This Pakistani city produces more than 70% of all footballs in the world

Football was India's second-largest export commodity until 2011.

Pakistan then started manufacturing stitchless balls that were bonded together using heat.

They are more resilient and hold their shape better.

Following that, the Islamic Republic was awarded contracts for the FIFA World Cups in 2014 and 2018.

In the Pakistani city of Sialkot, almost 70% of the world's soccer balls are manufactured.

At least 1,000 soccer ball firms employ almost 60,000 individuals in Sialkot.

Despite its FIFA rating of 198, Pakistan shipped 38 million balls for $154 million ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

A brief history of football production in Sialkot

It's fascinating to learn when and how Sialkot became famous for its soccer balls.

Soccer ball manufacture may be dated back to the region's British colonial era.

The football-obsessed Britons used to order their supplies from Britain, and they would become agitated while waiting for the shipment of footballs to arrive by sea.

According to legend, in 1886, a British sergeant requested a Sialkot saddle maker to mend his punctured ball, and after being pleased with his abilities, he placed an order with him for a batch of footballs.

Since then, the city has produced a large number of footballs for the game, players, and fans.

Traditionally, footballs were hand-stitched, but the stitching and artisan skills of the employees were so good that, for the first time, in 1982, the city of Sialkot was awarded a contract to manufacture footballs for the FIFA World Cup 1982, which was hosted by Spain.

Pakistan's footballs for the 1982 World Cup were an upgraded version of the Adidas Tango Ball, which was initially presented for the 1978 FIFA Football World Cup.

The 1982 World Cup ball was an upgraded version of the leather ball, with rubber inlaid over the seams for the first time to prevent water from leaking in.

As a result, it was the first World Cup ball to be water-resistant.
This was a much-needed need since otherwise, the ball would get heavier owing to water seepage through the seams.

However, the rubber used to prevent water entrance would wear out due to normal kicking and would need to be changed throughout the game.

It was the last genuine leather World Cup football.

Sialkot is also well-known for producing volleyballs, hockey sticks, cricket bats, and apparel.

Local manufacturers think that Pakistani firms are taking business away from their Chinese competitors due to their high-quality final goods.

Premier League players who are fully vaccinated will be allowed to travel to countries on the UK`s red list during the international break and will be allowed to train or play when they quarantine on return, the BBC reported on Friday.

Many clubs refused to release players to `red list` countries such as Brazil and Argentina last month and the Premier League is looking to avoid a similar situation which angered national federations.

The strict COVID-19 quarantine rules require those who return to England from a red list country to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days, but players will now be quarantined at "bespoke facilities" and will be allowed to train or play.

"We have worked closely with football authorities to achieve an outcome that balances the interests of both club and country while maintaining the highest levels of public health and safety," a government spokesperson told the BBC https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/58753489.

"Our best defence against the virus is vaccination and these new measures will allow fully vaccinated players to fulfil their international duties in the safest, most practical way possible, while allowing them to train and play with their clubs as early as possible upon their return."

The international break runs from Oct. 4-15, with the Premier League resuming on Oct. 16.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said that he would not be surprised if Cristiano Ronaldo is still playing at the age of 40. Ronaldo has started his second spell at United in great form, managing to score four goals in his first three games.

Ronaldo will turn 37 in February next year, however, Solskjaer believes that the striker can maintain his fitness very well."I wouldn`t be surprised if he was still playing at 40, not at all. The way he looks after himself, that`s the key, that`s the key to it all and, of course, some genes. There must be some genes in there! He has put every single ounce of energy and effort into becoming the player he is," Goal.com quoted Solskjaer as saying.

"He deserves every single plaudit that he gets for first, his own physical state but, even more impressively, when you have achieved as much as he has. He is still just as hungry as ever. His mentality is still absolutely spot on and that`s just desire from inside of him and he`s going to keep going until his legs or even his head say no that`s it, I`ve given everything now," he added.

Manchester United will next square off against Aston Villa in the Premier League later today. The Red Devils are in the third spot currently in the standings with 13 points from five games.

