Imran Khan arrest | Blow-by-blow account of how former Pak PM was whisked away to be 'tortured'

Imran Khan, former prime minister of Pakistan, has been arrested. The former premier was arrested on Tuesday (May 9) outside Islamabad High Court. The cricketer-turned-politician has been a prominent figure in Pakistan for decades and his ascent to power has been chronicled world over. The Oxford-educated former cricketer already had immeasurable fame in Pakistan as the only captain of the country's cricket team who led it to a World Cup victory in 1992. After his foray into politics, he remained one of the notable figures whose crowing glory was winning the country's prime ministerial office.

Let's take a look at Imran Khan's political journey so far.

Imran Khan's entry into Pakistan's politics

After his retirement from Cricket, Imran Khan formed his own party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 1996. He became a vocal critic of the Pakistani regime and spoke out against the government's mismanagement and corruption.

In its first-ever electoral test in national elections in 1997, PTI won less than one per cent of votes and failed to win any seat in Pakistan's National Assembly.

In the 2002 elections, the party won one seat which was filled by Imran Khan himself.

In October 2007, Imran Khan resigned from the assembly to protest General Pervez Musharraf's candidacy in the presidential elections. Later that year, Khan was briefly imprisoned as part of a crackdown on critics of Musharraf. PTI condemned the state of emergency declared by Musharraf and boycotted the 2008 elections.

Imran Khan's political ascent

Imran Khan held a series of successful rallies that drew in thousands of people just months before the 2013 legislative elections. During a campaign rally, Imran Khan fell from a platform and injured his head and back. Hours later, he addressed his supporters in a televised speech which he gave from the hospital bed.

The elections produced PTI's highest total till that time, but the number of seats won was still not enough. He made accusations of vote rigging.

IN 2014, Imran Khan held many rallies for months to pressure the then-PM Nawaz Sharif to step down. Suspicions of corruption against Sharif were amplified when his family was named in Panama Papers. Nawaz Sharif was subsequently disqualified by the court from the prime ministerial office.

In 2018, Khan's party contested elections, raising the issues of corruption and poverty. PTI won enough seats to forge a coalition with independents. He was appointed prime minister on August 18.

Removal from office

Imran Khan faced criticism from his opponents for his close relationship with the military establishment. In 2020, Khan's political opponents formed a coalition by the name of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM). The coalition accused Imran Khan of being a puppet of the military.

In March 2022, PDM held a vote of confidence. Some important allies of PTI left its coalition. There were defections from within PTI's own ranks. The vote was held. On April 10, Imran Khan was removed as PM. He became the first PM in the history of Pakistan to be removed by a No Confidence Vote.

PTI's 'comeback' and 'assassination attempt' on Imran

Even when it was ousted from the helm, PTI registered a surprise landslide victory in Pakistan Punjab's assembly elections in July 2022. Khan attempted to ride the wave by organising rallies.

Imran Khan arrest is the red line, says PTI and urges people to take to the streets

Dramatic scenes unfolded outside Islamabad High Court on Tuesday when Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan reached there for a hearing for one of the dozens of cases pending since he was ousted from office last year.

Personnel from the country’s paramilitary forces—the Pakistan Rangers—entered the premises and took him into custody after allegedly beating lawyers and Khan's security staff. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief had traveled from Lahore to attend a hearing in a corruption case at the court.

Videos going viral on social media showed chaotic scenes outside the court as hundreds of PTI supporters clashed with security officers, who ragged Khan into their vehicle and drove him down to an undisclosed location.

Islamabad police in a statement quoting Inspector General (IG) Akbar Nasir Khan as saying that Khan had been arrested in relation to the case which alleges that the PTI chief and his wife obtained billions of rupees from a real estate firm for legalising Rs50 billion.

The statement further said that the Rangers were acting on the orders of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad Butt who issued an arrest warrant against Khan on May 1.

Khan was taken into custody under Section 9A of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999.

However, what has alarmed many is that his arrest came a day after the country’s all-powerful Army reprimanded Khan for leveling “irresponsible and baseless allegations” against a senior military officer, who is currently serving in the armed forces, and threatened to take legal action.

Pak Army’s warning a day before

Ever since Khan was ousted from power last year following a no-confidence motion in Parliament, he has been blaming the Pakistan Army, despite previously enjoying a close relationship with the country’s most powerful establishment.

On many occasions, Khan had lambasted the previous army chief Gen (Retrd) Qamar Javed Bajwa and accused him of interfering with the government’s affairs.

But the tiff reached its crescendo on Monday when the Army didn’t take Khan’s comments lightly when he accused a senior military officer of plotting his assassination.

“[The] chairman PTI has leveled highly irresponsible and baseless allegations against a serving senior military officer without any evidence,” Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director-General Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said in a statement, as Khan continues his tirade against the establishment.

“These fabricated and malicious allegations are extremely unfortunate, deplorable, and unacceptable,” the top military spokesperson said.

The ISPR DG added that politicians should refrain from making baseless allegations and warned that if such a trend were to continue, the army had the right to take legal action.

“We ask the political leader concerned to make recourse to legal avenues and stop making false allegations. The institution reserves the right to take legal course of action against patently false and malafide statements and propaganda.”

Khan’s allegations

In a video statement on Tuesday, Khan accused the country's intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Maj-Gen. Naseer of plotting his assassination.

"I can prove in (an)investigation that this man twice tried to kill me," Khan claimed and questioned Sharif in a series of tweets – are military officers above the law?

Khan has survived two assassination attempts. He was shot three times in the left leg, one of his supporters was killed and over a dozen others, including two lawmakers, were injured in the attack.

Following the country's top court's order to register the case, police registered the First Information Report (FIR) 96 hours after the attack.

Local police only named Naveed Ahmed as the main suspect, who was arrested shortly after the shooting and confessed to the attack in a video.

However, Khan was adamant about including Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, and top ISI officer Major-General Faisal Naseer names to be included in the case.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has criticised Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari after the latter visited India for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) council meet. Zardari was schooled by India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and Khan did not let go of the opportunity to remind him about the 'humiliation'.

Imran was addressing a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) rally when he attacked Zardari. Notably, starting next week, Khan and his party would hold rallies every day till May 14 in the run-up to the Punjab assembly elections.

“Pakistan is being humiliated in the world. How the Indian foreign minister’s behaviour was when Bilawal went to India is a basis for shame for all of us," said Khan.

"We ask the question, Bilawal you are touring the entire world but first tell that before going do you ask anyone that you’re spending the country’s money on a trip so what will be the benefit or loss from it?” he added.

The PTI chief questioned what was the benefit of Zardari's trip to India, especially after the kind of language used by the Indian EAM.

“We firmly believe that there can be no justification for terrorism and it must be stopped in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism," he said without naming Pakistan.

After Zardari said, "Let's not get caught up in weaponising terrorism for diplomatic point scoring", Jaishankar countered him by saying "No one was scoring diplomatic points".

"The weaponisation. It's a very interesting statement because it unconsciously reveals a mindset. What does weaponising something mean? It means that the activity is legitimate and somebody is weaponising it. So you say you are weaponising trade, you are weaponising technology. Somebody says you are weaponising terrorism, which means they think terrorism is legitimate, and that we should not weaponise it. That is normal."

"He [Zardari] came here as the Foreign Minister of an SCO Member State. That is part of multilateral diplomacy. Don't see it as anything more than that. I think that nothing from what he said or what I heard he said deserves for this to be treated more than that," added Jaishankar.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has criticised Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari after the latter visited India for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) council meet.
