'Do it for our children,' parents plead at U.N. climate meet

<p>Tens of thousands of protesters, primarily in Europe and Asia, hit the streets on Friday to make a fresh call for action against global warming, hoping to raise pressure on world leaders days before a <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/students-stage-global-strikes-to-pressure-un-climate-summit-265283">UN climate summit</a>.</p>

<p>Carrying signs that read "One planet, one fight" and "The sea is rising, so must we", thousands flocked to Berlin's Brandenburg Gate for the latest "Fridays for Future" protest inspired by 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg.</p>

<p>In total, about 630,000 people demonstrated across more than 500 cities in Germany, the Fridays for Future movement said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In Hamburg alone, some 30,000 mainly young people gathered and another 17,000 congregated in Munich to voice alarm at rising temperatures, police said.</p>

<p>Thunberg, meanwhile, was on a boat sailing across the Atlantic, but tweeted a photo of herself holding a sign that said "School strike for climate."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In France, climate activists focused their anger on the "Black Friday" sales bonanza with protesters blocking a distribution centre of online retail giant Amazon outside Paris and others near Lyon and Lille.</p>

<p>Protesters in Paris also formed a human chain at La Defense shopping mall that prevented people from reaching stores, to highlight the climate costs of consumerism.</p>

<p>The Dutch branch of "Fridays for Future" said demos were taking place in around 15 cities, culminating in an evening march in Amsterdam where protesters would observe a moment's silence for victims of the climate crisis.</p>

<p>Several hundred young people also took to the streets of Lisbon, where Thunberg is expected to arrive shortly before making her way to Madrid.</p>

<p>Turnout was low in the United States and Canada, with the protest taking place during the American Thanksgiving holiday weekend. A demonstration in Washington drew about 50 people, another in New York had 100.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's important to keep showing up, keep being out there and talking to people about how this is not a problem that can go away, unless we address it head-on," said 24-year-old Frank Fritz in Washington.</p>

<p>New York police arrested 23 anti-consumerism protesters who staged a sit-in outside Macy's department store.</p>

<p>In Montreal, environmental groups distributed second-hand clothing.</p>

<p>"We are trying to create an eco-responsible movement against mass consumption, so we are giving away clothes for free to encourage people to consume less," protester Germain Desloges told AFP.</p>

<p><strong>Toxic smoke</strong></p>

<p>The latest round of global climate demonstrations kicked off in bushfire-ravaged Australia, where hundreds rallied outside the Sydney offices of the Liberal party.</p>

<p>The target of their ire was Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who said earlier this month the suggestion that "individual actions of Australia" had an impact on the fires "doesn't bear up to credible scientific evidence".</p>

<p>"Our government's inaction on the climate crisis has supercharged bushfires," said school strike leader Shiann Broderick, as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/climate-protests-kick-off-in-smoke-covered-sydney-265149">Sydney</a> was once again enveloped in toxic smoke from the fires.</p>

<p>Australia, with a population of almost 25 million, has low carbon emissions compared with the planet's biggest polluters but is one of the world's leading coal exporters.</p>

<p>Protests also took place in Tokyo, where hundreds marched through the teeming Shinjuku district.</p>

<p>"I feel a sense of crisis because almost no one in Japan is interested," said 19-year-old student Mio Ishida.</p>

<p>In Delhi, about 50 school and college students marched to the environment ministry in the world's most polluted capital, carrying placards and chanting slogans demanding that the government declare a climate emergency.</p>

<p>"This is about doing something that you believe in," said 23-year-old Saumya Chowdhury. "We want the government to acknowledge this and have a conversation on this issue with people."</p>

<p>India is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gases and has 14 of the 15 most polluted cities in the world, according to a UN study.</p>

<p>Some 200 nations are meeting in the Spanish capital from Monday for talks on finalising the "rulebook" for the 2015 Paris climate treaty, which becomes operational in 2021.</p>

<p>Scientists have warned that efforts to cap warming to 1.5 Celsius are failing and that carbon emissions -- which are on the rise -- would need to fall 7.6 percent a year to meet the target.</p>

<p>Six people will be aboard "La Vagabonde" for the trip: Elayna Carausu, 26, and her partner Riley Whitelum, 35, together with their 11-month-old boy Lenny; 26-year-old professional British sailor Nikki Henderson, Greta, and her father Svante.</p>

<p>"We were kind of the only boat around the area that was willing to cross the Atlantic this time of year," said Carausu.</p>

<p>The seas are expected to be rougher on her return journey, given the season, but Greta says the prospect of harsh weather doesn't perturb her.</p>

