Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for 39 days, has appealed to farmers to reach the Khanauri protest site at the Punjab-Haryana border in large numbers on Saturday to strengthen the fight seeking a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Farmers, on a warpath against the BJP-led Centre over their demands, last week called for a "Kisan Mahapanchayat" at Khanauri.
In a 70-second video message released on Friday, Dallewal said he is appealing to the people of the country, who are part of the fight for a legal guarantee on the MSP, "that they must reach Khanauri as I want to have your darshan". The farmers, under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 last year, after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.

Days after China declared to create two new counties in Xinjiang, out of which one is made up mainly of Indian territory, India on Friday (Jan 3) responded to the reports, stressing that India has never accepted the illegal Chinese occupation of Indian territory in this area.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal while addressing a weekly briefing said that the "so-called counties" fall in India's Union Territory of Ladakh.
"We have seen the announcement pertaining to the establishment of two new counties in Hotan Prefecture of China. Parts of the jurisdiction of these so-called counties fall in India's Union Territory of Ladakh," he said.

He added that the creation of these new counties will neither have a bearing on India's long-standing and consistent position regarding our sovereignty over the area nor lend legitimacy to "China's illegal and forcible occupation of the same."
Jaiswal stressed that India has lodged a "solemn protest" with the Chinese side through diplomatic channels.
On Friday, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region government announced the establishment of the two counties, naming them He'an County and Hekang County.

This comes just 10 days after the Special Representatives of both nations restarted the boundary negotiation, which had not happened for almost five years after the Galwan face-off between the troops of both the countries.
Moreover, He'an County encompasses a large part of 38,000 sq km of area India accuses China of illegally occupying in Aksai Chin.

The MEA spokesperson also spoke on the issue of China approving the world's largest dam on Brahmaputra river. While speakig to reporters in Delhi, Randhir Jaiswal tressed the need for transparency and consultation with downstream countries and urged China to ensure that the interests of downstream states of Brahmaputra are not harmed.

Jaiswal reiterated the need to consult the downstream countries as the report emerged.
"We have seen the information released by Xinhua on 25 December 2024 regarding a hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. As a lower riparian state with established user rights to the waters of the river, we have consistently expressed, through expert-level as well as diplomatic channels, our views and concerns to the Chinese side over mega projects on rivers in their territory," he said.

"The Chinese side has been urged to ensure that the interests of downstream states of the Brahmaputra are not harmed by activities in upstream areas," Jaiswal said, adding, that India will continue to monitor and take necessary measures to protect its interests.
The major hydropower project is set to be built in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo, the Tibetan name for the Brahmaputra River.
On December 26, China-based Xinhua reported that it is said to be the planet's biggest infra project, costing USD 137 billion and potentially producing three times more energy than the Three Gorges Dam.

BREAKING | Iran extends help in Nimisha Priya case: sources

New Delhi | Iran has offered to help in Nimisha Priya's case, an Indian nurse on death row in Yemen. Senior Iranian official said, "We will take up the issue of this nurse, we will do whatever we can."
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from the Southern Indian state of Kerala has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni national, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017.
The sentence has now been confirmed by the Houthi leadership in Sana’a. Nimisha Priya case is taking place in areas that are under the control of Houthis in Yemen.
Senior Iranian official, pointed, 'any thing we can do... We will not hesitate'.

The Indian government has stated it is extending all possible help to explore relevant options, although it looks like execution date has been set. Earlier this week, Ministry of external affairs said, "We are aware of the sentencing of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Ms. Priya is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter."
Nimisha Priya moved to Yemen in 2008 to work as a nurse. She later partnered with Mahdi to open a clinic due to Yemeni laws that require foreign nationals to have a local partner for business ventures. Their relationship deteriorated, with Mahdi allegedly abusing and torturing her, taking her passport, and falsely claiming they were married.

Efforts are being made to save Priya's life, including raising funds for 'blood money' which, under Yemeni law, could lead to a pardon from the victim's family. Her family and supporters are trying to negotiate with Mahdi's family for clemency, which would involve paying a significant sum of money.

The year 2024 was the warmest on record in India since 1901, with the average minimum temperature settling 0.90 degrees Celsius above the long-period average, the IMD said on Wednesday.
The annual mean temperature in 2024 was 25.75 degrees Celsius, 0.65 degrees above the long-period average.
The average maximum temperature stood at 31.25 degrees Celsius, 0.20 degrees above normal. The average minimum temperature was 20.24 degrees Celsius, 0.90 degrees above normal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
The year 2024 surpassed 2016, which recorded a mean land surface air temperature of 0.54 degrees Celsius above normal, making it the warmest year since 1901.

The average minimum temperature was the highest on record for July, August, September and October, and the second highest for February, the IMD chief said.
According to the European climate agency Copernicus, 2024 likely ended as the warmest year globally and the first with average temperatures 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial (1850-1900) levels.

"Long-term data shows most parts of the country are witnessing a rising trend in minimum temperatures, particularly in post-monsoon and winter seasons," he said.
The IMD said La Nina conditions, characterised by cooler ocean surface temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean and usually associated with colder winters in north India, were expected to develop in January but would be short-lived.

June 2023 marked the first instance of a monthly global temperature crossing the 1.5-degree threshold, a trend that persisted throughout the year, except for July 2024.
Under the Paris Agreement, a permanent breach of the 1.5-degree limit refers to sustained warming over 20-30 years.
