The first energy pipeline between India and Bangladesh will be opened on Saturday (March 18)&nbsp;by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina via video conference.&nbsp;

This pipeline, which is expected to cost Rs 377 crore, will be the first cross-border pipeline between the two nations. The sum of the costs includes the Rs 285 crore spent on paving the section on the Bangladeshi side, reported PTI.&nbsp;

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Bangladesh&nbsp;Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the India-Bangladesh friendship pipeline on March 18 at 1700 hours (IST) via video-conference,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Friday.

“This is the first cross-border energy pipeline between India and Bangladesh, built at an estimated cost of INR 377 crore (INR 3.77 billion), of which the Bangladesh portion of the pipeline built at a cost of approximately Rs 285 crore (INR 2.85 billion), has been borne by the Government of India under grant assistance,” it said in a statement.

According to the MEA, the pipeline has the ability to move 1 million MMTPA of high-speed diesel. It would initially provide high-speed diesel to seven districts in northern Bangladesh.

“The operation of India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline will put in place a sustainable, reliable, cost-effective and environment-friendly mode of transporting HSD from India to&nbsp;Bangladesh and will further enhance cooperation in energy security between the two countries,” the MEA said.

This most recent endeavour is in keeping with India's Neighbourhood First Policy, which has been a cornerstone of its foreign policy during this time.&nbsp;

In terms of funds disbursed during the previous financial year, MEA reports that India overtook China as Bangladesh's leading partner in development cooperation. India has provided Bangladesh with concessional loans of approximately USD 10 billion, including through three of its largest bilateral lines of credit.

India's External Affairs Minister (EAM), Dr S Jaishankar, has reaffirmed India's support to Sri Lanka amid the economic crisis the country faces, stating "blood is thicker than water". India was the first country to give its approval for debt restructuring which paves way for an IMF bailout for the country.

"I can only say, it is very natural for India to step forward at this point," said EAM Jaishankar in the context of the economic challenges the country faces, explaining, that "blood is thicker than water. For us, it was natural at the moment of difficulty that we should see what we can do within our resources, within our capabilities, within our efforts, to stand by Sri Lanka in this very difficult time." The External Affairs Minister expressed his confidence in Sri Lanka's ability to overcome its current economic challenges with the help of its real friends, including India.

"I have always believed and said so both in Colombo and other places, that you will come through this challenge, but it is important to have your real friends standing by you at this time," he said. He was speaking at an exhibition on Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, marking the 75th anniversary of Indo-Lanka diplomatic relations. The exhibition, "Geoffrey Bawa: It is Essential to be There," featured over 120 documents from the Bawa archives, including a section on unbuilt work and Bawa’s own photographs from his travels.

Jaishankar went on to explain the cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka, including grants to promote Buddhist ties, heritage restoration of temples, and exchanges between the two countries. "Culture is one expression of our people-to-people exchanges," he said. The External Affairs Minister also spoke about how Indian and Sri Lankan societies have been "linked for millennia in a variety of ways, including language, faith, and customs."&nbsp;

He emphasized the importance of exhibitions like the one on Geoffrey Bawa, which promote a contemporary understanding of each other's societies and appreciation of iconic figures. "Even though we are two societies linked for a millennium in a variety of ways, such exhibitions promote a more contemporary understanding of each other's societies, and appreciation of iconic figures in our country is something that is particularly important," said Jaishankar.

Jaishankar also mentioned that Sri Lanka is an integral part of India's "neighbourhood first policy" and its "SAGAR policy." The former refers to India's focus on strengthening ties with its immediate neighbours, while the latter stands for Security And Growth for All in the Region. He highlighted that Sri Lanka is an important element of this policy due to its shared heritage and history with India.

"We are advancing, including flights between Chennai and Jaffna which have resumed, we are looking at more seamless travel between other forms between South India and Sri Lanka. For us, Sri Lanka is an essential partner in the region, and we will continue to stand by you in these difficult times", EAM Jaishankar said.

Sri Lankan High Commissioner Milinda Moragoda thanked the Indian external affairs minister for being present at the inauguration of the exhibition. He said, "it bears testimony to the strong civilization bond that unites our 2 countries. You are a true friend of India. We will not forget the unwavering support and assistance you have provided and continue to provide during some of the most challenging times we have faced in our post-independence history"

Geoffrey Bawa designed Sri Lanka's parliament and left his mark on several countries, including India. His work in India includes the Madurai Boys' Town and Club, Hotel Connemara Remodelling in Chennai, and the Hotel in Pondicherry. He also designed the Candoline Hotel in Goa, the Meena Muttiah Hospital in Chennai, the Sarabhai House in Ahmedabad, and the Poddar House in Bangalore. Amongst all of the world's nuclear powers — United States, Russia, China, India, Israel, United Kingdom, France, Pakistan, North Korea and NATO member nuclear weapons sharing states — India and China are the only two countries that maintain a 'No First Use' policy. That is, during an event of armed conflict, both New Delhi and Beijing have committed to not being the first nations to use nuclear weapons.&nbsp;

"It is possible to get a global agreement on No First Use of nuclear weapons," Harang said.

