Former Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Tuesday (Mar 12) Felipe Massa was right to take his fight to be recognised as the 2008 world champion to the London High Court.

Lawyers for the Brazilian former Ferrari driver announced on Monday legal action against Formula One Management (FOM), the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) and Ecclestone.

The 42-year-old is also claiming compensation for estimated financial losses of around 64 million pounds ($82 million) plus interest for missing out on the title by a single point to Britain's Lewis Hamilton.

Ecclestone told Reuters by telephone from Brazil that, had he been Massa's manager he would have advised him to take action in England.

"The best thing he could do is sue in England. He wants something straightforward so it will be straightforward. No axe to grind from anybody. So we’ll wait and see," said the 93-year-old Briton.

"It might help him if an English judge comes out and says something that’s in his favour, it would be good for him."

Ecclestone has plenty of experience with the British legal system, most recently last October when he paid 652.6 million pounds but was spared a jail term after pleading guilty to misleading Britain's tax authority about overseas assets.

In 2014 he won a High Court case brought against him by German media company Constantin Medien who had sought $100 million in damages following the sale of a stake in the sport eight years earlier.

Massa's claim has made much of an Ecclestone quote to the German website F1 Insider stating that the Brazilian should have been world champion in 2008 and was "deprived of the title he deserved" by a Singapore Grand Prix scandal.

Ecclestone repeated last year's assertion that he had no recollection of saying that and said he had tried, in vain, to find a recording.

Massa was leading that race from pole position when compatriot Nelson Piquet Jr crashed his Renault into the wall on lap 14 of 61, triggering the safety car.

Piquet's team mate Fernando Alonso went on to win, while Massa failed to score after a bungled pitstop.

Reserve driver Oliver Bearman has been announced as his replacement and will pair up with Charles Leclerc for the rest of the weekend.&nbsp;

"As from FP3 and for the rest of this weekend, he will be replaced by reserve driver Oliver Bearman. Oliver will therefore take no further part in this round of the F2 Championship," Ferrari said in a statement.

Embattled Red Bull boss Christian Horner blames media and F1 officials for ongoing controversy

A Ferrari stolen from Austrian former racing driver Gerhard Berger after the San Marino Grand Prix in 1995 has been recovered, Britain's Metropolitan Police said Monday (Mar 4). 
 
Berger and fellow F1 star Jean Alesi lost their private cars on the same day in April 1995 to car thieves working near the circuit at Imola.

The Austrian explained that his red F512M Testarossa had disappeared from outside his hotel.

London's Metropolitan Police said they launched an investigation in January after receiving a report from Ferrari, which had carried out checks on a car being bought by a US buyer via a UK broker in 2023, that revealed it was stolen.

Officers traced the car's background within four days, finding out that it had been shipped to Japan shortly after being stolen from Berger and then brought to the UK in late 2023.

"We worked quickly with partners including the National Crime Agency, as well as Ferrari and international car dealerships, and this collaboration was instrumental in understanding the vehicle's background and stopping it from leaving the country," he added.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported the allegation of "inappropriate behaviour" by a female member of staff for the British-based team earlier this month.

Asked about the accusations,&nbsp;Horner, 50, told De Telegraaf: "I completely deny these claims."

Formula One chiefs had said they wanted the issue resolved at the "earliest opportunity".

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff described the investigation as "an issue for all of Formula One" and called for transparency.

Under&nbsp;Horner's guidance, Red Bull have become the dominant force in Formula One, with Max Verstappen winning the past three drivers' titles.

World champion Max Verstappen has given his support to rival Carlos Sainz after the Ferrari driver was hit with a ten-place grid penalty at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Sainz's car hit a loose drain cover in Thursday's abandoned first practice and suffered damage. Ferrari had to change a host of power unit components in order for the Spaniard to continue.

But with Sainz using his third energy store of the season, one more than is allowed by regulations, he was handed the penalty - despite not being at fault himself. Race stewards had said that sanction was mandatory but there have been reports that some teams may have lobbied to ensure there was no leniency.&nbsp;

"Personally, I do think it's very harsh on Carlos, but in this political environment that we are in, of course every team thinks about themselves, and they're of course going to say 'yes, take the penalty'," said Verstappen.

Sainz finished second in qualifying on Friday but will start in 11th place on the grid in Saturday's race.

Red Bull's Verstappen suggested the rules need to be re-examined.

"It's the same if you get taken out, and you have a big accident; you can lose parts, engine, energy store, these kinds of things," Verstappen explained.

"First of all, that needs to change so that these things can be taken into consideration, that if you can take a free, let's say, penalty or not. "And besides that, I think the teams should not be allowed to have a say in these kinds of things because, for sure, they're going to vote against that," he said.

Sainz was unsurprisingly bitter about the punishment. "There was clearly a safety issue with the track. That safety issue destroyed my car. My mechanics had to invest five hours in putting together a completely new car and, on top of that, we get a 10-place penalty for something that we have nothing to do (with)," he said.

"Just disappointed. At the same time, not surprised because there's been many cases this year that I think the sport has proven that it can do things a lot better. "I'm surprised the governing body doesn't have the power, in cases of force majeure, to let's say overrule a bit in this kind of situation, where it's so clear that it's completely out of the team's control, completely out of the driver's control. "I don't know. The rules, the governing body, the teams, I don't know. I expected more from the sport in this situation," he said.

The Dutchman has won 17 races in a record-breaking season as he clinched his third straight championship. "It was enjoyable out there. I think we maximised today. I think the whole weekend so far we have been lacking a bit of one lap performance and that was quite clear," said the Dutchman.

"I hope tomorrow in the race we are good on the tyres again and can work our way forward," he added. Leclerc had mixed feelings after his run in the final qualifying segment.

The second practice session had been held in front of empty stands and did not finish until 4am in the morning local time but the crowd were more than happy to see F1's stars battle for grid position at midnight. In a statement, the FIA said: "The ISC (International&nbsp;Sporting&nbsp;Code) had previously determined that the maximum&nbsp;fine&nbsp;amount that the stewards can impose is 250,000&nbsp;euros.

"This amount has not been reviewed or amended for at least the last 12 years and does not reflect the current needs of motor sport." The maximum&nbsp;fine&nbsp;in all other FIA world championships was set at 750,000&nbsp;euros.

In other decisions, the WMSC said it was banning fireworks at all race meetings.&nbsp; Flares have been set off, creating smoke that has drifted across the circuit at some events while spectators at the 2022 Dutch Grand Prix threw fireworks on to the circuit.&nbsp;

"The world council therefore approved new provision and definition in the ISC prohibiting the unauthorised possession and use of pyrotechnics at FIA competitions," the statement said.&nbsp;

The decisions follow increasing concerns following recent events including the Qatar Grand Prix where seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ran across a 'live' track after he had crashed.

He was fined 50,000&nbsp;euros&nbsp;with 25,000 suspended. The FIA said it was reviewing that decision, bearing in mind Hamilton's status as a role model for the sport.
