Let's look at how markets opened this morning. Asian stocks rose as US economic data boosted the case for the federal reserve to start cutting interest rates this year. However, that defies a general sell-off on wall street overnight. The world's biggest stock market was hit by a pricing glitch in a session that saw equities fall and bonds rise after economic data signaled a slowdown in momentum.

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday heard the plea filed by Bibhav Kumar, an aide to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,&nbsp;challenging his arrest. Kumar&nbsp;is accused of assaulting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal.

According to ANI, Kumar also requested in his appeal that he receive "appropriate compensation" for his "illegal" incarceration.

A sessions court earlier on Monday rejected Kumar's bail request, stating that the charges against him could not be "wiped away" and that there was no "pre-meditation" on the part of the AAP MP in filing the FIR. A Delhi court noted its "bonafide requirements" and sentenced Kumar to three days of police imprisonment the next day.

The police "cannot be deprived of its right," the court said, to retrieve the cell phone he was holding at the time of Maliwal's alleged attack.

"The presence of the accused in a room where NVRs (network video recorders) are installed is not denied by him or his lawyer. To the mind of this court, the reason for remaining there for a sufficient time is obviously a question which needs to be investigated for which custodial interrogation is necessary," Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal said, as quoted by PTI.

Kumar's requests for medication and for regular visits with his advocates, his wife and daughter were approved by the court in the interim.

After Maliwal accused Kumar in a formal complaint of assaulting her on May 13 at Kejriwal's house, Kumar was taken into custody on May 18. The FIR said that Kumar repeatedly kicked her in the stomach and pelvic area after slapping her multiple times.

Sections 354, 506, 509, and 323 of the IPC, which address offences like assault or criminal force on a lady with intent to insult her modesty and criminal intimidation, are where the police filed a FIR against Kumar after receiving the complaint.

The bail plea of former JNU student leader Umar Khalid in the larger conspiracy of Delhi riots case was denied by Delhi's Karkardooma court on Tuesday. It was his second time requesting bail.&nbsp;He has been detained since September 2020 in connection with a UAPA case. Umar Khalid was accused by the Delhi Police of orchestrating protests at 23 locations in 2020 that were prearranged and resulted in riots.&nbsp;

Khalid appealed to the trial court to request release in February after withdrawing his bail petition from the Supreme Court, citing a change in circumstances and equitable treatment with other accused parties.

In his defence of Umar Khalid, senior advocate Tridip Pais had questioned the Delhi Police's submissions, asking, "Is sharing messages a criminal or terror act?"&nbsp;

He was responding to earlier submissions from the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP), who stated that Khalid was using certain connections with politicians and other people on social media to amplify his story and paint it as part of a conspiracy.

Referencing remarks from several television presenters who were constantly reading charge sheets, Pais contended that Khalid was conveying the "correct narrative" and asserted that a brutal media trial was taking place against Khalid.

According to Pais, there is no evidence of a terror case against Khalid, nor do the police possess any data supporting this claim. He drew attention to inconsistencies in the prosecution witnesses' testimony.

Pais added that the high court has given bail to several accused individuals with responsibilities who had similar charges as Khalid, including Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita, and Asif Iqbal Tanha.

More than 23 years after the complaint was registered, a Delhi court on Friday convicted Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and activist Medha Patkar in a defamation case lodged against her by VK Saxena, the incumbent lieutenant governor, saying reputation is one of the “most valuable assets” and significantly impacts one's standing in society.

Holding Patkar's statements as “defamatory per se” and “crafted to incite negative perceptions”, metropolitan magistrate Raghav Sharma convicted the activist of the offence of criminal defamation under the IPC which entails a maximum punishment of simple imprisonment of up to two years or fine or both.

Saxena had filed the case in November 2000 when he was the president of the National Council of Civil Liberties over a "defamatory" press release issued against him by Patkar.

“Reputation is one of the most valuable assets a person can possess, as it affects both personal and professional relationships and can significantly impact an individual's standing in society,” the magistrate said in his 55-page judgment.

