FIFA World Cup: US journalist ‘detained’ at Qatar stadium for sporting rainbow shirt

Defender Andreas Cornelius hit the post and Denmark had a late penalty appeal turned down, while Tunisia wasted two clear chances in a 0-0 draw in their World Cup Group D opener at Education City Stadium on Tuesday. Tunisia were roared on by their sizeable following in the 42,925 crowd, whose deafening whistles and roars gave energy to their side and helped secure what had seemed an unlikely point before kickoff.

Denmark thought they should have had a penalty in stoppage time for handball that was checked at the VAR screen by referee Cesar Arturo Ramos, but he instead gave a free kick to Tunisia for a foul in the build-up.

Denmark would have hoped to create more chances in the game, but their best came late in the second half when Cornelius only had to nod the ball over the line at the back post but instead flicked it onto the woodwork.

Soccer federations who had planned to wear the 'OneLove' armbands to make a statement against discrimination during the World Cup in Qatar were faced with "extreme blackmail" that led to dropping the planned action, the German Football Association (DFB) said on Tuesday. ‘We didn't expect to start like this...’ – Lionel Messi on Argentina’s shock World Cup defeat

When Lionel Messi calmly put the ball in the net from the penalty spot against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, it seemed business as usual for Argentina. The Latin American giants featured in almost every list of teams favoured to win the FIFA World Cup 2022 trophy and against a side ranked 51st in the world, Messi & Co were heavily favoured to run riot. However, it seemed like no one gave Saudi Arabia the script as the Asian powerhouse produced a performance to remember with goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari guiding them to the most memorable win in their history.

RECORDS AND CONTROVERSIES

With a forward line boasting of mega stars like Messi, Angel Di Maria and Lautaro Martinez, Argentina had no difficulties in controlling the game from the very first kick. They kept attacking the Saudi defense with quick passing and the breakthrough finally came as Saud Abdulhamid wrestling Leandro Parades to the ground inside the penalty area. Messi had no difficulties in opening the account for his side and becoming the first Argentine player to score four goals in four World Cups.

However, it was the penalty decision was not without its controversies. It once again sparked the VAR’s inconsistency when it comes to deciding penalty decisions in case of player scuffles. Portuguese legend Figo compared the foul to a similar one committed against Harry Maguire during England’s game against Iran and even went on to say that it is completely fair in a “contact sport”.

TRAPPED AT THE BACK

The goal further bolstered Argentina’s confidence and over the next 30 minutes, the ball ended up in the Saudi net three times. However, none of them officially counted as the Argentine attackers were judged offside every time. While the press from Argentina seemed almost constant, Saudi Arabia stuck to the strategy that has become a trademark of manager Herve Renard.

Despite conceding an early goal, the four Saudi defenders - Saud Abdulhamid, Hassan Tambakti, Ali Al-Bulayhi and Yasser Al-Shahrani – kept holding a very high line and that meant the opposition forwards were constantly kept in doubt regarding their positioning at the start of an attack. The plan worked as Argentina were left frustrated as they were caught offside eight times within 45 minutes.

TEN MINUTES OF GENIUS

With Argentina going all out for the second goal, the Saudi attackers started finding spaces against the full backs Nahuel Molina and Nicolas Tagliafico. There were a couple of tame attempts in the first half, but Al Hilal striker Shehri suddenly found himself in an advantageous position against center back Christian Romero. The striker successfully went past Romero from the left and a well-placed shot was enough to beat Emiliano Martinez and spark wild celebrations among the fans.

The Saudi fans seemed to have found their voice for the first time in the game and the sound almost felt like a catalyst for their national team. Five minutes later, the unthinkable happened. Dawsari received the ball on the edge of the penalty box and was able to dodge past two Argentina defenders. With De Paul lunging for a tackle, he took a curling right foot shot and as if in slow motion, it sailed past Martinez’s outstretched hands and landed in the bottom corner of the goal.

OVERDEPENDANCE AND PURE GRIT

This was not supposed to happen, and Argentina seemed totally unprepared for this situation. The overdependence on the attacking trio meant that nearly all attacks had a set pattern and with Saudi players sitting deep, almost all passings channels were affected. Both Paredes and De Paul failed to make proper runs into the Saudi penalty box and although the introduction of Marcos Acuna in place of Tagliafico did boost the wing play, Argentina faced a new challenge - Mohammed Al-Owais.

The Saudi goalkeeper did not have much to do in the first half despite Argentina launching multiple attacks. Officially, the first shot on goal for Argentina came just before the 60-minute mark in the game if we do not count Messi’s penalty. The compact setting on the central defence meant that Argentina were forced to rely mainly on crosses and headers to attack his goal but Al-Owais was up to the challenge. Both Messi and substitute Julian Alvarez had chances to level the score towards the end of the match, but the Saudi goalkeeper held his ground and ended up making four crucial saves.

It was, by no stretch, a bad performance by Argentina. However, in front of the discipline and grit of Saudi Arabia, Messi and Co seemed almost clueless while trying to come up a viable Plan B.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 is off to a flier. While Argentina lost their opener versus Saudi Arabia, England started off with a bang. On Monday (November 21), the English side locked horns with Iran in Group B and the encounter saw the Harry Kane-led side thrash Iran 6-2.

