As part of its grand celebrations, the festival has announced that the esteemed Indian actress, Shabana Azmi, will do the distinguished honour of hoisting the Indian national flag on the morning of 12th August, in commemoration of the Independence Day weekend in India.

Shabana Azmi, an iconic and legendary figure in Indian cinema, holds a prominent position in the hearts of movie enthusiasts worldwide, said a release from the festival organisers.

With her exceptional talent and profound performances, she has etched an indelible mark in the Indian film diaspora, making her one of the most celebrated actresses of her time. A recipient of five National Film Awards, her versatile roles in acclaimed films such as Sparsh, Arth, Masoom, City of Joy, Tehzeeb, and Midnight's Children have not only won her numerous accolades but have also inspired a generation of actors and storytellers.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), the biggest celebration of Indian cinema outside of India, is all set to kick off its highly anticipated annual event from the 11th to the 20th of August this year. As part of its grand celebrations, the festival has announced that the esteemed Indian actress, Shabana Azmi, will do the distinguished honour of hoisting the Indian national flag on the morning of 12th August, in commemoration of the Independence Day weekend in India. Shabana Azmi, an iconic and legendary figure in Indian cinema, holds a prominent position in the hearts of movie enthusiasts worldwide, said a release from the festival organisers. With her exceptional talent and profound performances, she has etched an indelible mark in the Indian film diaspora, making her one of the most celebrated actresses of her time. A recipient of five National Film Awards, her versatile roles in acclaimed films such as Sparsh, Arth, Masoom, City of Joy, Tehzeeb, and Midnight's Children have not only won her numerous accolades but have also inspired a generation of actors and storytellers. Shabana Azmi to hoist Indian flag at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne’s Independence Day celebration

The highly acclaimed film The Storyteller, starring the renowned actor Paresh Rawal, after having been screened in Busan, is now all set to have its Australian premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne next month in August.

Directed by Anant Narayan Mahadevan, the film is based on the legendary Satyajit Ray's short story Golpo Boliye Tarini Khuro&nbsp;and explores the themes of originality versus plagiarism. Alongside Rawal, the film features an exceptional ensemble cast including Adil Hussain, Revathi, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Anindita Bose, and Jayesh More.

The Storyteller&nbsp;is a cinematic gem that pays homage to the literary genius of Satyajit Ray. Based on the renowned author's celebrated short story, the film delves into the captivating conflict between originality and plagiarism. Through compelling storytelling and thought-provoking performances, The Storyteller&nbsp;poses important questions about creativity, inspiration, and the ethical boundaries of artistic expression.

Tarini Ranjan Bandhopadhyay played by Paresh Rawal, is an unconventional narrator, who has gained a reputation for his tendency to change professions, having transitioned between 32 jobs throughout his working life. At the age of 60, residing in Kolkata and widowed, Tarini's sole regret is his inability to fulfil his late wife Anuradha's long-standing wish for a vacation. With retirement now upon him and an abundance of free time, Tarini finds himself distanced from his loved ones. In The Storyteller, we delve into the life of a prosperous entrepreneur who enlists the services of a storyteller to alleviate his insomnia.

Paresh Rawal's portrayal in the lead role is a testament to his unparalleled talent and versatility as an actor. Known for his remarkable performances in both comedic and dramatic roles, Rawal brings depth and authenticity to his character in The Storyteller. His on-screen presence is complemented by a stellar ensemble cast, who deliver powerful performances that further elevate the film's impact.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) has announced the nominations for its highly anticipated 14th edition. As the largest Indian film festival outside of Indian soil, IFFM continues to captivate audiences worldwide. This year, the festival proudly welcomes a new addition to its esteemed jury panel, the Oscar-winning Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford, renowned for directing acclaimed films such as Driving Miss Daisy&nbsp;and The Contract.

IFFM is the only Indian film festival outside of the Indian soil that is backed by the government of another country and with that, IFFM stands as a remarkable celebration of Indian cinema and cultural exchange. With its finger on the pulse of the industry, the festival has embraced the changing landscape of film consumption by introducing the OTT Awards in 2021. Now in its third year, the OTT Awards will honour outstanding achievements in three categories.

