India will play visitors Australia in the third One Day International (ODI) At Ranchi and the main focus will be on Mahendra Singh Dhoni, probably for two reasons - first, a pavilion will be inaugurated named after the former captain and second, the game could possibly be Dhoni's last homecoming.

India are playing their last 50-over games before they leave for ICC World Cup scheduled to be held in England.

Dhoni's unwillingness to hang up his boots, earlier, despite a run of lacklustre performances in 2017 made speculations rife that the 37-year-old will retire after the World Cup.

If yes, then a 3-0 lead in the five-match series will be a perfect parting gift for Ranchi's favourite man.

Meanwhile, just like the Sunil Gavaskar Stand at the Wankhede in Mumbai or the Virender Sehwag Gate at the Kotla in New Delhi, the JSCA Stadium will have its very own Mahendra Singh Dhoni Pavilion.

IND vs AUS, 3rd ODI: Is it the 'final' homecoming for MS Dhoni?

Virat Kohli looked like a 'Man on a Mission' wearing the camouflage army cap for the better part of his 41st ODI hundred but that wasn't enough to prevent India from losing the third ODI against Australia by 32 runs here Friday.

Usman Khawaja's hundred and Aaron Finch's 93 saw Australia put up a more than decent 313 for five and India could manage only 281 in 48.2 overs, that too solely due to Kohli's 123 off 95 balls.

It was yet another superlative effort from the Indian skipper, who lacked adequate support from the other end as Australia kept the five-match series consequential going into the fourth game in Chandigarh on Sunday.

Kohli scored his first 50 off 52 balls and the next 50 off just 33 balls which was sheer class as always. The acceleration was so sudden that it even took the Australian attack by surprise.

The skipper launched a brutal assault on the Australian bowlers. From gorgeous looking cover drives to delectable on-drives and those deft touches everything was present in a bouquet.

The true nature of the pitch helped him hit through the line as he smashed 16 fours and a six.

However Adam Zampa (3/70), by far the most impactful Aussie bowler, yorked the Indian skipper after having accounted for former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (26).

He did get hit but he would any day take wickets of Kohli, Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav (26) in return.

Kohli had three significant partnerships -- 59 with Dhoni for the fourth wicket, 88 with Jadhav for the fifth wicket and 45 with Vijay Shankar for the sixth -- but none good enough to take India across the line.

Shikhar Dhawan (1), Rohit Sharma (14) and Ambati Rayudu (2) were dismissed cheaply as India was left tottering at 27 for three and it was always a difficult task from there on.

Dhawan's slash was grabbed by Glenn Maxwell at point while Cummins angled one to trap Rohit Sharma plumb in-front.

Rayudu, not the most reliable player against quality fast bowlers, was beaten for pace by Cummins, who pegged his off-stump back.

After winning the toss, Indian pacers covered up commendably for a rare off-day endured by the spinners as visitors were restricted to 313 for five despite a 193-run opening stand between skipper Finch and Khawaja.

Khawaja (104, 113 balls) scored his maiden ODI ton while Finch (93, 99 balls) chose this particular match to get back to form.

Maxwell (47 off 31 balls) also contributed with lusty blows.

The Indian spinners -- Ravindra Jadeja (0/64 in 10 overs) and Kedar Jadhav (0/32 in 2 overs) -- were carted all around the park.

Kuldeep Yadav (3/64 in 10 overs), however, redeemed himself at the back-end of the innings.

The trio gave away 160 runs in 22 overs and it was left to Jasprit Bumrah (0/53) and Mohammed Shami (1/52 in 10 overs) to maintain the discipline during the final overs as the total could have gone close to the 350-run mark.

In the final 10 overs, Australia could score only 69 runs, despite being 244 for two after 40 overs, courtesy Bumrah and Shami who bowled 64 dot balls between them.

The fielding on the day was also way below par as Dhawan, at square leg, dropped Khawaja, who tried a reverse sweep, while batting on 17 off Jadeja's bowling.

Kohli, Kedar and Bumrah were all guilty of slip-ups on the field which also released the pressure on the visitors.

With the pitch on offer being the best in three games, the Australian openers showed positive intent from the start.

Shami's freak on-field injury also played its part as he had to leave the field temporarily after bowling the first three overs.

The momentum shifted from there on as both Finch and Khawaja played the spin troika brilliantly.

Both Finch and Khawaja and later Maxwell used big front-foot strides to counter the spinners. Whenever Kedar tossed it up, Finch cleared his front leg and fetched it from outside the off-stump, swatting him over deep mid-wicket.

If he bowled with a side-arm lower trajectory, Finch would rock back and play him square off the wicket.

In case of Jadeja, the inside-out shot and the cut was used liberally by Khawaja and Maxwell.

For Kuldeep, the Australians decided to plonk their front-foot, negate the spin and hit him through the line for sixes.

Kohli came in to bat early as Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed by a fantastic catch by Glenn Maxwell. Rohit Sharma followed Dhawan in the very next over and Ambati Rayudu two overs later as India were left reeling at 27/3 from 6.2 overs.

