Last year on June 9 more than a million people took to the streets of Hong Kong opposing the extradition bill drafted by China. Today the same protestors are facing brutal police force. Watch report.

What is HK extradition bill? Hong Kong pro-democracy protests

The war of words between China and the United States has intensified with Beijing now warning of strong countermeasures against any move that damages China's interests. Watch the WION ground report from Hong Kong.

China slams US move to revoke Hong Kong status : US vs China over Hong Kong

The United Kingdom is planning to initiate a global dialogue on acknowledging and dealing with the Hong Kong-China crisis.

Protests rocked the financial hub last year over China’s now-panned extradition bill. If it had passed, the bill would have allowed criminals to be sent to mainland China from Hong Kong. However, protests became violent and the bill was scrapped.

From that, the protest evolved into a larger call for democracy in Hong Kong and commitment to “One Country, Two Systems” model which guarantees democratic freedoms to the city.

Recently, China approved a new security law which criminalises “undermining the authority” of Beijing and introduces provisions of treason and sedition, in a bid to deal with “terrorism” in the city. The city again erupted into protests on the streets, while the country recovers from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Now, seven former UK foreign secretaries have requested Boris Johnson to formally take note of the issue.

As part of the 1997 agreement, Hong Kong was returned to China on specific terms and conditions. For instance, the city enjoys a mini-constitution of its own, called the Basic Law which guarantees privileges not available in mainland China.

Legislators in the Hong Kong assembly came to blows over this controversial bill. This is the second time this month that clashes have broken out between pro-China and pro-democracy lawmakers.

Some of the pro-democracy lawmakers were forcefully removed from the chamber by security guards. The scuffle broke out in the house committee which is tasked with reviewing bills before lawmakers vote on it.

The committee chair's position has been vacant since October. Pro-democracy lawmakers have been using delaying tactics to ensure that an appointment is not made.

On Monday however, pro-China legislators unilaterally appointed an official to lead the committee. This enraged the pro-democracy camp, which considers the move to be illegal.

Some lawmakers tore up the assembly rulebook and threw it at pro-China officials. The bill is scheduled to have a second reading on May 27 in the Hong Kong legislature.

Protesters are calling for a city-wide demonstration on that day. Although Hong Kong participates as a separate entity in sporting events, they have the same national anthem as China.

Sporting fans have often booed at the Chinese national anthem inside stadiums. In response, Beijing passed a bill against insulting its national anthem.

But as per the agreement between mainland China and Hong Kong. All laws passed by the Chinese communist party will have to ratified by the hong kong legislature.

Hong Kong police have also charged 15 pro-democracy activists over their role in last year's protests. All 15 of them were arrested last summer as well. Some of them are former lawmakers.

Most of them were bailed out, but few of them used the opportunity to criticise the govt publicly in court.

Carrie Lam, the leader of Hong Kong, recently announced plans to rework the city’s education system in view of the protests that have rocked the city multiple times since 2019.

Lam, who is mostly perceived as pro-China claimed that the “liberal studies curriculum” had fuelled the protests which had become violent and demanded for more democratisation of Hong Kong.

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 infection, the numbers of which have now simmered across the city, more protests erupted demanding less interference into the city from Beijing.

Over the weekend, the city police collided with protesters. According to agencies, at least 18 people were injured. Additionally, over 200 people were arrested and journalists were pepper-sprayed.

According to Lam, the current education system is “chicken coop without a roof” promised to bring in changes.

Reportedly, she also called for the protection of students against being “poisoned” from “false and biased information”.

Carrie Lam blames education system for protests in Hong Kong, vows to reform it

China is going to prosecute a Belizean citizen for his alleged involvement in providing funds to “meddle” in Hong Kong affairs, a Chinese newspaper reported on Friday. The newspaper backed by the ruling Communist Party, said security authorities concluded their investigation against Lee Henley Hu Xiang to the Guangzhou prosecutorate. Lee will be prosecuted, the report said.