The IFFM advisory committee, after meticulous consideration of hundreds of films and series from across Indian cinema, have finalised the nominations of films and series which have released between 1st June 20222 to 31st May 2023. Leading the pack in the film categories, including Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Actress, are notable productions such as Darlings,&nbsp;Monica O My Darling,&nbsp;Ponniyin Selvan,&nbsp;and Kantara.&nbsp;These films have captivated audiences with their stellar performances, engaging storytelling, and artistic excellence. The nominations reflect the diversity and richness of Indian cinema, acknowledging the blockbusters and the indie gems on the same platform.

In the OTT category, series such as Trial By Fire,&nbsp;Jubilee,&nbsp;and Delhi Crime Season 2&nbsp;have garnered the highest number of nominations. These exceptional series have made a significant impact with their compelling narratives, outstanding performances, and remarkable production values. For OTT nominations, only series on platforms which are available to be streamed in the Australian market have been considered.

R Balki's highly anticipated film Ghoomer starring Abhishek Bachchan and Sayami Kher is all set to premiere at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) in August. The film will open the 14th edition of the festival which will take place in Melbourne, Australia from August 11 to 20, 2023.&nbsp; 
 
Ghoomer also stars Angad Bedi and Shabana Azmi. The film tells a triumphant story of a paraplegic sportsperson portrayed by Saiyami Kher, who excels as a cricketer under the guidance of her coach, played by Abhishek Bachchan. R Balki, renowned for his emotionally charged narratives, has solidified his position as one of Indian cinema's most powerful storytellers. 
 
Balki and Abhishek Bachchan said in a joint quote, “It’s indeed an honour and pleasure for us that Ghoomer will be the opening film at the IFFM." 
 
"Ghoomer is a story of turning adversity into an advantage. A story of innovation when faced with extermination. Ghoomer is a tribute to Sport and the reservoir of human resilience. It’s only fitting for a film that believes that ‘Sport makes life worth living’ to be launched in the Sport capital of the world, Australia, land of the MCG."

King Khan, who is known for his philanthropic work, is back with sponsoring a scholarship, which is in partnership with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and La Trobe University. The scholarship is named after Khan.&nbsp; 
 
The registration for the scholarship started recently on August 18 and will go all the way till September 23. The first ever scholarship was announced at the 2019 festival of which SRK was the chief guest and visited the university to launch this program. Soon after, India’s Gopika Kottantharayil Bhasi from Thrissur in Kerala was awarded the maiden scholarship. The university expressed that this was their most applied for scholarship with over 800 applicants and hence the scholarship has been re-introduced courtesy of the festival that facilitated it. 
 
The top criteria for the selection are that the candidate has to be a female Indian national who should be residing in India and should have completed a master of Research degree in the past 10 years. The selected student will be receiving a four-year La Trobe University Full-Fee Research Scholarship.

India is filled with talent and spark and all it takes is to ignite that spark. SRK’s association with IFFM goes back a long time, but now, since it’s for a cause, it makes it even more special. La Trobe University is one of the leading universities in Australia and getting a chance to study at this university has been on the wishlist of many students.”

The announcement of the scholarship was made in 2019 during the physical event of IFFM. But due to the pandemic and travel restrictions, it was put to a halt for the last two years. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has added another golden feather to his already-decorated hat. The star has won the 'Best Actor of the Year' award at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IIFM) 2022. Singh was felicitated for portraying Indian cricketer Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan's directorial '83'. The film celebrates India's first Cricket World Cup win.

Elated on receiving the award, Singh said, "I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the jury members at IFFM for bestowing me with the Best Actor of the Year Award for my role as Kapil Dev `83` one of the most loved films of my career! It`ll always be one of the most cherished films in my filmography."

The actor further added, "But more than the accolades, it`s the process of making this film that I will cherish the most. I`m grateful to Kabir Sir for giving me this opportunity for guiding me and for inspiring me with his leadership. I share this honour with the cast and crew of 83 who are so dear to me, and with whom I share a very, very warm bond."

Singh dedicated this honour to the entire cast of the film. "I dedicate this honour to Kapil's Devils, a fine bunch of gentlemen who dared to dream, who through their efforts and achievements showed us that we Indians can be the best in the world," Singh said.

