Liverpool rediscovered lost form and seized the initiative against RB Leipzig in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash by cruising to a 2-0 win in a chilly Budapest on Tuesday.

Clinical early second-half strikes from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, both courtesy of dreadful defensive errors, proved decisive and leave the German side facing a formidable task in the return leg on March 10.

The win moves Jurgen Klopp's men to the brink of the Champions League quarter-finals and also ends a run of three straight defeats that has left the English champions 13 points behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League.

"It was a game we wanted it was a game we needed tonight," Klopp told BT Sport afterwards.

"Leipzig can be a real monster. The way they play in the Bundesliga they overrun teams, they can be really physical in everything and tonight we controlled them in an exceptional way.

"They had their moments because of the quality they have but we controlled the game so tonight I think we got the result we deserved," he said.

The first leg was moved from Leipzig to the Hungarian capital due to Germany's strict Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Despite the enforced relocation,&nbsp;Julian Nagelsmann's side, on a four-game winning streak at home where they are second behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, started briskly and almost went ahead on four minutes.

Marauding left-back Angelino teed up fellow Spaniard Dani Olmo for a close-range diving header past Alisson but the effort only rattled the post.

Soon after Angelino again exploited space on the left but his left-footed volley skewed harmlessly across the goalmouth.

Instead it was Liverpool, striving to reverse their slump and badly in need of a Champions League lift, who gradually created more chances, often benefitting from loose defending.

First, Salah, busy throughout, forced a block from Leipzig's Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi on the quarter hour.

Ten minutes later Mane, outjumping Nordi Mukiele, headed a Firmino cross just over after the Brazilian striker and Salah had combined well on the right.

Shortly before half-time, Andy Robertson shaved the crossbar when his lob from distance almost caught out the Budapest-born Gulacsi dashing back after making a clearance outside his box.

Although Leipzig perked up on the restart with Alisson Becker saving from Christopher Nkunku, the German side, were made to pay for two calamitous mistakes early in the second half.

In the 53rd minute, Salah pounced on a sloppy back-pass by Austrian midfielder Marcel Sabitzer and ran unchallenged to smoothly slot past Gulacsi.

Five minutes later, Mane doubled Liverpool's lead in similar fashion, smartly finishing after Mukiele had scuffed a clearance.

"We made two huge mistakes which would be punished at any level," Nagelsmann told DAZN.&nbsp;

"Mistakes happen, we didn't play badly and we have to live with the result, we have to score twice just to take the game (return leg) to extra time, but we will try to do our best," he said.

With Swedish playmaker Emil Forsberg sidelined by a knee injury and lacking a talismanic goalscorer, Leipzig rarely threatened to pull one back.

Liverpool were left to cruise to victory, keeping alive their hopes of silverware via Champions League glory this season despite their domestic woes.

"We were for two years really good and then this year we had some problems," said Klopp.

"That's absolutely normal and I have no problem with that. It's just a lot of people probably expected us to slip again because of the situation and the boys didn't," he said.

Upamecano joining Bayern from Leipzig

Manchester United's faltering Premier League title challenge suffered another blow in a 1-1 draw at struggling West Brom, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a hat-trick in Arsenal's 4-2 win against Leeds on Sunday.

United have dropped points in five of their last seven league games to allow Manchester City to pull seven points clear, with a game in hand.

A point was enough to nudge Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men back above Leicester into second on goal difference.

But that was of little consolation to United against a West Brom side that had conceded 24 goals in taking just one point from their previous seven home games.

Indeed, it was Sam Allardyce's men who had the better chances to win the game and give their dwindling hopes of beating the drop a boost.

United made the worst possible start when Conor Gallagher swung in a cross and Mbaye Diagne outmuscled Victor Lindelof to power home a header after just 80 seconds.

"We gave ourselves a tough start," said Solskjaer, whose side have fallen behind in eight of their 12 away league games this season.

"You've got 90 odd minutes to make amends so there is no need to panic but I didn't feel we built that momentum until too late in the first half.

"Second half there was only one-way traffic but still there were a couple of moments where we could have lost the game."

United struggled to make the most of their territorial dominance until Bruno Fernandes produced a moment of magic with a dipping volley on his weaker left foot a minute before half-time.

Sam Johnstone denied Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay had an effort cleared off the line as United pressed for a winner after the break.

But it was Diagne who twice should have won the game late on as he was denied when one-on-one with David de Gea before blazing an enticing low cross over the bar.

Johnstone was required once more deep into stoppage time when he tipped Harry Maguire's header onto the post.

<h2>- Aubameyang propels Arsenal -</h2>

At the Emirates Stadium, Aubameyang scored his first ever Premier League hat-trick to get the Gunners back on track after two successive defeats and three games without a win.

Aubameyang has endured a difficult season marred by poor form and his mother's illness, which prompted him to take a leave of absence recently.

The Arsenal captain struck in the 13th minute when he skipped away from Luke Ayling and fired low past Illan Meslier.

Aubameyang converted a 41st-minute penalty after Meslier lost possession and then fouled Bukayo Saka.

Hector Bellerin made it three on the stroke of half-time when his shot beat the hapless Meslier's weak attempted save at his near post.

Aubameyang completed his hat-trick in the 47th minute with a diving header from Emile Smith Rowe's cross for his 11th goal of the season.

Pascal Struijk's 58th-minute header and Helder Costa's strike in the 69th minute came too late for Marcelo Bielsa's men as Arsenal climbed above Leeds into 10th place.

"The hat-trick means a lot. It's been a tough time for me," Aubameyang said.

"Everyone was giving a lot of love to me, my mum and my family. I have to say thank you to everyone at the club and the fans."

Everton missed the chance to move level with neighbours Liverpool in fourth as they were well beaten 2-0 by Fulham.

Josh Maja scored twice for the visitors at Goodison Park to end Fulham's 12-game winless league run.

Scott Parker's men still face an uphill task to survive, but close the gap on Newcastle, who travel to Chelsea on Monday, to seven points.

Wolves moved 12 points clear of the drop zone after coming from behind for a 2-1 win that extended Southampton's six-game losing streak in the league.

The Saints had beaten Nuno Espirito Santo's men to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals in midweek and made a promising start when Danny Ings converted Stuart Armstrong's cross.