China to prosecute citizens for meddling in Hong Kong affairs

As COVID-19 has penetrated the global society, protests that were peaking last year have come to a halt.

One of the major protests that happened included Hong Kong, where face masks became a symbol of defying the authority.

However, as protests became violent and the crackdown too, the Hong Kong government invoked a British-era law to ban face masks in the city. This did not stop the protestors from donning masks and protesting further.

As China recovers from the coronavirus outbreak, experts have been advocating for compulsory mask use.

But the appeal court which invoked the law has decided to keep it in place, even during a grave health crisis.

The ban, which was introduced in October has remained in place until now, with fears of protests embedded into the government’s mind.

The court recently claimed that colonial-era could be used in the times of emergency, and to ensure public safety. It added that the ban on masks was constitutional if the gathering was unlawful. Additionally, it added that banning masks at lawful gatherings and police forcing to remove it was unconstitutional.

Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive invoked the emergency law by citing the protests as a state of “public danger”.

“The violence and damage are mostly caused by protesters wearing masks and dressed in black outfits,” the court jugdement said.

“At the same time, it is a common phenomenon that many other protesters participating in public assemblies and processions who are not involved in violence are also wearing masks and dressed in black outfits”, it added.

The judgement further deemed Lam’s action as “nothing objectionable” while adding that she was “evidently the only suitable person to make the call”.

“Total ban of facial coverings from all public demonstrations, processions and gatherings cannot pass the test of reasonable necessity even in the context of the public danger in which the [anti-mask law] is meant to address,” the judgment said.

However, the court added the powers granted to the police to physically remove masks was unconstitutional, considering they already have the power to seek the identification of suspects.

The protests that took the city by storm were pro-democracy in nature. However, in November, the high court found the use of such colonial-era legislation was unconstitutional, which stirred anger within Beijing.

As part of China’s “one country, two systems” framework, Hong Kong shall enjoy semi-autonomy from China until 2047.

So far, over 600 people in the city have been arrested due to the law, with sixty-one being charged. The maximum penalty was one year in prison or a fine of HK$25,000.

In view of the ongoing health crisis, many believe that the law should be relaxed.

Hong Kong protesters on Friday staged sit-ins in Chinese ruled city to mark the seven months of anti-government protests. The sit-ins also marked a mob attack on demonstrators which had triggered a widespread criticism for Hong Kong police.

Hundreds of protesters had gathered at two locations, Yuen Long train station, and near the border with the mainland, as they chanted slogans including "Liberate Hong Kong! Revolution of our times" and "Hong Kong independence, the only way out!".

"We will never forget what happened on July 21," news agency Reuters quoted Lily, a protester as saying.

"We shouldn’t forget to resist despite the outbreak of the Wuhan pneumonia," she said, referring to the central city in mainland China where the coronavirus outbreak originated.

The former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997 amid promises it would be granted a high degree of autonomy and eventual universal suffrage.

China's tightening grip on the city and Beijing's failure to live up to its promises have fed the unrest, in one of the biggest popular challenges to the ruling Communist Party since the return.

Tens of thousands of Hong Kongers have held various rounds of anti-government and anti-China protests which initially began against the extradition bill but transformed into pro-democracy demonstrations.

During the protests, over 7,000 protesters were arrested in seven months of unrest. Of those, 1,092 have been charged, Hong Kong police chief Chris Tang told district councillors recently.

The Yuen Long violence was one of the highest-profile attacks since protests against a now-withdrawn extradition bill escalated in June last year.

Police had come under widespread criticism at that time for not preventing the attack, and for not immediately apprehending any of the attackers when they retreated into a nearby village and were surrounded by officers.

Hong Kong is the bank's single most important market, accounting for just over half of its $12.5 billion pre-tax profits in the first half of 2019.

Until mid-December, HSBC had largely escaped direct involvement in the often violent anti-government protests that have shaken Hong Kong for more than six months even as other companies with perceived links to Beijing saw premises vandalised.

Since then, HSBC has drawn the ire of some protesters who accuse it of being complicit inaction by the authorities against activists trying to raise money to support their campaign.