After its London premiere, Taapsee Pannu starrer 'Dobaaraa' directed by Anurag Kashyap is all set to open the upcoming Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2022. The story revolves around how a woman gets the opportunity to save the life of a 12-year-old boy who witnessed a death during a thunderstorm that took place 25 years ago by getting connected through the television set during a similar storm in the present. The film is a Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish movie ‘Mirage’.&nbsp; 
 
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is one of the biggest celebrations of Indian cinema outside of the sub-continent. After two years of the festival being held online, the festival is gearing up to be held physically this year with the vision of bringing the vibrancy of Indian cinema to where it belongs – on the big screen. With films like 'Dobaaraa', the IFFM team is bringing another exciting, diverse set of Indian cinema to Melbourne and developing a blockbuster program of supporting events along with the same. 
 
'Dobaaraa' will be the opening night film at IFFM 2022, for which both Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu would be traveling to Melbourne. Touted as a 'must-watch' through early screening across the world, the film's new-age and cutting edge narrative is being wholly loved and applauded all over the world.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is the largest festival of its kind in Australia, celebrating the best of Indian cinema in all its forms. The festival presents a diverse selection of movies that encapsulates the best of Indian cinema and films from the Indian subcontinent. An interesting fact that has caught the eye of all who are waiting in anticipation for the festival to begin is how the IFFM is creating a record with the most diverse female voices consisting of women filmmakers today.

These are films and filmmakers who have been selected to be a part of the official programming of the 12th edition of the IFFM this year. The IFFM has recently announced their programming schedule yesterday and out of the 100 films that have been selected, 33 of them are noted to be by strong female voices.&nbsp;Not only filmmakers of feature films but also women filmmakers in strong documentaries and short films have been selected this year.

Another interesting area of focus is how the films that have been chosen as well as the filmmakers who’ve made these films are on subjects that are absolutely unabashed and very unapologetic. They are extremely strong and diverse in terms of the subjects that they’re dealing with. One such film that has been selected for screening at the IFFM 2021 is a short film called ‘Bittu’. This 17-minute short defiantly questions why we humans are the way we are, and explores the trait of negligence in humanity. ‘Bittu’ is going to be screened at the opening night gala of the film festival along with the endearing documentary, Women Of My Billion (WOMB).

I have closely seen how Mitu Bhowmik takes a personal interest in encouraging women filmmakers and having diverse voices. She has been doing a commendable job year after year along with her team and it's always a pleasure to be back at the festival. I am making my fifth film in my village. If I have to, all my life I can make films in and around my village because I can see so many stories around me. Then imagine how many stories are waiting to be told in a country like India with so much diversity is communities, cultures, languages etc. And each woman would have different perpectives on freedom, identity, feminism, love etc. depending on who we are and where we come from. World over male filmmakers outnumber women filmmakers by a large margin, the stories are also often told from a male's perspective. Even the top international festivals like Cannes, Toronto and Berlin are seeing a gradual rise in films by women filmmakers and women jury members. May be it would take another 10 years to see a significant change. But I am very happy that there is a serious attempt to see stories from women's voice and perspective."

IFFM 2021 records 34 women filmmakers this year at the Indian festival

The award ceremony will take place virtually on August 20. The festival is presented by the Victorian government in Australia. It is an annual festival that takes place in Melbourne, Australia now in its 12th edition, the IFFM 2021 has gone virtual as well as physical due to the global pandemic.

The Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne, one of the biggest international Indian film festivals outside of the country, has just announced its nominations for its annual awards ceremony.&nbsp; 
 
This year the festival is launching three categories under the belt of web shows. The festival will recognise Best Series, Best Performance in a series each under the Actor and Actress category. 
 
This list of names includes extraordinary films of 2021 such as `Ludo` directed by Anurag Basu, Vidya Balan-starrer `Sherni` directed by Amit Masukar, `Soorarai Pottru` (Tamil) that stars and is produced by Suriya and directed by Sudha Kongara and `God on the Balcony`, an Assamese film starring Harish Khanna and directed by Biswajeet Bora. 
 