But Ruben Neves' penalty and Pedro Neto's strike just past the hour earned only a second Wolves win in 11 league games.

Ilaix had just set up the opening goal against Alaves on Saturday when he was congratulated by his 33-year-old captain, whose task it is on Tuesday to lead this youthful Barca to an unfancied victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16.

From nurturing the next generation of Barcelona talents to confronting one of Europe's richest, most ambitious clubs, the fork in the road for Messi's future is becoming clear.

PSG may not be Messi's preferred choice this summer, especially if Manchester City decide the Argentinian is the final piece of the jigsaw for a team already ahead of the rest in the Premier League.

But the two clubs remain his most realistic destinations, both united in representing almost everything that staying put at Barcelona would not. Clubs ready, in theory, to win the biggest trophies immediately and able to spend whatever it takes to do it.

Meanwhile Messi's suspicions in August, when he sent the burofax requesting he depart for free, have arguably been confirmed. Barcelona appear neither ready to win the biggest trophies immediately nor able to spend what is needed to do it.

As it stands, Koeman's team sit third in La Liga, eight points behind Atletico Madrid. They were beaten by Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup and trail Sevilla 2-0 after the semi-final first leg of the Copa del Rey.

And yet while nobody knows what Messi will decide, perhaps not even Messi -- who told La Sexta in December he "wouldn't be right to say what I'm going to do because I don't know either" -- there is reason to think Barca's chances have not only survived the disappointments but been improved in spite of them.

<h2>- Barcelona stabilised -</h2>

When Messi explained to goal.com why he wanted to go last summer, he reiterated his desire for a "winning project" but also said he "wanted to live my last years in football happily". He admitted how hard it was to tell his family they were leaving.

For the first few weeks of the season, he seemed distracted, like a player giving his all while simultaneously wishing he was somewhere else.&nbsp;

Yet Barcelona stabilised under Koeman -- never perfect and always far from the finished article -- but with a renewed sense of purpose emerging.

Koeman has enabled struggling players to flourish and promising youngsters to shine.

Pedri, the 18-year-old attacking midfielder, has stood out, his eye for a pass chiming with Messi's quickness of thought.

"In Pedri, Messi has found a reason to enjoy the game again," wrote Diario Sport in January.

Ansu Fati sparkled before injury struck in November while&nbsp;in defence, the 21-year-old Ronald Araujo, who is also expected to miss the first leg with an ankle problem, emerged as Koeman's most reliable central defender.

Frenkie de Jong has excelled in recent weeks and Ousmane Dembele is enjoying his best spell at the club so far.&nbsp;Messi, like the team, has looked happy.

"He is focused, he is happy, he has found that ruthless streak again," said Koeman on Saturday.

Excitement may prove misplaced or, at least, premature given there are no guarantees Barcelona's depleted defence will not cave against PSG and Kylian Mbappe, even with Neymar absent.

Another humbling in Europe may not undo the good work Koeman has done but it would serve as a painful reminder to Messi of past failures and ground to make up.

A positive result could do the opposite, providing affirmation of steps already taken and evidence that a move even to the richest clubs would bring no guarantees.

Most importantly, there is an opportunity to rubberstamp what Koeman has started and to confirm the growing sense of a club slowly rebuilding again.

With presidential elections due next month, the reality is Koeman may not see this transition through but Messi can decide if his role in any revival will be fleeting or more fundamental.

"There is only one person who can choose his future and it is him," said Koeman. "I would like him to stay for many more years and I'm trying to make sure he is happy like he is now. But his future is in his hands."

RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann is refusing to read too much into the Liverpool's poor recent results ahead of Tuesday's Champions League showdown in Budapest.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool have won just three of their last 12 games and fly to Budapest for the last 16, first-leg tie against Leipzig on the back of three straight Premier League defeats.

On Saturday, Klopp admitted he does not think Liverpool can defend their Premier League title by closing the 13-point gap on leaders Manchester City after his side's 3-1 defeat at Leicester City.

In contrast, Leipzig are only second in the Bundesliga behind world champions Bayern Munich after winning their last three league games.&nbsp;

However, Leipzig boss Nagelsmann says Liverpool's poor Premier League form counts for little in Budapest.

"I don't think I need to warn my side about facing a wounded boxer - they know (Liverpool) is a world-class team," Nagelsmann told reports Monday.

"They don't have the results crisis in the Champions League, but in the Premier League.

"It's a completely different competition, they have crossed off the (Premier League) title and their focus is now only on the Champions League, where they can still win a title.

"They will try to shake off the negative things," Nagelsmann added with the first leg moved from Leipzig to Budapest due to Germany's Covid-19 travel restrictions.

"We have been warned - it'll come down to form on the day."

On Tuesday, Nagelsmann will be without Swedish playmaker Emil Forsberg, who has failed to recover from a knee injury.

"He, unfortunately, won't make it - he still has problems changing direction when running," Nagelsmann revealed.

With Forsberg out, Dani Olmo is likely to play in the attacking midfield with Yussuf Poulsen and Christopher Nkunku up front for Leipzig.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday said that he strongly backs an expanded Club World Cup in a bid to boost international competitions between clubs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Football chiefs in England have penned a letter to the bosses of social media giants Twitter and Facebook calling for action to tackle "havens of abuse" after a series of online racist incidents.&nbsp;&nbsp;

An open letter to the platforms’ chief executives Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg has asked them&nbsp;"for reasons of basic human decency" to address the long-term problem.&nbsp;

Swansea's Yan Dhanda was the latest to face racial abuse on social media platform following his team's defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup. A number of players including the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Axel&nbsp;Tuanzebe&nbsp;along with Chelsea's Reece James have been subjected to racial abuse on social media in recent weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Social media platform Instagram on Wednesday announced new measures in an attempt to tackle online abuses following a series of "horrifying” racist attacks on Premier League footballers. The likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Axel&nbsp;Tuanzebe&nbsp;from Manchester United, as well as Chelsea's Reece James have been subjected to online abuses in recent weeks.&nbsp;

The photo-blogging platform said that it would remove accounts sending abusive messages.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Fadzai&nbsp;Madzingira, content policy manager at Instagram's parent company Facebook, told Britain's Press Association news agency she was "horrified" at the vitriol directed at footballers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Currently, we will set a specific ban or what we call a block for a set amount of time when someone violates those rules and we extend that time should they continue to do so," she said.&nbsp;

"What we're announcing today is that we're taking tougher measures on people who violate those rules in Instagram direct messaging, so instead of just extending the time, we'll be removing the accounts altogether.&nbsp;

Atletico Madrid's home match against Chelsea in the Champions League last-16 has been moved from Spain to Bucharest as a result of coronavirus restrictions, UEFA confirmed on Wednesday.

