The Soviet-era Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River in the Russia-occupied part of southern Ukraine came under attack on Tuesday (June 6) amid the ongoing conflict. The partial destruction of the dam, as per both officials in Moscow and Kyiv has unleashed a torrent of water.

Officials in Ukraine, hours after the damage, confirmed that some two dozen settlements had been flooded and at least 17,000 people have since been evacuated. The Russian-occupied city of Nova Kakhovka in southern Ukraine is home to the dam that both sides have accused each other of attacking.

Kyiv has also called for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to hold an emergency meeting over what it has described as a “Russian terrorist act”. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has dubbed the attack on the Nova Kakhovka dam as a “deliberate sabotage” by Ukraine. The UNSC has agreed to meet later on Tuesday to discuss the dam issue after both Moscow and Kyiv called for the meeting.

About the Nova Kakhovka dam

The Soviet-era dam, which is 98 feet tall and 3.2 kilometres long, was built in 1956 on the Dnipro River and holds significant amounts of water. The dam is a part of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Russia-occupied city of Nova Kakhovka in Ukraine’s southern Kherson region.

According to Reuters, the water that the dam can hold amounts to that of the Great Salt Lake in the US state of Utah which is approximately 18 cubic kilometres. It is also one of the six dams that sit along the Dnipro River and is often referred to as the Kakhovka Sea as one cannot see the other bank in certain places, reported BBC.

The dam is also responsible for the water supply to southern Ukraine’s agricultural land, the Russia-annexed Crimean peninsula and the Moscow-held Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). The reservoir also feeds the Soviet-era North Crimean Canal which supplies around 85 per cent of Crimea’s water.

The dam’s reservoir also provides water essential for cooling the six reactors at the power plant. Additionally, farmers in the surrounding area also rely on the water from this dam to grow their crops and thousands are now set to face trouble in the region.

Notably, Geneva Conventions explicitly bans targeting dams during wars, due to the dangers posed to civilians by the destruction of such “works and installations containing dangerous forces”.

What happened at Nova Kakhovka dam?

Russia and Ukraine have both blamed each other for the supposed attack which has led to massive damage to the dam's structure. Kyiv, which was reportedly the first one to report the damage to the Nova Kakhovka dam, blamed Russia. On the other hand, there have been conflicting reports from the Russia-installed officials.

Images and videos from the scene show a massive breach in the dam with a large amount of water flowing downstream in the direction of the Ukrainian city of Kherson. Meanwhile, neither Kyiv nor Moscow have offered immediate public evidence to back up their claims.

‘Terrorist attack,’ ‘ecocide’: Ukraine about Nova Kakhovka dam incident

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused “Russian terrorists” of destroying the dam. He went on to allege that the Russian forces blew up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station from the inside and must be held accountable for this “terrorist attack.”

The Ukrainian president after an emergency meeting of senior officials said that the incident took place at around 2:50 am (local time) and an “internal detonation of the structures of the Kakhovskaya HPP" occurred. "About 80 settlements are in the zone of flooding”.

Zelensky also said that the “world must react,” adding, “This is just one Russian act of terrorism. This is just one Russian war crime,” and went on to accuse Moscow of committing an act of “ecocide.” “Russia is at war with life, with nature, with civilisation. Russia must leave Ukrainian land and must be held fully accountable for its terror,” said the Ukrainian president.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson has also alleged that the dam was attacked to prevent Kyiv’s troops from crossing the Dnipro River to attack Russian troops occupying the area. The incident comes as Ukraine said Monday it was conducting “offensive action" on the front line amid speculation that the long-expected counteroffensive is underway.

From no attack to ‘deliberate sabotage’: What did Russia say about the accusations?

As per initial reports, a Russia-installed official in Zaporizhzhia Vladimir Rogov said no attack had taken place and that the dam collapsed due to existing damage and the pressure of the water. It was not until later that the Kremlin spokesperson said that it was a Ukrainian attempt to stop the water supply to the Crimean peninsula which Russia had annexed back in 2014.