<p>"She's a very brave, independent, strong young lady. It's inspiring and I'm honestly amazed at what she's doing," Carausu said.</p>

<p>She added that the crew has "decided to have a vegan boat for Greta, mostly."</p>

<p>Greta plans to attend the COP 25 climate summit in Madrid, which starts in just under three weeks, before heading home to Sweden.</p>

<p>"When they charged their iPhones last night, that power came from this plant," he said, pointing to the former coal-fired Keephills power plant near Edmonton that was being converted to natural gas.</p>

<p>"Albertans and Canadians are practical people," he said. "They like real-world solutions. Calling for the end of the modern industrial economy, advocating to put millions of people out of work... is not a real-world solution."</p>

<p>Alberta's energy industry is "taking bold risks, spending real money to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas and carbon emissions," he added.</p>

<p>The province's oil sands are the single largest source of CO2 emissions in Canada. The sector has been hotly criticized by environmental groups, while a flight of foreign investment and a lack of pipelines to new markets has strangled development.</p>

<p>Last month, Thunberg marched in Montreal with nearly half-a-million supporters, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. It was one of the largest rallies in Canadian history.</p>

<p>Last week’s United Nations climate summit may go down in history - but not for the reasons intended. It was not the tipping point for action on global warming that organisers hoped it would be. It will instead probably be remembered for the powerful address by Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg, who castigated world leaders on behalf of the generation set to bear the brunt of inaction.</p>

<p>Young people are not sitting back and waiting for older generations to act on the climate crisis. Days before the summit, school students led a climate strike attended by millions around the world. And at the first-ever UN youth climate summit, more than 500 young people from 60 countries, including myself, explored how to meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement.</p>

<p>This group of activists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change-makers aged between 18 and 30 showcased potential solutions and put global political leaders on notice: they must fight off the climate crisis at the scale and pace required.</p>

<p><strong>Youth voices matter</strong></p>

<p>Youth aged 15 to 24 years represent 16 per cent&nbsp;of the world population and will reach 1.3 billion people by 2030. Obviously the action (or otherwise) of today’s decision-makers on climate change and other environmental threats will affect generations to come - a principle known as intergenerational equity.</p>

<p>Millions of young people around the world are already affected by climate change. Speaking at the youth summit, Fijian climate action advocate Komal Kumar said her nation was at the frontline of a crisis and worldwide, young people were “living in constant fear and climate anxiety … fearing the future”.</p>

<p>“Stop hindering the work [towards a sustainable future] for short term profits. Engage young people in the design of adaptation plans,” she said. “We will hold you accountable. And if you do not remember, we will mobilise to vote you out.”</p>

<p>UN Secretary-General António Guterres attended the event and his deputy Amina Mohammed took part in a “town hall” with the attendees, alongside senior representatives from government and civil society.</p>

<p><strong>Young people are not sitting idly by</strong></p>

<p>Technological solutions presented by youth summit participants included 3D printing using plastic waste, data storage in plant DNA, a weather app for farmers and an accountability platform for sustainable fashion.</p>

<p>Participants learnt how to amplify their voices using Instagram and how to create engaging videos with their mobile phones. An art workshop taught youth how creativity can help solve the climate emergency, and a networking session showed ways that youth leaders to stay connected and support each other.</p>

<p>Elsewhere, you don’t have to look far to see examples of young climate warriors, including in the developing world.</p>

<p>Programmes funded by the UN development program include in Kazakhstan where youth are helping implement an energy efficiency project in schools, and in Namibia where young people are being trained as tour guides in national parks and nature reserves. In Nepal, young people cultivate wild Himalayan cherry trees as a natural solution to land degradation.</p>

<p><strong>Harness the power of nature</strong><br />
<br />
Kenyan environmental activist Wanjuhi Njoroge told the youth summit of her nation’s progress in restoring the country’s forest cover.</p>

<p>Nature-based solutions to the climate crisis - such as conserving and restoring forests, grasslands and wetlands - were a key focus at the summit. Efforts to meet the Paris climate goals often focus on cutting fossil fuel use. But nature has a huge ability to store carbon as plants grow. Avoiding deforestation keeps this carbon from entering the atmosphere.</p>

<p>Thunberg and British writer George Monbiot released a film ahead on the New York summit calling on world leaders protect, restore and fund natural climate solutions.</p>

<p>To date, such solutions have received little by way of investments and funding support. For example in 2015, agriculture, forestry and land-use received just 3 per cent of global climate change finance.</p>

<p>Appearing at the youth summit, the global Youth4Nature network told how it mobilises young people to advocate for nature-based solutions. Their strategy has included collecting and sharing youth stories in natural resources management in more than 35 countries.</p>

