<p>BCCI started its hunt for the new coach on May 13 by opening up the application process.&nbsp; The&nbsp;job description stated that the candidate should be below 60 years of age and must have played a minimum of 30 Tests or 50 ODIs.</p>

<p>It added that the applicant should have performed a similar role as a full member of Test&nbsp; nation&nbsp;for a minimum of two years.</p>

<p>"The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates."</p>

<p>Gambhir ticks all the boxes and could be the one who ultimately takes up the job. The only hindrance could&nbsp;be Gambhir's young family as the job would require him to be on the road for nearly 10 months&nbsp;in&nbsp;a year, up until 2027.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former India wicketkeeper and national selector Saba Karim believes Shikhar Dhawan would not make it to the Indian team's&nbsp;playing XI&nbsp;for the next South Africa trip since the team already has proven and in-form openers in Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.</p>

<p>India on Tuesday pulled out of next year's Birmingham Commonwealth Games' hockey competition, citing COVID-19 concerns and UK's discriminatory quarantine rules for travellers from the country, a day after England's withdrawal from the junior men's World Cup in Bhubaneswar over similar reasons.</p>

<p>Hockey India President Gyanandro Ningombam communicated the federation's decision to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra in a letter.</p>

<p>Hockey India reasoned that there is only a 32-day window available between the Birmingham Games (July 28-August 8) and the Hangzhou Asian Games (September 10-25).</p>

<p>HI said it can't risk sending its players to the UK, which has been one of the worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic.</p>

<p>"You will appreciate that the Asian games is the Continental qualification event for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and keeping the priority of the Asian Games in mind, Hockey India can not risk any members of the Indian teams contracting COVID-19 during the Commonwealth Games," Ningombam wrote.</p>

<p>"Therefore, Hockey India will not be sending its men and women teams to Commonwealth Games 2022 and are informing you in advance to kindly notify the Organisers to identify reserve teams."</p>

<p>The UK recently refused to recognise India's COVID-19 vaccination certificates and imposed a 10-day hard quarantine on travellers from the country even if they were fully vaccinated.</p>

<p>The discrimination was prominently mentioned in Ningombam's letter to the IOA President, who has issued instructions for co-ordination with the sport's world governing body FIH for the details of the reserve teams. Batra heads the FIH as well.</p>

<p>The junior India shooting team is expected to win a rich haul of medals on Thursday, competition day two, of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship, currently underway in the Peruvian capital of Lima.</p>

<p>Qualification rounds of six individual events, all Olympic disciplines, took place on opening day on Wednesday, whereas as many as 12 Indians made the finals cut. All the six finals are scheduled for day two with the Indians already looking at four gold medals in the corresponding team events.</p>

<p>Similarly in the Junior Women's 10M Air Rifle, Mehuli Ghosh led a trio of Indians into the finals. Her 630.9 was overall third while Ramita shot 629.8 and Nisha Kanwar 629.1 to make it through in fourth and fifth positions.</p>

<p>In the Junior Men's 10M Air Pistol, Naveen topped the standings with a 584 to make the finals cut. Sarabjot Singh also shot the same score to finish second on lesser inner 10s. Vijaveer Sidhu was the third Indian to make it through, finishing fourth with a score of 581.</p>

Karthik looked fluent and confident and struck the ball crisply. The 32-year-old has lived under the shadows of MS Dhoni for long and is now trying to establish his place in the side. This performance will now perhaps help him make a case for himself as a permanent member of the side and can be seen as his second coming.</p>

Sundar was adjudged the Man of the Series for his 8 wickets at an astounding economy rate of 5.70. The young man showed great maturity and seems to have a calm head on his shoulders. He varied his pace and length regularly and read the batsmen astutely. With age on his side and the performance he has shown in this series, Washington Sundar can definitely be considered as one for the future. With him as a regular in the limited overs teams, India’s bowling would look stronger than ever.</p>

