Israel-Hamas War: Gaza Devastated By Rains & Israeli Strikes

The United States has been the key ally of Israel and Ukraine in their wars with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Russia respectively. However, the nature of the support to the warring nations has been different in its own way.
Be it in terms of military or financial aid, America has been defending Israel and Ukraine since the beginning of the wars as it shares good relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In comparison, Netanyahu defies US President Joe Biden more bluntly than Zelensky, as the Ukrainian president has been more sympathetic since the war started.

Despite the US talks and advice, Zelensky has not been taking meaningful steps to achieve a realistic ceasefire with Russia. However, he is hoping to reclaim all of Ukraine's lost territory by force.

US support to Ukraine

The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on now for more than two years, in which Washington has been playing a key role in providing military aid to Ukraine in its fight with one of the world's most powerful militaries.
Since 2022, the US Congress has passed five bills and provided a total of USD 175 billion, mostly for intelligence, weapons, and training.
A major shift in US support for Ukraine came to light when the Biden administration authorised Kyiv to use US-supplied long-range missiles to strike deeper inside Russia.

This came after Russia positioned North Korean troops along Ukraine's northern border to try to reclaim hundreds of miles of territory seized by Ukrainian forces.
However, now the situation can change in a larger perspective with Donald Trump coming into the picture as he will soon take over the US administration.
President-elect Trump's foreign policy approach has always been more isolationist, stressing a focus on "America First".
This can further affect the wide foreign interventions, especially in Europe and Ukraine. After returning to office, his position on support to Ukraine and NATO could shift, which can further reduce US aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia.

US support to Israel

As compared to the past decades, US military aid to Israel has been the highest amid its war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. In the escalating war, over 40,000 Palestinians have died, the United Nations and the Gaza health ministry stated.
The war began on October 7, last year, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 Israelis and taking hundreds of people hostage in Gaza.
Following that, the war has escalated into a wider region, and now, it is not just with Hamas, but also with Hezbollah and Iran.
The US has spent at least USD 17.9 billion on military aid to Israel since the war began, according to a report for Brown University’s Costs of War project published in October.
The US, however, is bound by the Leahy Law, which means that the country cannot provide security assistance to foreign governments or groups that commit gross human rights violations.
However, some legal scholars have alleged that America has not applied the law in the case of Israel as it has with other West Asian countries.

Wider point of view

Some US and Israeli analysts have argued that Washington's aid to Israel should be reevaluated because Israel is now a wealthy country, the fourteenth richest per capita and one of the most advanced militaries in the world.
In May 2024, CFR Senior Fellow Steven A. Cook said that US military aid should be phased out over ten years and replaced with a series of bilateral agreements on security cooperation.
Late Martin S. Indyk, former US ambassador to Israel and CFR Distinguished Fellow, also called for alteration of the aid.
“The US-Israel relationship would be a lot healthier without this dependence. Time for Israel at seventy-five to stand on its own two feet,” he posted on X in June last year.
Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine war has taken a shift weeks before Donald Trump takes over the US administration, as Joe Biden rushes out billions of dollars more in military aid to Ukraine.
Recently, Trump has been insisting that Russia and Ukraine immediately reach a ceasefire, saying that Ukraine should probably prepare to receive less US military aid.

How US support strengthened Israel and Ukraine in their wars

The Israel Defence Force (IDF) issued an urgent evacuation warning for northern Gaza residents after the army claimed that long-range rockets were fired from Gaza on Saturday (Dec 28). Israeli army's Arabic spokesperson Col Avichay Adraee published a map showing the areas that were ordered to be evacuated.
Adree said in a post on X showing the map, “Urgent warning to all those who have not yet evacuated the area marked on the map, specifically the Beit Hanoun area. IDF intercepts 2 rockets launched from Gaza to Jerusalem, issues urgent evacuation order for Beit Hanoun

An Israeli raid targeting Hamas militants near the Kamal Adwan Hospital on Friday (Dec 27) has put the last functioning major medical facility in northern Gaza out of service, alleged the World Health Organization (WHO).

Key hospital or Hamas lair?

According to the WHO, critical hospital departments were severely damaged during the operation. "Initial reports indicate that some key departments were severely burnt and destroyed during the raid," it said in a statement on X.

The WHO expressed concern for the 60 health workers and 25 critically ill patients, including those on ventilators, who reportedly remain in the hospital. Patients in moderate to severe condition have been evacuated to the non-functional Indonesian Hospital, it said, adding that it was "deeply concerned for their safety."
The UN health body described the ongoing hostilities as catastrophic for Gaza's healthcare system, stating, "The systematic dismantling of the health system in Gaza is a death sentence for tens of thousands of Palestinians in need of health care."
However, the Israeli military alleged that the hospital was being used by Hamas as a "key stronghold for terrorist organisations".