<p><strong>Youth ‘will be watching’ their leaders</strong></p>

<p>When it comes to climate change, young people have specific demands that must be acknowledged - and offer solutions that other generations cannot.</p>

<p>But globally there is a lack of youth representation in politics, and by extension, they are largely absent from climate change decision-making.</p>

<p>Some youth summit participants reportedly questioned whether it achieved its aims - including the value of some workshops, why celebrities were involved and whether anything tangible was produced.</p>

<p>Certainly, there was little evidence that world leaders at the climate summit were listening to the demands of young people. This was reflected in the failure of the world’s biggest-polluting countries to offer credible emissions reduction commitments.</p>

<p>But the youth summit went some way to granting young people space and visibility in the formal decision-making process.</p>

<p>Pressure from young people for climate action will not subside. Thunberg said it best when she warned world leaders that youth “will be watching you”.</p>

<p>“The eyes of all future generations are upon you,” she said. “If you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you”.</p>

Young people are not sitting back and waiting for older generations to act on the climate crisis. Days before the summit, school students led a climate strike attended by millions around the world. And at the first-ever UN youth climate summit, more than 500 young people from 60 countries, including myself, explored how to meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement. This group of activists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change-makers aged between 18 and 30 showcased potential solutions and put global political leaders on notice: they must fight off the climate crisis at the scale and pace required. Youth voices matter Youth aged 15 to 24 years represent 16 per cent of the world population and will reach 1.3 billion people by 2030. Obviously the action (or otherwise) of today’s decision-makers on climate change and other environmental threats will affect generations to come - a principle known as intergenerational equity. Millions of young people around the world are already affected by climate change. Speaking at the youth summit, Fijian climate action advocate Komal Kumar said her nation was at the frontline of a crisis and worldwide, young people were “living in constant fear and climate anxiety … fearing the future”. “Stop hindering the work [towards a sustainable future] for short term profits. Engage young people in the design of adaptation plans,” she said. “We will hold you accountable. And if you do not remember, we will mobilise to vote you out.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres attended the event and his deputy Amina Mohammed took part in a “town hall” with the attendees, alongside senior representatives from government and civil society. Young people are not sitting idly by Technological solutions presented by youth summit participants included 3D printing using plastic waste, data storage in plant DNA, a weather app for farmers and an accountability platform for sustainable fashion. Participants learnt how to amplify their voices using Instagram and how to create engaging videos with their mobile phones. An art workshop taught youth how creativity can help solve the climate emergency, and a networking session showed ways that youth leaders to stay connected and support each other. Elsewhere, you don’t have to look far to see examples of young climate warriors, including in the developing world. Programmes funded by the UN development program include in Kazakhstan where youth are helping implement an energy efficiency project in schools, and in Namibia where young people are being trained as tour guides in national parks and nature reserves. In Nepal, young people cultivate wild Himalayan cherry trees as a natural solution to land degradation. Harness the power of nature Kenyan environmental activist Wanjuhi Njoroge told the youth summit of her nation’s progress in restoring the country’s forest cover. Nature-based solutions to the climate crisis - such as conserving and restoring forests, grasslands and wetlands - were a key focus at the summit. Efforts to meet the Paris climate goals often focus on cutting fossil fuel use. But nature has a huge ability to store carbon as plants grow. Avoiding deforestation keeps this carbon from entering the atmosphere. Thunberg and British writer George Monbiot released a film ahead on the New York summit calling on world leaders protect, restore and fund natural climate solutions. To date, such solutions have received little by way of investments and funding support. For example in 2015, agriculture, forestry and land-use received just 3 per cent of global climate change finance. Appearing at the youth summit, the global Youth4Nature network told how it mobilises young people to advocate for nature-based solutions. Their strategy has included collecting and sharing youth stories in natural resources management in more than 35 countries. Youth ‘will be watching’ their leaders When it comes to climate change, young people have specific demands that must be acknowledged - and offer solutions that other generations cannot. But globally there is a lack of youth representation in politics, and by extension, they are largely absent from climate change decision-making. Some youth summit participants reportedly questioned whether it achieved its aims - including the value of some workshops, why celebrities were involved and whether anything tangible was produced. Certainly, there was little evidence that world leaders at the climate summit were listening to the demands of young people. This was reflected in the failure of the world’s biggest-polluting countries to offer credible emissions reduction commitments. But the youth summit went some way to granting young people space and visibility in the formal decision-making process. Pressure from young people for climate action will not subside. Thunberg said it best when she warned world leaders that youth “will be watching you”. “The eyes of all future generations are upon you,” she said. “If you choose to fail us, I say we will never forgive you”.
