
Team India is all set to begin the Gautam Gambhir coaching era at the end of the month as they face Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series and T20I series. While Gambhir’s appointment was confirmed last week, the suspense on who will join him in the coaching staff remains unanswered. However, according to reports and as expected Gambhir will reunite with his Kolkata Knight Riders colleagues Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate for the Sri Lanka tour.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, Nayar and Ten Doeschate are set to join the Indian team’s Sri Lanka tour later in the month with an announcement to follow soon. Both will act in the capacity of assistant coach and will have T Dilip as the fielding coach who was also part of Rahul Dravid’s coaching staff. However, it is still not clear who will join the Indian team as bowling coach, butformer South Africa pacer Morne Morkel is said to be among the top contenders for the job.
The Indian team will depart for Sri Lanka on Monday (Jul 22)on a charter flight from Mumbai, before which theywill hold a presser. Gambhir will be officially unveiled as the coach of the side in Andheri and will be joined by new T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav. The team is likely to leave for Colombo at around 1:00 pm (local time)on the same day.
Nayar will join the Indian team on their way to Sri Lanka on Monday as he is in the financial capital training with the Mumbai Ranji team as part of the pre-season. He will leave the camp midway and join the Indian team while Ten Doeschate will join directly from the United States next week as he is currently with the LA Knight Riders as part of their Major League Cricket (MLC) coaching staff.
In Morkel’s case, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to strike a deal and will be hoping to sign him before the tour officially begins on July 28.