With over 100 films whose screening will be held during the event, this will be a celebration of diversity and the best of Indian cinema in all its forms. &nbsp; 
 
Keeping up with the growing trend of OTT shows dominating entertainment content consumption, the festival will recognise Best Series, Best Performance in a series each under the Actor and Actress category. The consideration of these shows are limited to only those platforms which are available to the Australian audiences. Actor Richa Chadha and filmmaker Onir have been elected as the jury for the Short Film Competition for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2021. 
 
The theme for this year`s short film competition is Modern Slavery and Equality. Richa is quite excited to attend the upcoming film festival as a judge. 
 
Sharing her happiness on the same, Richa said, "I feel completely honored to have the faith of members of IFFM in having me as their jury member to judge their Short Film Competition this year along with the lovely Onir. The theme of this year`s competition is, I believe, not only relevant but of extreme importance that needs our urgent attention." 
 
"I can`t wait to see the entries we get this time around the theme of equality and modern slavery. It`s important to celebrate all formats of entertainment and shorts are such a founding concept for budding Filmmakers and storytellers, to give voice and recognition to their style of filmmaking. Speaking from my personal experience having both acted and directed short films, it`s extremely tough to tell an entire story within a fairly short period of time," she added. 
 
Director Onir thinks the theme of the short film competition will give filmmakers a chance to explore different sides of society which reflect humanity. 
 
"As someone who has been associated with the festival right from the start, I am always fascinated and impressed by the depth and diversity of the short films that compere. I think that modern-day slavery runs in streams throughout our present world and the severe exploitation of people comes in many forms," he said. 
 
"And while our Constitution says that every single person has the Right to Equality, is that really the case in reality? This year`s theme gives filmmakers a chance to explore these sides of society which reflect the kind of humanity we have in present times. I am excited to see what the filmmakers come up with," he added. 
 
IFFM will be held both physically and virtually with the physical festival running from August 12 to August 20, while its digital edition will run from August 5 to August 30 Australia-wide.

Richa Chadha, Onir elected as jury for Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 

The Hindi film industry has been hit especially bad during the pandemic as we lost some of the greatest actors -- Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput.&nbsp;

To celebrate their contribution to cinema, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2020 will be commemorating their legacy and as&nbsp;part of IFFM's tribute section, the festival will be screening Irrfan Khan's 'Song of Scorpion', Rishi Kapoor's '102 Not Out' and Sushant Singh Rajput's 'Kedarnath' this year.&nbsp;

In a statement, festival Mitu Bhowmick Lange, said, "Artistes live on through their legacy. These were some fine men who did some incredible movies that resonated with everyone. It was important for us to celebrate their memory. We handpicked some great films &nbsp;for our audience so that we relive a little bit of their lives with them. Their loss to the film industry is irrevocable but the magic of their movies will continue to entertain generations hereafter."

It may be noted that while Kapoor's 102 Not Out (that also starreD Amitabh Bachchan) and Rajput's Kedarnath (which marked the debut of Sara Ali Khan were commercial successes in domestic and worldwide markets; it's the first time that the Indian diaspora world over will get access to Song of Scorpion. The 2017 film saw Irrfan Khan reunite with his 'Qissa' director Anup Singh and the movie starred Golshifteh Farahani. The film was reviewed after its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in 2017.

The Hindi film industry has been hit especially bad during the pandemic as we lost some of the greatest actors -- Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor and Sushant Singh Rajput. To celebrate their contribution to cinema, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2020 will be commemorating their legacy and as part of IFFM's tribute section, the festival will be screening Irrfan Khan's 'Song of Scorpion', Rishi Kapoor's '102 Not Out' and Sushant Singh Rajput's 'Kedarnath' this year. In a statement, festival Mitu Bhowmick Lange, said, "Artistes live on through their legacy. These were some fine men who did some incredible movies that resonated with everyone. It was important for us to celebrate their memory. We handpicked some great films for our audience so that we relive a little bit of their lives with them. Their loss to the film industry is irrevocable but the magic of their movies will continue to entertain generations hereafter." It may be noted that while Kapoor's 102 Not Out (that also starreD Amitabh Bachchan) and Rajput's Kedarnath (which marked the debut of Sara Ali Khan were commercial successes in domestic and worldwide markets; it's the first time that the Indian diaspora world over will get access to Song of Scorpion. The 2017 film saw Irrfan Khan reunite with his 'Qissa' director Anup Singh and the movie starred Golshifteh Farahani. The film was reviewed after its premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in 2017.

