Addressing a press conference in Japan, Guterres said that it was time to reform both the Security Council and Bretton Woods to align with the “realities of today's world,” adding that both institutions reflected the power relations of 1945 and are in need of an update. He also noted how the global financial architecture had become “outdated, dysfunctional and unfair,” as per Reuters.

This was said in the context of the economic shocks that the world witnessed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine while the system&nbsp;put in place has failed to “fulfil its core function as a global safety net,” said the UN chief.&nbsp;

He also went on to note how he felt a growing consciousness among developing countries at the G7 summit that not enough steps are being taken to reform these decades-old institutions or “remove the frustrations” of the Global South, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>G7 and the Global South</h2>

In its World Economic Outlook published earlier this year, the International Monetary Fund said that India and China will account for nearly 50 per cent of the world’s growth in 2023. On the other hand, it is also worth noting that the G7 group of wealthy countries’ economic clout has also shrunk in the past three decades or so.&nbsp;

According to the IMF, the seven major economies account for nearly 30 per cent of the global GDP in 2023, as opposed to 50.7 per cent in 1980, reported Reuters. “The G7 members were able to discuss with some of the most important emerging economies in the world,” said Guterres.&nbsp;

As the G7 presidency holder, Japan also invited leaders from the so-called Global South to Hiroshima for talks including Indian PM Narendra Modi, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.&nbsp;

“It is a matter of analysis, why do we have to talk about peace and stability in different forums? Why is the UN, which was started with the idea of establishing peace, not successful in preventing conflicts today?” the Indian PM questioned.&nbsp;

He also went on to ask why even the definition of terrorism has not been accepted in the UN, adding that “If one introspects, one thing is clear - The institutions created in the last century are not in line with the system of the twenty-first century,” as quoted by PTI.&nbsp;

“They do not reflect the realities of the present. That is why it is necessary that reforms should be implemented in big institutions like the UN,” said the Indian PM, adding that these institutions also need to become the voice of the Global South. “Otherwise, we will only keep talking about ending the conflicts. The UN and the Security Council will remain just a talk shop,” said PM Modi, at a G7 session.&nbsp;

New Delhi&nbsp;is eyeing a permanent seat on the UNSC, which is currently held by five countries – Russia, the United Kingdom, China, France and the United States, who wield the power to veto any substantive resolution.&nbsp;

The leaders said they support ASEAN centrality and unity, and that they are committed to working with Pacific island countries "to achieve shared aspirations and address shared challenges" and that they remain committed to strengthening cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

"We welcome the work of IORA as the Indian Ocean region’s premier forum for addressing the region’s challenges. We recognise India’s leadership in finalising the IORA Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (IOIP) and express our support for its implementation. We thank Bangladesh for its term as IORA Chair and commit to working with Sri Lanka and India as they assume the roles of IORA Chair and Vice Chair respectively this year," it said.

They discussed various areas of collaboration, including climate change, health security, infrastructure development, digital connectivity, and cybersecurity.&nbsp;

Additionally, the statement announces the launch of multiple new initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region.&nbsp;

Quad announced its 'Statement of Principles on Clean Energy Supply Chains in the Indo-Pacific', which will provide a basis for the bloc's engagement in the region on clean energy supply chain development.&nbsp;

Through this, they "plan to implement a suite of activities to build the region’s capacity to detect and respond rapidly to outbreaks of diseases with epidemic and pandemic potential."

To boost infrastructure expertise across the Indo-Pacific they announced the 'Quad Infrastructure Fellowships Program'.

The leaders also highlighted the importance of upholding international law and addressing maritime challenges. They expressed support for the United Nations and its reform agenda and emphasised the need to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

G7 leaders acknowledged the increasing prominence of generative AI across countries and sectors and emphasised the need to assess its opportunities and challenges.

"We recognise the need to immediately take stock of the opportunities and challenges of generative AI, which is increasingly prominent across countries and sectors," said the G7 in a statement.

The G7 statement outlined plans regarding the establishment of the Hiroshima AI process.

"We task relevant ministers to establish the Hiroshima AI process, through a G7 working group, in an inclusive manner... for discussions on generative AI by the end of this year."

"These discussions could include topics such as governance, safeguard of intellectual property rights including copyrights, promotion of transparency, response to foreign information manipulation, including disinformation, and responsible utilisation of these technologies," said the statement.

The new working group, as per an AFP report, will collaborate with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI). This month, the European Parliament also took steps towards EU-wide regulation of AI systems, including ChatGPT, with the aim of adopting a final law after negotiations with member states.

Speaking before a US Senate Panel on Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified that while generative AI has the potential to address significant challenges, such as climate change and cancer treatment, its increasing power necessitates regulatory intervention by governments.&nbsp;

"We think that regulatory intervention by governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models," he said.

Earlier during the bilateral meeting, Modi told Zelensky that he understands the pain of war currently faced by the Ukrainian people through the experiences of Indian students rescued from Ukraine at the onset of war last year.

Shortly after the bilateral talks between the two leaders, India's foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla told reporters that Zelensky appreciated India's support to Kyiv during the Covid crisis.

"The President recalled how he himself had taken Covishield vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India," Shringla said.

"President Zelensky expressed appreciation for India's support not only for vaccines but also for affordable and quality pharmaceuticals. He also suggested that India and Ukraine should collaborate in joint manufacture and production of a wide range medicines and other health equipment," Shringla added.

As many as 354,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or injured in the Ukraine war, according to a trove of purported US intelligence documents posted online in April 2023.

Russia said on Friday that it has banned 500 Americans, including former President Barack Obama, from entering the country in reaction to US sanctions.

"In response to the anti-Russian sanctions regularly imposed by the Biden administration... entry into the Russian Federation is closed for 500 Americans," the foreign ministry stated, adding that Obama was on the list.

The United States added hundreds of fresh companies and individuals to its sanctions blacklist on Friday, broadening its efforts to choke off Russia's economy in response to the Ukraine conflict, as reported by AFP.

"Washington should have learned a long time ago that not a single hostile step against Russia will be left unanswered," the foreign ministry said.

Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers were among those named.

Erin Burnett of CNN and Rachel Maddow and Joe Scarborough of MSNBC were also present on the list.&nbsp;

Russia claimed it has blacklisted senators, congressmen, and think tank members "involved in the spread of Russophobic attitudes and fakes," as well as the leaders of companies that "supply weapons to Ukraine."

Experts believe that while the sanctions have certainly harmed Russia's economy, they have so far failed to deter Putin from prosecuting a conflict that has killed tens of thousands and reduced towns to ashes.

As per US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the operation on Friday targeted a worldwide network that procures components for the Russia-based firm in charge of manufacturing the Orlan drone, which Russian military and its proxies are operating in Ukraine.

"We are also building on the success of our efforts to ensure that Russia is no longer able to weaponize the availability of energy against us and against the world," the statement added.

UK PM Rishi Sunak tweeted that ensuring Ukraine wins is the most important thing the leaders can do for global peace and security. "We are banning all imports of Russian diamonds, copper, aluminium and nickel. Sanctions are having a clear impact in degrading Putin’s war effort.