United will then lock horns with Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday. If Ronaldo features in the clash against Villarreal, he would break the all-time record for Champions League appearances.

Afghanistan’s youth women's football team players, along with their families, have reached the neighbouring country Pakistan and will now look to seek political asylum in third countries amid growing concerns over the status of female athletes under the new Taliban government in Kabul.

Ever since the Taliban outfit took over in Kabul, Afghanistan, they have remained firm on their stance to not allow women athletes to continue with their respective sports, adding to their woes and creating a huge outrage among the sporting fraternity.

As many as 81 people, including female players of several youth teams, their coaches and family members touched down in Pakistan, via the Torkham border. On Thursday (September 16), 34 more are expected to arrive in the country.

"They will go to some other country after 30 days as several international organizations are working towards settling them in any other country, including the UK, US and Australia," said Umar Zia, a senior Pakistan Football Federation official. The team will stay put at the FIFA House, situated inside Gaddafi Sports Complex in Lahore.

For the unversed, even during the earlier Taliban rule -- from 1996 to 2001 -- women were kept behind and not allowed to take part in work and education whereas girls were banned to attend school. Hence, sports was also out of reach for the female athletes and everything remains the same this time around as well.

Recently, a Taliban representative told Australian broadcaster SBS on why the Afghan women's cricket team won't be allowed to take part in their sport, whereas the men's cricket team have their full support. "Islam and the Islamic Emirate do not allow women to play cricket or play the kind of sports where they get exposed," SBS quoted the deputy head of the Taliban's cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, as saying.

Given the stance of the Taliban government, the female athletes still confined in Kabul remain clueless about their future amid the huge unrest in their homeland. While the women's football team has started the procedure to leave their home country, the next move of the Afghan female cricket team is awaited as Taliban regime remains firm on their decision and isn't willing to sympathise with them at any cost.

Everton manager Rafa Benitez hailed new signings Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray as they both scored in a 3-1 victory against Burnley on Monday to maintain his side`s impressive start to the new campaign.

The hosts, without the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin, were struggling and trailing 1-0 to Ben Mee`s goal before three goals in six minutes turned the match on its head.

Winger Townsend, signed on a free transfer from Crystal Palace, produced a pinpoint cross to set up Michael Keane`s headed equaliser and the former Crystal Palace winger then struck a sensational left-foot shot to put Everton ahead.

Gray completed the turnaround when he slotted home after latching on to a pass by Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Everton have now scored 10 goals in four games and are level on 10 points with leaders Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

"When we scored our goal, we had more confidence, played 4-3-3, created more chances and could have scored more goals," Benitez said. "Really pleased with the connection between the team and the fans. We are looking to build a fortress here.

"Both Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend have quality and are good pros. They are keen to learn, even Andros at his age. The main thing in this team, everyone said we needed wingers.

"Today Richarlison did a great job also and the two wingers helped the striker do better."

Former Leicester City winger Gray has now scored in each of his last three appearances since joining from Bayer Leverkusen and his price tag of 1.7 million pounds looks to be a bargain.

While it was a satisfying night in the end for Everton, Burnley`s poor start continues and they have only one point from their opening games, sitting in 18th place.

"A poor reaction to us scoring. We let them creep into the game and then a mad six minutes follow. You have to make things happen," manager Sean Dyche said.

"I think it is a really good away performance until they score. My big feeling is we are way wiser than that six minutes. That is something we have to learn from."

Brazilian football legend Pele is ready to leave the intensive care unit of a Sao Paulo hospital after undergoing surgery for a suspected colon tumor, one of his daughters said Monday.

Kely Nascimento wrote a message giving an update on her father's health in Portuguese and in English on her Instagram account, accompanied by a close-up photo of the smiling 80-year-old football mega-star.

"He is doing well post surgery, he is not in pain and is in a good mood (annoyed that he can only eat jello but will persevere!)," Nascimento wrote.

"He will move into a regular room in the next day or two and then go home."

Her father "is strong and stubborn and with the support and care of the brilliant team at (Albert) Einstein (Hospital) and all of the love, energy and light that the world is sending, he will get through this!" she wrote.

