The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) ordered Kotak Mahindra Bank to stop onboarding new customers through its online and mobile banking channels and from issuing fresh credit cards as well. The bank can, however, provide services to its existing customers, including its credit card customers.

As a result, Kotak Mahindra Bank's share price decreased 10.85% and closed at ₹1,643 on the BSE on Thursday (April 25).

"The Reserve Bank of India has today, in exercise of its powers under Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949, directed Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (hereinafter referred to as 'the bank') to cease and desist, with immediate effect, from (i) onboarding of new customers through its online and mobile banking channels and (ii) issuing fresh credit cards. The bank shall, however, continue to provide services to its existing customers, including its credit card customers," the RBI statement read.

According to the RBI, serious deficiencies and non compliances were found in the bank's IT inventory management, patch and change management, user access management, vendor risk management, data security, and leak prevention strategy, business continuity, and disaster recovery rigor and drill.

The RBI stated that Kotak Mahindra Bank's Core Banking System (CBS), as well as its online and digital banking channels, have experienced several outages in the last two years.

"In the past two years, the Reserve Bank has been in continuous high-level engagement with the bank on all these concerns with a view to strengthening its IT resilience, but the outcomes have been far from satisfactory. It is also observed that, of late, there has been rapid growth in the volume of the bank’s digital transactions, including transactions pertaining to credit cards, which is building further load on the IT systems," RBI said.

"The Reserve Bank, therefore, has decided to place certain business restrictions on the bank in the interest of customers and to prevent any possible prolonged outage which may seriously impact not only the bank's ability to render efficient customer service but also the financial ecosystem of digital banking and payment systems," RBI said in its statement.

Once Kotak Mahindra Banks completes an external audit with the RBI's prior consent and fixes any shortcomings found in the audit "to the satisfaction of the Reserve Bank," the restrictions will be reconsidered.

The Supreme Court, while hearing the misleading advertising against Patanjali Ayurved, asked Tuesday whether the apology the company issued in newspapers matched the scale of its full-page product advertisements.

The Supreme Court, while hearing the misleading advertising against Patanjali Ayurved, asked Tuesday whether the apology the company issued in newspapers matched the scale of its full-page product advertisements. In court, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi represented Patanjali founders Ramdev and Balkrishna, stating that they had submitted a new set of apologies. The judges questioned why the apologies weren't made sooner and why they were filed on Monday. According to Rohatgi, the apology cost ₹10 lakh and was printed in 67 newspapers. "Has the apology been published prominently? Same font and size as your earlier advertisements?," Judge Hima Kohli enquired. In response to Rohatgi's claim that the company had spent lakhs, the court remarked, "We are not bothered." The court received an appeal for a ₹1000 crore fine against the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for their action against Patanjali. "Is it a proxy plea? We suspect," the bench said. But Ramdev and Balkrishna's lawyer denied any hand in that. After Ramdev said that he will issue a more thorough apology in newspapers, the Supreme Court postponed the case for one week. Also read: You are not so innocent, Indian Supreme Court tells Patanjali in misleading ads case "Please cut out the ads and then supply it to us. Do not enlarge them and supply it to us. We want to see the actual size. This is our direction... we want to see that when you issue an ad, it does not mean we have to see it by a microscope," said Justice Kohli. Patanjali Ayurved apologised in national newspapers just hours before the Supreme Court hearing, stressing that they have the highest respect for the court and that they will not make the same mistakes again. "We tender our heartfelt apology for the mistakes committed in publishing ads and holding press conferences despite the assurances by our counsel. We are committed not to repeat this mistake," the advertisement read. This comes after a Supreme Court court slammed Patanjali founders Yoga guru Ramdev and his aide Balkrishna for the company's deceptive claims to be able to treat conditions including diabetes and hypertension. The court had dismissed Ramdev and Balkrishna's previous apologies, deeming them "not heartfelt" and "more of a lip service". At the last hearing on April 16, the two were ordered to come today and demonstrate their willingness to apologise. (With inputs from agencies)

A giant snake fossil unearthed in a mine in the state of Gujarat in western India, belongs to one of the biggest snakes ever discovered.

This giant snake, named Vasuki indicus, is estimated to have reached 15 metres in length, exceeding even a T-Rex. Scientists found 27 vertebrae, some even in their original position within the spine. They believe Vasuki resembled a large python and lacked venom.

The lignite mine where the fossil was found is located in Panandhro, in the western state of Gujarat.

Debajit Datta, a postdoctoral researcher in palaeontology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and the lead author of the study, says, “Considering its huge size, Vasuki was a slow-moving predator that would control its prey through constriction like anacondas and pythons. This snake lived in a marshy swamp near the coast at a time when global temperatures were higher than today.”

The snake could have weighed up to 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilogrammes), researchers said in the journal Scientific Reports.

