager at Quaero Capital LLP, which for now has avoided investing in Indian pharma firms told Bloomberg.&nbsp;

“India is still behind China in many significant ways and some investments in the high-value-precision manufacturing spaces may end up needing a reality check,” she added.

<h2>Several warnings given</h2>

The FDA has been warning about factory standards in India for a long time. In 2019, the organisation informed Congress that, among the nations it oversaw, India had the lowest proportion of inspection results that were deemed acceptable at drug manufacturing facilities (83 per cent). The US came in second with a percentage of 93 per cent, followed by China with a percentage of 90 per cent, and the European Union with a percentage of 98 per cent. A more thorough analysis was not included in the study.

Following a string of deadly manufacturing mishaps, the world's biggest supplier of cheap medicine has come under heightened scrutiny. US inspectors have recently discovered extensive problems at plants controlled by some of India's largest pharmaceutical companies. The US Food and Drug Administration, which is expanding visits to Indian manufacturers, has sent warning letters and alerts to dozens of drugmakers. The US Food and Drug Administration, which increased visits to Indian facilities after the relaxation of Covid-19 constraints last year, has sent alerts and warning letters to dozens of drugmakers. Inspectors described filthy working conditions at production facilities, poorly trained employees, torn paper, unattended customer complaints, and proof that defective pharmaceuticals were being exported to the US. The extensive failures, documented in FDA papers obtained by Bloomberg News under the Freedom of Information Act, imply that flaws were overlooked in some Indian facilities that export to the US because factory audits were suspended for nearly two years during the pandemic. In addition to pushing for more American drugs production, the Biden administration has issued warnings over the overwhelming importation of pharmaceuticals from nations like India. The fatalities and medicine recalls also occur at a crucial moment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, which is promoting the South Asian country to investors as a competitive alternative to China for high-quality manufacturing. “It’s like playing whack-a-mole,” Alice Wang, a London-based fund manager at Quaero Capital LLP, which for now has avoided investing in Indian pharma firms told Bloomberg. “India is still behind China in many significant ways and some investments in the high-value-precision manufacturing spaces may end up needing a reality check,” she added. Several warnings given The FDA has been warning about factory standards in India for a long time. In a remarkable turn of events, nine Indian sailors who had been held captive by Libyan rebels since January have finally been released. The crew, consisting of nine Indian sailors recruited through the Greek company M/s Redwings Shipping SA, had been aboard the ship named Maya-1, flying the flag of Cameroon, when it encountered a breakdown near the coast of Libya and grounded offshore in the Janzour Area.

They were subsequently taken into captivity by Az Zawiya, a local armed group near Al Maya Port in Zawia City. The successful release of the sailors can be attributed to the key role played by two individuals, namely Tabassum Mansoor, the Principal of the Indian International School in Benghazi, and Ngulkham Jathom Gangte, the Ambassador of India to Tunisia.

In the midst of heavy combat between Sudan's army and a paramilitary group, it is reported that 3,000 Indians are stranded there.

Around 100 members of the nomadic Hakki-Pikki tribe from the southern state of Karnataka are included in this figure since they travelled to Sudan to trade in natural medicines and goods.

After India's foreign minister, S. Jaishankar, accused an opposition Congress lawmaker of "playing politics" when he tweeted a request to ensure their safe return to India, the situation they were in had generated a political debate in that nation.

Their issue had caused an uproar in India after S Jaishankar, the foreign minister of the country accused a Congress opposition leader of "playing politics" when he tweeted an appeal to ensure their safe return to India.

Some Hakki-Pikki tribal members in Sudan who spoke with BBC Hindi claimed they were living in dread and had limited access to necessities like food and water.

While the majority of them are in the capital Khartoum, where fighting is fierce, others are in the western city of Al-Fashir, which is almost 1,000 kilometres from Khartoum.

The battle, which is&nbsp;&nbsp;ongoing since last week, is the consequence of a struggle for dominance between the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary organisation, and the Sudanese regular army.