The first-leg tie will be staged at the Arena Nationala in the Romanian capital.

Chelsea said in a statement on their website that the date of the match, February 23, and the kick-off time (2000 GMT) would remain the same.

The second leg is scheduled to take place at Stamford Bridge in London on March 17.

It is the latest European match to be switched to a different venue as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Spanish government on Tuesday extended a ban on arrivals by air from Britain, Brazil and South Africa until March 2 over new variants.

Only legal residents or nationals of Spain and the neighbouring micro-state of Andorra are currently allowed in on flights from those countries.

In changes previously announced, Manchester City's first leg of their Champions League tie against Borussia Moenchengladbach will be played in Budapest while Liverpool's match against RB Leipzig has also been relocated to the Hungarian capital.

The Champions League, Europe's top club competition, was heavily disrupted by the pandemic last season.

It was placed on hold when sport across Europe was halted in March.&nbsp;

UEFA then took the decision to complete the competition as a "Final Eight" tournament in Lisbon in August, without spectators. Bayern Munich beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final.

There have also been changes in this season's Europa League as a result of virus rules.

Arsenal and Manchester United have had the first legs of their last-32 matches moved.

The Gunners will take on Benfica in Rome, while United's meeting with Real Sociedad has been switched from San Sebastian to Turin.

Bayern Munich CEO's 'Messi of Africa' praise for Mohamed Salah fuels transfer speculation

Premier League referee Mike Dean will not officiate this weekend after he and his family received online death threats following two controversial incidents.

The 52-year-old referee sent off West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek for catching Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic with his elbow on Saturday, days after dismissing Southampton defender Jan Bednarek at Old Trafford.

Dean reviewed the incidents on the pitchside monitor after consulting VAR before making his decisions. Both have since been overturned on appeal.

The referee asked to be stood down from the next round of Premier League fixtures and was not included on the match officials list for the forthcoming weekend, though he will be in charge of Wednesday's FA Cup tie between Leicester and Brighton.

Professional Game Match Officials Board managing director and former referee Mike Riley offered Dean the organisation's full support.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said the threats to Dean and his family were "inexcusable" and called for more action from social media companies.

Soucek also spoke out against the abuse levelled at Dean, tweeting that decisions "made on the pitch should stay on the pitch".

"There is no place for abuse of any kind," he said. "It is in the past and I'm now focused on the rest of the season."

Premier League managers mobilised in support of Dean, with Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder labelling the abuse "inhumane".

"Mike Dean is an honourable referee and a decent guy, and these guys are doing their best, as the players and coaches are," he said.

"They don't deserve it. It's disgusting, the individuals need nailing and I wish I could nail them in my way, but I won't be allowed to.

"We've all been subjected to the abuse and I think it's cowardly, disgusting and inhumane. It isn't football and it isn't life. No-one should be able to get away with it."

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho said that criticism of officials like Dean on a professional level was inevitable, but threatening his family was completely unacceptable.

"I think something has to be done. Because one thing is professional life and what we do in our professional lives, and the success we have, the mistakes we make, the frustrations we have," Mourinho said.

"Another thing is to go to the private life and go to the social life. And then, of course, something has to be done."

Tigres set up a potential Club World Cup final date with Bayern Munich after seeing off Palmeiras 1-0 in Sunday's last four clash at the tournament in Qatar.

Andre-Pierre Gignac's penalty eight minutes after the break was enough for the Mexican side to beat Brazilian giants Palmeiras, who claimed their second Copa Libertadores title last month but were subdued at the Education City Stadium.

Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton was the star of the first half with two superb saves, but he could do nothing to stop Gignac's powerful spot-kick after Luan yanked back Carlos Gonzalez in the box.

Gignac's winning strike made it three goals in two games for the former Marseille forward after his brace in Tigres' 2-1 win over Ulsan Hyundai in the previous round and made his side the first CONCACAF team to reach the Club World Cup final.

Tigres will likely face Bayern in Thursday's final, with the European champions overwhelming favourites in their semi-final with Egypt's Al Ahly on Monday.

Defeat will be disappointing for Palmeiras, who are Brazil's most successful club with 10 national titles and were expected to be Bayern's principal rivals but fell with a whimper at the first hurdle.

Earlier reigning Qatari champions Al Duhail defeated Asian Champions League winners Ulsan Hyundai 3-1 in the fifth place play-off.

Al Duhail, who lost 1-0 to Al Ahly in the quarter-finals, took the lead midway through the first half with a goal from Brazilian forward Edmilson Junior.

Yoon Bit-garam levelled on 62 minutes for South Korean side Ulsan.

Substitute Mohammed Muntari's fine finish put the hosts back in front four minutes later and Almoez Ali, the 2019 Asian Cup player of the tournament, added a third goal in the closing stages.

Tigres beat Palmeiras to reach Club World Cup final

Zlatan Ibrahimovic broke the 500-mark for career club goals with a brace on Sunday as AC Milan held top spot in Serie A with a 4-0 win over lowly Crotone.

"It's difficult to be surprised by Ibrahimovic," said Milan coach Stefano Pioli of the 39-year-old who is powering his team's bid for a first 'Scudetto' since 2011.

Milan moved back two points in front of city rivals Inter Milan who had pulled ahead after a 2-0 win over Fiorentina on Friday.

Champions Juventus are a further five back in third after beating Roma 2-0 on Saturday.&nbsp;

The capital side dropped to fourth equal on points with city rivals Lazio who beat Cagliari 1-0.

Ibrahimovic opened the scoring on the half hour at the San Siro after combining with Rafael Leao for his 500th strike with nine different clubs.

And the Swede brought his tally to 501 in the 64th minute, finishing off a Theo Hernandez cross for his 83rd Milan goal.

