Japan is famous for its unique culture, organisation skills as well as cleanliness. In an effort to understand the level of cleanliness in Japan, an Indian influencer decided to test its streets during her trip to the country. The video has since gone viral on the internet. Indian influencer Simran Balar Jain decided to ditch her shoes and walk wearing only sparkling clean white socks on the streets of Japan. In the viral video, the influencer is seen walking through the country's streets most innovatively. At the start of the clip, Jain is seen entering a store to buy a brand-new pair of plush, white socks. However, instead of making efforts to keep them clean and pristine, Jain removes her shoes and instead wears those socks while walking on the streets of Japan. In the video, Jain is seen walking along the country's footpaths and across zebra crossings as she tours the streets. Kamala Harris will be spending Tuesday's election night at the campus of her alma mater, Howard University. If Harris clinches victory, she will have many firsts to her name as the new president. Harris will be the first woman, the first person of South Asian descent and the first non-White woman to become the US President. Harris has projected herself as a symbol of “generational change” and accused his opposition of “seeking revenge” and called Trump a “threat” to American democracy. (With inputs from agencies)

The world is facing a climate crisis, and developing nations are bearing the brunt of its consequences. To help these countries adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change, a global commitment was made in 2009: developed nations would provide $100 billion in climate finance annually by 2020. However, this promise has largely gone unfulfilled.

<h2><strong>Is tipping mandatory?</strong></h2>

<p>To understand the controversy behind Sharma’s post, let’s dive into why tipping is important in the US.</p>

<p>Tipping culture in the US is vastly different from India. The standard tip should be about 15 to 20 per cent of the total bill.</p>

<p>If the customer has not paid the tip, it is considered rude and ill-mannered. The reason behind this culture&nbsp;is that the federal minimum wage in the US&nbsp;is estimated to be $7.25 per hour.</p>

<p>However, most of the staff in the service industry do not get paid up to their minimum wage, so the tips received from customers help them sustain themselves.</p>

<p>Employees who are seen to get the most tips are waitstaff and bartenders and their minimum wage is up to $2.3 per hour.</p>

<p>If we talk about the Indian tipping system, it is much more relaxed. As tips here are seen as a reward for good service.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Netizens opine</strong></h2>

<p>Given&nbsp;the proper context about the social situation in America, Sharma’s post was understandably&nbsp;scrutinised. His post got 460,000 views.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While many supported the argument, others criticised it. One X user commented, “You are the reason why the globe is becoming racist against Indians. Stop being so cheap.”</p>

<p>Another user in support said, “I don’t know about America, but shouldn’t tips be given as a way of saying thank you, not as a compulsion?”</p>

Baltimore bridge collapse: Authorities open second temporary channel to ease traffic

<p>Days after the Baltimore bridge collapse, authorities on Sunday (Mar 31) night announced that a temporary channel would be opened to allow some commercial vessels to resume operations in and out of the port. This comes as clean-up efforts continue following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.</p>

<h2><strong>Effort towards opening the main channel</strong></h2>

<p>Unified Command, a coalition of federal and state agencies overseeing the response to the bridge collapse, in a statement said that the Captain of the Port (COTP) was "preparing to establish a temporary alternate channel on the northeast side of the main channel in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Bridge for commercially essential vessels."</p>

<p>"This will mark an important first step along the road to reopening the port of Baltimore," said Captain David O'Connell, Federal On-Scene Coordinator, Key Bridge Response 2024.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"By opening this alternate route, we will support the flow of marine traffic into Baltimore," he said.</p>

<p>However, the statement did not specify which vessels will be permitted to use the alternate channel or provide a timeline for its opening.</p>

<p>Aside from the upcoming temporary channel, an existing safety zone around the collapsed site remains in effect. This, as per the statement, is "intended to protect personnel, vessels, and the marine environment."</p>
