The report mentioned that he will return on Sunday to Washington for high-stakes negotiations with Republicans to avert a potentially catastrophic debt default.&nbsp;

Ahead of&nbsp;Hiroshima G7 summit scheduled from 19 May, Kishida is working to repair their fraught ties amid shared concerns over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

One of the main issues between the two countries is the legacy of Japan's colonization of Korea from 1910 to 1945. Many Koreans still harbor resentment towards Japan for its brutal treatment during this period, including forced labor and sexual slavery.

Before leaving on Sunday, Kishida stated that the two leaders were trying to resume their so-called "shuttle diplomacy" which had been put on hold for years due to a contentious trade dispute including the problem of forced labour.

Kishida invited Yoon to a G7 meeting in Hiroshima this month. In their March summit, both the nations agreed to eliminate tit-for-tat trade restrictions. In a statement, Kishida expressed his desire for "an honest exchange of views" with Yoon, "based on a relationship of trust".

Kishida also laid flowers at the Seoul National Cemetery after his arrival, which is home to South Korea's war dead.&nbsp;

According to local reports, Yoon is anticipated to organise a dinner party in the presidential mansion where Korean barbecue would probably be served. Yoon may even prepare food for Kishida.

The Supreme Court of South Korea in 2018 ordered Japanese companies to pay compensation to those who were subjected to forced labour during the Korean War, angering Tokyo and leading to a deterioration in relations.

In recent years, economic issues have also become a source of tension between Japan and South Korea. In 2019, Japan imposed restrictions on the export of key materials used in the production of semiconductors to South Korea, citing national security concerns. This move was seen by many in South Korea as retaliation for the country's court rulings on compensation for forced labor during Japan's colonial rule.

Yoon, who assumed office last year, has attempted to put the past behind him. Earlier this year, he unveiled a proposal to recompense victims without assistance from Tokyo.

A district court in Japan's Sapporo in March 2021 ruled the nation's ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional. The Sapporo court argued that laws or regulations that deprive same-sex couples of the legal benefits of marriage are discriminatory and violate Article 14 of the Japanese Constitution. The court also ruled that Article 24 of the Constitution, which defines marriage as "based only on the mutual consent of both sexes", does not prohibit the recognition of same-sex marriages. However, in June 2022, another district court, this one in Osaka, upheld the constitutionality of the ban on same-sex marriage.&nbsp;

She said that Pyongyang's development of nuclear weapons was solely done to protect itself from American threats. She urged Washington to halt its "hostile policy" towards North Korea in order to safeguard its own security. "It is an anachronistic idea if you think that only Washington has the right and capability to carry out a nuclear strike," reported Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoting the foreign minister.&nbsp;

"As long as we have the strength to hit back against U.S. nuclear threats, we will never seek recognition or approval from anyone."

This comes amid a rise in tensions in the Korean peninsula and hours before the Group of Seven (G7) rich nations condemned North Korea’s series of missile tests in the region.

In a recent message to Kim, Xi reportedly said that China and North Korea’s “traditional friendship” has “weathered the trials of the changed international situation for a long time, constantly maintained the trend of its development and got stronger with the passage of time”.&nbsp;

The Chinese president, as per the KCNA added that “international and regional situations are now changing seriously and in a complicated way.”&nbsp;

“I am willing to strengthen strategic communications with Comrade General Secretary (Kim), jointly lead the direction of development of China-DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) relations, and promote friendly cooperation between the two sides to a higher level,” said Xi referring to North Korea by its&nbsp;formal name.&nbsp;

China has been a long-time ally of North Korea as well as&nbsp;its main economic benefactor. The relations between the countries were forged during the Korean War (1950-53) when Mao Zedong sent in millions of “volunteers” to fight US-led United Nations forces to a standstill.

According to reports, Xi’s message was delivered to Kim last week, on Wednesday. However, it was made public hours before the G7 diplomats called on North Korea to “refrain from any other destabilising or provocative actions, including any further nuclear tests or launches that use ballistic missile technology.”&nbsp;

Washington’s top diplomat warns Sudan

The incident has since prompted a direct warning from Blinken who called RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, and Sudan’s army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Speaking about the call, the US’ top diplomat said, “I made very clear that any attacks threats, dangerous posed to our diplomats were totally unacceptable.”