Kohli was joined by Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the middle and the duo put on a 59-run stand for the fourth wicket and recovered the innings to some extent before the Ranchi boy fell for 26 off Adam Zampa.

The 30-year-old reached his fifty off 52 balls in the 24th over.

This was the second century of the series for him and 8th against Australia in ODIs and 15th overall across all the formats against them.

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni's hometown Ranchi will be hosting the third One-day International (ODI) of the ongoing five-match series against Australia, on Friday. As the team landed in Ranchi, the former captain didn't wait for anyone and took over the driver duties for his teammates at the airport. In a video posted on Instagram, Dhoni can be seen sitting on the driver's seat with other teammates in one of his car. Later in the day, Dhoni and his wife Sakshi hosted a lavish dinner for the team at their farmhouse. Expressing gratitude towards Dhoni, Yuzvendra Chahal took to Twitter and posted a picture thanking the right-handed batsman for the dinner. With an unassailable 2-0 lead, dominant Indian cricket team will be eyeing the five-game ODI series, as the hosts will lock horns with visitors Australia in the third ODI in MS Dhoni's hometown, Ranchi, on Friday.

The Men In Blue, who lost the T20 series, won the first two ODIs held in Hyderabad and Nagpur, respectively.

However, Virat Kohli led side are facing some concerning issues with their top-order batting, considering the 2019 World Cup which is now just two months away.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan's poor run of form, in particular, has affected India's starts of late. To put things in perspective, Dhawan has scored only two half-centuries in the last 15 ODIs.

However, the hosts are unlikely to experiment with the winning combination in the third game also.

KL Rahul, who has found his form, may have to wait till India clinch the series, but the team management could well try him out at number three.

The two victories - by six wickets and eight runs - weren't exactly convincing but pulling off close matches under pressure will certainly add to team's confidence.

On the other hand, India's bowling has been flawless as Australia failed to reach 250 in both games.

Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and last game's hero Vijay Shankar have proved their worth. Considering the exposure he needs to be included in the World Cup playing XI, Shankar might be given the following three games also.

Meanwhile, Vice-captain and opener Rohit Sharma looked good in the first game but didn't do much damage in the next.

Kedar Jadhav and Dhoni shepherded India in the first match and didn't trouble the scorers in the second game.

Ambati Rayudu, whose only significant knock was the 90 against New Zealand in the last away series, has also been inconsistent and can be replaced by Rahul.

Australia, on the other hand, would do everthing to keep the series alive by playing their best in Friday's must-win fixture.

Australia have majorly fell behind India in run-making was the number of singles they took. The side is finding it difficult to keep the strike rotating.

Aaron Finch broke his batting rut, Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb looked impressive, and Marcus Stoinis essayed the finisher's role to near perfection in the second ODI. They would be expected to keep their momentum going.

Probable Squads:

India: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni (wk), Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rishabh Pant.

Australia: Aaron Finch (capt), Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Jhye Richardson, Adam Zampa, Andrew Tye, Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Alex Carey (wk), Nathan Lyon, Jason Behrendorff.

3rd ODI: India eye series win against Australia in Dhoni's hometown Ranchi

A lot has been said about MS Dhoni's humility and modesty. Another sheer example of his simplicity was visible when the former Indian captain politely declined to inaugurate the pavilion named after him at the JSCA Stadium.

As per reports, when Dhoni was approached to invite him to inaugurate the stand, the 37-year-old cricketer had said “Dada mein toh isika hissa hu. Ghar ka ladka apne hi ghar mein kya inaugurate karega? (I am a part of this ground. How can a person inaugurate something in his own home?)”

According to Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) secretary, Debashis Chakraborty, the JSCA had asked Dhoni to inaugurate the stand before the third ODI between India and Australia, that begins on Friday.

'Dhoni pavilion' to be inaugurated tomorrow, MS Dhoni refuses to cut the ribbon

A match-winning performance against Australia in the second ODI has boosted his chances of securing a World Cup spot but India all-rounder Vijay Shankar insists he is not losing sleep over his selection.

Captain Virat Kohli handed the ball to Shankar when Australia needed 11 runs from the last over and India required two wickets for a win. Shankar dismissed Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa in three balls, delivering when it mattered.

"I've said previously also that I never think about the selection or World Cup thing because it's a long way off from now. Every game is very important. I just look to give my best and win a game for the team," said the Tamil Nadu all-rounder.

Shankar said the tough final of the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka last year when he struggled to rotate strike was a big learning curve for him and it helped him in pressure situation today.

"To be honest the Nidahas Trophy has taught me too many things. Actually, I learnt to how to stay neutral after that. Be it high or low, it doesn't matter. I need to stay calm and neutral all the time."

"I was just ready for the challenge because I knew I had to bowl that one over. And I was just telling (myself) after the 43rd-44th over, I am going to bowl anytime. Maybe the last over and I should be ready to defend a total of 10 runs or 15 runs. So, I was mentally prepared for that."