“We can state unequivocally that we are talking about deliberate sabotage by the Ukrainian side,” said the Kremlin spokesperson. He added, “All responsibility lies with the Kyiv regime.”

“Clearly one of the aims of this act of sabotage was to deprive Crimea of water - the water level in the reservoir is dropping and, accordingly, the water supply to the canal is being drastically reduced,” said Peskov.

However, Russia had taken steps to deal with the water supply issue in Crimea, he added. The Kremlin spokesperson also went on to say that this “sabotage is also connected with the fact that having started large-scale offensive actions two days ago”.

Moscow has also “decisively rejected” accusations by Kyiv and the West that Russian troops were behind a blast that caused damage to the dam. Meanwhile, the Russian-backed head of Crimea said there was no immediate threat to the peninsula’s water supply or flooding risk but warned of potential threats that the Northern Crimean Canal “will get more shallow,” said Sergei Aksyonov.

‘Completely destroyed’: What’s the damage at the dam?

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said that 17,000 people were being evacuated from flooded areas and more than 40,000 people are in danger of being flooded. He also warned that some 25,000 more people should be evacuated on the Russian-occupied side of the Dnipro River.

In an interview, Igor Syrota, head of Ukrhydroenergo, a Ukrainian state-owned energy company said that the Nova Kakhovka dam had been “completely destroyed” and the station “cannot be restored,” reported AFP.

Ukrainian officials have reported that some 150 tonnes of engine oil spilt in the Dnipro River due to the attack it has blamed on Russia, while Zelensky said there was “a risk of further leakage of more than 300 tons".

Speaking about the environmental impact, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that the floods have caused “long and irreversible harm” to the ecosystems and reported that animals at the Nova Kakhovka Zoo have "already died in the rising water".

Haiti: At least three killed in earthquake days after deadly floods hit Caribbean nation

In a world marred by pandemics, conflicts, and economic upheavals, there is a far greater and insidious threat that looms large: climate change. As global temperatures soar and cataclysmic weather events become distressingly frequent, the most vulnerable populations bear the brunt of its harrowing repercussions.

Earth, the only known planet to harbour life, has taken billions of years to evolve into a delicate oasis. However, human activities now pose a grave threat to our planet and future generations. However, in the last century, we have rapidly altered the delicate, life-sustaining balance of our planet. In the name of development, we are on a path of destruction, pushing species to extinction and ecosystems to the brink of collapse. We shouldn't forget that humans are just one of the 8.7 million species which live on this rocky planet. The decisions we make today will shape the world that our future generations will inherit.

Climate change is a ticking time bomb and its effects are visible in every part of the world. No country, no community, is immune to the perils of a warming planet.

Climate change's most telling effect is on marginalised communities that are already shackled by poverty and scarce resources. Small island nations teeter on the precipice of devastation as rising sea levels imperil entire populations, leaving them grappling with the looming spectre of displacement

Indigenous peoples are deeply intertwined with their surroundings. They live a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature and have the lowest carbon footprint. But they are forced to be at the forefront, facing the wrath of mother nature. They confront the ominous erosion of ancestral livelihoods and the erosion of cultural heritage due to the degradation of their habitats.

Water scarcity emerges as another critical conundrum exacerbated by climate change. Traditional drought-stricken regions witness the inexorable dwindling of water reserves, exacerbating challenges related to drinking water, sanitation, and agricultural sustenance. This vicious cycle further deepens the grips of poverty, engendering social strife and forcing them to embark on perilous journeys as migrants.

Health risks, too, assume alarming dimensions under the relentless onslaught of climate change, with the most vulnerable bearing the brunt of its merciless blows. Heatwaves unleash as an ominous spectre; the mercury has embarked on a deadly upward journey. Several all-time high temperatures records have been broken. Extreme heat waves may be our new normal, thanks to climate change. The ominous question is: are we prepared?

The spread of vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and dengue fever, is increasing exponentially as climatic shifts facilitate the spread of disease-carrying vectors, casting a pall of gloom over the most marginalised populations.