"I wanted to say thank you... from the bottom of my heart for all of the loving, concerned and supportive texts, DMs and emails you guys have sent me," Nascimento added.

"I have not had the chance to respond to many but I do read them and I feel hugged."

The most recent hospital bulletin, from Friday, stated that Edson Arantes do Nascimento -- better known as Pele -- was recovering in a "satisfactory" manner and "actively conversing and displaying vital signs within normal range."

The suspected tumor was detected during routine tests, according to the hospital, where Pele has been undergoing treatment since August 31.

Considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time, Pele has been in poor health in recent years, and has had various stints in the hospital.

The only player in history to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), Pele burst onto the global stage at just 17 with dazzling goals, including two in the final against hosts Sweden, as Brazil won the World Cup for the first time in 1958.

"O Rei" (The King) went on to have one of the most storied careers in sport, scoring more than 1,000 goals before retiring in 1977.

"The people demanded it, the heart shook and now he will be wearing the red and black," Flamengo wrote in a tweet. Luiz played for Benfica and Paris St Germain but enjoyed his best spell in Europe with Chelsea, where he won the Champions League, two FA Cups and the English Premier League. The 34-year-old signed a deal until December 2022.

Paris St Germain kept their perfect Ligue 1 record intact as they hammered promoted Clermont 4-0 with a brutal display on Saturday.

In the absence of Lionel Messi and Neymar, who were not in the squad after returning late from international duty with Argentina and Brazil, Kylian Mbappe netted his fourth goal on his first appearance at the Parc des Princes since his failed transfer to Real Madrid.

The France striker, who has just recovered from a calf injury, was a constant threat as he added to Ander Herrera`s first-half brace with Idrissa Gueye rounding if off after the hour.

PSG, who travel to Club Brugge for their Champions League Group A opener on Wednesday, lead the standings on 15 points with Clermont down to fourth on eight points after their first defeat in their first season in the elite.

"We didn`t concede a goal, it was very important against a team who had been playing so well since the beginning of the season," said PSG midfielder Danilo Pereira.

Olympique de Marseille, who have a game in hand, moved up to third on 10 points after their 21-year-old Senegalese striker Ahmadou Bamba Dieng scored in both halves, also hitting the post twice, in a 2-0 win at Monaco.

The principality side, who have already lost three matches, are 14th on four points.

Earlier, the Parc des Princes crowd paid tribute to French film icon Jean-Paul Belmondo and former club defender Jean-Pierre Adams who both died this week with Messi in the stands.

Clermont played their possession game early on but left space on the flanks and Achraf Hakimi made the most of it on the right, managing a powerful cross that was tipped away by Arthur Desmas, only for Herrera to head home in the 20th minute.

The visitors continued to press and created danger in the area, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, playing his first game with PSG at the expense of Keylor Navas, proved solid.

"It was my first game, it was a bit special and we got a perfect result after a good preparation," said the Italy keeper.

"I was a bit emotional to play my first game for the club."

Mauricio Pochettino`s side doubled the tally in the 31st minute as Mbappe`s cutback was deflected by Florent Ogier into the path of Herrera, who slammed the ball in for his third goal of the season.

Mbappe, the only pure striker in the starting 11, extended PSG`s advantage 10 minutes into the second half, finishing off a counterattack after being played through by Julian Draxler.

He was at it again 10 minutes later when his right-footed strike was parried by Desmas, but Gueye was lying in wait and headed into the empty net.

Former Brazilian soccer great Pele remains in an intensive care unit and is recovering satisfactorily almost a week after surgery to remove a tumor from his colon, his doctors said on Friday.

Pele "is conscious, conversing actively and is maintaining normal vital signs," a statement from the Alberto Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo said.

In a separate social media post, the 80-year-old three times World Cup winner said he was feeling better and joked he still had hopes of playing again.

"My friends, with each passing day I feel a little better," he said on Instagram. "I`m looking forward to playing again, but I`m still going to recover for a few more days."