Ahead of August 2020, when the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will walk into its eleventh year with a grand opening, the team organised a prelude event in Mumbai on Wednesday before their main event in Melbourne. The multi-award-winning, much-loved film festival, considered amongst the largest Indian film festivals in the world has year after year attracted Bollywood’s creme de le crème, including Shah Rukh Khan as the chief guest last year. 
 
The festival’s association with La Trobe University culminated with the launch of the Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship, announced at the 2019 festival. It has been dedicated to female researcher - Gopika Kottantharayil Bhasi from Thrissur (Kerala), working on farming practices through animal science, ecology and molecular studies. She was chosen from over 800 Indian women for the honour. She was awarded the four-year scholarship at a ceremony in Mumbai on February 26 by Khan himself.&nbsp; 
 
In a statement, festival director Mitu Bhowmik said, “It has been an overwhelming journey that has gathered strength from all quarters in the past 10 years. The content landscape has changed and it’s heartening to see lines between commercial and independent cinema blurring. It’s the celebration of great stories now. IFFM continues its dedicated work towards supporting diverse voices and cinema. I am ecstatic about the initiatives we have taken, especially our association with La Trobe University, which takes us beyond what is covered under the purview of a standard film festival. We are looking at the growth of a community and taking the spirit of cinema to the masses. Having Mr Khan support a young researcher’s dream is a step towards us collectively furthering our social responsibilities. I and all of us at IFFM wish Gopika the very best. We hope to continue our work towards cinema and society unequivocally. We are also really excited to launch our Inclusive Film making workshops that further advocates true inclusive film making both behind and in front of a camera." 
 
Khan, in a statement, said, “I would like to personally thank Mitu. I take myself as the first-hand ambassador of Melbourne and I attended the Indian film festival of Melbourne last year and it was such a warm and hospitable experience. I’m a staunch believer in education and I would like to congratulate Gopika. The way forward for everyone is to gain an education and there’s never an end to learning. The key to Empower women world over is only by providing them with education. I think education in India or anywhere else in the world is a step forward. Gopika is fortunate that she’s soon going to be studying at La Trobe which is a fantastic university and I’m glad she’s getting this opportunity to do a PhD on her research. I admire Gopika’s dedication and determination. This scholarship will enable her to travel to La Trobe in Melbourne, Australia where she will pursue her dreams of helping to improve India’s agriculture sector. I wish her well."

Amongst the other highlights was the 20-year celebration of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar, who was in discussion with cinephiles and fans, a discussion with filmmakers Zoya Akhtar and Rima Das - two firebrand directors who are changing the narrative, Andhadhun sweeping major awards at the awards night with the luminous Tabu and Sriram Raghavan whisking away top gongs. Multiple regional films, especially 'Super Deluxe' emerged as a big winner with Vjay earning praises from King Khan, who called him the most wonderful actor he has ever seen.

The film was first screened at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and bagged a mega worldwide distribution deal. It’s scheduled for an India release later in the year.&nbsp;

Gurinder Chadha’s coming of age story 'Blinded by the Lights' to close IFFM 2019

The annual Indian Film Festival of Melbourne awards 2019 took place last night at the iconic Palais Theatre in Melbourne.&nbsp;

Zoya Akhtar's 'Gully Boy' walked away with the Best Film honour, whereas Vijay Sethupathi won the Best Actor for his widely acclaimed performance in Tamil film 'Super Deluxe' and Tabu was named Best Actress for her performance in 'Andhadhun'.&nbsp;

After winning the award, an ecstatic Zoya said, “I am so excited. I am not going to forget this evening. This is my first award in the capacity of a producer. 'Gully boy' was our first production. This is a good start. No one makes a movie alone and this wouldn’t be possible without my producers, my co-writer, my incredible actors and every member of my cast and crew. 54 invincible artists worked on this album. I owe this night to all of them.”

