India tour of Sri Lanka: Match dates, venues, timings, teams and all you need to know

Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach is refreshing for Indian cricket, feels former coach and veteran Ravi Shastri. Replacing Rahul Dravid for the top position, Gambhir, whom Shastri calls a no-nonsense guy, will have plenty riding on his shoulders; however, with the mature team at the helm and having worked or played with most players, the ‘young’ coach Gambhir can make the most of this chance, Shastri believes.

Shastri backed Gautam to bring fresh ideas and instil confidence into the side as the busy international calendar looms. With the away Sri Lanka tour being Gambhir’s first assignment as India's head coach, the former two-time World Cup winner will lead the team in the home season, beginning with the Bangladesh series in early September.

Although Gautam hasn’t coached any domestic or international team before, he guided his former IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, to their third title this season as a mentor.

“He's contemporary; he just had a great season in the IPL,” Shastri said of Gambhir on the ICC Review. “I think he's the right age where he's young, he'll come with fresh ideas. He knows most of the players, especially in the white-ball format, having been part of teams in the IPL. So I think it's refreshing.

“And we know with Gautam, he's a no-nonsense guy. He'll have his ideas as well. And the good thing for him is he's got a mature team. He's got a settled team, a mature team. I think even though you might think you're mature, you might benefit from some fresh ideas. So I think it'll be interesting times,” Shastri continued.

‘Player management becomes a key for coach’

Having been in Gautam’s shoes before, Shastri knows and understands what a head coach brings to the table.

Ravi said it would be interesting to see how he manages his players and different squads with all the tools available.

"Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach," Shastri said.

"So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job, and he's got the experience," he further said.

However, Shastri believes Gautam’s biggest test will be to understand the players, temperament and personalities and help work on them to get the most out of them as cricketers.

"It's a question of just understanding his players as quickly as possible," Shastri said.

"What their strengths are, what kind of human beings they are, and what kind of temperaments do they have. What are their personalities? A lot goes behind the scenes to understand a human being.

"I think that will be his most important task, which I think, again should not be a problem because he's contemporary. He's seen these guys from the outside, he's dealt with a lot of guys who might have played with KKR as well and for Lucknow [Super Giants] when he was there.

"And he's been around the circuit, the moment he finished cricket - and that was not too long ago - and he still is around, plays a lot of the legends cricket as well,” Shastri added.

‘Gambhir’s a no-nonsense guy’ – Ravi Shastri calls new India coach appointment ‘refreshing’

Recently, Suryakumar Yadav pipped Hardik Pandya to become India's new T20I captain. Ahead of India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, which gets underway on Saturday (Jul 27), new head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that they named Surya the new captain -- after Rohit Sharma's T20I retirement -- due to Hardik's injury concerns. Paras Mhambrey, who recently stepped down as the bowling coach of the recently-resigned Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff, has now revealed that Dravid had also considered Surya as a T20I skipper during his tenure.

Hardik served as Rohit's deputy in white-ball formats since early 2023. Many thought he was next in line to take over after Hitman called it quits from the format after India's T20 World Cup triumph last month. However, Surya got the nod ahead of Gambhir-Agarkar. Mhambrey has revealed that even Dravid had Surya in mind as the next T20I skipper.

The ex-bowling coach told HT, "First and foremost when you pick a captain, you expect the captain to play all the games in that format. We, the coaches and selectors, have always felt that here's a guy (Surya) who's gonna have a long future in the T20 format. He has mastered that skill. One of the best in this format. He and Klaasen are maybe one or two in T20Is now based on their current form. Just the pure impact he has on winning games for India is phenomenal."

'After Rohit and Virat, we have Surya, who is experienced and closer to youngsters'

Mhambrey further mentioned, "He's been with the team. I've seen him interact with the young guys. On one hand, we had Rohit and Virat, guys who are stalwarts, and then we have Surya, who is experienced but probably even closer to the youngsters. He is very friendly with everyone. He has that respect from the younger lot. The youngsters need to interact with him, he's good at it." He added, "So, has a good bond with everyone in the team. He has come up through the ranks, so he has a lot of experience and is a smart cricketer."