Uncertainty surrounds the number of deaths brought on by the conflict, although the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) said on Tuesday that at least 174 civilians died in the battle.

"It is extremely scary. Heavy firing takes place nearby, mainly in the mornings and evenings. It continues late into the night," Prabhu S, a member of the Hakki-Pikki tribe who is in Al-Fashir, told the BBC Hindi.

In Karnataka, there are roughly 12,000 Hakki-Pikkis, according to the 2011 Census. The Kannada word "Hakki-Pikki" refers to bird hunters, but after bird hunting was outlawed in India in the 1970s, tribe members turned to creating herbal medicines to make ends meet.

They frequently travel with their families to sell these goods in nations like Sudan, Singapore, and Malaysia, according to Dr&nbsp;DC Nanjunda, an anthropologist and deputy director at the University of Mysore's Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, who spoke to the BBC.

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, a well-known Indian-American mathematician and statistician, will receive the 2023 International Prize in Statistics, the field's equivalent of the Nobel Prize. CR Rao made significant contributions in the field of statistics and its applications in various areas, including medical research.&nbsp;

The accolade, which comes with a reward of $80,000, will be given to Rao, who is currently 102 years old, in July during the biennial World Statistics Congress of the International Statistical Institute in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

“In awarding this prize, we celebrate the monumental work by CR Rao that not only revolutionized statistical thinking in its time but also continues to exert enormous influence on human understanding of science across a wide spectrum of disciplines,” said Guy Nason, chair of the International Prize in Statistics Foundation.

Three fundamental results that paved the way for the modern field of statistics and provided statistical tools that are heavily used in science today were demonstrated by CR&nbsp;Rao in his remarkable 1945 paper that was published in the Bulletin of the Calcutta Mathematical Society.

The first, now referred to as the Cramer-Rao lower bound, offers a way to determine when an estimation technique is as accurate as it can be.

The second finding, known as the Rao-Blackwell Theorem,&nbsp;after the discovery of it by renowned statistician David Blackwell, offers a method for improving an estimate to an ideal one. These findings collectively serve as the cornerstone around which much of statistics is constructed.

The third conclusion, dubbed "information geometry," offered insights that helped establish a brand-new multidisciplinary area that has since prospered. These findings collectively enable scientists to mine data more effectively for insights.

One must have seen talking parrots, dogs doing incredible tricks, and cats' quick feet and leisurely strolls. Yet, can you recall ever witnessing a Sarus crane flying to the tunes of its saviour? You're about to, then.

This is the story of Amethi city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP). The bird was hurt last year on a farm. Amethi's Mohammad Aarif saved it and provided it with all the medical care it needed.

Now, the bird seems to have built a deep trust with its saviour, so much so, that its wings are reluctant to leave the path Aarif traces.&nbsp;

Aarif carried the bird home so it could cure the injury on its legs. The bird hasn't left his side since then.

Aarif reportedly told the local media how he never anticipated the bird to stay with him. It follows him everywhere he goes and even engages in play with him during evening time.&nbsp;

If other birds come nearby, it hides under the verandah. Almost as if not want to leave Aarif's side. The bird occasionally takes off with its pals. But... it always comes back in the evening.&nbsp;

Other than Aarif, the bird is not that friendly with other people, including Aarif's family.

Aarif reportedly told the local media how he never anticipated the bird to stay with him. It follows him everywhere he goes and even engages in play with him during evening time. If other birds come nearby, it hides under the verandah. Almost as if not want to leave Aarif's side. The bird occasionally takes off with its pals. But... it always comes back in the evening. Other than Aarif, the bird is not that friendly with other people, including Aarif's family. Indian hotel employee in Dubai hits jackpot; wins Dh25 million in Big Ticket

A close aide of Kenyan President William Ruto has claimed that the two missing Indians in Kenya have been killed by the disbanded DCI unit, a media report said on Friday.

Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and his friend Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai, who were part of the Kenya Kwanza digital campaign team, went missing along with taxi driver Nicodemus Mwania from Mombasa Road in July.