"While I`m here, I take the opportunity to talk a lot with my family and to rest."

Pele`s doctors discovered the tumor last week during his annual medical and he was operated on last Saturday. It was not clear if the tumor was cancerous.

The former Santos and New York Cosmos player was famous for rarely getting injured, but he has suffered from hip problems for years and cannot walk unaided.

His public appearances were already being cut before the COVID-19 pandemic and since then he has made few unnecessary forays outside his house near Santos.

His son last year said his famous father was depressed, something the star quickly denied.

European Leagues, the body representing professional club competitions on the continent, has firmly and unanimously opposed any proposals to stage the World Cup every two years.

European Leagues is the latest among a number of stakeholders in the game who have expressed concerns over FIFA`s plans for a biennial World Cup.

"The Leagues will work together with the other stakeholders to prevent football governing bodies to take unilateral decisions that will harm domestic football which is the foundation of our industry," the association said in a statement on Thursday.

FIFA, acting on a suggestion made by the Saudi Arabia Football Federation earlier this year, is conducting a feasibility study into whether it can go ahead with the ambitious idea of a biennial World Cup.

"New competitions, revamped competitions or expanded competitions for club and national team football both at continental level and/or at global level are not the solutions to the current problems of our game in an already congested calendar," added the European Leagues statement https://europeanleagues.com/european-leagues-statement-on-football-calendar.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday said there were too many "meaningless international games" and such a system was unhealthy for the sport, adding that a new men`s calendar is likely to be introduced by the end of 2024 when the current cycle ends.

Brazilian health officials accused four Argentine footballers of breaking quarantine rules on Saturday and began an investigation that could lead to their exclusion from this weekend`s World Cup qualifier between the two sides.

The Argentina squad flew into Brazil on Friday, the day after beating Venezuela 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Caracas.

The squad for Sunday`s game at the Corinthians arena contains four players who play in England, Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur duo Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero.

Anvisa said that with few exemptions non-Brazilians were prohibited from entering Brazil from Britain, Northern Ireland, South Africa or India.

Those given exemptions must advise authorities on arrival and spend 14 days in quarantine.

"The players in question, who arrived in Brazil on a flight from Caracas (Venezuela) to Guarulhos, declared they had not spent time in any of the four countries with restrictions on them in the last 14 days," Anvisa said in a statement.

In a separate statement the Sao Paulo State Health Secretariat said "an epidimiological and sanitary investigation has begun."

Brazilian news site UOL said if the four players could not provide documents showing they were exempt from quarantine they could be prevented from playing in Sunday`s game.

Brazil lead the South American qualifying group for Qatar 2022, six points ahead of second-placed Argentina. The top four qualify automatically for the World Cup.

There has been anger in South America after several teams were deprived of key players for this month’s triple header of qualifiers.

Brazil are without nine key men for the Argentina game, and other South American sides have also lost players due to a decision by some European clubs not to let their players travel to the continent.

They would have to quarantine on return and the clubs do not want to lose their players for subsequent league games.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni criticised the decision earlier on Saturday and said it compromised the integrity of the World Cup.

“It is not equal and that’s very clear,” Scaloni said.

Chelsea star N'Golo Kante's ankle injury worsened during a Premier League clash against Liverpool on Saturday, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed.

The 30-year-old's injury was aggravated following a challenge from Liverpool's Sadio Mane due to which he was substituted at half-time. The midfielder initially picked up the injury in the warm-up ahead of the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month and was not involved in Chelsea's Premier League season opener against Crystal Palace as a precaution.

"He is injured. He missed the Arsenal game because of pain in his ankle and some inflammation, but it was nothing serious obviously because he was back in training and he started (against Liverpool)," Tuchel said.

"In winning the ball in this situation, the opponent fell on his ankle and twisted it again. He immediately had the same pain he had before the Arsenal game and he was lacking the force to accelerate and we had to take him off.

"Can there be any harder challenges than going one man down and taking N'Golo Kante off at the same time at half-time at Anfield and having Liverpool playing towards the Kop? But we did excellently and we are super happy... we deserved the point."

