Japan plans to start releasing ‘treated’ radioactive water as soon as late August: Report

Here, we bring you a quick round-up of all the latest news and top headlines from all across the globe: Japan has not yet decided on a date to begin the release of Fukushima water the treated radioactive water from the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Japan: Fukushima water release | China ravaged by rain and flood

<p>Over 12 years after Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant accident after a devastating tsunami, a fish caught near drainage outlets at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was discovered to contain radioactive caesium levels 180 times above the safety limits.</p>

<p>The black rockfish, caught on 18 May, was found to have 18,000 becquerels per kilogram of caesium-137, surpassing the legal maximum level of 100 becquerels per kg.</p>

<p>The rockfish was caught in an area where rainwater from the regions around reactors one, two, and three, which experienced meltdowns during the March 2011 disaster, flows into the inner breakwater. The sediment in the inner breakwater's seabed has a caesium concentration of over 100,000 becquerels per kg.</p>

<p>Amid this latest discovery of lethal radioactivity, the prospect of Japan releasing 1.3 million tonnes of treated water from the Fukushima plant has raised concerns in the region and has worried the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).</p>

<p>Hong Kong has even threatened to ban food imports from 10 Japanese prefectures if the water release proceeds as planned.</p>

<p>In response, China has initiated blanket radioactivity testing of Japanese seafood imports, leading some wholesalers to stop handling produce from Japan.</p>

<h2><strong>Impact of release of treated Fukushima water minimal: Japan</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, when asked about the concerns surrounding the water discharge, a Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) official reassured that they were confident the impact on the public and environment would be minimal, the Guardian reported.</p>

<p>TEPCO has been periodically removing fish from inside the port since 2012, using fishnets to prevent them from escaping the port. Between May 2022 and May 2023, a total of 44 fish with caesium levels exceeding 100 becquerels per kg have been found in the Fukushima plant port, with 90% of them caught in or near the inner breakwater. Notably, an eel caught in June 2022 and a rock trout caught in April 2023 also exhibited particularly high radioactivity levels.</p>

<h2><strong>Monitoring of radioactively contaminated fish</strong></h2>

<p>Regular monitoring of fish from the inner breakwater was suspended in January 2016 after the installation of nets to contain potentially contaminated fish within the area. However, after a black rockfish with excessive radioactive concentrations was caught off the coast of Soma in January 2022, monitoring resumed in the region.</p>

<p>As a consequence of the detected radiation, shipments of black rockfish caught off Fukushima prefecture were halted in February 2022. These shipments have not resumed since.</p>

<p>Authorities suspect that the high radioactivity levels found in the tested specimen indicate it might have escaped from the nuclear plant's port. All seafood species from the areas surrounding the plant are subject to regular radioactivity monitoring.</p>

<p>In August,&nbsp;Japan is set to commence the release of over 1.3 million tonnes of treated water from the Fukushima plant, a process expected to span decades. Radioactive Fukushima fish found ahead of Japan's release of treated water from nuclear plant

Criticism and protests continue over the IAEA's green signal to Japan to discharge treated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. Now in the latest Hong Kong has decided to ban Seafood imports from 10 Japanese prefectures if Tokyo goes ahead with its plan. The move is going to have huge ramifications.

Fukushima water discharge row: Hong Kong to ban sea food imports from Japan

<p>South Korean opposition lawmakers have raised objections over Japan’s plans of releasing Fukushima wastewater into the sea. Reuters quoted a group of South Korean lawmakers visiting Japan as saying on Wednesday that apart from the UN nuclear watchdog, more international organisations should be roped in for reviewing the controversial decision by Tokyo.</p>

<p>This comes after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week approved Japan’s plans of releasing more than a million tonnes of treated radioactive water into the sea, saying they were consistent with international safety standards and the release would have negligible impact on people and the environment.</p>

<p>“We are doing our best to persuade the government and this is why we are visiting Japan right now,”&nbsp;South Korean Democratic Party lawmaker Wi Seong-gon said while speaking at a press conference in Tokyo. His statement was also backed by eight parliamentarians from Japan.</p>