The two contributed immensely to the success of Ruto's campaign, said Itumbi, who was at the heart of Ruto's presidential campaigns, The Nation newspaper reported.

"Sometimes when our team was overwhelmed and we needed graphics, I sent (material) their way and they paused whatever they were doing and did me the favour," he said in a Facebook post.

"They visited Mombasa, Homa Bay, (Masai) Mara, nyama choma joints and loved our dance joints too. They invited me to India; I told them I would visit after (the) elections. Their eyes were primarily on enjoying Kenya as much as they could. When they sat down, they produced very appealing content," he added.

The revelation comes against a backdrop of the disbandment of the Special Service Unit (SSU), a group that has been accused of extrajudicial killings. The team is suspected to be behind the disappearance of the two Indians.

President Ruto ordered the disbandment of SSU last Saturday after a probe into the disappearance of the two Indians was linked to the unit, the report said.

A total of 21 detectives who served under the unit have been summoned to the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) headquarters in Nairobi on Friday, it added.

And now Itumbi claims that the two Indians and their driver could be dead. He did not offer any proof, only promising a part two of his expose.

"As usual, they (Zaid and Khan) always did something extra. A meme here, a video there, a box quote and much more?&nbsp;We even had a Telegram group that rarely went silent, with endless ideas,"&nbsp;he said.

Just two days before they returned to India, Itumbi recalled, he learnt that the duo had lost a phone during a night out.

"They could not be reached. Just the other day, I finally got to know their painful last moments in the hands of people whose only mission was to ensure Dr Ruto does not become President even if it means killing people," he said.

India has been in touch with the Kenyan authorities on the matter, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in New Delhi last week.

"As far as we understand, there were two Indian nationals, Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan and Zaid Sami Kidwai, and they have been missing in Kenya since mid-July. A police complaint was filed there soon after that," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said.

"Subsequently, a habeas corpus petition was filed in the Kenyan court. We understand that the issue is now sub-judice in the high court of Kenya and a number of hearings have taken place," Bagchi added.

He said the Indian High Commission in Kenya has been in continuous touch with the Kenyan authorities.

"We are also, I think, in touch with some family members? We are keeping a close eye on the issue? I am afraid they're still missing," Bagchi said.

As part of a US State Department Sports Envoy programme, two American expert swimming coaches are travelling to fishing hamlets across India to empower the girls there. The initiative is aimed at imparting swimming and life skills and ocean conservation to a select group of girls, who belong to the underprivileged community.&nbsp;

The experts—Julia Harbaugh and Nora Deleske—have been to Kovalam in Tamil Nadu and Kozhikode in Kerala as part of their programme.

According to them, sports are being used as a tool to boost the girls' confidence, allow them to enjoy the water safely, increase their understanding of the fragility of the ocean environment and impart life skills.&nbsp;

San Francisco-based Julia is one of the few trainers in the world with expertise in imparting swimming training to visually challenged persons.

A native of Arizona, Nora Deleske was the captain of the Arizona State University (ASU) swimming and diving teams. She had also competed in the 2016 and 2021 US Olympic trials.&nbsp;

The three-day hands-on workshops were conducted by an NGO, United Way of Chennai, in association with the US Consulate General, Chennai.

The experts also focussed on helping the participants overcome their fears and build soft skills like teamwork, goal-setting and the importance of perseverance.

Prior to the workshop, they engaged with the participants via online sessions to build rapport and talk openly about women's health and hygiene.&nbsp;

"We are excited about this initiative for these young girls. Even though we have been working with children over the years, empowering young women through a life skill such as open water swimming is a novel idea. We can't wait to see the impact this will create on the girl's self-confidence levels and what it will mean for their families and community", said Meenakshi Ramesh, Executive Director, United Way of Chennai.&nbsp;

The three-day hands-on workshops were conducted by an NGO, United Way of Chennai, in association with the US Consulate General, Chennai. The experts also focussed on helping the participants overcome their fears and build soft skills like teamwork, goal-setting and the importance of perseverance. Prior to the workshop, they engaged with the participants via online sessions to build rapport and talk openly about women's health and hygiene. "We are excited about this initiative for these young girls. Even though we have been working with children over the years, empowering young women through a life skill such as open water swimming is a novel idea. We can't wait to see the impact this will create on the girl's self-confidence levels and what it will mean for their families and community", said Meenakshi Ramesh, Executive Director, United Way of Chennai.

