A report by Reuters citing&nbsp;Mohamad al-Qabisi, director of the Wahda Hospital said&nbsp;1,700 people had died in one of the city's two districts and 500 had died in the other.</p>

<p>Hichem Abu Chkiouat, minister of civil aviation and member of the emergency committee in the administration that controls the east, had earlier told the news agency, “I am not exaggerating when I say that 25% of the city has disappeared. Many, many buildings have collapsed.”</p>

<p>The statement was made after the official said that he had returned from the Derna, a coastal city of around 125,000 inhabitants and described the situation as “very disastrous”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Bodies are lying everywhere - in the sea, in the valleys, under the buildings,” Abu Chkiouat told Reuters.</p>

<p>Addressing a press conference in Geneva via video link from Tunisia, Tamer Ramadan, the head of a delegation of the IFRC said, “We can confirm from our independent sources of information that the number of missing people is hitting 10,000 so far.”&nbsp;<br />

<p>Libya has been politically split east and west with two rival administrations in charge and crumbling public services since a 2011 NATO-backed uprising.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The head of the eastern Libyan government, Osama Hamad, is not internationally recognised and operates in the eastern regions of the country that are controlled by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the&nbsp;internationally recognised Western&nbsp;government in Tripoli does not&nbsp;control eastern areas and has dispatched&nbsp;aid to Derna. Additionally, other&nbsp;countries, including the United States and Turkey&nbsp;said that they would help.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Medical aid supplies sent by&nbsp;municipalities of Tripoli and Misrata, along with donations from businessmen, arrived in Al Abraq airport, on Tuesday (Sep 12), reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The heaviest rainfall in at least 140 years has submerged streets, shopping malls and metro stations across Hong Kong and prompted officials to shut schools and ask workers to stay at home.&nbsp;Hong Kong’s observatory reported rainfall of 158.1 millimetres between 11:00 pm (local time) on Thursday and midnight on Friday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The weather bureau also issued the highest “black” rainstorm warning and recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall on Hong Kong’s main island, Kowloon and the northeastern part of the city’s New Territories since Thursday night.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A report by Reuters citing&nbsp;a television news channel said that rescue&nbsp;workers took one person to hospital who was dead on arrival, while some 83 people were said to be injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officials have also issued landslide risk warnings near the city’s mountainous terrain while streets turned into torrents and social media videos showed workers wading waist-deep in a station, as per Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The conditions were expected to last till at least Friday afternoon, said the weather bureau. They have also attributed this to the trough of low pressure associated with the remnant of Typhoon Haikui.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hong Kong leader, John Lee said he was very concerned about the severe flooding in most parts of the city and has instructed all departments to respond with “all-out efforts”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Travel and transport between Liantang Port and Wenjindu Port connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong were also suspended&nbsp;due to flood damage, said the government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All schools in Hong Kong have been suspended due to “extensive flooding,” said the officials, adding that employers have been asked to observe arrangements typically used for the strong wind signal 8, which brings the city to an effective standstill.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Macau’s weather bureau issued the lowest “yellow” rainstorm warning on Friday, with much of the gambling hub operating as usual.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chinese state media, Xinhua, said that between 5:00 pm (local time) Thursday and 6:00 am (local time) Friday, the average rainfall in Shenzhen was 202.8 mm while the maximum cumulative rainfall reached 469 mm, breaking multiple meteorological records which began over seven decades ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Officials in Shenzhen have said, “that primary and secondary schools and kindergartens across the city will suspend classes on Friday to ensure&nbsp;the citizen’s safety and property,” reported Xinhua.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shenzhen’s observatory also issued emergency warnings advising residents to stay indoors and warning downpours were abrupt and intense. According to media reports, daily rainfall in the city located in the Pearl River Delta linking Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland was expected to exceed 500 mm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The water level in the Shenzhen reservoir also reached its limit on Friday, prompting authorities to begin discharging water and warning residents downstream to stay away from the rivers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, schools in 10 districts across Guangzhou city, which is some 130 kilometres from Shenzhen, were suspended.</p>

<p>Typhoon Haikui, which was later downgraded to a tropical depression, made landfall in China’s Fujian province on Tuesday and caused nearly $700 million in economic losses before moving to Guangdong.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rainfall in the city over the next two days, while stating that Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh may experience "heavy to very heavy" rainfall in the next five days. This raises concerns about the water level in the river increasing due to the excessive rain.</p>

<p>According to PTI, a total of 25,478 individuals, along with dogs and cows, have been rescued so far, with 16 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed in flood-affected areas of Delhi. The rescue operations are ongoing, particularly on roads that have transformed into small rivers.</p>

<p>In a separate incident, authorities from the Delhi Police successfully rescued over 60 students from a blind school located in Kingsway Camp, which had been flooded. The NDRF teams also rescued several dogs and cows at an animal shelter in Mayur Vihar.</p>

<p>As a part of a huge rescue operation involving emergency service and armed forces, the bodies were recovered by divers on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"Overall in Forli, there were three victims, one in Cesena and one in Cesenatico,"&nbsp;which could be a German man previously reported missing, the official said.</p>