<h2><strong>South Korean President to meet the Japanese PM</strong></h2>

<p>South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday on the sidelines of the ongoing NATO summit in Lithuania. As reported by Reuters, the release of the Fukushima wastewater is expected to be the biggest agenda up for discussion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>South Korean government has so far trodden a fine line on the issue while respecting the decision by IAEA on the one hand, and acknowledging rising concerns at home on the other.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>China issues warning to Japan</strong></h2>

<p>Apart from some lawmakers from South Korea, China has also raised objections over the water release plan. China last week questioned IAEA’s approval to Japan, and said it “cannot be a pass for Japan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea.”&nbsp;</p>

This comes after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week approved Japan’s plans of releasing more than a million tonnes of treated radioactive water into the sea, saying they were consistent with international safety standards and the release would have negligible impact on people and the environment. “We are doing our best to persuade the government and this is why we are visiting Japan right now,” South Korean Democratic Party lawmaker Wi Seong-gon said while speaking at a press conference in Tokyo. His statement was also backed by eight parliamentarians from Japan. South Korean President to meet the Japanese PM South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday on the sidelines of the ongoing NATO summit in Lithuania. As reported by Reuters, the release of the Fukushima wastewater is expected to be the biggest agenda up for discussion. South Korean government has so far trodden a fine line on the issue while respecting the decision by IAEA on the one hand, and acknowledging rising concerns at home on the other. China issues warning to Japan Apart from some lawmakers from South Korea, China has also raised objections over the water release plan. China last week questioned IAEA’s approval to Japan, and said it “cannot be a pass for Japan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea.” Watch: Japan set to release water from the Fukushima nuclear plant × China’s embassy in Japan released a statement, which read, “The IAEA report would not be able to prove the legitimacy and legality of Japan's water discharge or exempt Japan from its ethical responsibilities.” Japan’s advertising campaigns Meanwhile, Japan has planned a slew of advertising measures to convince people about the safety of the treated water. Tokyo has also set up a livestream of fish currently living in the treated water to reassure a sceptical audience that the release would not have an impact on marine life. Fukushima water release: Japan gets nod from UN nuclear watchdog | World News | WION

Japan is set to begin pumping out more than a million tonnes of treated water from the destroyed Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant this summer. The water was distilled after being contaminated from contact with fuel rods at the reactor, destroyed in a 2011 earthquake. tanks on the site now hold about 1.3 million tonnes of radioactive water, enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Here's how Japan plans to deal with the water.

Fukushima nuclear plant water release is safe, says IAEA chief

<p>From&nbsp;live-streamed&nbsp;fish&nbsp;to diplomatic&nbsp;study&nbsp;trips,&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;is waging a concerted&nbsp;campaign&nbsp;to calm controversy before it begins releasing treated water from the&nbsp;Fukushima&nbsp;nuclear plant into the sea.</p>

<p>The problem is massive: the&nbsp;Fukushima&nbsp;Daiichi plant, where several reactors melted down after the 2011 tsunami overwhelmed cooling systems, generates 100,000 litres (3,500 cubic feet) of contaminated water a day.</p>

<p>The mix of groundwater, rainwater that seeps into the area and water used for cooling is treated by plant operator TEPCO and stored on site. But 1.33 million cubic metres later, space has nearly run out.</p>

<p>TEPCO and&nbsp;Japan's government want to release the treated liquid, diluted with seawater, via a pipe extending a kilometre from the coast where the plant sits.</p>

<p>They say filtration removes most radionuclides -- elements that emit radiation -- and renders the water no different to that regularly released by nuclear plants elsewhere, a view endorsed by experts and the UN nuclear watchdog.</p>

<p>The release is a "robust plan," according to Tony Hooker, an associate professor at the University of Adelaide's Centre for Radiation Research, Education and Innovation.</p>

<p>"No environmental or human health impacts are likely to be observed," he said, though he noted there is growing debate about the global practice of ocean dumping.</p>

<p>Claims about risks "are not founded in scientific evidence," added Jim Smith, professor of environmental science at the University of Portsmouth.</p>

<p>"Those making claims... should consider the negative impact of their -- I think scientifically baseless -- claims on the communities in&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;who have been affected by the&nbsp;Fukushima&nbsp;accident," he added.</p>

Japan's scripted campaign to calm controversy over Fukushima nuclear plant

Japan is set to receive a report from a UN nuclear watchdog on Tuesday regarding the release of the Fukushima water in the pacific. Hoping to win the approval, Tokyo will release 1.3 trillion water used in the Fukushima plant.