So far, more than 200 people have been killed and more than 1,800 injured since the fighting erupted, said the United Nations. The attack on the US convoy also comes after a European Union ambassador in Sudan was “assaulted” in his own residence, foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote on Twitter.

He added, “Security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law.” The EU ambassador, in question, was veteran Irish diplomat Aidan O'Hara. However, an EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali told AFP that he was "OK" following the assault.

RSF’s response to Blinken’s call

The RSF leader, Dagalo while acknowledging the calls for a “temporary ceasefire” from friendly nations as well as after the conversation with Blinken, took to Twitter and wrote, “The RSF reaffirms its approval of a 24 HR armistice to ensure the safe passage of civilians and the evacuation of the wounded.” &nbsp;

However, in subsequent tweets, he accused the Sudanese Armed Forces of failing to “honor this ceasefire, bombing densely populated areas from the air and endangering civilian lives. These actions are a flagrant violation of the foundations and principles of international and humanitarian law.”&nbsp;

He added that the Sudanese Military “don’t want to expand our operations at this step.” Abdullah also reportedly said that the army is “worried about our citizens being hurt or there being civilian victims because of this conflict”.&nbsp;

Though the discussion between foreign ministers of the seven countries also found mention of Chinese and North Korean aggressiveness in Northeast Asia, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued to dominate the three-day talks.

&nbsp;“There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities such as Russia’s attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure,” the joint communique stated.

“We remain committed to intensifying sanctions against Russia, coordinating and fully enforcing them,” the communique said, and would support “for as long as it takes” Ukraine as it defends itself.

The document or the communique acts as a template for global leaders to use at the G7 summit that will be held in Hiroshima next month. It also mentions Iran, Myanmar, nuclear proliferation and other “grave issues.”

Two crises were discussed in detail in the meeting. China's increasing threats to Taiwan—the self-governing democracy that Beijing claims as its own—and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The 36-page communique&nbsp;

After two days of discussions between the environment and energy ministers of the bloc, they released a 36-page statement outlining some of their commitments ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima set to take place next month.&nbsp;

“Recognizing the current global energy crisis and economic disruptions, we reaffirm our commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 at the latest,” said the statement.&nbsp;

The countries have also pledged to contribute to “expanding renewable energy globally” and reaffirmed their commitment to “achieving a fully or predominantly decarbonised power sector by 2035.”&nbsp;

This includes phasing out domestic “unabated” coal power generation – plants that do not capture emissions and prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere and also encouraged other countries to follow suit.&nbsp;

However, the G7 ministers have not given a deadline for phasing out coal-fired power plants, which has been a long-standing issue as many countries including Japan still heavily rely on this method for generating power. Tokyo relies on coal for nearly one-third of its power generation.&nbsp;

The G7 nations which include countries like Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States,&nbsp;account for some 40 per cent of the world’s economic activity and are also responsible for nearly a quarter of global carbon emissions. The countries are also committed to ending plastic pollution and reducing additional plastic pollution to zero by 2040.&nbsp;

Investment in critical minerals

The G7 nations also acknowledged the importance of critical minerals for the transition to clean energy and reaffirmed the “need to prevent economic and security risks caused by vulnerable supply chains, monopolisation, lack of diversification of existing suppliers of critical minerals.”

In this context, they have also decided to boost the development of new mines and supply chains for critical minerals in a “responsible manner that promotes transparency and traceability” to keep up with demand. It added, “Currently $13 billion fiscal support that can be used for domestic and foreign projects is prepared across the G7 countries.”

Indian&nbsp;environment&nbsp;minister's address

Indian Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav also addressed the plenary session of the G7 ministers’ meeting in Japan and spoke about how economic development is the first defence against climate change. He also took to Twitter and wrote, “The global goal of reaching net zero by 2050 needs enhanced emission descaling by developed nations.”

G7 vows to work towards cleaner, renewable energy with no deadline

Finance ministers from the seven largest global economies announced plans this week to work more closely with developing countries on supply chains security. The G7 leaders view a high concentration of supply chains in a single country as undesirable. This comes as the United States and Europe are doing the same – in light of increased tensions around Taiwan, a major producer of semiconductor chips. Washington has allocated more than $50 billion dollars to re-shore chip research and manufacturing. The global need for the chips is expected to double over the next decade.