"To hold up at this level means you're an exceptional professional and he's helped by a physique that few have," continued Pioli.&nbsp;

"He's a champion, an athlete who has great motivation, he takes care of his body scrupulously. Sometimes he's tired, but he never fails."

Ante Rebic turned the game into a comprehensive win with a quick-fire brace of his own past Crotone goalkeeper Alex Cordaz.

The Croatian headed in a Hakan Calhanoglu corner in the 69th minute and then seconds later turned in a rebound after Cordaz kept out an Ibrahimovic strike.

"The Scudetto? The decisive matches will come later, now we have to withstand all the pressures which is a privilege to have," continued Pioli.

"The top seven are all capable of fighting for the title and the first four places.&nbsp;

"It's not yet time to look too much at the table, a challenging period will come with many matches and the Europa League is about to start again."

<h2>- 'My job is to score' -</h2>

Ibrahimovic showed his incredible form 22 years after making his professional debut for Swedish club Malmo, scoring his first goal in October 1999.

"It means that I have scored a few goals in my career," said the Swede, who was substituted off with 15 minutes to go.&nbsp;

"The important thing is to continue to help the team in the best possible way. My job is to score and create situations to score."

Ibrahimovic reached the landmark in 825 games, having played for three Serie A sides -- Juventus, Inter and Milan -- as well as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Barcelona, Ajax and Los Angeles Galaxy.

He has now scored 396 league goals, 57 in European competitions and 48 in cup games.

The former Sweden striker returned to Milan in January 2020 and has scored 27 goals in 37 appearances since.

He has scored 14 league goals in 11 games this season having been sidelined with coronavirus and injury, two short of top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, who turned 36 on Friday.

With 116 games for Sweden and 62 goals, Ibrahimovic is the all-time leading scorer for the Swedish national team.

<h2>- Immobile lifts Lazio -</h2>

In Rome, Ciro Immobile scored the only goal as Lazio pushed their winning run to six league games to move ahead of Napoli and level with Roma.

Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno kept the relegation-threatened Sardinians in the game for an hour, denying an Immobile header, and getting down to clear a Luis Alberto volley.

But he could do nothing to stop Immobile latching on to Sergej Milinkovic-Savic's nodded cross with the Italian finishing off with his left foot.

Last season's European golden shoe winner has now 14 goals this campaign, equal with Ibrahimovic and Inter's Romelu Lukaku.

In the Emilia-Romagna derby, Musa Barrow scored twice within the first half hour with Riccardo Orsolini adding a third in injury time as Bologna got back winning 3-0 against Parma.

Bologna move up to 12th with Parma stuck 19th.

Champions Juventus are a further five back in third after beating Roma 2-0 on Saturday. "To hold up at this level means you're an exceptional professional and he's helped by a physique that few have," continued Pioli. "He's a champion, an athlete who has great motivation, he takes care of his body scrupulously. Sometimes he's tired, but he never fails." Ante Rebic turned the game into a comprehensive win with a quick-fire brace of his own past Crotone goalkeeper Alex Cordaz. "The top seven are all capable of fighting for the title and the first four places. "It's not yet time to look too much at the table, a challenging period will come with many matches and the Europa League is about to start again." - 'My job is to score' - Ibrahimovic showed his incredible form 22 years after making his professional debut for Swedish club Malmo, scoring his first goal in October 1999. "It means that I have scored a few goals in my career," said the Swede, who was substituted off with 15 minutes to go. "The important thing is to continue to help the team in the best possible way. My job is to score and create situations to score." Ibrahimovic reached the landmark in 825 games, having played for three Serie A sides -- Juventus, Inter and Milan -- as well as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Barcelona, Ajax and Los Angeles Galaxy. - Immobile lifts Lazio - In Rome, Ciro Immobile scored the only goal as Lazio pushed their winning run to six league games to move ahead of Napoli and level with Roma.

'Exceptional' Ibrahimovic breaks 500-goal mark to keep AC Milan top

Manchester City left Liverpool's title defence in tatters as Ilkay Gundogan's double and two costly mistakes from Alisson Becker inspired the Premier League leaders' dazzling 4-1 win, while Harry Kane starred in Tottenham's 2-0 victory against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Inspired by Gundogan's goals and Phil Foden's stylish display, City moved 10 points clear of fourth-placed Liverpool after their first win at Anfield since 2003.

The troubled champions were blown away by Pep Guardiola's side, who became the first team to score four times in a league game away to Liverpool in 12 years.

City hold a five-point lead over second placed Manchester United and have a game in hand on their local rivals as they eye a third title in four seasons.

They have won 14 successive games in all competitions to equal the record for an English top-flight club, set by Preston in 1892 and Arsenal in 1987.

"We have done brilliantly so I cannot deny how happy we are. To come here and finally win, it's very important," Guardiola said.

"I'm so grateful to my players but this is now the past. In February no one is champions."

Liverpool are in disarray after losing three consecutive home league games for the first time since 1963.

They have won just two of their last nine league matches as injuries and fatigue take their toll.

"We made two massive mistakes, that is clear. There is not a real explanation. Maybe he had cold feet? It sounds funny but it could be," said coach Jurgen Klopp of the two poor clearances from Alisson that led to City goals.

"They used them and 3-1 down in a game like this, when you are that long level, it is tough to take."

Gundogan blasted a 38th minute penalty into the Kop after Fabinho's trip on Raheem Sterling.

But the Germany midfielder got back in Guardiola's good books in the 49th minute with a close-range finish after Foden's shot was parried into his path.

Liverpool were gifted a penalty in the 63rd minute after City defender Ruben Dias allowed Mohamed Salah to latch onto Trent Alexander-Arnold's long pass and responded by pulling him down.

Salah took the penalty himself, showing Gundogan how to do it as he shot high into the net for his 22nd goal this season.

Alisson made an even bigger mistake than Dias in the 73rd minute when the Liverpool keeper's sloppy pass was intercepted by Foden.

Foden made a superb run through the heart of the Liverpool defence before cutting back for Gundogan to finish from virtually on the line.

Alisson's nightmare wasn't over and in the 76th minute he again conceded possession with a woeful pass.

This time, Bernardo Silva was the beneficiary and he chipped a cross to Sterling, who headed into the empty net.

England midfielder Foden capped the rout in the 83rd minute, cut in from the right to blast past the shell-shocked Alisson.