He said Patkar's statements calling Saxena “a coward, not a patriot and alleging his involvement in hawala transactions were not only defamatory per se but also crafted to incite negative perceptions.”

Also, “the accusation that the complainant was mortgaging the people of Gujarat and their resources to foreign interests was a direct attack on his integrity and public service,” the magistrate said.

The court said Saxena's testimony, supported by two court witnesses, showed Patkar falsely associated him with activities contrary to his public stance.

It said Patkar failed to provide any evidence to counter these claims or to show that she did not intend or foresee the harm caused by her statements.

“The resulting inquiries and doubts raised among the complainant's acquaintances, as well as the shift in perception highlighted by the witnesses, underscore the significant damage to his (Saxena's) reputation,” the court said.

It said it was clear that Patkar's actions were “deliberate and malicious, aimed at tarnishing the complainant's good name, and indeed caused substantial harm to his standing and credit in the eyes of the public.”

Noting the evidence before it, the court said it has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that Patkar had published the statement knowing that it would harm Saxena's reputation.

“The accused, therefore, committed an offence punishable under Section 500 (defamation) of the IPC. She is hereby convicted of the same,” it said.

The arguments on the quantum of sentences will be heard on May 30.

In its order, the court considered three questions-whether the press note was proved to have been issued by Patkar; whether the press note made certain imputations against Saxena; and whether the accused by publishing the imputations intended to harm his reputation.

It said there was no reason to believe Patkar's "bald averments and excuses" against having issued the statement and that “the gravity and precision of the accusations” highlighted that her action was deliberate and that her “primary objective” was to undermine Saxena's credibility and integrity in public.

Patkar and Saxena have been locked in a legal tussle since 2000 after she filed a suit against him for publishing advertisements against her and the Narmada Bachao Andolan.

Saxena had also filed two cases against her for making derogatory remarks against him on a TV channel and issuing a defamatory press statement.

Almost 7,000 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) students, including around 400 students from IIT Delhi, are still unplaced as the placement season for the academic year 2023–24 comes to an end.&nbsp;

According to a Times of India report, this data, which was obtained from responses to RTI queries submitted by IIT Kanpur alumnus Dheeraj Singh, shows the increasing difficulty graduates from all 23 IIT campuses have in finding work.

The institute has asked its alumni to help these students by offering jobs, making references, or offering internship possibilities.

"On behalf of the Office of Career Services (OCS) at IIT-Delhi, we appeal to you to consider extending a helping hand to our students," the request&nbsp;adds.&nbsp;

The alumni of IIT Bombay and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) have also been contacted by these institutions for assistance.

Two months ago, BITS contacted its former students. About 250 applicants, or 10% of the graduating class at IIT Bombay, have not yet secured placements despite continuous attempts till the end of June.

BITS Group Vice-Chancellor V Ramgopal Rao blamed wider economic and technological issues for the drop in placements.&nbsp;

"Everywhere, placements are 20% to 30% lower. If some institute is saying all students have been placed, the quality of jobs leaves much to be desired," he remarked.&nbsp;

Rao said, "If two people can do the work of three people, we are already 30% down in hiring." in reference to ChatGPT and huge language models' effects on the labor market.

Dheeraj Singh's RTI data highlights that "over 7,000 IIT students are yet to be placed via campus placement this year across all the 23 IITs."

Singh said that two years ago, this unplaced figure was half that, at 3,400. In contrast to the twofold increase in unplaced students, the number of students taking part in placements has increased by 1.2 times.

According to INSACOG sources cited by news agency PTI on Tuesday, India has documented 324 instances of COVID-19 so far. Of those, 290 cases are of KP.2 and 34 cases are of KP.1, sub-variants of JN1 (a branch of the Omicron variant) that are responsible for the spike in cases in Singapore.&nbsp;

The report highlighted that there is no rise in hospitalisation or serious instances, therefore there is no need for alarm or panic. Mutations will continue to occur rapidly, as is typical of viruses such as SARS-CoV2.

