A busy Florida highway came to a grinding halt after a crash involving several vehicles led to the spillage of thousands of beer cans and caused injuries to the drivers.

The accident, which took place on Wednesday at 6 am at Interstate-75 near Hernando County, involves four semitractor-trailer trucks and a pick-up, the Tampa Bay Times newspaper reported.

The chain of accidents began when a driver of one of the semitrailers was trying to change lanes and crashed into the back of another semitrailer.

Later, other two semitrailers that were on the route immediately stopped to check on the crashed trucks, the newspaper reported quoting Florida Highway Patrol.

Seeing this, the driver of a pickup had also stopped.

But a fifth semitrailer — the one carrying the beers — did not slow in time for the crashed trucks and hit the pickup and then one of the semitrailers, which was carrying concrete.

The officers said that the crash caused the contents of each other’s lorries to spill on the road.

Following the accident, the route was closed for several hours. According to the troopers, the southbound lanes of I-75 and MM296 remain closed after the accidents and the traffic was diverted to SR-50.

The lane was later re-opened for traffic two hours after the accident following the clean-up.

A clip from the scene, shared by the official Twitter handle of the Florida Highway Patrol, showed thousands of beer cans and boxes strewn across the highway.

Notably, both a scud and funnel cloud can turn into tornadoes but in this case, it did not, explained the meteorologist.

On the sidelines of Disney's D23 expo, the company CEO Bob Chapek, in an interview opened up about the 'Don't Say Gay' bill controversy that erupted earlier this year when Disney was found donating to some of the bill’s backers in the state legislature.

Stating that it was a complex social issue, the Disney boss added that trying to please every side becomes very difficult in such cases.

"These are complex social issues where we absolutely, positively want to represent the needs and the expectations of our cast members, but we also realize that sometimes in such a divided world, there’s not alignment between what possibly large constituencies of our guest and consumer base are looking for in terms of the kind of content that they want to show their kids at this particular time,"

"What we try to do is be everything to everybody. That tends to be very difficult because we’re the Walt Disney Company. When you’re a lightning rod for clicks and for political podium speeches, the essence of our brand can be misappropriated or misused to try to fit the needs of any one particular group’s agenda. We want to rise above that." added the Disney CEO.

The Disney boss asserted that he didn't want the company to be caught up in any 'political subterfuge' but at the same time wanted to represent "a brighter tomorrow for families of all types, regardless of how they define themselves."

As reported by WION, after the Florida senate passed the Parental Rights in Education bill in March earlier this year, Disney initially failed to take a stand for the LGBTQ+ community.

Ghislaine Maxwell becomes 'bffs' with notorious double-murderer in jail

The US justice department has asked court to unseal the search warrant the FBI received before searching the Florida estate of former President Donald Trump.

DoJ seeks to unseal search warrant of Donald Trump's Florida home

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents who raided Donald Trump’s Florida house, Mar-a-Lago, were searching for classified documents on nuclear weapons, The Washington Post reported citing people familiar with the investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday said that he personally authorised the raid after seeking permission for a search warrant but did not discuss the investigation in great detail.

The Post, quoting officials, didn’t provide further details of the specific information sought by the agents in the raid. They also did not disclose whether the documents were related to weapons from the US or some other country.

They also refused to answer if such documents were recovered as part of the search. But they expressed apprehension that such documents said to be possessed by Trump have the potential to fall into the wrong hands.

But the people closely involved in the raid told The New York Times that the documents were so sensitive and important to national security that the Justice Department had no choice but to try and retrieve them.

The FBI is being increasingly attacked by Conservative politicians seeking an explanation from the Justice Department on what warranted the search.

FBI searched for classified nuclear documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home: Report

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has condemned the threats made to the law enforcement in the wake of raids on former US president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.

In a statement on Thursday, the FBI noted that its special agents "put their lives on the line every day to protect the public”.

The statement came hours after Trump and Conservative leaders slammed the FBI as a "corrupt" and "politicised" agency following the Monday raid, in which agents reportedly were searching for classified documents that Trump had retained in violation of rules on official records.

That was followed by a surge of violent threats against the FBI and Justice Department on social media and in conservative chat rooms, AFP reported.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has condemned the threats made to the law enforcement in the wake of raids on former US president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida.