Surya has been a force to reckon with ever since making his debut in T20Is in 2021. So far, he has 2,340 runs (third-most amongst Indians), including four centuries, in 68 games at a strike rate of 167.74. In 2022, when Dravid had just taken over as India's head coach, Surya was in sublime form and ended with 1,164 runs (most in the calendar year) in 31 games with a strike rate of 187.43. Thus, during Dravid's run, the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter cemented his T20I spot.

Ahead of the SL tour, Agarkar also told in a press conference that he got 'feedback from the dressing room' before naming the new T20I captain. Thus, the Dravid-led coaching staff might have also played a role in Surya's promotion.

WATCH: Gautam Gambhir takes spotlight during new-look Team India's first training session in Sri Lanka tour

Team India is all set for the latest transition phase as they take on Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series followed by a three-match ODI series starting on Saturday (Jul 24). The tour will mark the start of the Gautam Gambhir coaching era where fresh names have got opportunities in the T20I set-up while old faces like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retain their places in the ODI set-up. Speaking ahead of the tour, former India World Cup winner Ashish Nehra opened up on the linking of Virat and Gambhir who will be sharing the same dressing room while on national duty.

Nehra opens up on Virat, Gambhir

According to Nehra, there shouldn’t be any issues between the pair despite having clashed several times in the opposite dugout during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Nehra thinks, both are good professionals and fight till the end for the jerseys they don.

"Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir are two very passionate individuals. Whenever they play for a team, they can turn up against the opposition. But, when they are together in a dressing room, they are together, united for the team. You're talking about Virat Kohli, who has experience of over 16-17 years, Gautam Gambhir is also experienced,” said Nehra while speaking to Sports Tak.

“The things on the outside, people get an impression about it. It's not just Gambhir and Kohli, so many players have had on-field spats in the past, but when they play together for a team, they have done well as a player, as a coach-captain, as a coach and senior player," added Nehra.

Nehra opens up on Virat, Gambhir According to Nehra, there shouldn’t be any issues between the pair despite having clashed several times in the opposite dugout during the Indian Premier League (IPL). It's not just Gambhir and Kohli, so many players have had on-field spats in the past, but when they play together for a team, they have done well as a player, as a coach-captain, as a coach and senior player," added Nehra. After the T20 World Cup in June, both Rohit and Virat announced their retirement from the format for India, but are back in the national side for the ODI series. Rohit will be the team captain while Virat will serve as an important member of the ODI and Test side. Ashish Nehra backs Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir to come good for India ahead of Sri Lanka ODI series

Hardik Pandya was snubbed from T20I captaincy after Gautam Gambhir took over as India's new head coach, post Rahul Dravid's resignation. With India winning the 2024 T20 World Cup last month, held in West Indies and USA, Rohit Sharma retired from the format. Given Hardik served as his deputy in the mega event and also led India in many games during Hitman's sabbatical from T20Is, the all-rounder was the obvious choice to take over but Gambhir, and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, named Suryakumar Yadav as the new skipper. They reasoned out that since Hardik has been injury-prone, they need a captain who is on the field and available for all games.

Recently, Ashish Nehra -- former Indian pacer -- opined on Hardik's T20I captaincy snub. Nehra, who has worked with Hardik in Gujarat Titans (GT) during IPL 2022-23, feels 'not surprised' with the decision. The ex-speedster further mentioned that such changes are uncommon and lauded Gambhir-Agarkar for communicating it all with Hardik.

Talking to Sports Tak, Nehra said, "No, I am not surprised. When it comes to cricket, these things keep happening. Yes, Hardik Pandya was vice-captain in the World Cup, but at the same time, there is a new coach who has come in. Every coach and every captain have different thoughts. At this time, his (Gambhir's) ideas are toward that direction."

He stated, "I think Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir have made it clear, that's good. He is playing one format, 50-over also, he is playing less. Hardik Pandya, in white-ball cricket, will remain a very, very important player for Indian cricket. When you have him, you can have 4 fast bowlers, he brings a different balance to the side and keeps in mind, that there's no impact player in international cricket."

"Not just Hardik Pandya, but when you have so many matches, there will be changes. Even Rishabh Pant has captained, KL Rahul has captained," Nehra reasoned.

Despite some of his calls being criticised, Gill has been named India's white-ball vice-captain for the Sri Lanka tour, which starts on July 27 (Saturday). Nehra opened up on the youngster and said, "They have made Shubman Gill in not just one format but in all three formats. That means you are looking ahead."

