Gambhir urges BCCI to consider Morne Morkel for bowling coach role – Reports
Newly appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir sticks to his demand of having the backroom staff of his choice. Shortly after BCCI replaced Rahul Dravid with him for the top position in Indian cricket, Gautam proposed a few names for the respective roles in his coaching panel.
After several reports did rounds that the BCCI rejected Gambhir’s plea of appointing domestic giant Vinay Kumar as the bowling coach, Gautam proposed former Protean seamer Morne Morkel’s name for the same, with the BCCI yet to take any call on this.
A cricket veteran, Morkel comes with decent coaching experience at both international and franchise-based levels. While Gautam and Morkel worked together as part of the backroom staff at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL, leading them to bag playoff spots twice, the lanky seameralso coached the Pakistan Cricket Team during last year’s 50-over World Cup in India.
Gautam believes Morkel, who played over 200 matches for South Africa across formats in a decade-plus glorious career, can be the top choice for the bowling coach role, helping Gambhir to strengthen the pace department during this three-and-a-half-year tenure. Per the latest reports, some talks have also taken place between the board and the player, now settled in Australia.
While BCCI had picked former World Cup winner Zaheer Khan for the role, Gambhir suggested Lakshmipathy Balaji’s name alongside Vinay Kumar for the said position. Also, considering Morkel has a young family with two little kids and the logistics involved, including lengthy time travel from South Africa to India during this tenure, all stakeholders are undecided.

Of the five conditions Gambhir had laid before accepting Team India’s head coach role, choosing the backroom staff of his choice was one. If BCCI accepts Gambhir’s proposal of appointing Morkel as the bowling coach, the lanky seamer would replace Paras Mhambrey, who excelled under head coach Dravid during the previous stint.
While BCCI is also considering Gambhir’s choices for the batting coach – India’s Abhishek Nayar and Netherlands’ Ryan ten Doeschate, the Indian board is keen on retaining T Dilip as the fielding coach going forward.
Team India’s away tour of Sri Lanka, which begins on July 26 with three T20Is in Pallekele, will be Gautam’s first series as the new head coach.
