It was goals by Timothy Nurse (7'), Thomas Sorsby (32), Lee Morton (34') and Nicholas Bandurak (54') that saw the home team through while India Captain Harmanpreet Singh (14', 43') scored a double to become the all-time best goal scorer in the FIH Pro League with 35 goals. Backed by a boisterous home crowd, Great Britain got off to a roaring start with a lethal attack trying to push India on the backfoot right from the word go. Though India warded off an early shot on goal, a lapse in defence allowed newcomer Timothy Nurse to score a fine goal. Nurse did well to pick up a good assist and score his first international goal, driving into the left flank and putting the ball past India's Krishan Pathak.

Though Great Britain's 7th-minute goal put India under the pump, the visitors made an aggressive comeback when Mandeep Singh earned a penalty corner. In good nick, with 11 goals so far in the League, Harmanpreet used a powerful drag-flick to find the corner of the post beating GB's goalie James Mazarelo with ease. The 14th-minute goal put India in good stead for the next quarter as they tested the hosts' defence, finding ways to create PCs. Though they created three good PC opportunities, they could not convert the chances.

Adding to the team's woes, a good referral by GB in the 28th minute denied India a lead as it was ruled that the goal came off the back stick.

With seconds left for half-time, India conceded a penalty stroke while attempting to tackle the GB attacker in the top of the D from taking a shot on goal. Guarding India's post, experienced goalie PR Sreejesh was impeccable in his effort to stop Zachary Wallace from scoring off the stroke.

But it did not take long for the home team to gain a comfortable lead in the match. Returning from the half-time break with the score at a 1-1 stalemate, GB changed gears as they produced some insatiable attacks to score back-to-back goals. It was Thomas Sorsby who scored in the 32nd minute through a PC followed by a field goal in the 34th minute by Lee Mortan, putting GB ahead by 3-1.

With under 2 minutes to go for the third hooter, India was awarded a flurry of PCs. Not letting this golden opportunity go wasted, Harmanpreet executed a perfect flick to earn India a much-needed breakthrough to narrow down the lead to 2-3. This was not only Harmanpreet's second goal of the match, but with this goal, he also became the all-time best goal scorer in Pro League with 35 goals and also retained the top spot as the leading goal scorer in this edition of the League with 13 goals.

As the contest went into the last quarter, the two teams lived up to the billing, producing some nervy moments. Only 90 seconds into the quarter, GB won a PC but experienced Sreejesh was undeterred in his effort to pad the ball away.

FIH Hockey Pro League: Hosts Great Britain defeat India 4-2, climb to top of pool table

Hockey India has today confirmed that Craig Fulton as the new Chief Coach of the Indian Men's Hockey Team. The announcement was made, ahead of the team's home matches in the FIH Hockey Pro League starting from 10th March. The 48-year-old South African, with nearly 25 years of coaching experience, will join the team at the earliest upon completing formalities.

Fulton, a true believer in leadership, has shown exemplary results in his previous roles. His rise to fame started with a stint with the Irish Men's Team as the Head Coach between 2014 to 2018 when the team qualified for the Rio Olympic Games 2016. this was the Irish team's first Olympic qualification in 100 years. This historic feat also won him the FIH Coach of the Year in 2015.

Following this, he worked as the Assistant Coach with the reigning Olympic Champions Belgium, where the Belgium team won the Gold medal in Tokyo. He was also part of the Belgian Coaching Staff when the team lifted the World title in 2018, in Bhubaneswar.

He was named Belgium Coach of the Year 2023 after coaching the Belgium club which won the Belgium League. He has also been a part of the Belgium national team's rise in world hockey, taking the team to World No 3 in 2023 from World No. 5 in 2018.

Talking about selecting Craig Arthur Fulton for the Indian Men's Hockey Team Chief Coach's role, President, Hockey India Padma Shri Dr Dilip Tirkey said, "I am very pleased to state that Hockey India has finalised Craig Fulton for the Chief Coach's role with the Indian Men's Hockey team. I have had the honour of playing against him and now I look forward to closely working with him in this new phase for the Men's Hockey team. He comes with tremendous experience in coaching and his work ethics induces confidence of raising the team's performance in world hockey. I welcome Craig to India and wish him the best."

On Friday (January 13), the Hockey World Cup 2023 edition will kick off in Bhubaneshwar-Rourkela. The tournament will commence with the group stage -- Pool A, B, C and D -- which will be followed by the crossovers, quarterfinals, semifinals and the final. The hosts got their second PC in the first quarter which was taken by captain Harmanpreet Singh. An alert Amit Rohidas converted the rebound as the host took the lead in the 13th minute.

India ended the first quarter with a 1-0 lead over the Spanish team with the hosts penetrating their opponent's box regularly.&nbsp;

Krishan Pathak replaced PR Sreejesh as India`s goalkeeper for the second quarter. The Indian defence was put under the pump by Spanish attackers as they won their first PC in the 24th minute.

However, the European side was unable to convert the opportunity at the Indian goalpost.&nbsp;Pau Cunill failed to find the target as Pathak deflected the flick from the defender.

Attacking midfielder Hardik Singh displayed fabulous stick skills to run into the box from the left side and stormed past the Spanish defenders to score a spectacular field goal, extending India's lead to 2-0.&nbsp;

Spain were on the verge of finding their first goal in the dying minutes of the second quarter but the combined defence of Surender Kumar and Pathak denied the European team the goal.

The Spanish team was unable to find the back of the Indian goal as they trailed 0-2 at the end of the third quarter. Spain had a stroke of luck at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Abhishek got a yellow card and the hosts were reduced to 10 men for the final quarter.

The Spanish side were awarded two PCs in the fourth quarter but failed to convert on both occasions as India secured a 2-0 win in their World Cup opener.

Amit Rohindas was declared the player of the match for his first goal for the hosts and his clinical performance in the match.

India secured three vital points in Group D and currently sit second on the points table. England too managed three points against Wales but were placed in the first position in the group owing to their superior goal difference. They defeated Wales 5-0 earlier in the day.

India women's hockey team captain Rani Rampal said on Friday that her team was "100 percent" confident about defeating Argentina in the Tokyo Olympic Games semifinal and win a medal, but the side conceded a number of penalty corners which led to the defeat. 
 
"I feel 100 percent we could have won the semifinal match against Argentina. We took an early lead in the match and put them under pressure. We executed everything (the) coaches told us but conceding PCs (penalty corners) cost us," Rani said on Friday.

"2021 proved to be a good year for us. We could have won a medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games. We will always feel the pain of not being able to do that, because we were so close. It was not hard to accept it at first," she said. 
 
"But we finished 12th in 2016 when we went to Rio Olympics and this time at Tokyo Olympics we finished 4th. So, it has been a big growth for women's hockey. When we returned, the Indian fans appreciated our efforts. We felt that we did something good that fans are giving us so much love and respect. This gives us confidence to do even better in future," Rani added.