The young all-rounder said experienced Jasprit Bumrah also guided him while approaching the final over.

"After the 48th over, Bumrah came up to me and said the ball is reversing a bit. He told me that I need to hit the right length on this wicket, where I give myself a chance to hit the stumps.

"When he said that, I was clear mentally that the only way to defend those runs is by picking wickets and if I can bowl straighter, (I'll) give myself a chance to take wickets," he said adding that he only bowled the last over for his club side before this.

Shankar said he would not over-react after taking match-winning wickets but is glad that he could help the team win.

"Just because I got the two wickets in the last over does not make me feel really high or happy."

He also batted well, contributed 46 runs off 41 balls before being run out in an unfortunate manner.

"When you get run out like this, I won't say unfortunate, that was struck and he (Kohli) hit the ball so hard and I didn't have much time to get back in (to the crease) but then these things happen in cricket. As long as I bat well and as long as contribute to the team's win, I will be happy."

A match-winning performance against Australia in the second ODI has boosted his chances of securing a World Cup spot but India all-rounder Vijay Shankar insists he is not losing sleep over his selection.

I need to stay calm and neutral all the time." "I was just ready for the challenge because I knew I had to bowl that one over. And I was just telling (myself) after the 43rd-44th over, I am going to bowl anytime. Maybe the last over and I should be ready to defend a total of 10 runs or 15 runs. So, I was mentally prepared for that." The young all-rounder said experienced Jasprit Bumrah also guided him while approaching the final over. "Just because I got the two wickets in the last over does not make me feel really high or happy." He also batted well, contributed 46 runs off 41 balls before being run out in an unfortunate manner. "When you get run out like this, I won't say unfortunate, that was struck and he (Kohli) hit the ball so hard and I didn't have much time to get back in (to the crease) but then these things happen in cricket. As long as I bat well and as long as contribute to the team's win, I will be happy."

World Cup is still a long way off, says Vijay Shankar on his selection chances

India's wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni is the only cricketer whose popularity as the best finisher has grown by leaps and bounds.

Lately, Dhoni played a major role in India's victory against Australia in the first ODI. The hosts were able to chase down a target of 237 runs, credits to Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav's unbeaten 59 and 81-run knock.

If able to, Dhoni would become the 6th Indian batsman to achieve this feat. The milestone would put him in the elite list of players including Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli.

The year 2019 has seen Dhoni in extraordinary form, especially against Australia.

Having bagged three back-to-back half-centuries in the ODI series during India's tour Down Under, the Ranchi-born batsman bagged his fourth consecutive in the format against the Aussies in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Having accumulated a total of 301 runs so far this calendar year, the 37-year-old is currently second in the list of players with the best average in one year (minimum 300 runs).

He is also the team's third-highest scorer against Australia, having reached the 1600-run mark in the format during the first ODI.

Held in Hyderabad, Indian bowlers did exceedingly well to restrict Australia to a low score of 236 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah had a rare off day but Mohammad Shami made sure that Australia was never getting away with the game as he picked the two wickets including that of in-form Glenn Maxwell.

For India, Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni took brought the game in control as the hosts, at one stage, were reeling at 99/4.

With the second ODI being played today at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur, India might make a few changes to test the bench strength.

Here's the predicted XI for the upcoming game.

#Top order

India might be tempted to go with Rahul to open the innings along with Rohit Sharma. The former has played really well in the T20I series. So if India are looking at him as a backup opener, then he must get a few games before the 2019 World Cup.

If Rahul comes in, Dhawan might have to sit out. The southpaw got out for a golden duck in the first ODI and has been inconsistent in recent days.

Virat Kohli will take his usual number three position as he perfectly fits the bill.

#2 Middle Order and All-rounders

Ambati Rayudu might bat at number four. He departed for 13 in the first but might surprise the visitors today.

Dhoni's presence among the youngsters makes a big difference. Kedar was more vocal about Dhoni's role in the first ODI. Hence, batting at number five suits him. It won't be a big decision if Dhoni is promoted to no 4.

Vijay Shankar had a very little role to play in the first ODI so we might see Pant at number six, where he can play the finisher's role. With Kedar and Jadeja doing well with the ball, India can go with an extra batsman or bowler or even an all-rounder.

He conceded only six runs in his first four overs. He also took two crucial wickets in the second spell. The 28-year-old looked really fit, and the Indian captain complimented him for looking so lean.

The number one ODI bowler for India, Jasprit Bumrah, took the wicket of Aaron Finch, after which he conceded a lot of runs. He had rare off day. However, he is one of the best Indian bowlers and one of the trump cards for the World Cup.

Kuldeep Yadav would play ahead of Chahal even in the second ODI too. He is a clear match winner, hence India are unlikely to rest him for the remaining games.

India vs Australia: India's predicted XI for the second ODI

Seven years into his retirement and former test stalwart Rahul Dravid is still making silent and important contribution for India, shaping the next generation of cricketers who will form the core of the team.