Chelsea are second on the Premier League table as they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on September 11.

Shakhtar Donetsk clinched a berth in the lucrative Champions League group stage with a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win over Monaco after fighting back from two goals down in their playoff round return leg on Wednesday.

The Ukrainian side joined RB Salzburg as the Austrian champions beat Danes Brondby 4-2 on aggregate, and Sheriff Tiraspol, who became the first Moldovan side to reach the group stage with a 3-0 overall victory against Dinamo Zagreb.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at home, Monaco turned the tide as a Wissam Ben Yedder brace gave them a 2-0 lead on the night in Kharkiv before second-half substitute Marlos levelled the tie with a 74th-minute strike.

With the away goals rule no longer in effect in European club competition as of this season, Shakhtar forced the final twist thanks to a 114th-minute own goal from Monaco captain Ruben Aguilar after the French side missed a string of chances.

Ben Yedder fired a dominant Monaco into an 18th-minute lead on the night and put the visitors in the driving seat in the 39th when he steered home a superb low cross from the left by Caio Henrique.

Ben Yedder then missed a pair of sitters either side of halftime and Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov denied Kevin Volland with a superb stoppage-time save after Marlos had given Shakhtar a lifeline with a neat finish inside the near post.

Shakhtar were on the back foot in extra time too but Monaco were ultimately punished for their misses when Aguilar stuck his foot out to block a pass and the looping clearance sailed over goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel into the back of the net.

Salzburg raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the return leg against Brondby as Benjamin Sesko struck with a clinical finish and Brenden Aaronson added the second when he slid the ball under goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.

Brondby defender Andreas Maxsoe pulled one back for the home side from close range in the 62nd minute but it was scant consolation for the Danish side as Salzburg held out comfortably.

Having stunned Dinamo 3-0 at home in the first leg, Sheriff eased to a goalless draw in Croatia`s capital to defy the odds again after they knocked out 1991 European Cup winners Red Star Belgrade in the previous qualifying round.

The group stage draw will be held in Istanbul on Thursday.

European clubs have accused world soccer`s governing body FIFA of abusing its regulatory function in a growing row over the extended-release of players for World Cup qualifiers in September and October.

The Premier League and Spain`s LaLiga both said they backed clubs refusing to make players available for matches in South America.

Premier League sides will be particularly hard hit by FIFA`s decision to extend a mandatory release period from nine to 11 days, to enable triple-headers to take place in South America.

England`s strict quarantine rules have also added to the headache, with the Premier League saying no exemption had been granted by the government for football players.

Liverpool had already refused to allow forward Mohamed Salah to travel to Africa for World Cup qualifiers with Egypt next month because he would be forced to quarantine on his return to England.

The same measures could affect Liverpool’s Brazilian trio of Roberto Firmino, Alisson Becker and Fabinho, who have been called up for next month’s qualifiers against Chile, Argentina and Peru.

Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Peru are all on the British government`s `red list` of countries that trigger a 10-day hotel quarantine to guard against the spread of COVID-19.

"Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month," the league said in a statement.

Premier League players would potentially miss two matches if they were quarantined on their return.

LALIGA SUPPORT

Spain`s LaLiga said in a statement it would support clubs refusing to release their players for the South American qualifiers.

"At the moment there are 25 players from 13 different clubs (affected), a number that could be expanded when the calls of Ecuador and Venezuela are announced," it said.

"The Spanish association understands that the world calendar cannot and should not be changed in this way, especially if there are alternative solutions."

It said affected clubs would be summoned to a meeting in coming days.

With World Cup qualifiers also in Africa, Asia, the CONCACAF region and Europe, the clubs are on a potential collision course with FIFA.

The European Club Association (ECA) wrote to members, in a Q&A document seen by Reuters, saying FIFA had taken decisions unilaterally and "against the explicit objection of ECA and the rest of the stakeholders.

"ECA has firmly expressed its objection to FIFA’s decision and has urged FIFA to review its position," it said.