"The threats made recently contribute to an atmosphere where some have, or will, accept violence against law enforcement as appropriate. It is not. Special Agents and their families should never be threatened with violence, including for doing their jobs," the association said. The FBI has been at the receiving end of the Conservative leaders since the raid, who described it as a state of “civil war”. While you might have heard of several drunk driving incidents, here is one that takes the cake. A heavily drunk woman was arrested for driving a golf cart on Florida’s busiest interstate on Saturday night. The 58-year-old woman was spotted by a semitruck driver driving the cart in the middle lane of Interstate 95 in Brevard County.

The arrest report says that the truck driver saw the woman passing out while driving the golf cart. The truck driver then steered the cart to the shoulder of the interstate using her truck.

The woman then tried to drive away but the truck driver quickly snatched her keys. She was so drunk that after the troopers reached the spot, she started arguing with them and kept asking for her bag.

When the troopers checked the bag, they found an open bottle of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire Whiskey.

The woman is facing misdemeanor charges of disorderly intoxication in a public place and resisting an officer without violence.

Florida: Woman arrested for driving golf cart on interstate while drunk

The gender gap in Florida is being exacerbated by climate change. Due to recent heatwaves, the sand has been heated to such an extent that nearly all turtles born are females. The National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) claims that the sex of sea turtles and alligators is determined by the temperature of developing eggs rather than during fertilisation. According to the NOAA’s Ocean Service website, a turtle’s eggs will hatch into male turtles if the temperature is below 81.86 Fahrenheit (Celsius 27.7) and female turtles if the temperature is over 88.8 Fahrenheit (31 C).

The manager of the turtle hospital in Marathon, Florida Keys, Bette Zirkelbach, stated that the last four summers in Florida were the hottest ones and it is a matter of concern. According to Zirkelbach, "Scientists that are studying sea turtle hatchlings and eggs have found no boy sea turtles, so only female sea turtles for the past four years," Reuters reported. He further stated that, according to research conducted in Australia, 99 per cent of new sea turtles born were females.

Unbelievable! A 100-pound sailfish leaps out of water and stabs woman on boat off Florida coast

Slow and steady wins the race. But, in this case, slow and steady is leisurely destroying Florida's gardens. The giant African snail, which is also potentially dangerous to humans, has re-invaded a southern US state. For about a month now, since June 23, employees of Florida's Department of Agriculture have been scouring the gardens of New Port Richey, a small community in Paso County on Florida's west coast where the invasive species has spread.

Talking to AFP, one of the department biologists Jason Stanley explained the snail "feeds on over 500 different species of plants" and a single big African snail may produce up to 2,000 eggs a year, which when combined with its huge appetite could be disastrous for the state's thriving agriculture industry.

Thanks to snail-sniffing canines more than 1,000 gastropods have already been caught in the current "snail hunt".

Authorities in Florida think someone brought the eastern African snail home as a pet, which is how it was reintroduced to the state.

Florida battles a pest that it eradicated in 2021 spending $23 million. Find out what it is

A harrowing video of the Valentine's Day 2018 shooting at a high school in Florida that left 17 people dead was played at the sentencing trial on Monday of the troubled young man who admitted to carrying out the massacre.

Nikolas Cruz pleaded guilty in October to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder for the attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

A 12-person jury is to decide whether the now 23-year-old should receive the death penalty or a life sentence for what prosecutor Mike Satz called a "cold, calculated, manipulative and deadly" massacre.

"I'm going to speak to you about the unspeakable, about this defendant's goal-directed, planned, systematic murder, mass murder, of 14 children, an athletic director, a teacher and a coach," Satz said in opening arguments.

A cell phone video recorded by a student, Danielle Gilbert, was played for the jury. The audio was made available to the public gallery and reporters.

Screams, cries and moans were punctuated by multiple shots as students huddled in their classroom trying to seek cover from bullets coming through the door.

"This can't be real," someone was heard whispering.

Gilbert, who broke down in tears as the video was played, said one person was killed in the classroom and three wounded.

Cruz, who was wearing a black Covid mask, covered his face with his hands and stared down at the table in front of him as the video was played.

Several anguished relatives of the victims fled the courtroom while others wept openly and hugged their loved ones.

'Next school shooter'

Satz, the prosecutor, told the jury that three days before the shooting, Cruz made a cellphone video in which he said "I'm going to be the next school shooter of 2018.

"My goal is at least 20 people with an AR-15 and some tracer rounds," Cruz said in the video. "It's going to be a big event and when you see me on the news, you'll know who I am."