Upon receiving her award, Tabu said, “It’s my first time in Australia but I will remember it for the rest of my life. Thank you, Sriram for writing this for me. &nbsp;This character is a catalyst for change of roles for women that are being written and will be written in future. Thank you for trusting me with this character”.&nbsp;

The effervescent star said, “Awards are odd because to me an art form is judged for its quality feels counter-intuitive. Art is an expression and cinema is the ability to create emotions and share experiences through stories. To be an actor is to live to know that each one is a mere illusion. When you are making a movie you can change a lot by changing the angle of the light and it strikes you that life is a lot like that as well. It’s the simple things that can alter your journey and pondering makes your story worth telling. It’s not the awards you get, it’s just the part of creating a process that is an exhilarating experience for an artiste.”

Karan Johar spoke on two decades of his debut movie, 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai', “I am here today only because of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'. I can’t believe I actually became a filmmaker. My parents thought I am too emotionally fragile for the movie business. Two men who had faith in me more than I had on myself are Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan. Adi said I am melodramatic and thus I should be a filmmaker. SRK is bhai for me because over the years the friendship went into family and at some point, it transformed into sibling love. I don’t have siblings of my own but he is the older brother I never had, looking out for me at every step. During DDLJ shoot, he promised me that if I became a filmmaker he will work with me. He kept his word and in October 1997, I started the schedule of the film”. &nbsp;Johar was honoured with a special award as his iconic film completed 20 years.&nbsp;

IFFM Awards 2019: 'Gully Boy', 'Andhadhun' win top honours, Tabu, Vijay Sethupathi get acting awards

On August 8, the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne kickstarted their tenth-year celebrations with a star-studded&nbsp;press conference that took place on Thursday morning at Melbourne’s Central Business District. The award-winning film festival opened in the presence of Bollywood’s who’s who, amidst much frenzy and fanfare.&nbsp;

Taking charge of the event, Mitu Bhowmick Lange, director of the festival introduced the programs of the festival. Given that the list includes names like Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Tabu, none of who require an introduction, the excitement in the air was palpable. &nbsp;Martin Foley, Minister for Creative Industries for the Victorian Legislative Assembly, was present at the do.

Khan, the guest of honour at the festival was received with great love by the audience. The superstar, who has earlier shot 'Chak De! India' in the city, eloquently spoke about how much the place means to him.&nbsp; 
 
In his trademark charm, he quipped, “Many years ago in 2006-07, I came here when I was a rising superstar giving hit films after hit films. And now I am back here again, still, a rising superstar not making as many hit films (chuckles), as much as I would want to do so. I thank everyone for the opportunity to speak here. When I was shooting for 'Chak De' in the city, I used to play Trivial (a game) with crew members on set. Because of being an Indian film actor, we often feel localised. It’s thus heartening that because of the Indian diaspora - the second generation of Indians here (people like Mitu) Indian cinema is getting noticed. It’s extremely gratifying and makes every Indian proud. I speak for everyone on the dais today, that we are happy to be here.”

Witty and sharp as always Khan’s energy was matched by long time collaborator and dear friend Karan Johar. As their wise cracks entertained audiences, they also spoke about the overarching theme of courage.&nbsp;

Karan said, “I have to start by thanking Mitu who has been such a strong force right through the festival. It’s not the films but the people behind the festival who make it what it is. When I see this fantastic panel and we say the theme is courage, I say the panel is reflective of the glorious courage of our films and changing face of Indian cinema. It represents three feature films that have changed the way we look at Indian cinema and how it has travelled across the globe and will continue to do so. There is 'Super Deluxe', 'Andhadhun' and 'Gully Boy'. All of these have appealed not only to the diaspora but to international audiences across the globe, making Indian cinema so proud. And what to say about Shah Rukh Khan, he fully represents super stardom. I firmly believe, in the era we belonged to, the term is understood because of him. It’s not just about his large heart but his tremendous presence and aura. The fact that he is an outstanding actor is hugest icing on the cake. I look forward to my time here and all the selection of movies is on point and resonant with the theme of courage.”

