Police probe Twitter claim over fire at Rohingya camp in Delhi

<p>Over 40 houses were gutted in a fire that broke out at Kaishani village of Shimla district in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.</p>

<p>The fire spread fast and engulfed a large number of heavily timbered old houses with traditional wood carving. Villagers ran out of their homes in panic as the blaze swept.</p>

<p>The villagers fought the flames and stopped the fire from spreading to a cluster of about 150 houses. However, around 35 to 40 houses were completely gutted by the time the fire engines from Rohroo and Kotkhai arrived at the spot.</p>

<p>The locals helped in dousing the fire by the time fire tenders reached the spot. SDM Ghanshyam Sharma said fire tenders were also rushed from Kotkhai and the fire was contained by daybreak.</p>

<p>No casualty has been reported so far, according to sources.</p>

<p>The blaze, suspected to have started in a wooden house, gradually engulfed adjoining houses, majority of which were also made of wood, reports said.</p>

<p>The blaze started at the Raja Park factory in Sultanpuri around 6.35 am. There were around a dozen labourers inside the factory when the fire broke out, the Delhi Fire Service officials said.</p>

<p>A fire allegedly set during an attempted jailbreak from Venezuelan police holding cells killed 68 people on Wednesday, the country's top prosecutor and an inmates' rights group said.</p>

<p>The blaze at the detention facility in Carabobo state is the latest in a series of deadly incidents in Venezuela's overcrowded jails.</p>

<p>"In light of the terrible events that took place in the Carabobo state police headquarters, where 68 people died in a presumed fire, we have appointed four prosecutors... to clarify these dramatic events," chief prosecutor Tarek William Saab said on Twitter.</p>

<p>Carlos Nieto, head of Una Ventana a la Libertad (A Window on Freedom), said that "some burned to death and others asphyxiated" after setting fire to mattresses and stealing a guard's gun in an attempt to break out.</p>

<p>The dead included two women thought to have been visiting the jail at the time of the incident, Nieto said.</p>

<p>Rafael Lacava, the governor of Carabobo state, expressed his "consternation" over the events but did not provide a toll.</p>

<p>"A serious and profound investigation has been initiated to find the causes and those responsible for these regrettable events," he said on Twitter, expressing solidarity with relatives of those who died.</p>

<p>Relatives of those being kept in the detention centre tried to force their way into Carabobo state police headquarters. After one officer was injured by a stone, the crowd was dispersed by police firing tear gas.</p>

<p>Rescuers said billowing smoke, sometimes so dense it obscured the 22-floor Waterfront Manila Pavilion, had hampered their efforts to contain the blaze which started Sunday morning.</p>

<p>The dead were all casino employees, and another of the workers was still in critical condition. About 20 people were injured.</p>

<p>Thirteen people including children were killed and 20 others injured Tuesday when a Turkish passenger bus burst into flames after colliding with a truck in northern Anatolia, state media reported. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The bus, which was travelling from Istanbul to the northern city of Tokat, hit the truck on a motorway in Corum province early in the morning, according to the government-run Andalou news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Medical teams and fire engines rushed to the scene. Pictures showed that the bus had been reduced to a burnt-out shell by the fire that erupted after the crash.</p>

<p>The local governor&#39;s office said the truck was parked on the motorway hard shoulder when the bus hit. It added that an investigation had been launched into the accident.</p>

The vessel reported an explosion and fire on board and requested immediate assistance.</p>

<p>The ship was at a distance of 570 km (340 nautical miles) from Agatti in the Lakshwadeep Islands. The Coast Guard has pressed into action its assets for the rescue operation, it said. &ldquo;The ship had 27 crew members on board, of whom four are missing. Out of the 27 crew members, 13 are Indians including the captain of the ship,&rdquo; the ICG said.</p>

<p>After getting information about the mishap, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai immediately alerted all the merchant ships near the location through the satellite-based communication network, the International Safety Net (ISN), ICG said.</p>

<p>The ICGS Shoor, patrolling near Lakshadweep Islands was diverted to assist the distressed vessel. ICGS Shoor is an Offshore patrol vessel with specialised fire fighting equipment on board.</p>

<p>&ldquo;The search operations are on and the Coast Guard assets have been pressed into action,&rdquo; said Inspector General K R Nautiyal, the commander of the Coast Guard West region. &ldquo;It is our priority to save and rescue the four missing crew and also continue our efforts to salvage the vessel with the assistance of specialised vessels, which are being arranged,&rdquo; he added.</p>

<p>The Delhi police also arrested the alleged co-owner of the factory, Lalit Goyal, on Friday and handed him over to the Crime Branch, which is probing the case.</p>

<p>On January 25, the court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Lalit Goyal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Goyal, in his plea before the court, had claimed that he was just a servant in the factory and was neither named in the FIR nor was he present in the factory at the time of the fire.</p>