HSBC strongly denies any connection.

China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong garrison carried out air and sea exercises, according to state-run CCTV.

The drills which included emergency deployment, joint force delivery and joint patrolling was posted in the military channel, reports said.

The military exercise comes even as Hong Kong has been gripped by months of violence on the streets with protesters demanding more accountability from the government. On Monday, Hong Kong police appealed for an end to violence asserting that citizens were fed up with the social unrest and longed for peace and stability.

"We appeal to the organiser and participants to remain calm and rational. Let us kick start 2020 with peace and get Hong Kong back on the right track," Hong Kong police Public Relations chief, Kwok Ka-Chuen said amid reports of renewed violence in the new year.

Reports indicate Hong is set for multiple protests in the New Year starting Tuesday in several areas including Lan Kwai Fong, Victoria Harbour and in popular shopping malls.

The police have already given permission for a pro-democracy march on January 1. Authorities said they would deploy crowd control patrols while urging citizens to be peaceful.

Police Commissioner Chris Tang said: "If you use violence, you will not get public support. We, police, will do all we can to arrest you."

The police have already arrested several hundred protesters in the past months with no indication of end to the current cycle of violence.

On Sunday, at least one thousand people took part in a rally despite the rains wearing black masks to hide their identities. On Saturday, riot police had arrested several protesters and used pepper spray to break up the gathering as clashes continued in the city.

China's army in Hong Kong carries out air, sea exercises: Report

Hong Kong police on Monday called for peaceful demonstrations as multiple protests were being planned amid the New Year festivities. Speaking at press conference, Hong Kong police Public Relations chief, Kwok Ka-Chuen said, "It's high time to put an end to violence and restore social order in Hong Kong"

"The year 2019 has almost come to an end, Hong Kong people had a bumpy year where widespread rioting pushed the city to the brink of extreme danger, Hong Kong police Public Relations chief, Kwok said, adding, "I believe most citizens are fed up with these ongoing social unrest and long for peace and stability."

"It's high time to put an end to violence and restore social order in Hong Kong. We appealed to the organiser and participants to remain calm and rational. Let us kick start 2020 with peace and get Hong Kong back on the right track, " Kwok said.

The Commission of Hong Kong police, Christ Tang also warned against the violence and said, "If you use violence, you will not get public support. We, Police, will do all we can do to arrest you."

Hong Kong will end 2019 with multiple protests planned for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day aimed at disrupting festivities and shopping in the Asian financial hub, which has seen a rise in clashes between police and protesters since Christmas.

Events dubbed "Suck the Eve" and "Shop with you" are scheduled for New Year's Eve on Tuesday around the city, including in the party district of Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong's picturesque Victoria Harbour, and popular shopping malls, according to notices circulated on social media.

A New Year's Day march on January 1, has been given police permission and will start from a large park in bustling Causeway Bay and end in the central business district, say its organisers, the Civil Human Rights Front.

The latest planned protests come after a pick up in clashes since Christmas Eve when riot police fired rounds of tear gas at thousands of protesters, many wearing masks and reindeer antlers, after scuffles in shopping malls and in a prime tourist district.

While the protests - now in their seventh month - have lessened in intensity and size in recent weeks, their frequency has held up, with marches or rallies occurring almost daily in the former British colony.

Hit by a projectile fired by Hong Kong police while covering an anti-government protest nearly two months ago, Indonesian journalist Veby Mega Indah was blinded in one eye, but that has not blotted out the traumatic flashbacks filling her mind.

Working as an associate editor for Suara, a newspaper popular with Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong, Indah, 39, had been live-streaming in the Bahasa Indonesia language on the frontlines of demonstrations.

At the time of the shooting Indah was reporting on the street protests alongside other journalists from the vantage point of a footbridge. She believes she was hit by a rubber bullet. Whatever the projectile was, it has caused the permanent loss of sight in her right eye.

"I felt like I could not bear it anymore. I thought it's going to be my end," she told Reuters.