The name Vasuki is given after the mythical snake king Vasuki, who is seen in coil around the neck of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva.

Remains of the snake’s backbone were discovered in 2005 by co-author Sunil Bajpai from the same institute, near Kutch, Gujarat. The researchers compared more than 20 fossil vertebrae to skeletons of living snakes to estimate the size.

“The estimated body length of Vasuki is comparable to that of Titanoboa (another huge prehistoric snake), although the vertebrae of Titanoboa are slightly larger than those of Vasuki. However, at this point, we cannot say if Vasuki was more massive or slender compared to Titanoboa,” said Sunil Bajpai.

Titanoboa, estimated at 13 metres long and weighing more than 1 tonne, lived between 58mn and 60mn years ago.

Describing Vasuki, paleontologist Debajit Datta said, "Vasuki was a majestic giant. It might have spent most days peacefully resting its head on a high porch formed by its own massive coil, or perhaps moved sluggishly through the swamp."

The mystery of Vasuki's diet remains. Given its size, it could have preyed on crocodiles. Interestingly, crocodile and turtle fossils were found alongside Vasuki's remains, along with fish and even two primitive whales – Kutchicetus and Andrewsiphius.

“Snakes are amazing creatures that often leave us stunned because of their size, agility and deadliness,” Datta said.

Amid recent controversies, the Digi Yatra Foundation said that it has complete control over the Digi Yatra application, clarifying its stance on the involvement of a former vendor.

The Digi Yatra Foundation emphasised on Wednesday (April 17) that the Digi Yatra application has always remained under its full control, despite concerns regarding a former vendor, Dataevolve Solutions, which previously provided billing account and management services.

Responding to queries regarding Dataevolve Solutions' current association with Digi Yatra, the foundation categorically stated, "There is no association of Digi Yatra with Dataevolve," it said.

The foundation clarified that while Digi Yatra initially operated on the CIC infrastructure of Niti Ayog, it later migrated to Dataevolve. "Only the billing account and management was by Dataevolve," it added.

Addressing concerns about passenger data security, CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi told PTI in an interview, "It is only in the phone (of the user) that the data is residing and it is in the control of the passenger himself or herself."

Digi Yatra, powered by Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), facilitates contactless and seamless movement of passengers at airport checkpoints. Currently, the app boasts nearly 5 million users.

Access Now, a digital rights advocacy group, highlighted concerns regarding the use of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) in Digi Yatra and said, "It remains unclear how a programme involving the use of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) without restraint at India's airports is being run by a not-for-profit entity, which is actually controlled by five Indian airports, with the Airport Authority of India having only a minor stake of 26 per cent."

To avail of Digi Yatra services, passengers must register on the app using Aadhaar-based validation and a self-image capture. Subsequently, the boarding pass is scanned, and credentials are shared with the airport.

At the airport e-gate, passengers scan their bar-coded boarding pass, and the facial recognition system validates their identity and travel documents. Once verified, passengers can proceed through the e-gate, adhering to standard security protocols before boarding their flights.

The Indian government has ordered e-commerce websites to remove Bournvita and other beverages from the 'health drink' category. In an advisory, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry clarified that the term 'health drink' is not defined under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act 2006 or its rules. This comes a year after the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) directed Bournvita to withdraw all "misleading" advertisements, packaging and labels following a bombshell video by influencer Revant Himatsingka. The influencer, who goes by the name FoodPharmer, had highlighted the high sugar content in the drink, sparking criticism of the brand and a widespread debate.

"National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, a statutory body constituted under section (3) of the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005 after its inquiry under Section 14 of CPCR Act, 2005, concluded that there is no "Health Drink defined under FSS Act 2006, Rules and regulations as submitted by FSSAI and Mondelez India Food Pvt Ltd," the commerce ministry said the notification.

FSSAI’s direction on proper categorisation

India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) on April 2 asked all e-commerce websites to ensure proper categorisation of products on their websites.

This direction came after it observed instances of certain cold drinks and beverages, such as dairy-based beverage mixes, cereal-based beverage mixes, and malt-based beverages, being sold on these websites under the category of 'health drink' or 'energy drink'.

FSSAI’s direction on proper categorisation India's Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) on April 2 asked all e-commerce websites to ensure proper categorisation of products on their websites. This direction came after it observed instances of certain cold drinks and beverages, such as dairy-based beverage mixes, cereal-based beverage mixes, and malt-based beverages, being sold on these websites under the category of 'health drink' or 'energy drink'. "Therefore, FSSAI has advised all e-commerce companies to promptly rectify this misclassification by removing or de-linking such drinks or beverages from the category of ‘health drinks/energy drinks’ on their websites and placing such products in the appropriate category as provided under the extant law," the notification said.
