Apple aims to make most of its iPhones sold in the United States at factories in India by the end of 2026, and is speeding up those plans to navigate potentially higher tariffs in China, its main manufacturing base, a source told Reuters.
The U.S. tech giant is holding urgent talks with contract manufacturers Foxconn and Tata to achieve that goal, the person, who declined to be named as the planning process is confidential, said on Friday.
Rising tariffs and trade tensions between the US and China are impacting Apple&rsquo;s iPhone supply chain, which is still heavily dependent on China. Apple is now planning to move the assembly of all its iPhones sold in the US to India to navigate potentially higher tariffs in China, its main manufacturing base, said a report in the Financial Times. The company still assembles most of its iPhones in China.

India's decision to suspend the 65-year-old Indus Water Treaty has sparked concerns of a looming water crisis in Pakistan. With 80% of Pakistan's cultivated land irrigated by the Indus system, the treaty holds significant importance. Diplomatic tensions escalate between India And Pakistan after the Pahalgam attack.

India-Pak row: Why the Indus Water Treaty matters for Pakistan?

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Saudi Arabia this week. The two countries have agreed to deepen their friendship and expand their defence and energy sectors.

Indian Prime Minister Meets Saudi Crown Prince

The Union government of India has decided to stop Indus River water flow to Pakistan following the termination of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty following the dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, carried out by Pakistan-based terrorists, sources said. The government now plans to increase the capacity of dams along the Indus River to enhance storage.
Jal Shakti minister CR Paatil said on Friday that India would not allow a &ldquo;single drop&rdquo; of water to flow into Pakistan as a retaliation for its alleged role in the terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, killing 26 innocent people.
&ldquo;We will ensure that not a single drop of water flows into Pakistan from India,&rdquo; CR Paatil said.

India is now free to construct dams on the river without needing any consultation with Pakistan. India&rsquo;s Water Resources Secretary Debashree Mukherjee said in a letter to Pakistani officials that sustained cross-border terrorism targeting Jammu and Kashmir impedes India&rsquo;s rights under the Indus Waters Treaty. &ldquo;The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,&rdquo; the letter read. Jal Shakti minister CR Paatil said on Friday that India would not allow a “single drop” of water to flow into Pakistan as a retaliation for its alleged role in the terrorist attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, killing 26 innocent people. “We will ensure that not a single drop of water flows into Pakistan from India,” CR Paatil said. pic.twitter.com/yJhdzdDAAb — C R Paatil (@CRPaatil) April 25, 2025 On Thursday, a day after announcing the move, the Indian government issued a formal notification implementing its decision to suspend the treaty and served it to Pakistan. Also Read | Muslims wear black armbands to Friday prayers, condemn Pahalgam attack; Owaisi blasts terrorists, Pakistan The notification stated that the Indus Waters Treaty is being held in ‘abeyance’, effectively suspending all the obligations, including meetings between Indus Commissioners, data sharing, and advance notice of new projects. India is now free to construct dams on the river without needing any consultation with Pakistan. India’s Water Resources Secretary Debashree Mukherjee said in a letter to Pakistani officials that sustained cross-border terrorism targeting Jammu and Kashmir impedes India’s rights under the Indus Waters Treaty. “The obligation to honour a treaty in good faith is fundamental to a treaty. However, what we have seen instead is sustained cross-border terrorism by Pakistan targeting the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,” the letter read. Pakistan has rejected India’s suspension of the treaty and said any measures to stop the water flow to Pakistan under the pact will be seen as an “act of war”. The treaty was signed in September 1960 after nine years of negotiations between the two countries to manage issues relating to cross-border rivers. 'My brother is Mujahideen': BIG admission by sister of Pahalgam attack terrorist after house demolition

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump-0">Donald Trump</a>'s team privately alerted Wall Street executives about a possible trade deal between India and the US, a Fox Business journalist reported, revealing some other key details.&nbsp;
This comes just a few days after US President JD Vance, during his visit to India, indicated that the US and India had finalised "terms of reference" for a potential tariff deal.&nbsp;
Vance made the big announcement the day after meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that it sets a roadmap towards a final deal between the two nations.

"We are especially excited to formally announce that America and India have officially finalised the terms of reference for the trade negotiation. I think this is a vital step towards realising President Trump's and PM Modi's vision because it sets a roadmap toward a final deal between our nations. I believe there is much that America and India can accomplish together," he said.
Fox Business Correspondent Charles Gasparino posted on X, claiming that people inside the White House are alerting Wall Street executives that they are nearing an agreement in principle on trade with India.&nbsp;
He further highlighted that if it holds, the India deal being envisioned will "include agreed upon goals, and issues that have been addressed and resolved as well as a deadline for the fully-baked trade pact."

