Heavy rains are likely today at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, a home ministry official said on Sunday quoting an Indian Meteorological Department advisory.

Schools in Haryana to remain shut on May 7, 8

The meteorological department has warned of thunderstorm accompanied with squall at isolated places in Haryana between May 7 and 8, following which the state government decided that all government and private schools will remain closed on these two days.

State Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma today said the decision to keep schools closed on May 7 and 8 has been taken in view of the MeT Department's warning.

The weatherman has forecast thunderstorm with squall at isolated places in the state on May 7 and thunderstorm with squall and hail at some places on May 8.

In view of the warning, the Haryana Revenue and Disaster Management Department, in an advisory, has suggested safety tips be adopted in case of thunderstorms, dust storms and squall. A spokesperson of the department said there is no need to panic and people should follow the precautions, pay special attention to children and senior citizens. All departments have been directed to stay alert, he said.

At least 124 people were killed and more than 300 others were injured in five states due to dust storms, thunderstorms and lightning last week.

Rains have been reported in many areas of Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow, Kanpur, Mathura, Kannauj, Farukkhabad, Etawah and Mainpuri. While the sudden change of weather has brought down the mercury, farmers are unhappy as a major part of the wheat crop is lying in the fields.

According to the Regional Met Office, the weather will remain "by and large the same in the next 24-hours". The weatherman added that there is a low-pressure depression in some parts of the state which is leading to the rains. Some areas are also likely to be hit by a dust storm.

Power outages have also been reported owing to the strong winds blowing across many areas.&nbsp;

Wind and rain topple Taj Mahal pillar

Japan was on alert on Sunday for high winds, heavy rain and landslides as the country braces for two typhoons on course to make landfall.

Typhoon Kompasu was expected to hit northern Hokkaido island on Sunday evening, packing gusts up to 126 kilometres (80 miles) per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The storm, located in the Pacific some 100 kilometres (60 miles) southeast of Kamaishi city at 9:00 local time Sunday (0000 GMT), was already dumping heavy rain that has flooded rivers in Hokkaido.

The agency issued warnings for heavy rain, landslides and high waves in and around Hokkaido from Kompasu.

Typhoon Mindulle, located in the Pacific 170 kilometres (110 miles) west northwest of Chichijima island at 9:00 local time Sunday (0000 GMT), was heading north toward the Japanese main island of Honshu with gusts up to 126 kilometres per hour, the agency said.

Mindulle was expected to landfall in central Japan Monday morning, possibly close to Tokyo, the agency said.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Lionrock was in the Pacific south of the island of Shikoku, but was not projected to directly hit Japan, the agency said.

Sahdev Chohri, a bank employee, was killed in Uttarkashi town of the state when the car he was driving fell into a swollen Bhagirathi river after being hit by a boulder due to a landslip, said Dharasu police station in-charge Ravindra Yadav.&nbsp;The mishap occurred on Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway when Chohri was on his way from Chinyalisaur town to Uttarkashi where he used to work in Punjab National Bank, he said. 
 
It took National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) personnel four hours to recover the body from the river. 
 
A child drowned in Badhedi Rajputana village of Haridwar district after being swept away by flood waters this morning. 
 
With these incidents, the number of casualties during the current spell of rains in the state has risen to 14 since Friday.&nbsp;Two more people from Jamalpur Khurd village of Haridwar district drowned late last night. 
 
Four were killed in Tehri district last evening as their car was hit by debris falling from the hill due to a landslide triggered by heavy rains.&nbsp;One woman was killed on Saturday morning when the bus she was travelling in overturned after being hit by the overflowing waters of a swollen canal at Haldwani in Nainital district. 
 
A tree fell over a cowshed late on Saturday evening in Uttarkashi town killing one on the spot and leaving two injured of whom, one succumbed on way to the hospital.&nbsp;A car skidded off the road and fell into a gorge, killing three and leaving two others injured in Pauri district on Saturday evening.

14 killed over weekend in rain-related incidents in north India

Rescue operations were underway in India&#39;s northern&nbsp;Uttarakhand&nbsp;state today as many people were feared trapped under debris after heavy rainfall caused havoc.
According to reports, Pithoragarh and Chamoli districts were inundated after the cloudburst, causing severe problems to the people.

Large tracts of agriculture fields have been destroyed in Suva village of the Dharchula area and three bridges linking the village have been washed away.

The Chief Minister of&nbsp;Uttarakhand, Harish Rawat, said that official teams had been dispatched to carry out search and rescue operations to find those missing.

Rawat also told reporters there were reports of further bad weather from other regions in India.

&quot;We have reports of disaster from Chamoli district too. There is heavy rainfall in Bageshwar, Uttarkashi and some other areas as well,&quot; said Rawat.

Rawat announced a compensation of 200,000 Indian rupees (about $2,968) would be given to the relatives of the deceased.

Over 54 millimetres of rain was recorded here in the last 24-hours. The Thal-Munsyari road has been cut-off and dozens of vehicles remained stranded on both sides.

The Yamunotri highway, near Kharadi, has also been damaged leading to traffic being halted.

Entry of heavy vehicles was halted on the Kedarnath highway after a landslide at Gangolgaon.

All major rivers in the hilly tracts have swollen. 
 
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain at isolated places especially in Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar and Champawat districts of Uttarakhand.

The weather department has also issued a warning alert of heavy to very heavy rain at few places in Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Almora, Pauri, Haridwar, Dehradun and Tehri districts during the next 72 hours starting from today.

Keeping in view of the alert, all District Administrations have been asked to take precautionary measures.

Director of the state Meteorological&nbsp;Department Vikram Singh has said that a low pressure line between the Bay of Bengal and Punjab is triggering the rains, and the western disturbance is also moving and it will approach Afghanistan and Jammu and Kashmir in the next two to three days.