<p><strong>India’s fast bowling reserves are weak</strong></p>

<p>One of the biggest disappointments for India in this tri-series was how poorly India’s fast bowlers performed. The likes of Shradul Thakur, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammad Sriraj and even Vijay Shankar were really mediocre and patchy. They could not find the right lengths to bowl and were consistently punished. Save for a few moments here and there, the seam bowlers for India were rather ordinary and all had economy rates of well over 9 in the series which is unacceptable in this format. This will be a worry for the Indian selectors and should force them to look for other options to bolster the Indian fast bowling reserve which might come in handy in future tournaments.</p>

<p><strong>Rohit the captain</strong>&nbsp<br />
Although he was a stand-in captain, Rohit Sharma did a very fine job leading a second-string Indian side in this tournament and came out with flying colours. He was pro-active with his bowling changes and even though his fast bowlers went for a lot of runs, he never let that get to him. Rohit read the game situations well and affected the field placements and bowling changes very shrewdly. He tried to give opportunities to all the players in the squad and was always seen talking to the youngsters, backing them steadfastly. Rohit has a lot of experience leading the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. And he has shown his leadership qualities in international cricket too now. Perhaps, the selectors can consider having him as the permanent T20I captain for India, which will also give some relief to Virat Kohli.&nbsp</p>

He tried to give opportunities to all the players in the squad and was always seen talking to the youngsters, backing them steadfastly. Perhaps, the selectors can consider having him as the permanent T20I captain for India, which will also give some relief to Virat Kohli. Opinion: T20 Nidahas paves future for many in upcoming ODI series

<p>The recently concluded Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka, which India won in sensational fashion off the very last ball, was a massive success. It was one of the most watched tournaments in recent times and gave us an idea that tri-series are the future of T20 Internationals.</p>

<p>The tournament was fiercely contested between hosts Sri Lanka, along with India and Bangladesh. Team India, with a second-string side, managed to put together an impressive show through the course of the series and the team management would be thoroughly pleased with this effort.</p>

<p>There were a lot of takeaways for India in the Nidahas Trophy. Here is a look at a few of them.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Dinesh Karthik&rsquo;s second coming</strong></p>

<p>Dinesh Karthik wasn&rsquo;t dismissed in the Nidahas Trophy. In whatever little opportunities he got, the wicket-keeper batsman made the most of it. His unbeaten 39 off 25 balls helped India beat Sri Lanka in the league stages while chasing a target of 153. And then he played the innings of his life with that cameo of 29 off 8 balls in the final against Bangladesh that gave India one of its most stunning wins ever. Karthik looked fluent and confident and struck the ball crisply. The 32-year-old has lived under the shadows of MS Dhoni for long and is now trying to establish his place in the side. This performance will now perhaps help him make a case for himself as a permanent member of the side and can be seen as his second coming.</p>

<p><strong>Washington Sundar is one for the future</strong></p>

<p>18-year-old Washington Sundar was the biggest positive for India from this series. The young off-spinner was absolutely brilliant with his bowling in the Powerplays and hardly gave the batsmen an inch. Sundar was adjudged the Man of the Series for his 8 wickets at an astounding economy rate of 5.70. The young man showed great maturity and seems to have a calm head on his shoulders. He varied his pace and length regularly and read the batsmen astutely. With age on his side and the performance he has shown in this series, Washington Sundar can definitely be considered as one for the future. With him as a regular in the limited overs teams, India&rsquo;s bowling would look stronger than ever.</p>

<p><strong>India&rsquo;s fast bowling reserves are weak</strong></p>

<p>One of the biggest disappointments for India in this tri-series was how poorly India&rsquo;s fast bowlers performed. The likes of Shradul Thakur, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammad Sriraj and even Vijay Shankar were really mediocre and patchy. They could not find the right lengths to bowl and were consistently punished. Save for a few moments here and there, the seam bowlers for India were rather ordinary and all had economy rates of well over 9 in the series which is unacceptable in this format.
