<p>The release is a vital step in decommissioning the nuclear plants which saw one of the world's worst nuclear accidents 12 years ago.</p>

<p>International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN's atomic watchdog, has endorsed the plan of release of wastewater. The monitors from the IAEA were on site for the procedure.</p>

<p>TEPCO workers will take water samples later on Thursday.</p>

<p>The release of wastewater has been a controversial topic. Ahead of the release, there was a small protest near the site and about 100 others protested outside TEPCO headquarters in Tokyo.</p>

<p>Since 2011, TEPCO has collected 1.34 million cubic metres of contaminated water as it cooled down the wrecked reactors.</p>

<p>There are four releases of treated water planned from Thursday until March 2024. First discharge will take about 17 days. In this fiscal year, about 5 trillion becquerels - a measure of radioactivity - of tritium will be released, said TEPCO.</p>

<p>Last month, the city announced that it planned to "prohibit the import of aquatic products originating from 10 prefectures" in Japan if the country went ahead with its wastewater discharge.</p>

<p>The announcement followed a similar one by China's General Administration of Customs, which had threatened a blanket ban on all foodstuffs from the areas.</p>

<p>The 10 prefectures named were Tokyo, Fukushima, Chiba, Tochigi, Ibaraki, Gunma, Miyagi, Niigata, Nagano and Saitama.</p>

<p>Before release, the treated water, containing traces of tritium, will be diluted to a concentration that adheres to Japanese safety standards, one-40th of the concentration permitted. This diluted water will then be discharged through an underwater tunnel situated 1 kilometer from the power plant.&nbsp;The plan to release the treated water into the ocean is facing resistance from local fishermen and certain neighboring countries.</p>

<p>His visit to the nuclear plant will be ahead of the government's final verdict on when it will begin discharging treated radioactive water from the tsunami-wrecked power plant into the Pacific Ocean.</p>

<p>"The government is at the final stage of when it has to make a decision," Kishida said in the United States.</p>

<p>During the press briefing, he declined to comment on when the country will begin discharging the water.</p>

<p>Tokyo is planning to release wastewater of same volume&nbsp;as 500 Olympic-size swimming pools from the wrecked facility into the ocean.</p>

<p>The Japanese government will start releasing ‘treated’ radioactive water from its tsunami-hit nuclear power plant as soon as late August, Japanese media reported Monday.</p>

<p>The Japanese daily reported that the process to release about 1.3m tones of treated water will start after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida concludes his meetings with US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol next week in the US.</p>

<p>The Japanese leader is expected to brief both leaders to address questions regarding the safety of the water.</p>

<p>The process of releasing the water is expected to take three to four decades to complete.</p>

<p>Earlier in July, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) gave its go-ahead to Japanese plans to release water into the ocean, off Fukushima.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite concerns raised by local fishermen and some East Asian nations, including China and Taiwan, the UN nuclear watchdog said the treated water doesn’t pose any threat to marine life.</p>

<p>Following that, Japan’s nuclear regulator last month granted approval for the release of water.</p>

Reuters quoted a group of South Korean lawmakers visiting Japan as saying on Wednesday that apart from the UN nuclear watchdog, more international organisations should be roped in for reviewing the controversial decision by Tokyo.</p>

<p>This comes after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last week approved Japan’s plans of releasing more than a million tonnes of treated radioactive water into the sea, saying they were consistent with international safety standards and the release would have negligible impact on people and the environment.</p>

<p>“We are doing our best to persuade the government and this is why we are visiting Japan right now,”&nbsp;South Korean Democratic Party lawmaker Wi Seong-gon said while speaking at a press conference in Tokyo. His statement was also backed by eight parliamentarians from Japan.</p>

<h2><strong>South Korean President to meet the Japanese PM</strong></h2>

<p>South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is scheduled to meet Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Wednesday on the sidelines of the ongoing NATO summit in Lithuania. As reported by Reuters, the release of the Fukushima wastewater is expected to be the biggest agenda up for discussion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>South Korean government has so far trodden a fine line on the issue while respecting the decision by IAEA on the one hand, and acknowledging rising concerns at home on the other.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>China issues warning to Japan</strong></h2>

<p>Apart from some lawmakers from South Korea, China has also raised objections over the water release plan. China last week questioned IAEA’s approval to Japan, and said it “cannot be a pass for Japan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the sea.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>China’s embassy in Japan released a statement, which read, “The IAEA report would not be able to prove the legitimacy and legality of Japan's water discharge or exempt Japan from its ethical responsibilities.”</p>

<h2><strong>Japan’s advertising campaigns</strong></h2>

<p>Meanwhile, Japan has planned a slew of advertising measures to convince people about the safety of the treated water. Tokyo has also set up a livestream of fish currently living in the treated water to reassure a sceptical audience that the release would not have an impact on marine life.</p>

<p>But Hong Kong and China are among the countries that are not convinced. “If the exercise really starts, we’ll be banning a large number of prefectures’ sea products,” said the Hong Kong leader.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The city’s secretary for the environment and ecology has been asked to form a multi-department team to design an action plan for the same. The government will take “decisive action” against the issue, said Lee.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “The catering industry will be affected, but I am sure that they will understand that we’re forced to make a decision because of this unprecedented exercise.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The restrictions could also impact Japan’s economy and fishing communities as Tokyo exported $536 million worth of fishery products to its second-biggest importer, Hong Kong, according to Japanese government statistics.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, in a press briefing, said the IAEA report is not a “free pass” for Japan to release the “problematic water,” reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wang also reiterated that the IAEA report had “failed to fully reflect views from experts” who participated in the review.&nbsp;</p>

<p>China, the biggest market for Japan’s fisheries exports, recently announced a ban on the import of food products from 10 Japanese prefectures citing safety concerns and said it would step up testing for radioactive substances.</p>