For a significant part of his 16-year test career, Dravid was the bulwark in India's star-studded batting lineup that also included Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

A classical batsman who built his game around a near-impregnable defence and an over-my-dead-body attitude, 'The Wall' was a purist's delight even though team mates often eclipsed his best efforts.

His 95 in his very first test innings was overshadowed by fellow debutant Ganguly's century in the 1996 match at Lord's. Three years later, Dravid hit 145 in a World Cup match against Sri Lanka but once again Ganguly's 183 was the talking point.

Dravid's 180 in the 2001 Kolkata test was crucial to India's stunning victory against Australia but still ended up being second fiddle to Laxman's epic 281.

Having quit international cricket with more than 24,000 runs against his name, Dravid has since taken charge of India's under-19 and A teams, overseeing the seamless transition of youngsters into the senior side.

Among his wards, Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shah and Hanuma Vihari have taken to test cricket like duck to water, all-rounder Vijay Shankar is staking World Cup claims, while Shubhman Gill broke into the ODI team in New Zealand.

"He's been a great mentor for us," Agarwal, who impressed on his maiden tour in Australia, told Reuters.

"We can always walk up to him, speak to him about our batting, about our thought process, the way we approach an innings or if there's any technical difficulty."

Shoehorned into the Indian side midway through the test series following an opening crisis, Agarwal impressed immediately with two 75-plus knocks in three innings.

The 28-year-old said Dravid helped him understand how to manage mental energy in the long format.

"We had a few chats about my game and he figured that part out," Agarwal added.

"He said 'to do well in test cricket, you need to manage your mental energy because you are up and about for all five days'. That's something we spoke about.

"Also we figured out things we can control in the middle and focus on doing them."

Lokesh Rahul is another beneficiary of Dravid's deep understanding of the game - accumulated over 164 tests and 344 ODIs - and batsmanship in particular.

Rahul, 26, was in crisis after a slump in form was followed by a brief suspension for inappropriate comments on a television chat show.

Sent home midway through the test series in Australia, Rahul joined the A team under Dravid and found his mojo back in the five matches against England Lions.

He has since looked his free-flowing self in the two Twenty20 matches against Australia, scoring 50 and 47, a turnaround he credited to the time he spent with Dravid.

"Fortunately, I got to play some India A games and some games where the pressure was a little less, so that I can focus on my skill and my technique," Rahul said last week.

"I spent a lot of time with Rahul Dravid, working on my game and chatting about cricket. He helped me a lot in the games I played for India A."

Rahul Dravid, a gift that keeps on giving Indian cricket

England will go into this year's World Cup as the favourites. This can be considered a remarkable change in fortunes considering their performance in the previous two World Cups in 2011 and 2015.

Since the World Cup 2015, England have won 14 bilateral series out of 20.

England's batting approach was considered traditional since the Cricket World Cup 2015, as they struggled with posting big scores on the board playing with an old fashioned approach.

But since, the appointment of Trevor Bayliss as the head coach, England went through a tremendous turn-around changing their batting approach, playing attacking cricket from the first ball of the match.

England management who has been previously guilty of choosing Test players for the ODI's and not picking up the right players for the format changed their approach and started picking up specialists for the ODI format.

Jason Roy, Alex Hales, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler are all familiar names in the ODI format and their approach to the game has benefitted the England team. These players start going after the bowlers from the first ball putting the opponent under pressure.

There have been five occasions when a team has posted more than 400 runs on the board since World Cup 2015, and out of those five, four have been posted by England.

It was in the last year that England recorded the highest ever ODI score of 481 runs against Australia at Trent Bridge.

England's bowlers Liam Plunkett, David Willey, Adil Rashid have also put in game-changing performances with the ball for the team allowing the team to prosper in all kind of pitches and conditions.

The captain Eoin Morgan who was the part of Cricket World Cup 2015 debacle in which the team suffered a loss against Bangladesh to get themselves knocked out, has seen a significant change in the team.

He along with Trevor Bayliss bought a breath of fresh air into the team by picking up specialists and allowing the team to prosper by giving them full freedom. The captain has always been seen promoting giving freedom to players to express themselves.

Morgan became the highest scorer for England in the ODI format as well.

England with this attacking approach are the prime favourites for the World Cup, but the team is also susceptible to bouncy tracks, which was evident in the last ODI of the five-match series against Windies.

The team has been prone to batting collapses, which the management knows they need to rectify before the World Cup.

In Champions trophy 2017, England suffered a heavy collapse in the semi-final against Pakistan resulting in their knockout from the tournament. They were also criticised for playing with their traditional approach in an important clash which probably cost them the match.

The World Cup will be played in England so home-pressure will pretty much be there, but the team has the best chance of winning the World Cup for the first time in their history.

England's renaissance in ODI's makes them favourites for the 2019 World Cup

Ajinkya Rahane's last one-day international appearance was over a year ago but India's test vice-captain still hopes to make the cut for the World Cup squad and has implored the selectors to give him chances "more consistently" in the 50-over format.