The ODI World Cup winner added, "Shubman Gill is a work in progress. He is 24-25 years old now. He will get better as we go ahead. He has the desire to play all 3 formats, he has the heart to learn. He is not someone who thinks that whatever he is doing is right. He is not that kind of guy. Be it a youngster or an experienced player, he likes to have a discussion and learn."

'Not surprised': GT coach Ashish Nehra shares his take on Hardik Pandya's T20I captaincy snub

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim on new captain-coach Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir. With Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as new India head coach, until 2027 ODI World Cup, all eyes are on how he takes the team forward across formats. Gambhir will be working closely with Rohit, who will continue to lead India in Tests and ODIs and work in tandem with Suryakumar Yadav, the new T20I skipper. Uthappa, who has played under Gambhir in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), feels Rohit-Gambhir will be 'as effective' as Rohit-Dravid.

'Gambhir is someone who is always available and provides security to his group'

During a virtual interaction by Sony Sports Network, Uthappa said, "He (Gambhir) has been an incredible man manager. The narrative that is set about him as a player on social media is one that is quite 'Gambhir'. But, I think, individually, he is a thorough gentleman. He will be absolutely approachable. He is someone who is always available, he is very empathetic and he is there for his players. He looks after his players really well and he is someone who provides security for the group. We have seen that, not just as a captain, but in his mentorship roles at LSG and KKR. We have seen the results he has produced with both teams."

He further opined, "I don't think his leadership style will change very much. I just think that his passion and the intensity that he brings to this team will be different. He will expect high standards, and he will maintain a high standard himself as a leader. I think he will be a very fair leader and he is someone who provides security to his group. So, I think Rohit and Gautam will make a different combination than Rohit and Dravid, but I think it will be as effective."

He will look for the big opportunity, he will try and get that same attitude and the same kind of performance from his players. He will create opportunities for people to thrive, and he will create an environment like that, I can vouch for it."

"He is not just a great captain, a great tactician but he is an incredible leader of men. He is an incredible leader of people. He creates infrastructures within the group that allow people to thrive. I believe in people operating from a place of security so that they can thrive rather than operating from a place of insecurity where they try to survive," the two-time IPL winner concluded.

‘Rohit and Gautam will make...’: T20 WC winner’s big claim on new captain-coach after Dravid’s term

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on his relationship with veteran batter Virat Kohli, saying the bond he shares with Kohli is not for everyone to know and definitely not for TRP. Gambhir, who has a history with Kohli, including their latest verbal brawl during last year’s IPL, added Kohli and he represent 140 crore Indians, and at the end of the day, that matters.

"What kind of a relationship I have with Virat Kohli is not for TRP. At the moment, we are representing India, we are representing 140 crore Indians. I have an excellent relationship with him off the field,” Gambhir said when asked about his connection with his former teammate.

Meanwhile, Virat and Gautam have played together for Delhi in domestic cricket and later for India across formats for several years. Two aggressive yet stylish cricketers have had some bitter memories to look back also, beginning with an on-field brawl during an IPL season over a decade ago.

Following Kohli’s wicket during that game (where Kohli was playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gambhir was leading Kolkata Knight Riders), both aggressively approached each other, only for others to interrupt and separate them.

Upon undergoing surgery in London earlier this year, Shami returned home and, per Gambhir, has also started bowling. Though he will miss the white-ball leg against Sri Lanka, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs starting July 27, Shami might return during the home season that begins with Bangladesh Tests on September 19.

“He (Shami) has started to bowl. The first Test is on 19th September. That was always the goal (him making a comeback by that time). Whether he can make it back to the squad by that time, I'll have to speak with the guys at the NCA,” Gambhir said.

Is the three-different-team theory a myth?

Gambhir answered the most talked-about question since his appointment as Team India's head coach, ‘Will India have three different teams for each format going forward?’

Although Gautam didn’t deny that this could happen in future, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the idea is to have the right players playing the right formats.

Virat and Rohit announced their T20I retirements following the World Cup win in the Americas but were picked in the 15-man ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series, starting July 27.

Speaking highly of the most successful India pair in the past decade, Gautam said both could continue contributing to the team's success for a few more years. Keeping an eye on the upcoming schedule, including a busy home season followed by five Tests Down Under and then the Champions Trophy in February, Kohli and Rohit have plenty to look forward to and deliver on the big stage.

