<p>Following Reuters’ first story on child labour at SMART last July, as many as 10 Hyundai suppliers in Alabama have been under investigation by state or federal authorities for child labour violations, Reuters reported in December.</p>

<p>One of the plants was inspected last August and authorities found and removed several children from the factory floor, later issuing penalties to the plant operator and a third-party staffing firm who recruited them. “The use of underage labour at a supplier or any operation is unacceptable, and we are committed to making sure non-compliance never happens again,” Chang wrote in the letter. “This is a zero tolerance issue.”</p>

<p>As Reuters reported earlier, many of the underage workers who found their way into the Alabama auto parts plants were recruited by third-party staffing agencies, a process that can allow big corporations to turn a blind eye to the illegal employment of minors.</p>

<p>In the shareholder letter, Chang reiterated that Hyundai was “discouraging” suppliers from relying on such staffing agencies in the future. He wrote that staffing firms who hired children to work at Hyundai supplier plants had provided false employee documentation. In the future, however, Hyundai and its supply chain partners must do more to ensure children are never put to work in their factories, the letter said.</p>

<p>“Ultimately, the responsibility is with Hyundai to make sure all our suppliers understand and meet our high global workforce standards,” Chang wrote.</p>

<p>U.S. and Alabama law prohibit people under age 16 from working in industrial factory settings, and anyone under 18 is prohibited from working in particularly dangerous roles in automotive plants, such as driving forklifts or operating metal-cutting and stamping machines.</p>

<p>Earlier this month, 33 members of Congress urged DOL to seek strong and swift penalties against those responsible for child labour in the Hyundai supply chain.</p>

Authorities subsequently launched a child labour probe at another of Hyundai's regional supplier plants, Korean-operated SL Alabama, finding children as young as age 13.</p>

<p>In an interview before a Reuters event in Detroit on Wednesday, Munoz said Hyundai intends to "sever relations" with the two Alabama supplier plants under scrutiny for deploying underage labour "as soon as possible."</p>

<p>In addition, Munoz told Reuters he had ordered a broader investigation into Hyundai's entire network of US&nbsp;auto parts suppliers for potential labour law violations and "to ensure compliance."</p>

<p>Munoz's comments represent the Korean automotive giant's most substantive public acknowledgment to date that child labour violations may have occurred in its US&nbsp;supply chain, a network of dozens of mostly Korean-owned auto-parts plants that supply Hyundai's massive vehicle assembly plant in Montgomery, Alabama.</p>

<p>Hyundai's $1.8 billion flagship US&nbsp;assembly plant in Montgomery produced nearly half of the 738,000 vehicles the automaker sold in the United States last year, according to company figures.</p>

<p>The executive also pledged that Hyundai would push to stop relying on third party labour suppliers at its southern US&nbsp;operations.</p>

<p>As Reuters reported, migrant children from Guatemala found working at SMART Alabama, LLC and SL Alabama had been hired by recruiting or staffing firms in the region. In a statement to Reuters this week, Hyundai said it had already stopped relying on at least one labour recruiting firm that had been hiring for SMART.</p>

<p>Munoz told Reuters: "Hyundai is pushing to stop using third party labour suppliers, and oversee hiring directly."</p>

<p>Munoz did not offer further detail into how long Hyundai's probe of its US&nbsp;supply chain would take, when Hyundai or any partner plants could end their dependence on third party staffing firms for labour, or when Hyundai could end commercial relationships with two existing Alabama suppliers investigated for child labour violations by US&nbsp;authorities.</p>

<p>In a statement on Wednesday, SL Alabama said it had taken "aggressive steps to remedy the situation" as soon it learned a subcontractor had provided underage workers. It terminated its relationship with the staffing firm, took more direct control of the hiring process and hired a law firm to conduct an audit of its employment practices, it said.</p>

<p>SMART Alabama did not immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>

<p>Munoz's comments come on the same day that an investor group working with union pension funds sent a letter to Hyundai, pushing it to respond to reports of child labour at US&nbsp;parts suppliers, and warning of potential reputational damage to the Korean automaker.</p>

<p>The letter said that the use of child labour violated international standards Hyundai committed to in its Human Rights Charter and its own code of conduct for suppliers.</p>

<p>Up until last month,&nbsp;2,409 Hyundais and Kias had been reported stolen compared to just 205 at the same time last year which is an increase of 1,075 per cent.</p>

<p>The MEA said that it welcomes investments by foreign companies in various sectors, but it also expected them to refrain from making misleading comments on India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.</p>

<p>Earlier in the day, India’s foreign minister S Jaishankar received a call from South Korea's foreign minister Chung Eui-yong, where the controversial matter was discussed.</p>

<p>But the price of cargo shipping more generally has exploded in recent months due to the shock to the global chain caused by the coronavirus pandemic.</p>

<p>The commission and the two companies "have explored all possible remedies to the competition concerns raised in considerable detail", without success, said a second source for whom the rejection of the operation is "beyond doubt".&nbsp;</p>