According to data gathered by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), there have been 34 KP.1 cases reported from seven states and union territories, with 23 of those cases coming from West Bengal. Maharashtra has reported four KP.1 cases, Gujarat and Rajasthan have reported two, while Goa, Haryana, and Uttarakhand have reported one.

Out of all the states that have reported KP.2 cases, INSACOG has identified around 290 cases nationwide, with 148 of those cases coming from Maharashtra alone. Other states and Union territories that record KP.2 sub-variants include:

<ul>
	<li>West Bengal - 36</li>
	<li>Gujarat - 23</li>
	<li>Rajasthan - 21</li>
	<li>Uttarakhand - 16</li>
	<li>Odisha - 17</li>
	<li>Goa - 12</li>
	<li>Uttar Pradesh - 8</li>
	<li>Karnataka - 4</li>
	<li>Haryana - 3</li>
	<li>Madhya Pradesh - 1&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Delhi - 1</li>
</ul>

The report also said that hospital samples are selected in a systematic manner to detect any shift in the severity of the virus-related condition, and that INSACOG is capable of identifying the appearance of any new variant.

It is pertinent to note that Singapore is currently dealing with a new wave of COVID-19, as reported by the authorities, who counted over 25,900 cases between May 5 and May 11. Every week, the instances are almost doubling. A health alert from the government advises people to wear masks once more.

According to Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH), the estimated number of COVID-19 infections for the week of May 5–11 increased to 25,900, a 90% rise from the 13,700 cases recorded the week before.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), JN.1 and its sub-lineages, including KP.1 and KP.2, remain the most common COVID-19 variations worldwide, with KP.2 designated as a Variant Under Monitoring. Scientists have also given KP.1 and KP.2 the nickname 'FLiRT', which comes from the technical nomenclature of their mutations.

Leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Manish Sisodia, was denied bail by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday in connection with proceedings filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over the Delhi excise policy scam case.

Referencing Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma denied the bail request, stating that the prosecution had established a prima facie case of money laundering.

The Court denied Sisodia's request for bail, stating that his actions amounted to a "great betrayal of democratic principles".

The Court also found that Sisodia destroyed significant evidence, including electronic evidence. The solitary judge in question in this case referred to two allegedly broken mobile phones.

The Court also considered the fact that Sisodia was a top AAP leader, had a prominent position in the Delhi government, managed several ministries, and was an influential figure.

The court said that Sisodia was involved in the crucial destruction of electronic evidence and is an influential person as he is a powerful leader of the party. The court said that the possibility of Sisodia influencing material witnesses cannot be ruled out.

"This court is of the opinion that petitioner has not been able to make out a case for grant of bail in his favour," the judge stated.

The Bench went on to say that Sisodia utilised fraudulent methods to indicate that the Delhi excise policy had public&nbsp;support when, in fact, the policy was designed to benefit only certain people.&nbsp;

The court said that pre-drafted emails&nbsp;were sent “under the guise of public comment by various people under his direction. “Corruption in this case originated from the applicant’s desire to frame the policy. The dissemination of false information by portraying it as a form of feedback constitutes corruption,” the court added.

According to Justice Sharma, Sisodia abused his position and violated the public trust in this instance. The Court stated that neither the CBI nor the ED were responsible for the case's delay. However, the Court disagreed with the trial court's findings that all of the defendants in the case conspired to postpone the trial.

Sisodia's bail request in the CBI and ED charges against him was recently denied by the trial court, which prompted his current petition before the High Court. This is the second round of bail applications filed by Sisodia.

On March 31, 2023, Sisodia's bail request in the CBI case was refused. On April 28, 2023, the trial judge denied his bail plea&nbsp;in the ED case.

The Delhi High Court maintained the trial court's orders, which were further upheld by the Supreme Court in October 2023. However, the Supreme Court stated at the time that Sisodia could apply for bail again if the trial moved too slowly. He then filed a second set of bail pleas.

Sisodia has been in jail since February 26, 2023. He is being investigated by the CBI and the ED in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.

Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former judge of the Calcutta High Court who is contesting Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket, was prohibited from campaigning for 24 hours on Tuesday by the Election Commission (EC) for making disparaging statements against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during an election rally.

