<p>On Nov 17,&nbsp;Hiroshi Hase, a former leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party who is now&nbsp;governor of Ishikawa prefecture, said in a speech that he provided gifts to IOC members amid their deliberations over the 2020 Olympics host city.</p>

<p>The report said that Tokyo was up against Turkey's Istanbul and Spain's Madrid when the vote was held in 2013. Hase was the head of the Tokyo committee and said he was given access at that time to&nbsp;discretionary funds,&nbsp;which were also known as secret funds.</p>

<p>Hase added that he arranged for the creation of photo albums, each costing around $1,350,&nbsp;detailed the sporting and political careers of 100 IOC members, and travelled across the world to deliver these gifts to them. The report said that the provision of gifts to IOC members would be a violation of the committee's code of ethics.</p>

<p>Days after this speech, the&nbsp;Ishikawa governor said that his remarks were&nbsp;inappropriate and could cause misunderstanding, and he retracted them.</p>

Nearly half (49.3 per cent) of these households have only one child, 38 per cent have two, while those with three or more stood at 12.7 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Japan may not exist&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In March, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's close aide Masako Mori stated that the Asian country might cease to exist if the current trend of falling birth rate continues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If we go on like this, the country will disappear. It's the people who have to live through the process of disappearance who will face enormous harm. It's a terrible disease that will afflict those children," warned Mori.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's not falling gradually, it's heading straight down. A nosedive means children being born now will be thrown into a society that becomes distorted, shrinks and loses its ability to function," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His statement came after data showed that the number of babies born in Japan in 2022 fell below 800,000 for the first time since record-keeping&nbsp;began in 1899.</p>

<p>After Kishida's statement not ruling&nbsp;out the possibility of opening a NATO office, China reacted sternly. Beijing said Asia-Pacific does not welcome NATO's plan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We want to say that the Asia-Pacific does not welcome group confrontation, does not welcome military confrontation," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.</p>

<p>Mao warned that Japan should be "extra cautious on the issue of military security" given its "history of aggression".&nbsp;</p>