Indah recalled hearing fellow journalists behind her shout: "We are journalists, stop shooting at us!"

The Chinese-ruled city has been roiled by more than six months of sometimes violent protests as activists call for greater democracy and an independent inquiry into police actions, among other demands.

Police, who have at times fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse demonstrators, say they have shown restraint in the face of escalating violence.

Indah and her legal representative told Reuters they have filed a legal request asking the police to name the officer involved in the incident so they can pursue a civil case, but that they have had no meaningful response so far.

Hong Kong police did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.

While Indah still feels pain, she is adjusting to life with one eye, although she is still haunted by the experience.

"When I was in the hospital, I keep waking up because some images (keep) flashing back the projectile keeps coming back and coming back to my right eye," she said, while holding back tears.

She has been unable to return to work.

Eye blinded covering Hong Kong protests, Indonesian reporter seeks justice

Recent US legislation on Xinjiang is a severe violation of international law and gross interference in China's internal affairs, the governor of the far western region said on Monday, accusing the United States of launching a smear campaign.

Tension has flared in recent weeks between China and the United States over issues such as Beijing's treatment of its Uighur Muslim minority and protesters in Hong Kong, complicating prospects for a near-term deal to end a 17-month long trade war.

Last week, the US House of Representatives passed a bill requiring a tougher response to Beijing's treatment of its Uighur Muslim minority. U.N. experts and activists say China has detained possibly 1 million Uighurs in camps in Xinjiang.

China, which has repeatedly denied any mistreatment of Uighurs, says the camps are part of an anti-terror crackdown and provide vocational training.

The counter-terrorism measures in Xinjiang are no different from anti-terrorism measures in the United States, the region's governor, Shohrat Zakir, told reporters in Beijing.

The United States has chosen to turn a blind eye to Xinjiang's social stability, and is launching a smear campaign against the region and using issues there to sow discord among ethnic groups in China, he added.

Any attempt to disable Xinjiang is doomed to fail, said Zakir, who is also deputy secretary of the Xinjiang Communist Party.

Human rights groups and former detainees have said conditions in the camps are poor, with inmates subject to psychological and physical abuse.

At Zakir's news conference in the Chinese capital, images of past violence were displayed in excerpts from an English-language documentary, "Fighting Terrorism in Xinjiang", aired on China's state broadcaster CGTN.

The Uighur bill, which was passed 407-1 in the Democratic-controlled House, requires the US president to condemn abuses against Muslims and calls for the closure of the camps in Xinjiang.

It also calls on President Donald Trump to impose sanctions for the first time on a member of China's powerful politburo, Xinjiang Communist Party Secretary Chen Quanguo.

US bill on China's Xinjiang violates international law, regional official says

Hong Kong police on Sunday said they conducted raids ahead of a major pro-democracy rally and found weapons including a pistol and ammunition, the first firearm seizure linked to the protests.

The city is bracing itself for another huge march on Sunday afternoon as protesters try to keep pressure on the city's pro-Beijing leadership as they push for greater democratic freedoms and police accountability.

Monday marks the six month anniversary of the movement which has become increasingly violent as Beijing refuses concessions.

Hours before the march was due to start, police displayed weapons they said had been found during overnight raids at eleven locations.

The display included a Glock semi-automatic pistol with 105 rounds, a samurai sword, nine extendable batons, bottles of pepper spray and knives.

Eleven people were arrested, police added.

"We believe the group planned to use the weapons to incite chaos during the march later today and impugn the police," senior superintendent Lee Kwai-Wa, from the city's organised crime bureau, told reporters.

Lee said the raids were part of an intelligence-led operation tracking a group of protesters who threw petrol bombs at a police station in the district of Mongkok on 20 October.

Hong Kong police say pistol among weapons seized ahead of protest

Thousands of black-clad protesters from all walks of life gathered in Hong Kong on Sunday under a crisp blue sky for a rally that is expected to gauge support for democracy in the financial hub which has been roiled by protests for six months.

Anti-government activists, young and old, converged in Victoria Park, the starting point of the rally in the bustling shopping district of Causeway Bay before making their way to Chater Road near the heart of the financial district.