<h2>- Kane back in style -</h2>

Jose Mourinho admitted Tottenham "depend" on Kane after the Tottenham striker delivered a dominant display on his return from injury.

Mourinho's side had lost their previous three Premier League games to put their top four hopes in peril.

Revitalised by Kane's earlier than expected return from an ankle problem suffered against Liverpool, Tottenham got back to winning ways just when the under-fire Mourinho needed it most.

Kane's 20th goal in all competitions this season took him to 208 goals -- level in joint second place alongside Bobby Smith in the club's all-time scoring list.

The England captain's milestone goal was followed by a Son Heung-min strike moments later.

Chelsea made it three successive wins for new boss Thomas Tuchel as Jorginho's penalty clinched a 2-1 victory at Sheffield United.

Tuchel, who drew his first game in charge after replacing Frank Lampard, watched as Mason Mount fired Chelsea ahead from Timo Werner's 43rd minute pass.

Antonio Rudiger's 55th minute own goal didn't faze Chelsea and Jorginho netted from the spot three minutes later after Blades keeper Aaron Ramsdale fouled Werner.

Tuchel's team are up to fifth place, just one point behind Liverpool.

"The type of football is physical and tougher and there is a lot of quality. During matches it never stops," said Tuchel of his early days in England.

Leicester remain third after a 0-0 draw at Wolves.

Four-goal Man City crush Liverpool, Kane stars for Spurs

Defending champion Novak Djokovic said he played "flawless and dominant" tennis to blast past Frenchman Jeremy Chardy Monday in an ominous start to his bid for an unprecedented ninth Australian Open title.

The Serbian world number one, who clinched his 17th Grand Slam in last year's gripping Melbourne final against Dominic Thiem, wasted little energy in the 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 romp in just 91 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

The writing was on the wall with Chardy failing to take a set off the Serb in 13 previous meetings.

"It felt great. I mean, I started the match really well, broke his serve and was pretty much a flawless match," he said, adding that he felt "relaxed and comfortable".&nbsp;

"Especially on my service games, I was very dominant. Just overall, I think every shot that I executed tonight was really good and on a high level.

"I'm very pleased with the way I opened up the Australian Open."

Djokovic, chasing an 18th Slam crown to close in on the 20 held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, has likened his relationship with the Australian Open to "a love affair".

And he clearly enjoyed himself, dishing up a masterclass for the socially-distanced fans in the stadium.

"It feels great, so great to see people back in the stadium," he said.

"I'm really glad to see a lot of people actually -- this is the most I've seen on a tennis court in 12 months."

"Sometimes we take these things (crowds) for granted, but very very grateful to see you all," he added.

<h2>- 'Sticking to the game plan' -</h2>

The 33-year-old broke Chardy in the opening game and was never troubled, racing through the set in 32 minutes, with the Frenchman winning just two points off the Serb's service game.

It was similar scenario in a lopsided second set, which only lasted 22 minutes, as Chardy struggled to cope with the ferocity of Djokovic's serving, which routinely clocked in at more than 200 kph (124 mph).

Chardy, who made the semi-finals of the warm-up Murray River Open tournament, surrendered meekly, with Djokovic winning the match with his ninth ace.

"Of course, you are expected to win most of the times as a top player and kind of ease your way through the first rounds," said Djokovic.

"But, you know, I don't see it that way, obviously. You still have to do your job on the court. So I was sticking to the game plan."

The Serb has won a record eight times in Melbourne, the scene of his maiden Grand Slam triumph in 2008, and is unbeaten on the famous blue courts since his shock defeat by South Korea's Hyeon Chung in the 2018 round of 16.

He next faces American Frances Tiafoe in a tricky side of the draw with 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka and former world number three Milos Raonic potential obstacles en route to the quarter-finals.

"It's the first time I will face him, he's definitely one of the up-and-coming American tennis players," Djokovic said of Tiafoe. "I'm looking forward to the next challenge."

'Flawless' Djokovic crushes Chardy in Australian Open warning

Pep Guardiola admits he wrote off Manchester City's title prospects earlier this season, but the Premier League leaders are now three points clear after a 2-0 win at Burnley on Wednesday.

Guardiola's side had watched Manchester United draw level on points with them on Tuesday after their bitter rivals crushed Southampton 9-0.

But City underlined their determination to hold onto top spot with a composed, mature display at Turf Moor.

Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring after a mistake from Burnley keeper Nick Pope and Raheem Sterling grabbed the second before half-time.

After a spluttering start to the season that threatened to derail their title hopes, City, who have a game in hand on second placed United, are in pole position to dethrone champions Liverpool.

So bleak was City's position at one stage that Guardiola expected to be thinking about qualifying for the Europa League rather than winning the title.

"We have to do our job. It's a big mistake to think about other sides," Guardiola said of the title race.

"When we were 12th we were thinking forget about the Premier League, if we can achieve being in Europa League next season.&nbsp;

"It's not about runs of games, statistics. It's always next game, next game."

City head into Sunday's crucial clash at Liverpool -- who face Brighton later on Wednesday -- on a club record run of 13 successive victories in all competitions, including nine in the league.

Arsenal were the last English top-flight side to win 13 consecutive games in all competitions in 2002.

With Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne still sidelined by injuries, City's surge to the top is even more remarkable.&nbsp;

"Strikers need goals for their confidence. Gabriel Jesus played really good," Guardiola said.

Last crowned champions in 2019, City are unbeaten in 20 matches in all competitions stretching back to November and have conceded just four goals during that run.

It is City's miserly defence that has been the key to their resurgence following the signing of Ruben Dias from Benfica.

Their latest rock-solid effort at the back equalled the club league record of six consecutive clean-sheets.

Burnley are 16th after a second successive defeat, but they remain eight points above the relegation zone.

<h2>- Ruthless City -</h2>

Guardiola made five changes from last weekend's win against Sheffield United, with Sterling and John Stones back in the starting line-up.

Aguero is several weeks from returning to action after recently emerging from coronavirus quarantine, leaving Jesus to shoulder the burden of leading City's attack.

Finally rising to that challenge, Jesus struck in the third minute with a clinical close-range header after Pope tamely parried Bernardo Silva's shot into the Brazilian's path.