An industrious accumulator in a crowd of power-hitters, the 30-year-old has been ignored for the shorter formats though he is an automatic selection in the test team.

Rahane, who has a strike rate of 78.63 in ODIs, can score with proper cricketing shots but is perceived as someone who lacks the muscle power to excel as a lower-order slogger.

"As a batsman, I am aggressive but by nature, I am quite shy. I prefer to let my bat speak but sometimes it's important to speak the truth," Rahane, who is leading Mumbai in India's domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 competition, told local media.

"I have always believed the team comes first and respected the management and the selectors' decision. I will continue to do that. But in the end, it is important that your performance is recognised.

"The point is that if as a player I have always played for the team, then I deserve chances more consistently. That’s the least I am asking."

Rahane registered a player-of-the-series performance in West Indies in 2017 and also scored four consecutive fifties against Australia at home later that year.

But he was then asked to step down the batting order in South Africa in early 2018 as India went with the top three of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and captain Virat Kohli.

"I also believe that my performances were really good. If you see the last three-four series, my average was around 45 to 50," he said. "After I was dropped, I went back to domestic cricket and feel I have done reasonably well.

"I have never thought about my personal achievements. I did well as an opener against West Indies and Australia but in South Africa, the management thought I would be suitable at No. 4.

"I said 'whatever you prefer' because the team wanted it. But every individual needs confidence and positive vibes like 'yes, you are there and you are doing it for the team'."

Time is running out for the Mumbai batsman who has been left out of the squad for the five-match ODI series against Australia, the last India will play before embarking on their World Cup campaign in England and Wales.

Chief selector M.S.K. Prasad recently said Rahane was still part of India's World Cup plans and the cricketer is not giving up yet.

"It feels good that I am being considered. But at the same time, you need to get a chance," said Rahane, who has played 90 ODIs for India and has three hundreds and 24 fifties.

"Playing the World Cup is a dream every cricketer cherishes. I do respect the selectors and team management's performances and I think I deserve a chance.

"I am very much hopeful. Like I said, I keep negative thoughts away and you never know, things can change any time."

Twelve Mirage 2000 fighter jets dropped 1,000 kg bombs on the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed camps.

The airstrike comes just twelve days after the deadliest terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's three-decade of militancy, at Pulwama, in which at least 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

Following the news, Indian citizens celebrated the reply given to Pakistan for providing safe havens to terrorists.

Several big sports personalities including Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Mahesh Bhupathi, Saina Nehwal and others also took to Twitter to praise the IAF.

Sportspersons salute Indian Air Force after strike on terror camps in Pakistan

After a low-scoring thriller in the first T20 International between India and Australia at Visakhapatnam, the second and final game at the Chinnaswamy promises to be a run-feast, a KSCA official said Tuesday.

Though the wicket at Chinnaswamy has slowed down over the years, the game is expected to be a high-scoring affair unlike the series opener in which Australia chased down 127 on the final ball of the innings.

"The surface may not be as high scoring as an IPL game but will have plenty of runs. We are using a wicket which has not been used for more than two months, it was last used in Vijay Hazare Trophy," a KSCA official told PTI.

During this time of the year, dew is also not expected to be a factor.

"Around 180 should be a par score on this surface," he added.

The last T20 International was played here in February 2017 when India beat England by 75 runs after amassing 202 for six.

India all-rounder Krunal Pandya too thinks the this track will be more batting friendly.

There was a tinge of green on the surface a day before the game but in all probability, that will be shaved off by tomorrow.

"I have not seen the wicket yet but it should be a lot more batting friendly than Vizag," said Krunal.

However, Australian pacer Pat Cummins feels the pitch's nature has changed considerably over the last couple of years.

"It has been a funny wicket in the last couple of years. First time I came to Bangalore 7-8 years ago during the IPL, it was a 220-wicket. Over the years, it has slowed down.

"Vizag was low scoring but a great game. I loved the surface there. In T20s you prepare for yorkers, slower balls, but over there you knew good balls were going to be good enough. The ball felt like swinging a little bit in the end," he added.

IND vs AUS, 2nd T20I: Chinnaswamy pitch expected to be batting-friendly

India all-rounder Krunal Pandya on Tuesday insisted that the team has not lost momentum despite losing the series opener and instead taken a lot of heart from "almost defending" 126 at Vizag.

Krunal was the best spinner in the game while pacer Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly in his comeback game to take the match into the final over after a pedestrian batting performance.

"It was a great bowling effort. Everyone chipped in and we almost defended the low total. We just have to be more cautious about our batting," said Krunal ahead of the second and final T20 against Australia here on Wednesday.

"Tomorrow is a very important game as we are 0-1 down but I would not say that we have lost momentum. We lost the other night but we are not losing consecutive games. I am sure we will do well tomorrow," said the 27-year-old.

The Baroda-based cricketer has become a regular in the playing eleven in the shortest format ever since making his debut in November.

He has played 10 games, taking 11 wickets at 30.00 with best figures of 4/36 coming against Australia in Sydney. He has batted only five times in the 10 games, scoring 70 runs at 23.33.