US swimming experts impart training and life skills to underprivileged girls in India

If you live in India and are watching this video in the comfort of your home without any fear of harm to you, chances are, you have the Indian Army to thank. Here, let's explore in brief the history, growth, size, weaponry and capabilities of the battle-hardened, valiant Indian Army.

India@75: The might of the Indian Army

As India celebrates 75 years of independence, take a look at times when India rescued its expats during crises.

India@75: The great Indian rescue: Times when India rescued expats

Since time immemorial, Indians have contributed richly to the field of science and technology. The strong legacy has continued after Independence as well. The last 75 years have seen several big names dominate the field.

India@75: Top Indian scientists

As a 17-year-old Indian student being asked to decide on a major while choosing which university I would attend, I was told there was no need to fret. I would eventually find my interests, and everyone would support me. I did find my passion in journalism and dramatic writing, but instead of support, I found panic from my family’s side. “Dramatic writing?” “English?” “The arts?!” “Who does that?” “Are you okay?” “Have you caught a fever?” These questions played on repeat when I announced my decision. Everyone told me I was making the biggest mistake of my life by studying what I actually enjoyed. I was labeled a failure without being given a chance to prove myself.

I escaped to the United States, wholeheartedly believing things would be different here. I still remember my first day attending a dramatic writing class at New York University. It was a seminar of twenty white students, sitting around a chestnut brown table, conversing with their peers and barely able to contain their excitement about the Broadway musicals opening soon. And then I stepped in. The excitement subdued, and every eye in the room was on me. Weirdly, it felt as if I was a Broadway star who had walked in. Only, I wasn’t a celebrity but an outcast in the group of people surrounding me. I walked toward the only empty seat and awkwardly sat down, avoiding making eye contact with anyone. And then it happened. The questions were back. “Umm… are you Indian?” someone asked, and I said, “Yes.” “And you’re studying writing?” someone else asked, and I said, “Yes.” Murmurs about me resumed, and it felt as if I’d never left India to begin a new life in the first place.&nbsp;

Such episodes continue to occur, which constantly make me question whether I even belong in these classrooms and pique my curiosity about the connection between my Indian identity and studying the arts. Anybody should be allowed to study what they love without facing societal pressure, as the days when conventional careers, including becoming an engineer, were the only options are long gone.&nbsp;

There’s a common belief in India that anybody pursuing the arts does so because they didn’t get admission to any other stream of study. The arts aren’t the top choice of study for 80 to 90 per cent Indian students, and many are deterred from opting for them. MS Wankhede, an associate professor of English at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, told the Times of India&nbsp;that arts professors have to constantly remind students that they’re not inferior to those who study math or science. For the longest time, I fell into the same trap of believing that just because I wasn’t good at math and was more creatively inclined that I wasn’t good enough. The misconception that studying the arts will limit career opportunities for students or that they will struggle more post-graduation almost ruined my chance of writing my first novel and pursuing other artistic interests.&nbsp;

People don’t realize that every field comes with its own set of challenges. Like me, people who decide to dig their hands in the artistic world are aware of the tumultuous journey ahead. If we’re still choosing to tread forward, then it’s our choice, and society should have no say in it. Tisch sophomore Ricky Kapoor, originally from India, struggles with society’s disapproval of his choice to study Film and Television, too. During those times, he reminds himself that the reason he became a filmmaker wasn’t to become rich and famous but to tell authentic stories. “I know the rejection I’m going to face in the future, the heartbreak I’m going to feel,” Kapoor said. “But I know what I have to do when it comes, which is just keep going and not say no to myself.” Because of the lack of support many students get from society, giving up can seem the most viable option. Society doesn’t realize that they’re murdering someone’s dream, someone’s chance to actually be happy and pursue their passion.