Satz said that Cruz, after fleeing the school, ordered a drink at a Subway sandwich shop and then went to a McDonald's, where he asked the brother of a girl he had just shot for a ride.

The boy, who was not aware at the time that Cruz was the assailant, declined. Cruz was arrested shortly afterwards.

The trial in Fort Lauderdale is the rare instance of a mass shooter facing a jury, as they often either take their own lives or are killed by police.

The death penalty requires the jury to be unanimous. Cruz will otherwise be handed life without parole.

The Florida shooting stunned a country accustomed to gun violence and sparked new efforts, led by students from the school itself, to get lawmakers to pass tougher gun control laws.

'March for Our Lives'

Parkland survivors founded "March for Our Lives," organizing a rally that drew hundreds of thousands of people to the nation's capital, Washington, in 2018.

Thousands turned out for demonstrations organized by the group last month following two other mass shootings: one at a Texas elementary school that killed 19 children and two teachers, and another at a New York supermarket that left 10 Black people dead.

Those shootings helped galvanize support for the first significant federal bill on gun safety in decades.

President Joe Biden signed the bill into law in June but it fell far short of steps he had called for, including a ban on assault weapons.

Cruz bought the AR-15 semi-automatic he used in the attack legally, despite having a documented history of mental health problems.

Expelled from school for disciplinary reasons, Cruz was known to be fixated on firearms -- and had been identified as a potential threat to his classmates.

On the day of the attack, he arrived at the school in an Uber, began shooting indiscriminately at students and staff, and fled nine minutes later, leaving behind a scene of carnage.

Nikolas Cruz: Harrowing video aired at death penalty trial of US school shooter

Officials in Florida said that an elderly woman was killed by two alligators in a pond near her home after she fell into the water.

According to a statement from the Sarasota County Sheriff's office, the woman was seen falling into a pond along the course at the Boca Royale Golf and Country Club in Englewood at approximately 7:47 pm.

Authorities believe that although the woman "struggled to stay afloat", the alligators grabbed her and killed her.

Following the horrific incident, a trapper from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) removed the alligators from the pond.

In a similar incident, Sean Thomas McGuinness, a 47-year-old man's arm was torn off in May and he was found dead in John S. Taylor Park in Largo.

In 2022, alligators have already taken the lives of multiple people even though their bites are relatively rare as per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Over the last 10 years, Florida has averaged eight unprovoked bites per year that required serious medical attention, according to the commission.

It said in a statement that "The likelihood of a Florida resident being seriously injured during an unprovoked alligator incident in Florida is roughly only one in 3.1 million."

The commission added that only 26 people have been killed by alligator bites in Florida from 1948 to 2021.

× In 2022, alligators have already taken the lives of multiple people even though their bites are relatively rare as per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Over the last 10 years, Florida has averaged eight unprovoked bites per year that required serious medical attention, according to the commission. It said in a statement that "The likelihood of a Florida resident being seriously injured during an unprovoked alligator incident in Florida is roughly only one in 3.1 million." The commission added that only 26 people have been killed by alligator bites in Florida from 1948 to 2021. (With inputs from agencies) Watch WION's live TV here: ×

The state of Florida in the United States restored the ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy after a judge temporarily stopped the state law. The “trigger law” was passed in the aftermath of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade but Judge John C Cooper of an appellate court in Florida’s capital of Tallahassee called the law “unconstitutional”. However, the state won an appeal on Tuesday and that meant that the measures are once again valid in Florida with immediate effect.

While Florida and Kentucky had similar judgements, it seems that the appeals will allow the fast application of the trigger laws. Earlier, the judgement by Judge Cooper faced a lot of criticism as the Republican lawmakers of the state were not happy in the delay when it comes to their application.

The pro-abortion groups did not take the development well as they criticised the stance taken by the Republican politicians.

Florida's 15-week abortion 'trigger law' restored after temporary halt

A man set fire to a Pan-African flag flying on a pole outside the headquarters of the Uhuru Movement, a Black international socialist group based in Florida on Saturday. A security video released by the group shows the driver of a white Honda sedan pulling up outside the group’s St Petersburg headquarters, removing a flamethrower from the trunk and shooting a tower of fire at the flag flying about 30ft (9 meters) above the ground.