Conflicting claims

The Israeli military, in a statement, claimed that the hospital was being used as a hideout for "terrorist operatives" since operations in northern Gaza intensified in October.
Tel Aviv said that before launching the operation near the Kamal Adwan Hospital, its troops "facilitated the secure evacuation of civilians, patients, and medical personnel".

Hamas denied allegations that its operatives were present in the hospital and accused Israeli forces of deliberately targeting the facility. In a statement, the group said, "The enemy's lies about the hospital aim to justify the heinous crime committed by the occupation army today, involving the evacuation and burning of all hospital departments as part of a plan for extermination and forced displacement."
The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry quoting hospital director Hossam Abu Safiyeh alleged that Israeli troops had "set on fire all surgery departments of the hospital" and "evacuated the entire medical staff and displaced people".

Three-week old baby girl freezes to death in Gaza while Israel and Hamas trade blame for ceasefire delay

Tel Aviv, Israel
As negotiations continue between Israel and the Hamas militant group to reach a deal, the group has still not given a list of living and dead hostages to be released in the first phase of a potential ceasefire-hostage deal, Israeli media, Kan public broadcaster reported.
It added that the Hamas is resisting pressure from mediators.
According to Israeli officials, Hamas is hoping for a "dramatic achievement" in the negotiations before providing the list, Channel 12 news reported.
The Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post, "Hamas has yet to deliver the list of hostages who are alive – without it, it’s impossible to reach a deal."
The official continued that although the mediators are pushing the militant group to deliver the list, Mohammed Sinwar, one of the key figures of Hamas in Gaza is refusing to share the list.

Sinwar succeeded his brother Yahya Sinwar, as leader of Hamas since Yahya was killed by the Israeli Defence Forces on October 16.
“It’s still possible to continue talking and advancing some issues without the list, but it will be impossible to reach a breakthrough without it,” the official said.
The official added that it was a long negotiation and that there would be consultations.
“There has been some progress in the talks, but it doesn’t seem a deal is going to be reached soon," the official said.

'Impossible to reach deal without it,' Hamas still hasn't sent list of living, dead hostages to Israel: Report

Gaza
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has reported that a child is killed every hour in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict. Since the war began, UNICEF has recorded the deaths of 14,500 children.

Loss of innocent lives

UNRWA condemned the killing of children, calling it something that cannot be justified. Survivors, the agency noted, are left physically and emotionally scarred, with many children deprived of education and left to search through rubble instead of learning in school.

Since the war began, UNICEF has recorded the deaths of 14,500 children. Loss of innocent lives UNRWA condemned the killing of children, calling it something that cannot be justified. Survivors, the agency noted, are left physically and emotionally scarred, with many children deprived of education and left to search through rubble instead of learning in school. Gaza: One child killed every hour, says UNRWA

Morning news brief: Pak-sponsored terrorists killed in India's UP; Gaza humanitarian crisis worsens, and more

Even as the global community continues to raise alarm over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, an Oxfam report on Sunday (Dec 22) revealed that in the last two-and-a-half months, since October, only 12 trucks distributed aid amid Israel blockades.

Systematic 'cruelty'?

Raising alarm over the worsening situation, the aid group said, "Of the meagre 34 trucks of food and water given permission to enter the North Gaza Governorate over the last 2.5 months, deliberate delays and systematic obstructions by the Israeli military meant that just 12 managed to distribute aid to starving Palestinian civilians."

This count, as per AFP, includes those made through Saturday (Dec 21).

Just a day after Israel slammed Pope Francis for referring to the bombing of children in Gaza as an act of "cruelty," Oxfam reported instances where shelters were destroyed. The aid organisation said that even when deliveries were completed, some were disrupted by subsequent shelling of shelter locations within hours.

"For three of these, once the food and water had been delivered to the school where people were sheltering, it was then cleared and shelled within hours," it alleged.

The aid organisation pointed out that delays and restrictions have left thousands of Palestinians without adequate supplies, deepening the ongoing crisis in the besieged region. Oxfam claimed that it and other international aid groups have been "continually prevented from delivering life-saving aid" in northern Gaza since October 6 this year, when Israel intensified its bombardment of the territory.

"Thousands of people are estimated to still be cut off, but with humanitarian access blocked it's impossible to know exact numbers," adding that "At the beginning of December, humanitarian organisations operating in Gaza were receiving calls from vulnerable people trapped in homes and shelters that had completely run out of food and water."

The Oxfam revelations come days after Human Rights Watch recently alleged that Israeli authorities have deliberately restricted water access in Gaza, with devastating consequences. On Thursday (Dec 19) in a report focused on water, the New York-based organization said deliberate efforts by Israeli authorities "of a systematic nature" to deprive Gazans of water, which had "likely caused thousands of deaths... and will likely continue to cause deaths."