It was a bad mistake from Pope but Jesus wasn't complaining about the gift.

After scoring just once in 12 games, the 23-year-old, who hit the winner against Sheffield United, has now netted three times in his last four appearances.

City had never lost in the 37 previous league games that Jesus had scored in and Guardiola's side always looked likely to extend that streak as they dominated possession.

Probing away with ruthless efficiency, City's pressure was rewarded with a second goal in the 38th minute.

Mahrez fed Ilkay Gundogan down the right flank and the German's superb low cross reached Sterling, who slotted home from close-range for his 10th club goal of the season.

Burnley didn't have a single shot in the first half and that gulf in class remained obvious after the break.

Gundogan has made a habit of scoring eye-catching goals in recent weeks and he wasn't far away from another as his 20-yard blast fizzed just over.

Sterling was denied by Pope's out-stretched boot after surging clear of the Burnley defence.

Ederson escaped with a yellow card after the City keeper clattered Erik Pieters outside his area, but that was a rare scare on a flawless night for the leaders.

Slick Man City sink Burnley to move three points clear

Brighton condemned Liverpool to their second straight Premier League home defeat on Wednesday, winning 1-0 to leave the champions with a mountain to climb if they are going to retain their title.

Jurgen Klopp's men appeared to have turned the corner with impressive victories at Tottenham and West Ham after a five-match winless run.

But defeat to lowly Brighton at Anfield leaves them in fourth place, seven points behind leaders Manchester City, who also have a game in hand and look increasingly likely to win their third title in four years.

Liverpool's 68-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League was ended by Burnley last month and they have now lost consecutive league games at Anfield for the first time since 2012.

Troublingly for Klopp, his side have failed to score in three consecutive home league games for the first time since 1984.

Graham Potter's men executed their game plan to perfection, snuffing out Liverpool's dangermen and offering a threat up front.&nbsp;

The only goal of the game came in the 56th minute courtesy of a Steven Alzate strike.

Klopp, who must prepare his team for the daunting task of facing Pep Guardiola's Manchester City on Sunday, said his team were not mentally fresh.

"The only explanation now is that we are a fatigued team, mentally more or less," he told BT Sport. "That leads to not the maximum freshness in your legs.

"We had our moments but they deserved to win."

He added:&nbsp;"The only thing we can do is use the things that happen and learn from them. The solution is always the players. It has been a tough week and tonight it was not enough. City are flying and we have to find solutions."

<h2>- Defensive crisis -</h2>

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was again drafted into central defence in the absence of any of the club's senior centre-backs, with new signing Ben Davies on the substitutes' bench.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker was absent due to illness, meaning Caoimhin Kelleher made only his second Premier League appearance, and forward Sadio Mane was also missing.

Liverpool enjoyed the bulk of possession in the early stages but in-form Brighton were organised at the back and pushed forward when they could.

Mohamed Salah had a golden chance to give Liverpool the lead in the opening minutes when he collected a long ball from Henderson but put his shot over the bar.

Salah offered an occasional threat down the right but Liverpool looked short of ideas in the final third when faced with the massed blue shirts of Brighton.

The in-form visitors had a chance to take the lead midway through the first half when the ball fell to Dan Burn after Neal Maupay's shot was blocked but he skied over from close range.

Klopp's men went in at half-time having failed to muster a single shot on goal.

The second half shaped up like the first, with Liverpool probing but looking short of inspiration.

Instead it was Brighton who took the lead with the game's first shot on target.

Burn, on the left side of the Liverpool area, headed a cross-field ball back across goal and Alzate combined with Leandro Trossard to steer the ball into the net.

Klopp threw on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Divock Origi for Georginio Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri as he sought a way back into the match.

Salah flashed a left-footed shot over after Trent Alexander-Arnold fizzed a ball across the area and Adam Webster produced a superb, muscular challenge to stop the Egypt forward in his tracks.

But Brighton were still threatening at the other end. Kelleher saved smartly from Pascal Gross and Trossard also forced a save.

The result lifts Brighton to 15th in the table, 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

"It's not an easy place to get points," said Potter. "They're a top team. We're just trying our best in this league.&nbsp;

"Every game we face a huge task. It's one for the supporters and everyone involved in the club. It's not often a club like us come here and win."

"It's not an easy place to get points," said Potter. "They're a top team. We're just trying our best in this league. "Every game we face a huge task. It's one for the supporters and everyone involved in the club. It's not often a club like us come here and win."

Lionel Messi denies contact with PSG and Man City over transfer: Report

Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has slammed Paris Saint-Germain star Angel&nbsp;Di&nbsp;Maria for allegedly trying to unsettle Lionel Messi ahead of the UEFA Champions League&nbsp;round of 16 encounter between the two sides.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Messi is out of contract after the end of the ongoing 2020-21 season and is free to sign pre-contract with non-Spanish clubs with Paris Saint-Germain one of the clubs interested in the Argentine forward. When asked about links of Messi to PSG, Di Maria sounded&nbsp;optimistic as the Argentine said that he hopes PSG sign Messi.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The comments by Di Maria&nbsp;has&nbsp;irked Koeman, who said that the statement "seems to be lack of respect" while terming it as disrespectful towards Barcelona.&nbsp;&nbsp;

'It’s not fair...': Ronald Koeman slams PSG's Di Maria for trying to unsettle Lionel Messi

Bayern Munich are the overwhelming favourites to cap a remarkable last year as they head to Qatar for the delayed FIFA Club World Cup, taking place later than scheduled because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic which overshadows the tournament.

Bayern qualified after their triumph in last season's UEFA Champions League, the crowning moment of a 2020 which also saw Hansi Flick's team win the Bundesliga, German Cup, UEFA Super Cup and German Super Cup.

Now they are hoping to become the eighth consecutive European winner of the Club World Cup, a run that started when Bayern themselves lifted the trophy in Morocco in 2013.

If they do so they can -- albeit with the caveat that this competition is being played in a different calendar year -- match the achievement of Pep Guardiola's Barcelona, who won six trophies in 2009.

"That would probably be the icing on the cake, but it's obviously going to be a challenge," said Flick.

"It's always the case at Bayern Munich that you want to have the most successful season possible and after the treble, you're obviously looking at the FIFA Club World Cup."