So, what can we do? Well, effectively tackling climate change demands a multifaceted approach where sustainable solutions are the bedrock of its edifice. The transition to renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, not only curtails the planet-warming greenhouse gases but also serves as a fulcrum for job creation and catalyses economic prosperity. Investment in energy-efficient technologies and the fostering of a culture of energy conservation become pivotal steps in mitigating the carbon footprint that engulfs us. But for that to happen quickly, wealthy nations and multinational corporations need to share green technologies with vulnerable societies honestly.

Agriculture provides livelihoods for 2.5 billion people and is the largest source of income and jobs for poor, rural households. In developing countries, agriculture accounts for 29 per cent of GDP and 65 per cent of jobs. In developing nations, agrarian communities battle the ravages of erratic rainfall patterns that disrupt agricultural cycles, thrusting them into the jaws of abject food insecurity.

There is an urgent need for free access to climate-smart technologies, such as drought-resistant seeds and efficient irrigation systems, to empower vulnerable farmers to adapt to the ceaseless mutations of their ecological tapestries.

The need of the hour is collaborative synergies between governments, non-governmental organisations, and communities that will engender adaptation initiatives that remain firmly rooted in local realities, thus maximising efficacy.

Moreover, the preservation and restoration of fragile ecosystems emerge as milestones in mitigating climate change. Another tried and tested method is: rewilding. Taking a step back and allowing nature to heal itself naturally is the most logical step. Rewilding mitigates climate change by restoring ecosystems, reviving wildlife, and enhancing biodiversity. These rejuvenated ecosystems act as carbon sinks, effectively sequestering CO2, regulating the global carbon cycle, and reducing emissions.

Shielding forests, mangroves, and other natural habitats not only safeguards biodiversity but also serves as a bulwark against the inexorable march of carbon dioxide. Reforestation endeavours and sustainable land management practices emerge.

Heavy rains lashed Italy's northern Emilia Romagna region on Wednesday causing deadly floods that claimed the lives of at least 11 people, said a local official.

Eight bodies had been recovered from various locations, the vice president of Emilia-Romagna, Irene Priolo, told reporters, adding that the rains were easing but that river levels were still rising.

As a part of a huge rescue operation involving emergency service and armed forces, the bodies were recovered by divers on Wednesday.

"Overall in Forli, there were three victims, one in Cesena and one in Cesenatico," which could be a German man previously reported missing, the official said.

Heavy rains lashed Italy's northern Emilia Romagna region on Wednesday causing deadly floods that claimed the lives of at least 11 people, said a local official.

"The city is on its knees, devastated and in pain," said Gian Luca Zattini, the mayor of Forli, a city near Bologna where three people lost their lives. "It's the end of the world." Emilia Romagna, which is also known as one of the richest regions of Italy, was hit by deadly rains just a fortnight ago causing floods that killed at least two people. Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said that this time, around 50 centimetres (20 inches) of rain fell within 36 hours in Forli, Cesena and Ravenna, which is around half the normal annual rainfall. He described it as a situation "with few precedents". "It is still a very critical situation," he said, adding that while the rain was still falling, it was expected to lighten during the day. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took to Twitter and lent her support for those affected and said the government was "ready to intervene with the necessary aid". In collegamento con il Comitato operativo della Protezione Civile presieduto dal Ministro Musumeci e il presidente della Regione Emilia-Romagna, Stefano Bonaccini. Formula One released a statement saying that after the high-level discussions following the devastation caused by the floods in the region, "the decision has been taken not to proceed with the Grand Prix weekend at Imola". "The decision has been taken because it is not possible to safely hold the event for our fans, the teams and our personnel and it is the right and responsible thing to do given the situation faced by the towns and cities in the region," it added. "It would not be right to put further pressure on the local authorities and emergency services at this difficult time." (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

A study has revealed that the media's coverage of climate research is, to a large extent, carried out in a way that doesn't provoke action. It claims that the media coverage doesn't inspire the pro-environmental behaviours needed to address the problem. The study has been published in the Global Environmental Change scientific journal. Thus, they said it is essential to emphasise potential solutions and inspire a sense of empowerment to address the issue, rather than solely focusing on the negative impacts of climate change.
