Qatar said on Saturday (Feb 17) that prospects for a new pause in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip were "not really promising." At the Munich Security Conference, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said efforts for a ceasefire had been complicated by the insistence of "a lot of countries" that any new truce involve further releases of hostages. "The pattern in the last few days is not really very promising," Prime Minister Al-Thani added. His remarks came as Hamas threatened to suspend its involvement in talks unless relief supplies were brought into the north of Gaza. Speaking to the news agency AFP, a senior source from Hamas said, "Negotiations cannot be held while hunger is ravaging the Palestinian people." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the demands "ludicrous." 'We got nothing except for delusional demands' On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel had sent negotiators for truce talks in Cairo as requested by the United States but they did not go back for further talks because Hamas' demands were "delusional." "We got nothing except for delusional demands from Hamas," Netanyahu told reporters, adding, that Israel would not give in to "international dictates" regarding a statehood agreement with the Palestinians. The militant group also took 253 people hostage, though more than 100 of them were freed in a short-lived November truce. Responding to the Hamas attack, Israel launched an air and ground offensive in Gaza that has killed more than 28,000 people. UN likely to vote on ceasefire soon In other latest news from the war, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is likely to vote on Tuesday on an Algerian push for the 15-member body to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict. Algeria put forward an initial draft resolution more than two weeks ago. However, the US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield quickly said the text could jeopardize "sensitive negotiations" aimed at brokering a pause in the war. To be adopted, the UNSC resolution needs at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the US, the United Kingdom (UK), France, China, or Russia.

"There is no agreement on the framework of the agreement yet... and the Qatari statement is rushed and not true," the source said. (With inputs from agencies)

In West Bank, the echoes of the Israel-Hamas conflict reverberate through once-bustling markets and silent streets. Businesses, once thriving, now face an unprecedented economic downturn.

West Bank economy plunges amid Gaza war fallout

In the quiet corners of the West Bank, once-thriving markets now stand deserted, echoing the economic fallout from the Israel-Hamas conflict that erupted on October 7. As we explore the repercussions through interviews recorded by AFP, we witness a region grappling with unprecedented challenges, where businesses that once flourished now face an uncertain future.

The health ministry in the Gaza Strip said on Sunday (Jan 7) that two journalists were killed in an Israeli air strike in the war-torn region as the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalates. According to the health ministry and medics, Mustafa Thuria, a video stringer for AFP news agency, and Hamza Wael Dahdouh, a journalist with Al Jazeera television network, were killed while they were travelling in a car.

Hamza's father Wael al-Dahdouh is Al Jazeera's bureau chief in the Gaza Strip and was also recently wounded in a strike, AFP reported. He was wounded after his wife and two children were killed by a separate Israeli strike in the initial weeks of the war which started on Oct 7 last year. Thuria, meanwhile, joined AFP in 2019.

In a statement, Hamas' media office condemned the killings. "We condemn this heinous crime committed by the Israeli occupation army in a bid to intimidate and prevent media coverage," it said. 77 journalists killed since the war started According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, by Dec 31 last year, at least 77 journalists and media workers had been killed since the war started on Oct 7. Israel-Hamas war: Health ministry in Gaza says two journalists killed in Israeli strike

Algerian international footballer Youcef Atal was handed an eight-month suspended sentence by a French court Wednesday for inciting religious hatred in a social media post about the conflict in Gaza. The 27-year-old defender, who plays for Ligue 1 side Nice, must also pay a fine of 45,000 euros ($49,000) for sharing a video calling for a "black day for the Jews", the Nice criminal court ruled.

He will further pay for details of his conviction to be published in regional daily Nice-Matin and national newspaper Le Monde. The comments at issue came in a video of a preacher, Mahmoud Al Hasanat, which Atal posted to his 3.2-million-follower Instagram account five days after Hamas' bloody October 7 assault on Israel.

Israel in response launched a campaign against the militant group which has cost over 22,000 lives according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. After speaking about the children killed in the bombardments, Al Hasanat called on god to send a "black day for the Jews" and "guide the hand" of Gazans striking back.

Atal was with the Algerian national team in his home country when he shared the video. He withdrew it the following day when Nice warned him it was likely to attract controversy, offering his apologies. Atal had apologised again to the court during the hearings, saying he had wanted to send a "message of peace" and did not watch the entire 35-second video before posting it.

That argument did not convince prosecutors or plaintiffs, mostly Jewish organisations and the Professional Football League (LFP). "Sharing a video means being party to its message and lending it visibility," prosecutor Meggi Choutia told the court. "There is no talk of peace at any moment in these 35 seconds," she added.

Nice have suspended Atal from playing "until further notice", while he received a seven-match ban -- since expired -- from the LFP. He has however appeared for Algeria's Fennecs three times, he is in their squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament, and received support in his home country.

Roi Yifrah, 35, orchestrated a daring scheme that involved impersonating a soldier to enter the war in Gaza.