Bayern have named all the big guns, from Manuel Neuer to Thomas Mueller and Robert Lewandowski, in their squad ahead of their entrance in the semi-final next Monday against either African champions Al Ahly or host nation representative Al Duhail.

<h2>- Final against Palmeiras? -</h2>

The expectation is that they will go through to the February 11 final and likely face Palmeiras, with the Brazilians fresh from winning the Copa Libertadores last weekend.

Palmeiras play their semi-final on Sunday against either Tigres of Mexico, the CONCACAF Champions League winner, or Ulsan Hyundai of South Korea, who are back in Qatar after winning the Asian Champions League there in December.

Tigres and Ulsan Hyundai kick the tournament off on Thursday when they meet at the Ahmad Bin Ali stadium in Al Rayyan, on the outskirts of Doha.

<h2>- Muted atmosphere, but fans allowed in -</h2>

The mood in Doha is muted compared to the last Club World Cup in December 2019, which saw thousands of supporters of Liverpool and Brazilian giants Flamengo descend on the normally staid city.

This time, the tournament kicks off with Qatar seeing a spike in coronavirus cases and hospital admissions, and local authorities have taken a swathe of measures including banning travelling fans from outside the country.

New cases over the last week jumped by a third compared to the week before, according to official data, while hospital admissions due to Covid-19 are up 85 percent in the past month, according to the country's Ministry of Public Health.

As of Monday, 249 people had died from the virus while the overall case load has topped 151,000 in a country with a population of under three million.

<h2>- Obligatory testing -</h2>

However&nbsp;Abdulwahab al-Musleh, sports affairs adviser to Qatar's health ministry, claimed ahead of the tournament that fans faced a negligible risk of contracting the virus because of the requirement for them to present a negative test ahead of each match.

That comes after the experience of the domestic Emir of Qatar Cup final in December, where all 20,000 fans who attended the half-capacity match were required to present a negative test.

And so while sporting events across much of the world are currently going ahead behind closed doors, a limited number of spectators will be allowed inside Club World Cup games.

Spectator numbers are capped at 30 percent of capacity at each of the two 40,000-seat venues. Social distancing, mask wearing and use of Qatar's contact tracing app will be mandatory.

Meanwhile, following a cluster of cases in the Saudi Al-Hilal team during the AFC Champions League late last year, Musleh said "several measures to prevent that recurring" had been taken.

The pandemic has already directly impacted the tournament though as Oceania champions Auckland City withdrew due to quarantine measures required by the New Zealand authorities.

Despite the spectre of coronavirus, the tournament remains a useful test event for FIFA and organisers ahead of the fast-approaching 2022 World Cup in the country.

Covid tests for fans, limited crowds and Bayern favourites - Club World Cup kicks off in Qatar

Manchester United thrashed Southampton 9-0 on Tuesday to equal the biggest win in Premier League history.

Goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial (2), Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Edinson Cavani, Daniel James and a Jan Bednarek own goal comprised United's scoring spree.

Here, AFP Sport looks at the other three occasions a team has scored nine goals in the Premier League era:

<h2>Southampton 0 Leicester 9 (2019)</h2>

Remarkably, Southampton's humiliation at Old Trafford wasn't the first time they had endured a nine-goal thumping in Ralph Hasenhuttl's reign as manager.

Leicester put them to the sword in ruthless fashion after Southampton had defender Ryan Bertrand sent off for a studs-up challenge on Ayoze Perez in the build-up to the opening goal.

Ben Chilwell got that goal in the 10th minute and Perez went on to complete a hat-trick.

Jamie Vardy got a hat-trick, while Youri Tielemans and James Maddison also hit the back of the net in the biggest away win in English top-flight history.

<h2>Tottenham 9 Wigan 1 (2009)</h2>

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored five times in the second half, notching what was then the Premier League's second-quickest hat-trick in seven minutes.

At that time, Defoe became only the third player to score five goals in a single Premier League match after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, David Bentley and Niko Kranjcar were also on target as hapless Wigan were ripped to shreds at White Hart Lane.

<h2>Manchester United 9 Ipswich 0 (1995)</h2>

Andy Cole sparked United's biggest league victory in 103 years as he scored five times at Old Trafford.

United scored six in the second half, with Mark Hughes on target twice.

Paul Ince and Roy Keane also netted for Alex Ferguson's team against an Ipswich side who finished bottom at the end of the season.

Despite that ruthless display, United were pipped to the title by Blackburn.

The Premier League's nine-goal demolitions

Manchester United matched the Premier League record&nbsp;win with a 9-0 demolition of nine-man Southampton on Tuesday to move level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table.

It is the second consecutive campaign Saints have suffered a 9-0 thrashing after Leicester last season at St Mary's equalled the record set by United against Ipswich in 1995.

The visitors were punished for Alexandre Jankewitz's second-minute red card&nbsp;on his Premier League debut.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Jan Bednarek's own goal made it 4-0 before half-time.

Anthony Martial came off the bench to score twice in the second half, while Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James also netted either side of Bednarek's late dismissal.

City have two games in hand on United to reassert their advantage in the title race, the first of which comes at Burnley on Wednesday.

But United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer evoked memories of the 2011/12 title race that City snatched on goal difference from their local rivals as the reason why his side had to show no mercy.

"We know better than anyone what goal difference can do to you because we have lost the league on goal difference," said the Norwegian.

Solskjaer had called on his forward players to be more clinical after a number of missed chances cost United in a shock 2-1 defeat to Sheffield United and 0-0 draw at Arsenal over the past week.

Rashford, Martial and Fernandes had all seen goals dry up in 2021, but Solskjaer is hoping they will now have the perfect confidence boost heading into the second half of the season.

"We've been waiting for them to show the magic and it was a night for them to go and enjoy it," he added. "We've not had many times where we could just enjoy the second half."

<h2>- Southampton 'helpless' -</h2>

Ralph Hasenhuttl survived the 9-0 thrashing by Leicester to turn his time in charge of Southampton around.

But after a bright start to the season, the Saints have lost four consecutive leagues games to slip to 12th.

Southampton were already decimated by an injury crisis that led to Jankewitz getting his chance before the 19-year-old lunged into McTominay after just 79 seconds.

"He punished the guys who were on the pitch. They were helpless after he is sent off," said Hasenhuttl.