His remarks, according to the Election Commission of India, violate the Model Code of Conduct, hence the ban will be in place from Tuesday (May 21) at 50 pm until Wednesday at 5 pm. The Election Commission took action following a complaint from the Trinamool Congress on Gangopadhyay's statements made against Banerjee at a public gathering in Haldia on May 15. The poll panel's decision also came a day after Gangopadhyay, BJP candidate for Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, replied to the Election Commission's show-cause notice about his "undignified" statement directed at Banerjee. The survey panel considered the statements to be "improper, injudicious, and undignified," implying a breach of the Model Code of Conduct. What did Abhijit Gangopadhyay say? At a public assembly in Haldia on May 15, Gangopadhyay said in Bengali, "Mamata Banerjee, how much are you being sold for? Your rate is Rs10 lakh; why? Because you are having your makeup done by Keya Seth. Mamata Banerjee: is she even a woman? I keep wondering sometimes." How did BJP respond to Election Commission's 24-hour ban? In response, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya stated that the Election Commission is conducting the election to guarantee that it is free, fair, and peaceful. “The poll panel has decided after feeling that Gangopadhyay’s comment was in bad taste and has hurt people’s sentiments. But the TMC has tried to misinterpret his comments. He is a dignified person and has fought for people’s rights,” he said.

New regulations for acquiring an Indian driver's licence will be put into effect by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on June 1 of 2024. Here are the key changes in the rules beginning June 1: Individuals can now take driving exams at private driving instruction institutions rather than government RTOs beginning June 1, 2024. These institutions will be permitted to administer examinations and issue certificates of licence eligibility. The new restrictions would tighten cars emission regulations and phase out almost 900,000 government cars in an effort to cut pollution. The speeding fine continues to be between ₹1000 and ₹2000. Minors found driving will risk a ₹25,000 fine. The minor will not be able to obtain a licence until they are 25 years old, and the vehicle owner's registration card will also be cancelled. The Ministry has simplified the documentation necessary for a new licence. The specific documents required vary depending on the kind of vehicle (two-wheeler or four-wheeler). This minimises the requirement for physical examinations at RTOs. Also read: India must create 115 million jobs by 2030 to sustain economic growth, study finds Rules for private driving schools Driving schools must contain at least 1 acre of ground (2 acres for four-wheeler training). Schools must provide students with access to appropriate testing facilities. Trainers must have a high school education (or equivalent), at least 5 years of driving experience, and an understanding of biometrics and information technology systems. Light Motor Vehicles (LMV): 29 hours in 4 weeks, consisting of 21 hours of hands-on instruction and 8 hours of theory. Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV): 31 hours of practical training and 8 hours of theoretical spread over 6 weeks. These rules guarantee that new drivers receive a high-quality education and preparation at private training institutions. Application process The application procedure is mostly unchanged. You can apply online or offline at https://parivahan.gov.in/. Application fees vary based on the kind of licence. For your licence to be approved, you must visit the RTO to submit documentation and demonstrate your driving skills. (With inputs from agencies)

During an election rally in Jhansi on Saturday (May 18) Union Home Minister Amit Shah brought up the subject of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. “Their (Congress) greed for the vote bank has burgeoned to the extent that Mani Shankar Aiyar, one of their leaders has asked us not to talk about the PoK. He is saying that Pakistan has atom bombs and we should not demand our rights over the PoK. I want to tell you that this is the Narendra Modi government and we are not afraid of atom bombs. PoK belongs to India and we will take it back,” he said. What did Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar say? His remarks follow Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar's April 15 interview, in which he said that if not respected, Pakistan could use bombs against India. And if a mad person comes there, what will happen to the nation? They have an atom bomb. We also possess the atomic bomb. But if a mad person detonates our bomb at Lahore station, so within eight seconds, eight moments, its radioactivity will reach Amritsar," Aiyar said. What else did Amit Shah say during the rally? During the rally, the Union Minister asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on track to win a third term in power. He stated that PM Modi has already won 270 seats in the previous four phases and is on his way to the third century.