"I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it's the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup as well," Gambhir said during his maiden presser as Team India’s head coach.

"One thing I can be very clear of is that both those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy [in 2025] and a big tour of Australia [in November 2024], obviously, they would be motivated enough. And then, hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 [ODI] World Cup as well,” he continued.

Re-emphasising the importance of cricket being a team sport, Gautam said the decision to stick around till then remains personal to both and that any call made will be looking at the team's benefit.

"But this is a very personal decision. I can't say how much cricket is left in them. Ultimately, it's up to them as well, it's up to the players. How much can they contribute to the team's success because, ultimately, it's the team that is important.

"But looking at what Virat and Rohit can deliver, I think they still have a lot of cricket [left to play]. They're still world-class players, and obviously, any team would want to have both of them for as long as possible,” Gambhir continued.

Workload management

Rohit, 37, Kohli, 35, and Bumrah (Team India’s best bowler across formats) are three key players, and Gambhir believes managing their workload is in the best interest of Indian cricket.

"I've said it before, workload management for someone like Jasprit (Bumrah) is important. He is one rare bowler, which anyone would want. You want him to play important games. That's why the workload management for not just him but fast bowlers is important."

"If you are a batter, who's batting well, you might as well just play all formats. Rohit and Virat have retired from T20Is now, so they will play two formats from now. Hopefully, they are available for most of the games,” Gambhir said.

Meanwhile, Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as the new coach until the next ODI World Cup, will begin his stint with the away Sri Lanka series.

India tour of Sri Lanka: Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate set to join Gautam Gambhir's coaching staff

Suryakumar Yadav penned a heartfelt note on his social media handle upon being appointed Team India’s new T20I captain. Following the T20 World Cup win in the Americas, then-skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format, thus relinquishing his T20I captaincy. And with Gautam Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as the new coach, the BCCI and the management decided to name Surya as the new captain until the next major assignment in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.

Given all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s injury-related past and that he was the vice-captain for the recently-concluded T20 WC, he was overlooked due to fitness concerns, as Gambhir wants a fully fit captain to lead India in the shortest format.

Taking to his Instagram handle, Suryakumar wrote, “Thank you so much for outpouring love, support and best wishes from you. Last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful. 🧿Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words. This new role brings with it, a lot of responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm. I hope to keep receiving your support and blessings.♥️ All fame reaches God, God is great 🙏"

Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra opened up on Virat Kohli's IPL 2023 feud with Gautam Gambhir. In a recent interaction, Mishra recalled the epic face-off between Gambhir and Kohli during Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) home clash versus the then-known Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2023. Kohli took a jibe at Lucknow pacer Naveen-ul-Haq and Kyle Mayers, after the game, which wasn't well received by LSG mentor Gambhir and the two came face-to-face before being separated from others. Nonetheless, the two moved past this on-field feud during IPL 2024. Mishra, who has been part of the LSG camp since the franchise's addition in 2022, opened up on the Gambhir-Kohli face-off and revealed that it was the former who ended things peacefully.

Speaking on YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra's show, Mishra said, "I saw a good thing about Gautam. Virat Kohli didn't go towards him, Gautam went towards him. He went and asked, 'How are you, how's your family.' So it was Gautam who ended the feud and not Kohli." He added, "So Gautam showed his big heart at that time.
Newly appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir sticks to his demand of having the backroom staff of his choice. Shortly after BCCI replaced Rahul Dravid with him for the top position in Indian cricket, Gautam proposed a few names for the respective roles in his coaching panel.

After several reports did rounds that the BCCI rejected Gambhir’s plea of appointing domestic giant Vinay Kumar as the bowling coach, Gautam proposed former Protean seamer Morne Morkel’s name for the same, with the BCCI yet to take any call on this.

A cricket veteran, Morkel comes with decent coaching experience at both international and franchise-based levels. While Gautam and Morkel worked together as part of the backroom staff at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL, leading them to bag playoff spots twice, the lanky seamer also coached the Pakistan Cricket Team during last year’s 50-over World Cup in India.