"You know the 90 minutes can be very long against a team of this quality. The result is there and we have to live with the result again.

"It doesn't reflect what we did this season so far. It's hard to explain. We have to live with this again."

Wan-Bissaka opened the floodgates on 18 minutes when he scored just his second goal for the club by meeting Luke Shaw's cross at the back post.

Rashford then converted Mason Greenwood's cross and it was from his driven low ball across the box that Bednarek turned into his own net.

Cavani powered home a header from another Shaw cross before the Uruguayan thought he had won a penalty.

A VAR review gave Southampton a rare let-off as instead a free-kick on the edge of the box was awarded.

However, Hasenhuttl's men were denied themselves after the break when Che Adams had a consolation strike ruled out for a marginal offside.

The goals at the other end kept on coming as Martial ended his eight-game goal drought with a thumping finish from Fernandes's through ball.

McTominay then drilled home a low effort from long range.

A nightmare night for the visitors continued when Bednarek was harshly sent off after another lengthy VAR review for clipping Martial as he bore down on goal.

Fernandes coolly converted the resulting penalty to end his own five-game goalless run in the league.

Martial then controlled and finished Wan-Bissaka's cross before James inflicted the final blow in stoppage time by flicking home Fernandes's header.

Merciless Man Utd equal record in 9-0 thrashing of Southampton

Liverpool finally bolstered their defensive options by signing Schalke's Ozan Kabak and Preston's Ben Davies before the Premier League transfer window slammed shut on Monday.

Meanwhile Premier League champions' Japanese attacking midfielder Takumi Minamino left for Southampton on loan until the end of the season in one of the few moves between Premier League clubs on a quiet deadline day.

The January window is regarded as a sellers' market and often a time for stop-gap measures but Liverpool were forced to act.

The champions are missing all of their senior central defenders, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out of action.&nbsp;

Fabinho, who had impressed at centre-back after moving from his usual midfield position, recently joined the injured list while captain Jordan Henderson, who usually plays in midfield, has been forced to deputise at the back.

Japanese international Minamino departed Anfield for Southampton in a surprise move allowed to be completed after the window shut because the Saints had submitted the necessary paperwork in time.

"I am very pleased to welcome Takumi to our squad for the rest of this season," Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl said in club statement issued two hours after the 2300 GMT deadline.

"He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us.&nbsp;

"This will give us some additional depth in our squad at an important time."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had been suggesting for several weeks that a replacement centre-back would be a major lift for his team.

Klopp got his wish at last as the Reds brought in two defenders in the final hours of the transfer window.

"It's probably clear that in a normal transfer window, without any issues, we would not look at Preston if there's a player for us," he said.

"But since we saw him and since our situation got clearer and clearer -– the problems we had –- when we saw him we got really excited about it and thought, 'Wow.' We see the quality and we see the potential."

Davies made 145 appearances for Preston, scoring two goals, since his debut in 2013.

"I've never actually been to Anfield and I haven't had a look around yet."

Major moves involving "Big Six" Premier League clubs were few and far between in the January window.

Top-flight clubs, who splashed the cash in the summer transfer window, are reeling from the financial fallout as a result of the Covid-19 crisis and are coming to terms with new Brexit rules that make it tougher to recruit young players from Europe.

The champions are missing all of their senior central defenders, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out of action. "He will help provide another good attacking option, and is importantly the right profile of player for us. "This will give us some additional depth in our squad at an important time." Liverpool bolster defence, Minamino off to Saints as window shuts

An angry Andre Villas-Boas offered his resignation as coach of Marseille on Tuesday after revealing the Ligue 1 club signed midfielder Olivier Ntcham from Celtic against his wishes on transfer deadline day.

"I want nothing from OM, no money. I just want to leave," Villas-Boas said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Ntcham, a 24-year-old former France Under-21 international, joined on loan from Celtic until the end of the season just before the winter transfer window closed but Villas-Boas said he had not been in favour of the deal and knew nothing about it.

"The transfer window closed with the arrival of a new player on deadline day. It was not a decision that was taken by me. I had nothing to do with the decision," he said.

"I found out this morning when I woke up and looked at the press. I had specifically said no to that player and he was never on our list of targets.

"Because of that I have handed in my resignation to the board."

Villas-Boas, the former Porto, Chelsea and Tottenham manager, had already said last week that he expected to leave when his contract expires at the end of this season, with Marseille on a run of just one win in nine games in all competitions.

Three straight league defeats have seen last season's Ligue 1 runners-up slip to ninth in the table before they face Lens on Wednesday.

Their scheduled match at home to Rennes on Saturday was postponed after several hundred angry fans stormed the club's training ground in a violent protest, leading to 25 arrests.&nbsp;

RB Leipzig said Tuesday that they have asked the German authorities to grant Champions League opponents Liverpool an exemption to strict new German coronavirus entry rules.

"On Monday, we requested an exemption for Liverpool's entry into the country," said Leipzig spokesman Till Mueller.&nbsp;

The Bundesliga club are set to host English champions Liverpool in a Champions League last-16 game on February 16, but the match has been thrown into doubt by a partial travel ban which Germany introduced last weekend.&nbsp;

The new rules, slated to last until the day after the game, ban travellers from countries hit by new, more contagious coronavirus variants such as Britain.

Though there are some exceptions for medical workers and others in key professions, an interior ministry spokesperson told AFP on Monday that the new rules contained "no special provision for professional sportspeople".

Yet Mueller said Leipzig were working on a solution to the problem.

"We are of course in discussions with the authorities, with Liverpool and with UEFA," he said, adding that the club had filed an exemption request with the federal police.&nbsp;

"We hope that we receive a quick response because a lot depends on this," he added.

According to German media reports, UEFA's regulations decree that Leipzig must find a way of hosting the match or risk forfeiting it as a 3-0 defeat.

Potential solutions include playing the game at a neutral ground outside of Germany, or switching the home and away legs of the tie.

Yet Leipzig club bosses insisted that they were optimistic that the game would go ahead as planned.

"It is not our aim to play the game in St. Petersburg or elsewhere," club director Oliver Mintzlaff told Bild.&nbsp;

Commercial director Florian Scholz added that the club were "working on the assumption that Liverpool can enter the country".&nbsp;