Authorities gave the green light to Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) - organiser of largely peaceful million-strong marches in June - to hold the rally, the first time the group has been granted permission for a protest since Aug. 18.

"I will fight for freedom until I die because I am a Hong Konger," said June, a 40-year-old mother dressed in black seated on the grass in Victoria Park. "Today is about standing with Hong Kong, and the international community."

Others chanted, "Fight for Freedom, stand with Hong Kong," one of the slogans of the anti-government movement.

Police said earlier on Sunday they had arrested 11 people, aged 20 to 63 and seized weapons including army knives, firecrackers, 105 bullets and a semi-automatic pistol, the first seizure of a handgun in six months of protests.

Many demonstrators sat on the grass in Victoria Park waiting for organisers to announce the start of the march scheduled for 3 p.m. (0700 GMT) that will follow the route of similar protests, most of which started out peacefully but later descended into violence.

The protests escalated in June over a now-shelved extradition bill that would have allowed people to be sent to mainland China for trial, but have now evolved into broader calls for democracy, among other demands.

In a statement on Saturday, the government appealed for calm and said it has "learned its lesson and will humbly listen to and accept criticism."

Hong Kong's new police commissioner, Chris Tang, said his force would take a flexible approach to demonstrations, using "both the hard and soft approach."

The former British colony has been rocked by more than 900 demonstrations, processions and public meetings since June, with many ending in violent confrontations between protesters and police, who have responded at times with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Protesters have torched vehicles and buildings, hurled petrol bombs at police stations and trains, dropped debris from bridges onto traffic below and vandalised shopping malls and university campuses, raising questions about how and when the unrest can be brought to an end.

Demonstrators are angry at what they see as the China government's meddling in freedoms promised to Hong Kong when the then British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Beijing denies meddling and has condemned the unrest and blamed foreign governments, including the United States and former colonial power Britain, of interfering in the country's internal affairs.

The chairman and president of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Hong Kong were separately denied entry to the neighbouring Chinese-ruled city of Macau on Saturday after being detained by immigration officials.

The international financial hub has enjoyed relative calm since local elections on Nov. 24 delivered an overwhelming victory to pro-democracy candidates.

Nearly 6,000 people have been arrested in the protests since June, more than 30% aged between 21 and 25.

Thousands rally in Hong Kong as government appeals for calm

The Hong Kong police will use both "hard" and "soft" approaches when dealing with protests, Hong Kong's police commissioner Chris Tang told reporters in Beijing on Saturday.

The police chief spoke ahead of a potentially large pro-democracy demonstration on Sunday and following nearly six months of sometimes violent protests in Hong Kong, sparked by a now-withdrawn bill allowing extradition to Mainland China.

Tang said the police will take a "humanistic" approach to minor incidents but warned of resolute measures against more violent actions, and added that he hopes the march will be peaceful.

Hong Kong, a major financial hub, had enjoyed relative calm for the past few weeks since local elections late last month delivered an overwhelming victory to pro-democracy candidates.

Tang was appointed to his position in November. He was in Beijing for a "courtesy visit" to meet mainland officials, the Hong Kong police said in a short statement on Thursday.

He said he met with Zhang Xiaoming, the head of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, and Zhao Kezhi, China's minister of public security.

The protesters are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

China denies interfering, says it is committed to the "one country, two systems" formula put in place at that time and has blamed foreign forces for fomenting unrest.

Earlier on Saturday Tang observed a flag-raising ceremony in Tiananmen Square, according to video footage carried by Hong Kong broadcaster Cable TV.

"I am very excited to see the country's flag fly and to feel the country's greatness," he told reporters. "I would like to thank... President Xi Jinping (for his) unwavering support of the Hong Kong police strictly enforcing the law."

Hong Kong's government on Wednesday pledged HK$4 billion ($511 million) in additional relief measures to help shore up an economy battered by months of protests that have eroded business confidence in the Asian financial hub.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan announced the measures at a news conference, where he also told reporters the anti-Beijing demonstrations had hurt international investor confidence in the Chinese-ruled city.