Such societal pressure has caused many Indian students to commit suicide. According to the National Crimmes Record Bureau, one student commits suicide every hour in India. One of the main reasons behind these suicides is the pressure to get into the Indian Institutes of Technology, public technical and research institutes located across the country, and some of the world’s toughest colleges to get into. Harvard University has an acceptance rate of 5%, while IITs have one between 0.5% and 2.5%. It’s little wonder that Indian parents want their children to get into an IIT because it looks like the pinnacle of achievement. But that’s not the biggest problem: not all students who get into an IIT want to become engineers. Many of them don’t even know what engineering is as they’ve been so focused on cracking the exams and following the “correct” path. Some of the IITs report the highest suicide rates because students are forced to study a subject they don’t have a taste for.&nbsp;

Similar to how students’ creativity and ingenuity are being stifled, funding and promoting the arts and humanities in India are dying, as well. The leading STEM schools in the country receive more government funds&nbsp;than the top liberal arts university. Moreover, colleges across the world infuse their STEM degree with a set of general education classes, but in India, grades as low as 11th and 12th have students who are devoid of any content resembling history, literature, or creative writing. I first discovered my passion for dramatic writing when I took a theatre class in my international high school, which has grown to become my area of study at university. But the Indian students who are devoid of such courses aren’t even given the opportunity to see what’s out there, and it’s a shame that they probably never will because of the engineering mindset shoved down their throats since the day they were born.&nbsp;

How did this Indian obsession with engineering begin in the first place? The first group of Indians to identify themselves as engineers was the East India Company's&nbsp;corps of military engineers who built roads, bridges and fortifications for the army. A select few Indian engineers were allowed to join the British team, and their job came with great prestige. When the Britishers left, Indian engineers saw themselves as building not only dams but also the nation, which helped them forge a common identity. Today, India leads in developing countries when it comes to having a positive perception of engineering in terms of status. In doing so, the country has forgotten about other professions on the rise.&nbsp;

Some professions can be deemed unconventional and risky, yet many Indians continue to look up to any individual who follows that path. Chetan Bhagat, whose books have sold an estimated seven million copies, has established himself as one of India's top authors. But before becoming an author, Bhagat was an investment banker who graduated from an IIT. He confesses that he never enjoyed studying at IIT and, in reality, loved writing. Bhagat soon switched careers and continues to tell students in seminars today to study what they’re passionate about. Bhagat was lucky enough to be allowed to pursue his writing dreams, but what about the rest of us? When parents hand Bhagat’s books to their children, why don’t they encourage them to become the next Chetan Bhagat? Don’t give us his books if you’re going to take them all away one day to replace them with IIT books, which not all of us are interested in reading.&nbsp;

Being the only Indian in my dramatic writing courses at NYU sucks, but at least one thing has changed. After talking to some professors about the struggle between my ethnicity and my college majors and challenging myself to read and write more, I’ve become more confident in my choice.

Before classes, there are fewer times when I feel the need to tell myself: “You belong here.” Regardless of their nationality, every person should be able to practice their art without feeling ashamed or doubtful. Just because we’ve been wired to think that engineering guarantees success and is the ultimate goal doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the path for everyone. India is doing better than before with the opening of institutes such as Ashoka University, which encourages students to pursue a liberal arts education. But this is just the beginning. No Indian student should hear “Oh, that’s interesting!” when their Indian family and friends learn about their creative major because what they really mean by “interesting” is “Oh, she’s doomed for failure!” No student should see their family boast about their children who got into an IIT while sidelining their other kid trying to make it in the creative world. By crushing a child’s dreams, you’re destroying, no, pillaging their entire life. You don’t have the right to do that.