Japan is set to get the final UN verdict for Fukushima water release

<p>On Tuesday (July 4), the International Atomic Energy Agency approved Japan's plans to release treated radioactive water into the sea from its defunct nuclear reactor in Fukushima. The Fukushima controversy is a hot potato in Asia, with tensions simmering after Japan's plans of releasing radioactive water from the tsunami-wrecked nuclear plant into the sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A nuclear accident occurred at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant nuclear plant during the 2011 tsunami when a large quantity of radioactive material was released, causing significant human suffering.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the tsunami hit, some of the nuclear facility's reactors went into meltdown as the cooling systems were overwhelmed, causing a nuclear accident — the worst since Chornobyl.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the immediate aftermath of the accident, some experts said that the cleanup operation would take decades of work and cost hundreds of billions of dollars. &nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>How much water are we talking about?</strong>&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The water was distilled after being contaminated from contact with fuel rods at the reactor. The tanks on the site now hold about 1.3 million tonnes of radioactive water — enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools, which is massive. It is a mixture of groundwater, rain that seeps into the area, and water used for cooling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) is planning to dilute the water until tritium levels fall below regulatory limits, before pumping it into the ocean from the coastal site. The company has been filtering the contaminated water to remove isotopes, which leaves only tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is hard to separate from the water and commonly remains in wastewater that has been discharged into the sea by nuclear plants globally.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a Scientific American article in 2014, Tritium is considered&nbsp; relatively harmless because it does not emit enough energy to penetrate human skin. But it may lead to cancer risks when ingested. It's not a one or two-day job, as the entire process of water disposal will take decades to complete.&nbsp;</p>

On Tuesday (July 4), the International Atomic Energy Agency approved Japan's plans to release treated radioactive water into the sea from its defunct nuclear reactor in Fukushima.

On Tuesday (July 4), the International Atomic Energy Agency approved Japan's plans to release treated radioactive water into the sea from its defunct nuclear reactor in Fukushima. The Fukushima controversy is a hot potato in Asia, with tensions simmering after Japan's plans of releasing radioactive water from the tsunami-wrecked nuclear plant into the sea. A nuclear accident occurred at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant nuclear plant during the 2011 tsunami when a large quantity of radioactive material was released, causing significant human suffering. After the tsunami hit, some of the nuclear facility's reactors went into meltdown as the cooling systems were overwhelmed, causing a nuclear accident — the worst since Chornobyl. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, some experts said that the cleanup operation would take decades of work and cost hundreds of billions of dollars. Also read: Why has Israel launched massive military operation in West Bank? How much water are we talking about? The water was distilled after being contaminated from contact with fuel rods at the reactor. The tanks on the site now hold about 1.3 million tonnes of radioactive water — enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools, which is massive. It is a mixture of groundwater, rain that seeps into the area, and water used for cooling. Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) is planning to dilute the water until tritium levels fall below regulatory limits, before pumping it into the ocean from the coastal site. The company has been filtering the contaminated water to remove isotopes, which leaves only tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that is hard to separate from the water and commonly remains in wastewater that has been discharged into the sea by nuclear plants globally. According to a Scientific American article in 2014, Tritium is considered relatively harmless because it does not emit enough energy to penetrate human skin. But it may lead to cancer risks when ingested. It's not a one or two-day job, as the entire process of water disposal will take decades to complete. Japan wants to start releasing more than a million tonnes of treated water from the destroyed nuclear power plant this summer. Explained: Japan gets OK to release Fukushima radioactive water. What's the row about?

More than a million cubic metres of treated water from the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe site will be released into the Pacific Ocean, according to a controversial plan that has strained relations with China and other neighbours.

Japan set to release contaminated Fukushima water into Pacific, angering China

The Japanese government will eventually release toxic water accumulated over the course of 40 years through an undersea tunnel. Despite Japan's diplomatic push alarms are being raised by island nations the Pacific Islands forum, a group of 18 Nations urged Japan to consider alternatives.