Asked if he would like to bat higher up the order than no. 7, where he batted in the last game, Krunal said: "Honestly, I am not thinking about where I want to bat. I am just focused on what is in my hands irrespective of the situation. I want to contribute with both bat and ball."

Krunal said it would be nice to have some part-time options in the team considering India only played five specialist bowlers in Vizag.

"All the five bowlers who played are all quality bowlers. All are match winners on a given day. If you have options it is good but whatever is there we are fine with that."

Krunal also praised Australia for their effort on Sunday.

"History says they are a competitive side and we know that they will give 100 percent every time they step on the field. We are mindful of that.

"The wicket looks good here. It will be better than Vizag for sure. So we expect more runs," he said.

Krunal knows that he may not be in the team's World Cup plans and despite the focus being on finalising the squad for the 50-over mega event, he said the second T20 is a "very important game".

Earlier in the day, the Indian team had an extensive training session with skipper Virat Kohli leading from the front.

He was the first one to bat in the nets alongside Shikhar Dhawan before they switched to take throwdowns.

Mohammad Shami, Kuldeep Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who were rested for the series and have been training at the National Cricket Academy, joined their teammates briefly in the nets. Shami even had a decent bowling session.

Dhawan was rested from the first game with K L Rahul getting to open alongside Rohit Sharma but from the way the practice session went, there were no indications on what could be the opening combination on Wednesday.

1st T20I: Quick strikes hurt India, are 104/6 after 16 overs

Indian opener Rohit Sharma departed early as India were put into bat by Australia in the first T20 international on Sunday.

Rohit, who opened with KL Rahul, was dismissed mere five runs by Jason Behrendorff while trying to hit a cheeky paddle over short fine.

Earlier, Australian skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and opted to bowl.

Speaking after the toss, Finch said, " It looks like a really nice wicket and I don't think it is going to change much. Hopefully, we can chase down the total. Peter Handscomb will make his debut and he will keep wickets too. It is very exciting for him.We play India all the time these days. Short will open the innings for us."

India, which recently ended a successful tour Down Under, will aim to demolish the team once again on home soil.

Talking about their strategy for today, Indian skipper Virat Kohli said, " We would have wanted to bowl first too. It looks like a good pitch to bat on. We are not concerned about batting first. I was switched off and didn't watch much cricket during my off period. I wanted to get away from everything and refresh myself. I am ready to go now. There are people who might be potential contenders for our World Cup squad and we want to give them more game time."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has written a letter to cricket's global governing body International Cricket Council (ICC) to express concerns over the security of Indian players heading into the World Cup.

In the wake of a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama that killed over 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, there have been calls for a complete cricketing boycott against Pakistan.

The chief of Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) Vinod Rai decided against taking any stand on the match but urged the ICC and other nations to "sever ties" with countries from where "terrorism emanates".

India are scheduled to play Pakistan on June 16 during the World Cup.

The letter read:

Most countries from which the members of the ICC hail (including United Kingdom) have strongly condemned this terrorist attack and expressed solidarity with India.

It was a foregone conclusion that CoA would not take any decision on the matter as the ICC can't ban Pakistan as per rules.

It is understood that BCCI officials are also concerned that such a stand might cost them the hosting rights of the 2021 Champions Trophy and the 2023 World Cup.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli retained his top spot while teammate Chesteshwar Pujara still holds No 3 in the latest ICC Test rankings.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's Kusal Perera made a quantum leap of 58 places after he smashed an unbeaten 153 runs, in second innings, that guided his team to an improbable win against South Africa.

The left-handed batsman reached his career-best 40th position after 15 Tests.

Perera added 78 runs for the last wicket with Vishwa Fernando (six not out) to beat an 83-year record set by the Australians against Madras in February 1936.

Among the bowlers, Australian pacer Pat Cummins surpassed Kagiso Rabada to grab the top spot.

Cummins is the first from his country since Glenn McGrath's pole position in the list, back in February 2006.

Meanwhile, India's Ravindra Jadeja is placed at the fifth spot with 794 points. Jadeja also features in the all-rounders' list at the third position ahead of West Indies' Jason Holder and Shakib-Al Hasan.

Indian cricket team will leave no stone unturned to make a strong comeback after the hammering from New Zealand in the series-opener when the two teams lock horns in the second T20 International at Eden Park on Friday.

India suffered their biggest loss in T20 Internationals in terms of runs on Wednesday. The 'Men in Blue' lost the game by 80 runs after New Zealand had put up a mammoth total of 219 runs.

Opener Tim Seifert took the Indian bowlers to cleaners with a 43-ball 84 and visitors must have a plan to contain him.

Seasoned Bhuvneshwar Kumar was spared as he, alongside Hardik Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed, leaked 12 runs an over.

The team could replace Ahmed with either Siddharth Kaul or Mohammad Siraj, who warmed the bench in the first game.

The spinners, Krunal Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal, did perform but the management will also consider including chinaman Kuldeep Yadav.

