Cinematic Gut Punches: The best movies you’ll never want to see again

In response to soaring US tariffs, China has announced new restrictions on Hollywood film imports. This move is seen as a cultural retaliation against economic pressures from Washington. The decision could significantly impact box office revenues and further strain US-China relations in the ongoing trade dispute.

China retaliates against US tariffs by restricting Hollywood film imports

China's National Film Administration (NFA) on Thursday (April 10) announced to "immediately" restrict imports of Hollywood films in retaliation for US President Donald Trump's raging tariff war against China.
China has been importing 10 Hollywood movies annually for the last three decades, Reuters reported.
"We will follow market rules, respect the audience's choices, and moderately reduce the number of American films imported," the NFA said on its website.

The NFA said that Trump's tariffs would sour domestic demand for American cinema.
This came after Trump increased the tariffs on China to 125%, after Beijing did not roll down the escalating tariffs on the US.
However, China retaliated, saying that it won't sit back and that the threats and coercion are not the right way to deal with China.

Chris Fenton, author of "Feeding the Dragon: Inside the Trillion Dollar Dilemma Facing Hollywood, the NBA, and American Business", said the move was a “super high-profile way to make a statement of retaliation with almost zero downside for China.”
According to Variety, domestic films have outperformed Hollywood’s fare in China, with "Ne Zha 2" this year eclipsing Pixar's "Inside Out 2" to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

China is planning to ban Hollywood movies after vowing to “fight to the end” against the sweeping tariffs imposed by Donald Trump. This comes after the US president singled out the nation for additional 50 per cent levies in his recent threats.
Beijing will impose more tariffs on US agricultural products entering China and ban US movies in the country, a Chinese journalist linked to the Communist Party told BBC’s Radio 4 programme.

Last year, US films grossed $585 million in China, which is around 3.5 per cent of China's $17.71 billion box office, reported Daily Mail.
A ban on upcoming Hollywood releases, including Jurassic World: Rebirth, The Accountant 2 and the Mission Impossible sequel, could result in a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in the Chinese market.

Trump’s additional tariff threats

On Monday (Apr 7), Trump threatened to impose an additional 50 per cent tariff on China if Beijing does not back down from its recently introduced retaliatory tariffs of 34 per cent by Tuesday (Apr 8).
If the US president moves forward with his plans to impose the additional tariffs, unless China withdraws its retaliatory levies on the US, the total new duties on Chinese goods this year could rise to 104 per cent.

China has called Trump’s recent tariff threats “blackmail”, planning to ban certain US imports in response.
In a statement, the Chinese commerce ministry said that the US threats were “a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the American side's blackmailing nature,” urging the US to resolve the differences through dialogue with mutual respect.

AI is making its grand entrance into Hollywood, and it’s no longer just a script for science fiction. The once-foe of the silver screen- artificial intelligence- is now the studio’s new best friend, with its algorithms helping to create cutting-edge visual effects, alter voices, and even manipulate actors' performances.
What was once the subject of picket lines and protests during the 2023 Hollywood strikes is now being embraced as a tool to revolutionise filmmaking.

Hollywood embraces AI for movie magic

At the 2025 Oscars, AI's influence was palpable. Films like Emilia Perez and the Brutalist made waves by incorporating AI to tweak voices and refine performances, blurring the line between human creativity and machine intelligence.
AI, far from being a passing trend, is now poised to stay—it is bridging the gap between culture and commerce. The tech is being used to enhance storytelling, whether it’s generating hyper-realistic CGI or fine-tuning accents for actors, ensuring that even the smallest detail gets perfected.
Hollywood's embrace of AI reflects a seismic shift in how films are produced. Filmmakers can now create blockbuster-worthy visuals on a budget, with generative AI helping to build expansive worlds that might have once been impossible. This tech might be here to stay, as AI is proving that it can be both the artist's assistant and the industry's next big breakthrough.
While debates around copyright and creativity simmer, one thing’s clear: the future of cinema looks artificially intelligent.

(With inputs from the agencies)

Olivia Hussey, who starred as a teenage Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film "Romeo and Juliet," garnering her a Golden Globe, died Friday at age 73, her family announced.
"Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her," her family said in a statement posted to her Instagram account.
Buenos Aires-born Hussey was 15 when she and her co-lead Leonard Whiting starred in the Oscar-winning adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy.
In 2023, the two actors filed a lawsuit against the studio alleging child abuse over a controversial nude scene featuring the pair, who were minors at the time.
A judge dismissed the lawsuit later that year.
In a 2018 interview with the entertainment trade publication Variety, Hussey said Zeffirelli had shot the nude scene tastefully.
"Everyone thinks they were so young they probably didn't realize what they were doing," Hussey said.
"But we were very aware. We both came from drama schools and when you work, you take your work very seriously."
Whiting told Variety the pair had supported each other through the daunting experience.
"Olivia was very, very nervous and frightened as well, but we really were very fond of each other and we helped each other get through the whole thing," he said in 2023.
Born to an Argentine opera singer and a British legal secretary, Hussey moved with her family from Buenos Aires to London when she was seven years old.
She studied at the Italia Conti drama school and was already a working actor as a teenager when she was cast in Zeffirelli's film.
Hussey, who received a "New Star of the Year" Golden Globe for her performance, would later star in the 1974 slasher film "Black Christmas" and the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile", among other projects.
She is survived by her husband David Eisley, their three children and a grandchild.