"ECA will not accept that a governing body like FIFA abuses its regulatory function in order to place its commercial interests and those of its member associations above the physical wellbeing of players and legitimate sporting interests of clubs."

The ECA said FIFA had decided this month, at the request of South American confederation CONMEBOL, to extend the mandatory release period "in complete disregard to the clubs’ interests".

It said FIFA was unlikely to change its decision and the ECA would have to consider what action to take.

There was no immediate comment from FIFA.

FIFA, world soccer`s governing body, will receive $201 million in compensation for losses sustained in global soccer corruption schemes, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), said on Tuesday.

The money was seized from the bank accounts of former officials who were involved in the schemes and then prosecuted following a probe into years of corruption within world soccer.

Since the DOJ unveiled the corruption probe in 2015, more than 50 defendants have been criminally charged. 27 people and four corporate entities have pleaded guilty, and two people were convicted at trial.

"Today’s announcement confirms that money stolen by corrupt soccer officials and sports marketing executives through fraud and greed will be returned to where it belongs and used to benefit the sport,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis for the Eastern District of New York in a statement.

“From the start, this investigation and prosecution have been focused on bringing wrongdoers to justice and restoring ill-gotten gains to those who work for the benefit of the beautiful game."

The DOJ said $32.3 million in forfeited funds has been approved for an initial distribution to FIFA, CONCACAF, the confederation responsible for soccer in North and Central America, CONMEBOL, which represents soccer in South America, and various constituent national soccer federations.

The funds will go into a new World Football Remission Fund to help finance football-related projects across the globe.

"I am delighted to see that money which was illegally siphoned out of football is now coming back to be used for its proper purposes, as it should have been in the first place," said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in a statement https://www.fifa.com/about-fifa/organisation/media-releases/us-department-of-justice-awards-fifa-foundation-usd-201-million-compensation.

"I would like to thank the U.S. authorities for the trust placed in FIFA, and we will make sure that these funds are used properly and bring tangible benefits for people who really need it."

Many of the defendants were ordered to forfeit assets obtained through criminal activity.

Under U.S. law the DOJ has the authority to distribute the proceeds of forfeited assets to victims of crimes, including to the soccer organisations that were defrauded.

Reynaldo Vasquez, the former president of El Salvador`s soccer federation, pleaded guilty on Monday to a racketeering conspiracy charge arising from a corruption investigation involving the payment of bribes to stage and broadcast matches.

"Kickbacks and bribes have a way of spreading like a disease through corrupt groups; pure and simple greed keeps the graft going,” said Assistant Director-in-Charge Michael J. Driscoll of the FBI’s New York Field Office.

“Not one official in this investigation seemed to care about the damage being done to a sport that millions around the world revere.

"The only silver lining is the money will now help underprivileged people who need it, not the wealthy executives who just wanted it to get richer.

"Our work isn’t finished, and our promise to those who love the game - we won’t give up until everyone sees justice for what they’ve done."

FC Barcelona head coach Ronald Koeman on Saturday admitted that the Blaugrana club is less feared without Lionel Messi.

Barcelona manager stated that the rivals were "more scared" when the Argentine was leading the attack for their side. This statement by Koeman came after his side struggled against Athletic Club and managed to just retrieve a point in their second La Liga match of the season.

"I don`t like to always talk about the same thing, but we`re talking about the best in the world," the Dutchman told in his post-match press conference, as per Goal.com.

"Our opponents were more scared when Messi was here. For us as well, if you pass the ball to Leo, usually he won`t lose it. You can tell [Messi] isn`t there. We know that and we can`t change it."

The six-times Ballon d`Or winner left the Catalan side as a free agent after the Spanish club announced that "financial and structural obstacles" meant the deal between them and Messi could not be completed.

San Mames is never an easy place to win as Barca have struggled there in recent seasons and the Saturday clash was no exception. Indeed, for much of the ninety minutes, they had their backs against the wall, and Athletic were good value for their 1-0 lead.

A flash of inspired brilliance was needed, and it came from the left foot of Memphis. The Dutchman was able to salvage a point from one of the most difficult road trips in La Liga, and in doing so celebrate his first official goal in an FC Barcelona jersey.