The lack of fight in the run chase was a big disappointment, as mentioned by captain Rohit Sharma in Wellington. Despite having eight batsmen in the eleven, India lost by 80 runs.

"As a team, we have been good at chasing down targets which is why we play with eight batsmen. We believe that whatever the target is in front of us we can chase it down, but we just couldn't do it tonight," said a disappointed Rohit after the game.

All-rounder Vijay Shankar was promoted to number three and gave a decent performance, considering the runs other batsmen scored, with a 18-ball 27. It remains to be seen if he gets another shot at the same position or the team brings in Shubman Gill, who would be desperate to perform after the two failures in ODIs.

Meanwhile, captain Kane Williamson could not be more happy with the showing in the first T20 but wants his team to fully focus on the job at hand.

Coming back into the side after playing just one ODI against India, veteran Tim Southee proved his immense value with tidy figures of 17 runs in four over including three wickets.

The spinners, Ish Sodhi and Santner, too were on top of the Indian batsmen, sharing two wickets apiece.

Probable Squads:
India: Rohit Sharma(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Khaleel Ahmed, Shubman Gill, Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya, Mohammad Siraj.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson(c), Doug Bracewell, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Scott Kuggeleijn, Colin Munro, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Blair Tickner, James Neesham.

IND vs NZ, 2nd T20I preview: India to make strong comeback after 1st T20I loss

India's stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma on Wednesday won the toss and opted to bowl in the first T20I against New Zealand at Westpac Stadium, Wellington.

It might be for the first time when India will be playing with three wicketkeeper-batsmen. MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant have been inducted in the playing XI for the game.

India, which recently clinched the ODI series 4-1, will eye T20 series also to end the tour on a historic note.

Speaking after the toss, Rohit said, " We have had a good record chasing. Gives us another opportunity to see how well we can bat second. Looks like a good pitch, as we saw in the game earlier so we are looking to set a target. Like I said on the 5th ODI, we wanted to bat second as there was some moisture on the pitch and challenge our batsmen. We managed to get a win."

"A lot of the guys who have played ODIs have gone back. A few guys like Rishabh and Krunal are back and we need to give them some chances, so it is important to give them a chance as well in the overseas conditions and see how they fare," he added.

Meanwhile, New Zealand have not performed at par in the ODI series and may surprise the visitors today.

talking about their strategy for today, skipper Kane Williamson said, "We were looking to have a bowl, based on the wicket on the other night. It's important to assess the conditions. Mitchell makes his debut today. Some regular faces, but the two missing out are Bracewell and Neesham. A new squad brings some freshness."

"Every time you get an opportunity to represent your country is a great one this is a great opportunity against a fantastic opposition so we are looking forward to a really good series ahead, " he concluded.

1st T20I: Dhoni, Karthik and Pant in playing XI as India opt to bowl against Kiwis

India skipper Rohit Sharma Wednesday said that a line-up with eight specialist batsmen should have chased down the 220-run target set by New Zealand, however steep it might have looked for a T20 match.

India folded for 139 in 19.2 overs collapsing to their worst-ever defeat by 80 runs in the first T20 international.

"It was a tough game. We were outplayed in all three departments. We didn't start well and we knew that 200 wasn't going to be an easy chase," Rohit said after the match.

"We have chased such (big) targets in the past and that is why we played with eight batsmen. But we didn't have (even) small partnerships and that made it tougher. New Zealand though played well, they had partnerships. We need to go to Auckland, have a look at the conditions and take it from there," he added.

Outplayed 1-4 by India in the five-match ODI series, Black Caps skipper Kane Williamson was happy to finally see his team produce a "complete performance" in the first T20I.

"Fantastic performance all around, everyone rose and it was one of those complete performances that you search for. The top-order were superb and we built partnerships that helped us," Williamson said.

"But it has finished now, we move on in a day's time and we have another game. Hope we can keep the momentum through the series having set the tone."

Opening duo of Tim Seifert (84) and Colin Munro (34) shared a 86-run opening partnership to lay the foundation for New Zealand's total before the bowlers returned to complete the job.

"Seifert and Munro were outstanding. It really was a good experience for the boys. Some of the short contributions were of great importance. Daryll bowled really well and played a good cameo down the order. We had the runs on the board, but the bowling and fielding too was of high standard," Williamson said.

Seifert, who was adjudged the 'Man of the Match' for his 43-ball 84, said he was happy to live up to the expectations after his selection in the team.

"It was a great way to start the series and the boys are really happy. It feels great to go up the order. I had a look at the first two overs and then took it from there and put pressure on the bowlers," he said.

"I have been selected for a reason and it feels nice to have backed my ability," he said when asked about his big-hitting prowess.

Hope we can keep the momentum through the series having set the tone." Opening duo of Tim Seifert (84) and Colin Munro (34) shared a 86-run opening partnership to lay the foundation for New Zealand's total before the bowlers returned to complete the job. India will play New Zealand in the second T20I at Auckland's Eden Park on Friday.