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will go on from the 8th of August to the 15th of August in Melbourne, Australia. Taking charge of the event, Mitu Bhowmick Lange, director of the festival introduced the programs of the festival. Given that the list includes names like Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Tabu, none of who require an introduction, the excitement in the air was palpable. Martin Foley, Minister for Creative Industries for the Victorian Legislative Assembly, was present at the do. Khan, the guest of honour at the festival was received with great love by the audience. The superstar, who has earlier shot 'Chak De! India' in the city, eloquently spoke about how much the place means to him. In his trademark charm, he quipped, “Many years ago in 2006-07, I came here when I was a rising superstar giving hit films after hit films. And now I am back here again, still, a rising superstar not making as many hit films (chuckles), as much as I would want to do so. I thank everyone for the opportunity to speak here. When I was shooting for 'Chak De' in the city, I used to play Trivial (a game) with crew members on set. Because of being an Indian film actor, we often feel localised. It’s thus heartening that because of the Indian diaspora - the second generation of Indians here (people like Mitu) Indian cinema is getting noticed. It’s extremely gratifying and makes every Indian proud. I speak for everyone on the dais today, that we are happy to be here.” Witty and sharp as always Khan’s energy was matched by long time collaborator and dear friend Karan Johar. As their wise cracks entertained audiences, they also spoke about the overarching theme of courage. And what to say about Shah Rukh Khan, he fully represents super stardom. I firmly believe, in the era we belonged to, the term is understood because of him. It’s not just about his large heart but his tremendous presence and aura. The fact that he is an outstanding actor is hugest icing on the cake. Superstar Shah Rukh Khan gets to add another feather in his cap. The actor will be felicitated with the Excellence in Cinema award at the 10th edition of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne on August 8.

SRK will be presented the award by Linda Dessau, who was sworn in as Victoria`s 29th Governor, the first female in the role. The felicitation will take place at the Palais Theatre here.

Shah Rukh is also the chief guest at the festival, which will celebrate courage as its central theme in 2019.&nbsp;

Keeping with the festival`s theme of celebrating courage, it wants to pay tribute to SRK`s continuous contribution to cinema and popular culture in India with this award.&nbsp;

Global icon, multi-award winning actor, producer and women’s equality advocate, Shah Rukh Khan, will be awarded La Trobe University’s highest accolade during his visit to Australia for the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.&nbsp;

La Trobe is the first Australian University to award Mr Khan with an Honorary Doctor of Letters (honoris causa), in recognition of his efforts to support underprivileged children, his unwavering dedication to the fight for women’s empowerment through MEER Foundation and his unparalleled achievements in the Indian entertainment industry.

Meer Foundation is a philanthropic foundation named after Shah Rukh Khan’s father Meer Taj Mohammed Khan which aims to effect change at ground level and works to build a world that empowers women. One of the key focus areas under women empowerment has been to support the cause of acid attack survivors. The Foundation provides support to women victims of acid attacks and major burn injuries through a 360-degree approach that helps them with their medical treatment, legal aid, vocational training as well as rehabilitation and livelihood support.

La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Dewar, said Mr Khan’s philanthropic leadership closely aligns with the University’s values. “Mr Khan is a champion of societal change whose efforts to support the equality of women in India reflect La Trobe’s values of inclusiveness, equity and social justice. In the past eight years we have been proud to host India's iconic film stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Vidya Balan and Rajkumar Hirani with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne at La Trobe”.&nbsp;

Noted Assamese filmmaker Rima Das` 'Bulbul Can Sing' has been selected as the opening film of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne. The festival will begin on August 8.

For the opening night of the festival, now in its 10th year, Das` film will be screened. It showcases the stories of three teenagers who are trying to come to terms with their sexual identities while dealing with the ideals and morales of the villagers.&nbsp;

"I love the enthusiasm and exuberance of an opening night. So excited that `Bulbul Can Sing` is the opening night film at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne," Das said in a statement.&nbsp;

"The film has truly been special for me as a filmmaker. The response and appreciation we have received from across the places we had travelled to with the film, is also very special. I`m looking forward to the Australian premiere of the film and interacting with the audience there and having a conversation with them on cinema," she added. The film has already earned praises in various international film festivals including the Berlin Film Festival.&nbsp;

The filmmaker is best known for making 'Village Rockstars', an Assamese language film which won the National Award for Best Feature Film last year. It was even chosen as India`s official entry to the Oscars.