Liverpool made it two wins from two at the start of the new Premier League season as they cruised to a 2-0 home victory over Burnley on Saturday.

Diogo Jota edged Liverpool in front with his second goal in as many games in the 18th minute, a brilliant header in front of a first full Anfield in 17 months.

Burnley, the team who last season ended Liverpool`s 68-match unbeaten home league run, a record that stretched back almost four years, had chances to level, but their final ball was lacking at the crucial moment.

Ashley Barnes thought he had levelled early in the second half, only to be denied by the offside flag, with Liverpool capitalising on their reprieve in the 69th minute, as Sadio Mane drilled home their second.

The hosts pressed for a third, urged on by a buoyant crowd, but they settled for two, and a second clean sheet of the campaign, to go top of the standings, and leave Burnley pointless from their opening two matches.

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said Cristiano Ronaldo has told him that he will stay at the club this season, something the new boss believes guarantees goals for the Serie A giants.

Ronaldo has been linked with a move to a host of clubs this summer, with reports in Spain suggesting he could return to Real Madrid, while the Italian media speculated the 36-year-old has been offered to Premier League champions Manchester City.

"He has always trained well, I just read the gossip in the papers. He never told us he wanted to leave," Allegri told a news conference ahead of his side`s season opener at Udinese on Sunday.

"Ronaldo told me that he is staying at Juventus.

"He is an added bonus for us, because he guarantees a large number of goals. Obviously, we also have to work as a team to get the best out of an individual."

Allegri is back at Juventus for a second spell having taken over from Andrea Pirlo, who disappointed in his only season in charge of the Turin side, steering the club to a fourth-placed finish in Serie A last term.

The Italian tactician`s five seasons at the helm from 2014 to 2019 brought five league titles, four Coppa Italia wins and two runners-up finishes in the Champions League.

"There must be doubts and uncertainties about me and that creates more attention and concentration, even when things go well," Allegri added.

"This year will be like every year - Juve aims to win all competitions. It will be a balanced championship, to win you have to be consistent.

"We must realise that in order to win the Scudetto, we need daily work that is physical, technical and mental. If we are still in the running for the title in March, that means the team has found its balance."

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo said Tottenham Hotspur had squandered their early-season feelgood factor when they were stunned 1-0 by Pacos De Ferreira in the first leg of their Europa Conference League playoff on Thursday.

Four days after the high of beating champions Manchester City in their Premier League opener, Spurs were laid low in Europe`s third-tier club competition at the tiny home ground of the Portuguese club.

A Lucas Silva strike just before halftime was enough to beat a completely overhauled Tottenham side and Santo was not impressed by what he saw.

"Not good, not good," he told the post-match news conference.

"First half we lost too many passes - and the goal came from that - we were imbalanced. But not a good performance, honestly not a good performance.

"Nobody likes to lose a game or not play good," he added. "The feel-good factor disappears. This is football. It is up and down but now you realise that this is the situation, they have to bounce back. This is what we are going to do."

England captain Harry Kane missed the first two matches of the season amid continued speculation about his future but Santo confirmed the striker would soon be back training with the full squad.

"He trained today," the Portuguese coach said. "He trained with the group of players that stayed in England. He trained well and he is going to train tomorrow. And when we return he will join all the players and work (with) the group."

Kane has been a transfer target for Manchester City, with City boss Pep Guardiola saying that it was up to Tottenham to make the move happen.

The prolific striker told Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy at the end of last season that he wanted to leave the club in order to challenge for major trophies, according to media reports.

We all need some break no matter our jobs. We wanted to head home in pre-pandemic times and are now yearning to go out in what seem like endless Work From Home sessions.

If such is our condition, we can understand if a global personality takes a little break from daily tasks. Pope Francis did just that. He played Foosball, or table football for those who don't know what Foosball is.

The table is usually a fixture in pubs, but Friday was a day it was allowed to be carried into Paul VI hall in the Vatican. A young man was the challenger to Pope Francis himself.