Team India’s away tour of Sri Lanka, which begins on July 26 with three T20Is in Pallekele, will be Gautam’s first series as the new head coach. (With inputs from agencies)

Gautam Gambhir urges BCCI to consider Morne Morkel for bowling coach role – Reports

Gautam Gambhir shared a clear and bold message for Team India after his appointment as head coach. The former Indian opener stressed on the importance of playing all three formats with a focus on injury and workload management. He made it clear that players would need to do the right thing in the best interest of the team. On Tuesday (Jul 9), BCCI named Gambhir as Rahul Dravid's successor, who signed off with India's T20 World Cup win last month.

In a video posted by Star Sports, Gambhir said, "Injuries are part of sportsmen's life. I am not a big believer to identify people that okay we are going to keep him for Test matches and we are going to keep him and we are going to manage his injury and workload and stuff."

He further opined, "Look professional cricketers, you got a very small span. When you are playing for your country you want to play as much as you can. When you are in very good form, go ahead and play all the three formats."

If you're good...: Gambhir gives sneak peek into no-nonsense approach, shares first message as India coach

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi reacted to Gautam Gambhir's appointment as the India head coach. On Tuesday (Jul 9), BCCI announced Gambhir's appointment as the senior men's team coach until the 2027 ODI World Cup. He will take charge from the forthcoming India tour of Sri Lanka, starting later this month. Afridi, who has had on-field arguments with Gambhir during their playing days, gave an honest take on Gambhir, saying 'he is very straightforward' and has a chance to do well in his new role.

India’s tour of Sri Lanka 2024: Pallekele to hosts T20Is, Colombo gets ODIs as schedule announced

Team India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will resume work from the Sri Lanka tour (later in July).
“It is an absolute honour to serve my tri-colour, my people, my country," Gambhir said in a BCCI statement.

Here, we look at all the perks Gautam Gambhir would have till he remains the India head coach.

Perks and benefits of being Team India head coach

Per the latest reports, the BCCI delayed Gautam’s appointment announcement due to salary negotiations. Considering Rahul Dravid was drawing a salary of $1.2 million yearly (INR 12 crore) as Team India's head coach, Gautam would earn more. Besides this, Gautam is entitled to several other perks.

In 2019, the Indian Cricket Board revised its daily allowance policy, entitling the coach to earn $250 (nearly Rs 21,000) daily - double the previous amount, while on an away tour. Outside of this, the BCCI will cover Gambhir’s business class travel, accommodation and laundry expenses.

The former opener will also get world-class travel experience and accommodation while on national duty.

New backroom staff

One of the five conditions he kept in front of the board before accepting the offer, was that Gambhir would like to have the backroom staff of his choice.

Several reports suggest that Abhishek Nayar (batting coach), Vinay Kumar (bowling coach) and Netherland’s Ryan ten Doeschate are the ones Gambhir wants in his backroom staff.

Gautam Gambhir asks BCCI for ex-KKR teammate Ryan ten Doeschate to be part of India's coaching staff - Reports

Gautam Gambhir's first-ever assignment as Team India head coach will be the forthcoming India tour of Sri Lanka, starting later this month. The selection of the team will take place later this week as India will play 3 ODIs and T20Is each in the Island nation. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the shortest format, it is likely that Hardik Pandya, if not rested, will be named the captain whereas KL Rahul can lead the ODI side.

As per a report in India Today, Gambhir's first meeting with the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee is scheduled for later this week. It is understood that Gambhir is keen to have two different captains for the two formats. For ODIs in the upcoming Lankan tour, Rahul is being considered to take charge. The wicketkeeper-batter, who has been consistent for India at No.5 in ODIs, has captaincy experience in the shorter format. He led India to an ODI series win in South Africa last year.

Hardik, on the other hand, is likely to lead the Indian T20I side. He has led India in T20Is during Rohit Sharma's break and served as Hitman's deputy in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA.

"It is expected that in the absence of Rohit, Hardik and KL are the options to be given the responsibility of captain. Both have captained the team earlier," a top source in BCCI told India Today.

"If Hardik is not available for the T20Is, you might see Suryakumar Yadav as captain in T20Is and Rahul in ODIs. But for now, it seems that Hardik and KL will lead the team," the source further added.

After India's T20 WC triumph, in the recently-held 20-nation mega event, Rohit, Kohli and even Jasprit Bumrah are expected to be rested for the entire SL tour. India's tour commences on July 27 and will conclude on August 7. The trio of Rohit, Bumrah and Kohli are likely to be back before the commencement of India's home season in September.