As reported by The Guardian, the group said the man stopped when a worker inside the building yelled at him. St Petersburg police said they were investigating the fire and working to identify a suspect. The video shows the man putting the flamethrower back in the trunk and then driving away. A photo supplied by the group shows the flag with a large hole. Police say the suspect arrested in the Buffalo massacre is a white nationalist.

The Uhuru Movement is part of the African People’s Socialist Party, whose stated aim is “uniting African people as one people for liberation, social justice, self-reliance and economic development”. The group’s director of agitation and propaganda, Akile Akai, said the attack was in the same vein as the May killing of 10 Black people at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket.

Akai said a “social system and facade of normalcy based on oppression, colonialism and exploitation” cause such attacks.

Earlier this year, Florida's House of Representatives had approved a Republican-backed Parental Rights in Education bill famously dubbed by opponents as the "don't say gay" bill. As Florida's 'don't say gay' bill goes into effect, schools impose problematic rules

Judges in US states of Florida and Kentucky have temporarily blocked these states from enforcing abortion ban, a week after the Supreme Court overruled the 1973 Wade decision that had given constitutional rights.

Florida Circuit Court Judge John Cooper in Tallahassee granted a petition from abortion rights groups on Thursday to temporarily freeze a state law that would bar abortions after the 15th week of pregnancy, reports Reuters.

In Kentucky, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Mitch Perry issued a temporary restraining order to prevent the state from enforcing a ban passed in 2019 and triggered by the Supreme Court's decision.

Kentucky is one of 13 states that enacted so-called "trigger" laws that will take effect if Roe v. Wade was overturned.

“I do find the state has failed to provide convincing and credible evidence that this law, HB 5, exhibits a compelling state interest to be protected," Cooper said, adding that the law violates people's right to privacy.

State Attorney General Daniel Cameron, a Republican, said in a statement that Judge Perry had no basis under Kentucky's constitution to allow the clinics to resume performing abortions.

With trigger laws taking effect following the reversal of Roe, abortion rights groups have swiftly gone to court to contest efforts by Republicans to expand abortion restrictions across the country. These curbs are now taking effect or are expected to in 22 states.

An 8-year-old boy from Florida, US, accidentally killed a 1-year-old girl and injured his 2-year-old sister while playing with his father’s gun.

The incident took place on Saturday night at Lion’s Motel in Escambia County, leading to the arrest of the boy’s father, Roderick Randall, who is a convicted felon, police said.

Randall was charged with culpable negligence, unlawful possession of a firearm and concealment of evidence, Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons said, reports AFP.

The tragedy took place when Rendall met with his girlfriend. He brought his son while his girlfriend had brought along her two-year-old twins and her one-year-old daughter.

The son found the weapon in the closet after his father went out, while the woman was asleep. The boy then took out the weapon and started playing with it during which he accidentally fired it.

"He pulls the gun from the holster, starts playing with it and fires a round into the one-year-old toddler, ultimately killing the one-year-old. The bullet then goes through and strikes one of the two-year-old toddlers who's injured but is expected to recover,” Simmons told reporters.

According to Simmons, when Randall returned to the room after the shooting, he grabbed the gun and drugs and left before the police arrived. He was arrested Sunday.

According to police, the 45-year-old is a 14-time convicted felon, whose record includes sentences for drugs charges, aggravated battery and evading police.

Simmons was released from the county jail Sunday night after posting $41,000 bond.

"Every year, hundreds of children in the United States gain access to unsecured, loaded guns in closets and nightstand drawers, in backpacks and purses, or just left out," according to a recent report by Everytown For Gun Safety.

A lot of people were not happy with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida saying that the state will not order or distribute COVID-19 vaccines for children under the age of 5. Florida was the only state in the United States to not place advance orders for the vaccines which were earlier authorised by Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The White House was also extremely critical of the decision, and they announced on Friday that the doctors in Florida will now be able to directly order the vaccine from the federal government. The orders will be sanctioned once the vaccines receive the final approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the next few days.

“We are encouraged that after repeated failures by Governor DeSantis to order COVID-19 vaccines even after every other state had ordered, the State of Florida is now permitting health care providers to order COVID-19 vaccines for our youngest children,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “We believe it is critical to allow parents everywhere to have the choice to get their kids vaccinated and have a conversation with their pediatrician or health care provider.”

The FDA finally authorised the COVID-19 vaccines for children between the ages of six months and five years on Friday and it is expected to be approved in a CDC vote taking place on Saturday.
