What is flag-lowering or Beating Retreat ceremony?

The flag-lowering or 'Beating Retreat' ceremony happens everyday two hours before sunset at the Attari-Wagah border. It is conducted by the Border Security Force of India (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers and was organised for the first time in 1959.
The ceremony is marked by colorful and dramatic military show, battle calls from both sides, followed by a parade featuring high kicks, stomps and military moves. Follwing the high-pitched nationalistic show, the iron gates between the two neighbouring countries are opened and flags of both the countries are lowered simultaneously. The flags are then folded. BSF jawan from the Indian side and Pakistan Rangers from the Pakistani side shake hands as the retreat ceremony is concluded. The gates are then closed. The ceremony symbolises brotherhood as well as rivalry between the two nations.
As per some reports, the aggresive aspect of the parade were toned down in 2010 and the two nuclear-armed neighbours decided to insert a handshake with a smile in an attempt for symbolise peace. BSF jawans and Pakistani soldiers at the border also share sweets in festivals like Diwali and Eid.
In 2019, the ceremony was cancelled when Pakistan captured Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman in the aftermath of Balakot Air Strike. In 2016 after the Uri attack, the 'Beating Retreat' ceremony was not halted but sweets were not shared at the border during festivals.
The Attari-Wagah border crossing is located on the Grand Trunk road. The Indian side lies in the Attari village of Amritsar district of Punjab. The Pakistani side is in Wagah village of Lahore district. Similar retreat ceremonies also take place at Ganda Singh Wala/Hussainiwala border crossing and Mahavir/Sadqi International Parade Ground border crossing - both in Punjab. India has announced scaling down of events in these borders as well.
Attari check post is India’s first land port and the only land route that allows trade with Pakistan. It serves as a vital conduit for trade and connectivity between the two countries.

After the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, several heroes have come forward who risked their lives to save the tourists from terrorists.
Amongst all this was Sajjad Ahmed Bhatt. A video has been making rounds on the internet, showing a man carrying an injured body, when the terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists.

Those who could sit were placed on ponies and moved to the hospital, he said.
"I was just one person whose video was taken and circulated. There were many people who were doing the same," Bhatt told Indian news media NDTV.
Notably, Pahalgam has no proper hospital and anyone injured has to be taken to the Anantnag district hospital 40 km away.

What is Indus Water Treaty?

India and Pakistan, in 1960, made a formal agreement, called the Indus Waters Treaty, to decide how water will be shared between the both countries from the Indus river. The need for a treaty for water sharing arose after Independence when control over the river became a point of potential conflict between the two nations.
India briefly stopped water flow to Pakistan in 1948. Later, Pakistan complained to the United Nations (UN) that India wasn't letting enough water through. The UN suggested getting help, which led to the World Bank stepping in to mediate. After almost nine years of negotiation, India's then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan's then President Ayub Khan finally signed the agreement in 1960.

The treaty splits the six main rivers of the Indus system between India and Pakistan:

India got control of three eastern rivers:

Ravi

Beas

Sutlej

Pakistan got control of the three western rivers:

Indus

Chenab

Jhelum

Some critics say that the treaty benefits Pakistan more, as it receives about 80 per cent of the total water flow. These rivers are vital for agriculture in Pakistan, especially in the provinces of Punjab and Sindh. Pakistan relies substantially on this water supply for irrigation, farming and potable water. Stopping the Indus water will affect Pakistan's agricultural sector and its already fragile economy. Pakistan faces massive water supply issues in a few areas and the halt of the treaty will increase these issues for Pakistan.

What Will Attract the New 1% TCS?

The following luxury items are covered under the new rule if priced above ₹10 lakh:

Luxury wristwatches

Paintings, sculptures, antiques

Collectables like coins and stamps

Premium vehicles: yachts, helicopters, rowing boats, canoes

For example, if you're purchasing a designer watch worth ₹15 lakh, you’ll now pay an additional ₹15,000 as TCS. The seller collects this and deposits it with the Income Tax Department against your PAN.

What is TCS?

Tax Collected at Source (TCS) is a mechanism where the seller collects tax from the buyer during a high-value transaction. This ensures the government gets early visibility on luxury consumption and helps widen the tax base.

How Do Buyers Claim It?

TCS paid will be reflected in your Form 26AS, which is your tax passbook. It can be claimed as credit during Income Tax Return (ITR) filing.

Part of a Larger Reform

The provision for this TCS was introduced in the Finance Act, 2024, during the Union Budget. It aligns with broader reforms aimed at simplifying TDS and TCS rules, which took effect on April 1, 2025. These reforms are designed to reduce compliance burdens for ordinary taxpayers and traders by making high-value financial transactions, such as foreign remittances, business deals, and now luxury spending, more transparent and efficient.

The government believes such targeted levies will foster a more equitable tax regime and help India align with global standards of tax surveillance and compliance.According to two official notifications issued by the CBDT—one specifying the goods and another outlining the threshold and tax rate—sellers are now required to collect 1% TCS from buyers at the time of payment. This tax will be levied on the entire transaction amount exceeding ₹10 lakh.

Business & Economy: Starting April 22, 2025, a 1% TCS will apply on luxury goods above ₹10 lakh, including items like yachts and designer handbags. This aims to enhance tax transparency and monitor high-value purchases.

Thinking of splurging on a designer handbag or a helicopter joyride? The taxman wants a piece too. In a move aimed at tightening the net around big-ticket spending, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has implemented a new rule mandating 1% Tax Collected at Source (TCS) on luxury goods priced above ₹10 lakh, effective April 22, 2025. 📢CBDT Notification Alert! ➡️New rules issued for Tax Collection at Source (TCS) on the purchase of certain goods. ✅Notification S.O. 1825(E) dated 22.04.2025 published in https://t.co/wgrnm5QBDw 🔗The Notification can be accessed at:https://t.co/6GAXN2t5RS pic.twitter.com/zoRIH6NkXd — Income Tax India (@IncomeTaxIndia) April 23, 2025 What Will Attract the New 1% TCS?