<p>"The city is on its knees, devastated and in pain," said Gian Luca Zattini, the mayor of Forli, a city near Bologna where three people lost their lives. "It's the end of the world."</p>

<p>Emilia Romagna, which is also known as one of the richest regions of Italy, was hit by deadly rains just a fortnight ago causing floods that killed at least two people.</p>

<p>Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said that this time, around 50 centimetres (20 inches) of rain fell within 36 hours in Forli, Cesena and Ravenna, which is around half the normal annual rainfall. He described it as a situation "with few precedents".</p>

<p>"It is still a very critical situation," he said, adding that while the rain was still falling, it was expected to lighten during the day.</p>

<p>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni&nbsp;took to Twitter and lent her support for those affected and said the government was "ready to intervene with the necessary aid".</p>

So far, at least 219 people have been killed in Malawi and Mozambique since Saturday night.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The situation is very dire…There are many casualties, either wounded, missing or dead, and the numbers will only increase in the coming days”, Guilherme Botelho, emergency project coordinator for Doctors Without Borders (MSF) told AFP. According to reports, rescue efforts in one of the hardest hit areas in Malawi is its commercial hub Blantyre and the surrounding districts witnessed severe flooding and rain damage roads and bridges have hampered rescue operations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, mudslides triggered by heavy rains have also made it difficult to get relief while many people are said to have perished and their houses were washed away in Blantyre. “It’s a challenging operation in the sense that there’s been incidents of mudslides and so people are getting stuck in those mud accumulations,” said Estere Tsoka, an emergency specialist at the United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) in Malawi, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Monday, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera declared a “state of disaster” in the country’s southern region. Meanwhile, Mozambique’s disaster institute on Tuesday confirmed that more than 20 people have died in the country after Cyclone Freddy pummelled central Mozambique.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The death toll, including in other districts that have been hit in the southern region, has risen to 99... but we expect the number to rise," Charles Kalemba, commissioner at the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, said.</p>

<p><strong>What we know so far</strong></p>

<p>Freddy continues to be one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the southern hemisphere and last week became the longest-lived tropical cyclone on record. Notably, the previous record was held by a 31-day hurricane in 1994, according to the World Meteorological Organization. This comes as the storm first developed on February 6 between Western Australia and Indonesia has now travelled for 5,500 miles (8,851 km) and is currently wreaking havoc in African nations like Malawi, Mozambique and Madagascar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, at least 27 people died in Mozambique and Madagascar when the storm lashed out in the two countries last month. One more person was killed in Mozambique when the cyclone made its second landfall over the weekend, as per local media reports.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>What is happening in Malawi?</strong></p>

<p>Malawi police spokesman Peter Kalaya also told the news agency that the aforementioned death toll in the country will likely rise in the upcoming days as the number only accounts for 11 deaths and 16 others missing in Blantyre but not the other 10 districts affected by the storm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hours later,&nbsp;Doctors Without Borders (MSF)&nbsp;country director Marion Pechayre told Reuters that&nbsp;Blantyre's&nbsp;central hospital had received around 60 bodies by early afternoon, on Monday while 200 others were being treated for injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Some missing people are feared buried in rubble,” said Kalaya to Reuters. He added, search and rescue efforts are underway in Chilobwe and Ndirande which are two of the worst affected townships in Blantyre while heavy rains continued on Monday.</p>

<p>According to local police in Malawi, 51 people were killed out of which 36 were from&nbsp;Chilobwe while several&nbsp;others missing or injured, reported the Associated Press. Additionally, the Red Cross which is also working on search and rescue, first aid and hospital evacuations in Malawi took to Twitter and said, "66 people have died in Malawi, 93 injured and 16 people are missing due to Tropical Cyclone Freddy that has affected over 2115 by Monday 13 March."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Mozambique has received over a year’s worth of rainfall in the past month or so due to Cyclone Freddy and over the weekend made its second landfall in the country after late last month. According to the French weather agency, Météo-France, the storm may move further inland and cause heavy rains in Mozambique and southern Malawi with possible rains in Zimbabwe and Zambia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology said that the cyclone was initially supposed to make landfall on late Friday but halted over the Mozambique channel. Subsequently, it intensified on Saturday and after regaining its strength made its way inland. The French weather agency had also warned about the “destructive and devastating” winds along with “dangerous seas” and heavy rains in the region which could lead to landslides.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The full extent of the damage and loss of life caused will not be known anytime soon particularly in Mozambique as parts of the country which were affected are witnessing power outages while phone signals were also cut off in some parts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We saw a lot of destroyed buildings and clinics. People's homes had their roofs torn off by the wind. Even before the cyclone hit we saw localised flooding,” said Guy Taylor from the United Nations children’s agency UNICEF in Mozambique to Reuters from Quelimane.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as the storm pummelled central Mozambique on Saturday bringing widespread destruction and flooding to the port of Quelimane. So far, at&nbsp;least six people have died in&nbsp;Quelimane which is currently said to be at the centre of this storm, reported Reuters citing authorities and local media reports, on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UN agency posted images showing the storm’s impact on “homes, schools, and other infrastructure. Flooding is widespread within the city and surrounding areas.”</p>