It marks the fourth round of such stimulus after the government previously offered around HK$21 billion in economic support, particularly to help the transport, tourism and retail industries.

Hong Kong announces fresh economic support measures worth $511 million

Hong Kong police fired tear gas to disperse anti-government protesters on Sunday as thousands took to the streets of the Chinese-ruled city after a rare lull in violence.

After a week of relative calm, thousands of anti-government protesters, including many elderly residents, took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday chanting "revolution of our time" and "liberate Hong Kong."

The protest, which took place in the bustling shopping district of Tsim Tsa Tsui, came after hundreds of people had marched to the US consulate to show "gratitude" for US support for the demonstrations that have roiled the China-ruled financial hub for nearly six months.

Waving posters that read "Never forget why you started" and black flags with the logo "Revolution now", protesters marched past the city's Kowloon waterfront, home to luxury hotels and shopping malls.

There has been relative calm in Hong Kong for the past week since local elections last Sunday delivered an overwhelming victory to pro-democracy candidates.

However, activists have pledged to maintain the momentum of the movement with three marches on Sunday.

Anti-government protests have rocked the former British colony since June, at times forcing government offices, businesses, schools and even the international airport to shut.

"We had demonstrations, peaceful protests, lobbying inside the council, a lot of things we have done but they all failed," said Felix, a 25-year-old university graduate.

"There are still five demands," he said, referring to protesters' calls that include an independent inquiry into police behaviour and the implementation of universal suffrage.

Young protesters and families with children filled the nearby streets as scores of riot police patrolled the area. Protesters, some with gas masks and backpacks, headed towards Hung Hom, a district near the ruined campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The campus turned into a battleground in mid-November when protesters barricaded themselves in and faced off riot police in violent clashes of petrol bombs, water cannon and tear gas.

About 1,100 people were arrested last week, some while trying to escape.

On Friday, police withdrew from the university after collecting evidence and removing dangerous items including thousands of petrol bombs, arrows and chemicals which had been strewn around the site.

Thank you Trump

Earlier in the day hundreds of protesters waved American flags, with some donning Donald Trump logo hats and t-shirts, as they unfurled a banner depicting the US president standing astride a tank with a US flag behind him.

Another banner read "President Trump, please liberate Hong Kong."

Trump this week signed into law congressional legislation that supported protesters in the China-ruled city, despite angry objections from Beijing.

"Thank you, President Trump, for your big gift to Hong Kong and God bless America," shouted a speaker holding a microphone as he addressed a crowd at the start of the march.

In the morning, hundreds of protesters, including many families with children, marched in protest against police use of tear gas.

Carrying yellow balloons and waving banners that read "No tear gas, save our children", the protesters streamed through the city's central business district towards government headquarters on the main Hong Kong island.

"We want the police to stop using tear gas," said a woman surnamed Wong, who marched with her husband and five-year-old son.

"It's not a good way to solve the problem. The government needs to listen to people. It is ridiculous."

Police have fired around 10,000 rounds of tear gas since June, the city's Secretary for Security, John Lee, said this week.

Further protests

Sunday's marches came as a top Hong Kong official said the government was looking into setting up an independent committee to review the handling of the crisis, in which demonstrations have become increasingly violent.

The protesters in Hong Kong are angry at what they see as Chinese meddling in the freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

China denies interfering and says it is committed to the “one country, two systems” formula put in place at that time and has blamed foreign forces for fomenting unrest.

On Saturday, secondary school students and retirees joined forces to protest against what they called police brutality and unlawful arrests.

While Saturday's rallies were mostly peaceful, public broadcaster RTHK reported that police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters after a vigil outside the Prince Edward metro station. Some residents believe that some protesters were killed by police there three months ago. Police have denied that account.

Further protests are planned through the week and a big test of support for the anti-government campaign is expected on December 8 with a rally planned by Civil Human Rights Front, the group that organised million-strong marches in June.