IND vs NZ, 1st T20I: Seifert's 84 sets India record 220 target

Rohit Sharma-led team India would look to take that ODI winning momentum into the three-match T20 series as the homestretch of a memorable three-month tour of Australia and New Zealand appears.

India didn’t lose a series in Australia and would hope to keep that run going in New Zealand also.

Following their biggest series, 4-1, win in New Zealand, India would be eager for a first-ever T20I series win as well.

“We too are humans and our bodies need a bit of rest. Of course, we would be looking to win the series and carry the momentum back home for the Australia series,” opener Shikhar Dhawan said on the eve of the game.

Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant would make a difference especially with plenty of calls for his inclusion in the World Cup squad.

Pant was not part of the ODIs might return tomorrow and can utilise the opportunity to stake a claim for a World Cup spot.

Veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also back in the T20 format and his performance will also be keenly monitored.

India's Test sensation Shubman Gill failed to show his cricketing prowess in the ODIs. However, in Kohli's absence, he might get to bat at number three again.

New Zealand will be desperate to turn things around after a 1-4 drubbing. They do hold an upper hand over India in the shortest format. They had defeated India 2-0 in the 2008-09 in the sole bilateral series played on New Zealand soil till date.

However, they won't have the services of premier fast bowler Trent Boult, who has been rested. It will be interesting to see what rookie all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and pacer Blair Tickner do in their debut series.

Probable Squads:

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Doug Bracewell, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Scott Kuggeleijn, Colin Munro, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Blair Tickner, James Neesham.

IND vs NZ, 1st T20 preview: India look to carry ODI momentum into T20s

Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri on Tuesday compared skipper Virat Kohli to iconic former Pakistan cricket captain Imran Khan.

"The closest I have seen to the great man. Virat is in your face, he wants to dominate and has a work ethic like no one else. Whether it comes to discipline, training, sacrifice or self-denial, it is unbelievable.

"I think India is lucky to have a leader of that sort. He reminds me of Imran Khan in many ways - in the way he sets the example and sets the standards, and goes about defining it in his own way and leading from the front," Shastri said.

However, Shastri is confident that Kohli will evolve further as a captain.

"As far as I am concerned, tactically, there is still room for plenty of improvement as captain. He has gotten better and better, and better, and I thought in the Australian Test series, tactically he outsmarted Australia.

"I still see more room across formats for him to evolve. As a captain, Virat will evolve further," said Shastri.

Speaking about Indian bowlers, Shastri asserted that Kuldeep Yadav is firmly ahead of veteran Ravichandran Ashwin in the pecking order as India's frontline spinner on foreign soil.

Shastri cited Kuldeep's five-wicket haul against Australia in the Sydney Test this year.

Shastri made it clear that going forward, wrist spinners will be in vogue in Test cricket and Kuldeep is "already" ahead of Ashwin and Jadeja as country's No.1 spinner.

"Already! He plays overseas Test cricket and he gets five wickets, so he becomes our primary overseas spinner. Going ahead, if we have to play one spinner, he is the one we will pick," Shastri told the 'Cricbuzz' website.

"There is a time for everyone (referring to Ashwin's poor fitness record in 2018). But now Kuldeep is our frontline number one overseas spinner," he added.

Kuldeep bagged a five-for in the rain-affected Sydney Test and most of the Australian batsmen failed to read him.

"I was very impressed with the way Kuldeep bowled in Sydney. Even in Test cricket, it is going to be the age of wrist spin, especially in overseas Test cricket. The way he bowled in Sydney, he becomes our number one spinner in overseas Test cricket," Shastri said.

Cheteshwar Pujara was a revelation during the tour of Australia where he played a massive role in the country's first ever 2-1 series win, fetching the player of the series award for it.

However, the same Pujara was dropped for the first Test against England in Birmingham and Shastri revealed how a minor glitch in his stance was corrected, which wasn't entirely technical.

"It wasn't a technical issue. It was in his posture and the way he stood at the crease. It was a small thing, which can happen when you have played day in, and day out. I felt it was an issue," Shastri said.

"We had to factor in if we wanted to take the risk of that first Test or get him right for the next 7-8 Tests. Or, take that chance of playing in all 8 Tests and he doesn't have enough time to sort that," the coach, known for his cricketing acumen, said.

According to Shastri, the problem crept in when Pujara was playing county cricket in 2018 and it was a "conscious decision" to drop Pujara in England.

"And I will do that again if I get the results like the way I have," said the straight talking coach.

Since coming back from Australia, Pujara has played three back to back first-class games for Saurashtra, including the ongoing Ranji final in Nagpur and the coach feels it's time he takes some rest.

"...I feel like calling him from New Zealand and saying, enough Puji, take off your pads now and sit down!"

"And like I said earlier, he is the quintessential professional. That guy, when he gets in, he smells the leather. He doesn't let the bowler make him smell the leather. Chin music is different, when the bowler makes the ball go past you," he said.

And then there was an inimitable Shastri comment about how Pujara goes about his job, saying no one smells the leather in defence better than Pujara.