Moreover, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also suggested that India is likely to be the first country to finalise a bilateral trade agreement with the US.&nbsp;
Bessent said that reaching a deal with Indians is much easier and has very little government subsidies.&nbsp;
"India also has fewer non-tariff trade barriers, obviously, no currency manipulation, very, very little government subsidies, so that reaching a deal with the Indians is much easier," Bessent told reporters.&nbsp;

With diplomacy taking a backseat, and aggression at the border following a horrific terror attack driving the ties, here's a look at other bilateral agreements between the two countries:
1. The Karachi Agreement (1949): This agreement established ceasa efire line in Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistan's Pashtun tribal militias crossed the border and entered the Kashmir valley in 1947. The agreement was mediated by the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan &nbsp;(UNCIP).
2. Nehru-Liaquat Pact (1950):&nbsp;This pact between then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan's PM Liaquat Ali Khan was signed to ensure the protection of minorities in both countries. It guaranteed all rights to minorities in India and Pakistan.&nbsp;
3. Tashkent Agreement (1966):&nbsp;This was signed after the Indo-Pak war of 1965 and was brokered by Soviet Union. This called for troops to return to pre-war positions, and reestablish diplomatic relations after the war. It also stated non-interference in each other's internal affairs.
4. Delhi Agreement (1973): The Delhi Agreement was a trilateral agreement signed between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and ratified only by India and Pakistan. It allowed the repatriation of prisoners of war and interned officials held in the three countries after the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
5. Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines (1974): This protocol facilitates visits by pilgrims to religious sites across the border. It covers 15 shrines in Pakistan and five in India.
6. Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack Against Nuclear Installations (1988, effective 1991): Signed in 1988 but effective from 1991, both the nations under this agreed not to attack each other's nuclear facilities and annually share lists of nuclear installations on January 1.
7.&nbsp;Agreement on Prevention of Airspace Violations (1991):&nbsp;This agreement, signed in New Delhi, set ground rules to prevent accidental airspace breaches. It forbids military aircraft from flying within 10 km of the border and bars unauthorised entry into each other&rsquo;s airspace, including over territorial waters.
8. Lahore Declaration (1999):&nbsp;This was signed between then India PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif after both neighbours had conducted nuclear tests. It called for avoiding a nuclear conflict in the future. Under this, both the countries also agreed to notify each other of ballistic missile tests in advance.
9. LoC Ceasefire Agreement (2003): In November 2003, both countries agreed to cease hostilities along the Line of Control (LoC).
10. Agreement on Pre-Notification of Ballistic Missile Tests (2005): This agreement requires each country to give the other at least three days&rsquo; notice before testing surface-to-surface ballistic missiles.&nbsp;
11. Agreement on Reducing Risk from Nuclear Accidents (2007): Effective from 2007, this agreement commits both sides to notify each other in case of a nuclear accident. The pact has been extended twice since, in 2012 and 2017.
&nbsp;12. Agreement on Consular Access (2008): India and Pakistan have an Agreement on Consular Access, signed in 2008, which facilitates access for consular officials to their citizens detained in the other country. This agreement also involves the regular exchange of lists of prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody.
<h2>What is Indus Waters Treaty and Simla Agreement?</h2>
The Simla Agreement was signed by then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistan&rsquo;s Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on July 2, 1972. The agreement was the aftermath of the 1971 war. The agreement states that the governments of India and Pakistan are &ldquo;resolved that the two countries put an end to the conflict and confrontation that have hitherto marred their relations.&rdquo; It added that the two nations will &ldquo;work for the promotion of a friendly and harmonious relationship and the establishment of durable peace in the sub-continent.&rdquo;&nbsp;According to the agreement, India and Pakistan are &ldquo;resolved to settle their differences by peaceful means through bilateral negotiations or by any other peaceful means mutually agreed upon between them.&rdquo;

India and Pakistan, in 1960, made a formal agreement, called the Indus Waters Treaty, to decide how water will be shared between the both countries from the Indus river. The need for a treaty for water sharing arose after Independence when control over the river became a point of potential conflict between the two nations.
India briefly stopped water flow to Pakistan in 1948. Later, Pakistan complained to the United Nations (UN) that India wasn't letting enough water through. The UN suggested getting help, which led to the World Bank stepping in to mediate. After almost nine years of negotiation, India's then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistan's then-President Ayub Khan finally signed the agreement in 1960. The treaty splits the six main rivers of the Indus system between India and Pakistan: Ravi,Beas, Sutlej to India and Indus, Chenab, Jhelum to Pakistan.