"Since India and China already have no first use policies in place. They need to be leaders now," Harang added on an optimistic note, while referring to 'many immediate threats' that the world is facing in relation to the ongoing expansion of nuclear threat.&nbsp;

<h2>Significance of Iran-Saudi deal for nuclear non-proliferation</h2>

With China at the centre of the geopolitical picture, Iran and Saudi Arabia on March 11, agreed to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/iran-saudi-arabia-restore-ties-as-china-brokered-deal-outfoxes-west-570766">restore diplomatic ties</a> after their seven years of bilateral estrangement in West Asia. Harang hailed the development as a 'great victory' for the non-proliferation movement.&nbsp;

"But we should definitely not think of this restoration of ties as a closed case. There is a wider proliferation issue in the Middle East if Iran gets into a nuclear programme," Harang cautioned, while referring to potential nuclear flashpoints in West Asia polarised on Shia-Sunni lines.

"Both Saudi Arabia and Egypt and also possibly the (United Arab) Emirates are ready to develop nuclear weapons. Either that, or enter a US nuclear umbrella in case of an Iranian nuclear bomb. That dynamic is still there," Alexander Harang added. &nbsp;

<h2>The world in crisis mode; the rules of N-game are changing</h2>

Referring to Russia's exit from Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, also known as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-to-halt-participation-in-new-start-nuclear-arms-treaty-564435">New START</a> Treaty, Harang said that the world is in "crisis mode".&nbsp;

"We are in the midst of quite many immediate threats," Harang told WION, while also emphasising on the current uproar in South Korea and past efforts by Brazil for armed nuclear self-sufficiency.

Harang believes that a global agreement on 'No First Use' by all nuclear-powered states would result in 'heightening the threshold for actually using the nuclear weapons', and will become an immediate deterrent measure against most immediate threats of a possible nuclear-armed escalation.&nbsp;

"A 'no first use' doctrine is what can cool the security apparatus down during an event of conflict. This is what can increase the strategic response time," Harang said while referring to the time a country gets during a conflict when it has to decide if it will respond to an attack with nuclear force or not.

But could a global agreement on 'no first use' be possible without the country with a reckless proliferation record coming on-board?&nbsp;

"Well, you don't start with Pakistan really?," Harang chuckled, and repeated, "You don't start with Pakistan. Not at this point."

"We are in the midst of quite many immediate threats," Harang told WION, while also emphasising on the current uproar in South Korea and past efforts by Brazil for armed nuclear self-sufficiency. Harang believes that a global agreement on 'No First Use' by all nuclear-powered states would result in 'heightening the threshold for actually using the nuclear weapons', and will become an immediate deterrent measure against most immediate threats of a possible nuclear-armed escalation. "A 'no first use' doctrine is what can cool the security apparatus down during an event of conflict. This is what can increase the strategic response time," Harang said while referring to the time a country gets during a conflict when it has to decide if it will respond to an attack with nuclear force or not. This arrangement is now applicable to 18 countries which are, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Fiji, Germany, Guyana, Israel, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Russia, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. &nbsp;

Indian importers will make payment in INR, which shall be credited into the Special Vostro account of the correspondent bank of the partner country, against the invoices for the supply of goods/services from the overseas seller/supplier. Indian exporters can be paid their export proceeds in INR from the balances in the designated Special Vostro account of the correspondent bank of the partner country.&nbsp;

The Indian high commission in Tanzania is organising a Stakeholders Consultation Meeting on 24th March 2023 where details about the bilateral trade mechanism using local currency and its benefits would be discussed. This move towards using national currencies for bilateral trade settlement is in line with the RBI’s objective of promoting the use of domestic currencies in cross-border transactions, which is expected to reduce the dependence on foreign currencies, especially the US dollar.&nbsp;

The annual production will be scaled up to 1,20,000 AC drives and more than 2,00,000 PCBs.&nbsp;

Kentaro Yamaguchi, Head, Automation at Fuji Electric told WION that the automated equipment being used in India for surface mounting (placing small electronic components) on PCBs is the most sophisticated of its class. He said that even the Japanese factories of Fuji Electric did not have such advanced machines that can perform the surface mounting in a nearly 100% automated manner and in just a few seconds of time.&nbsp;

Shivaji Waghmare, CEO, Fuji Electric India, said that they look forward to serve larger number of Indian customers with the increased capacity and also are looking at opportunities to export made-in-India hardware to South East Asia, Middle-East, Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka among others.

The company is also looking at generating a total of Rs 1500 crore in annual revenue in India by 2025. For financial year 2022-23, the officials revealed that their firm has already surpassed Rs 1,000 crore.&nbsp;

On their future plans, the company said that they would need to further expand their India operations in the next four years, if they are to surpass Rs.1500 crore in revenue. That scaling up would mean a further investment in India of Rs 400 crore or $50 million for a much larger factory.

Queried about the quality standards of their Indian-made products over the Japanese ones, Shivaji Waghmare, CEO, told WION that the quality was no different from the Japanese-made ones. "We use the same machines, same processes as in Japan and it is also setup by the Japanese teams. In fact, the machines that are in use in the latest factory in India are much more advanced than those in Japan", he added.

For financial year 2022-23, the officials revealed that their firm has already surpassed Rs 1,000 crore. On their future plans, the company said that they would need to further expand their India operations in the next four years, if they are to surpass Rs.1500 crore in revenue. Queried about the quality standards of their Indian-made products over the Japanese ones, Shivaji Waghmare, CEO, told WION that the quality was no different from the Japanese-made ones. "We use the same machines, same processes as in Japan and it is also setup by the Japanese teams. In fact, the machines that are in use in the latest factory in India are much more advanced than those in Japan", he added.