During the start of the clash, at the Khalifa International Stadium, a huge controversy broke out when Iran national team chose to remain silent and not sing their national anthem. All of the starting 11 players stood there silently with the anthem being played whereas even their fans, in the stands, backed the players and kept chanting "Woman, Life, Freedom". The silent protest is a result of the disturbance back home due to the hijab row.

As per a report, it seems the Iran players and fans are in trouble for not choosing to sing the national anthem. FIFA World Cup: Iran team in trouble, may face arrest for not singing national anthem vs England

It took Lionel Messi just ten minutes to score his first goal in the ongoing FIFA World CUP 2022 as he opened the scoring for Argentina in their opening clash against Saudi Arabia at the Lusail Stadium in Lusail, Qatar. Messi opened the scoring for the Albiceleste after midfielder Leonardo Paredes was brought down inside the box by Saudi Arabia's Al Bulayahi.

Messi was calm and composed as he sent the Saudi Arabian goalkeeper to the wrong side by slotting the ball into the bottom right corner in what was an amazing finish. The Argentine legend equalled arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup record with the opener as he extended his tally to seven goals. Both Ronaldo and Messi have scored seven goals each for their respective countries in the World Cup so far. Not only this, but Messi also became the first Argentine to score in four world cups.

Meanwhile, at half-time Argentina - the hot favourites for the World Cup, are leading 1-0. Messi and co just didn't put the ball in the net once but four times, unfortunately, all getting ruled out due to off-side. Of those, two were netted by striker Lautaro Martinez and one by Lionel Messi. With more than 60% possession in the first half, Argentina was all over Saudi Arabia.

Things took a surprising turn at the beginning of the second half when Saudi Arabia equalled the scoreline in the 48th through Saleh Alshehri's strike. Just when Argentina looked like preparing for a comeback, they were jolted with yet another quick goal from Salem Aldawsari, and out of nowhere, Saudi Arabia was seen leading Argentina 2-1.

FIFA 2022: Lionel Messi equals Cristiano Ronaldo's World Cup record with penalty against Saudi Arabia

In what can be deemed the mother of all upsets, Saudi Arabia defeated the tournament favourites Argentina 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup 2022 at the Lusail stadium in Lusail, Qatar on Tuesday. Lionel Messi opened the scoring for the South American giants by hitting a penalty in the 10th minute - thus equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's world cup record of seven goals. With this, he also became the first player from Argentina to score in four World Cups.

After clearly dominating the first half with three disallowed goals and 64% possession, Argentina looked all but set to beat Saudi Arabia. However, things took a surprising turn at the start of the second half when Saudi Arabia's Saleh Alshehri equalised with a goal in the 48th minute to make it 1-1. Four minutes later came a moment that shook the whole world as a quick goal from Salem Aldawsari made it 2-1 for Saudi Arabia.

The Argentinian side looked shocked like everyone but didn't drop their shoulders down. Until the last moment, they kept pushing for that one goal. Even after eight extra minutes past the regular time, the former champions couldn't score and thus lost the match, sending shockwaves all over.

With this massive win, Saudi Arabia became the first non-European team to beat Argentina at the FIFA World cup since Cameroon in 1990. Meanwhile, Argentina's next matches are against Mexico on Sunday, November 27th, and against Poland on Thursday, December 1st.

FIFA World Cup 2022 Broadcast TV and OTT-Live Streaming: When and where to watch France vs Australia?

Is this about football? Is this about cricket? Or is it about something bigger, larger and more profound?

Being kicked around is not a good thing, unless you are a lifeless piece of leather dancing at the feet of international heroes in one of the world's greatest sporting shows. And that could be one of the messages from Qatar, where a loud silence in a crowded stadium, a controversial Islamist preacher wanted by Indian police and a probing media entity looking at the dirt behind the razzmatazz are making things more political that an average soccer lover might expect from the FIFA World Cup tournament.

'What do they know of cricket, who cricket only know?' is a popular quote from Trinidadian cricket philosopher C.L.R. James. The writer used cricket to highlight aspects of racism, colonialism and the subjugation and injustice of people associated with the game. Cricket is often a metaphor for fair play but the creators of the game, the English, have had to face the backlash associated with their colonial rule that took the sport to the rest of the world. During the World Cup cricket tournament in India in 1996, race differences came to the fore when it was reported that fancied West Indies did not entirely mind losing controversially to Kenya, because, after all, it was a non-white team. This was the high point of Mike Marquesee's fascinating cultural look at the 1996 World Cup, 'War Minus The Shooting' whose title is based on George Orwell's description of international sport.

I need to stop myself from reeling off a number of political instances relating to cricket, a game I am more familiar with, and instead paraphrase the legendary cricket saying for the Qatar event: 'What do they know of football, who football only know?'

Eyebrows and hackles went up in India as Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, accused by law enforcers of money laundering and hate speeches, was photographed during the World Cup as a side show of the tournament as a special invitee of Qatar. Naik is a fugitive who has been given permanent residence in Malaysia, but is himself barred from making speeches there. Enough said.

A clue as to why Qatar wants to showcase the controversial preacher and his brand of Islam might come from a research project at US-based Duke University that chronicles links between football and politics.

The project notes that Argentina's military dictators used the 1978 World Cup to show the rest of the world that all was hunky-dory under their strongarm rule. It seems Qatar now wants to show to the rest of the Muslim world that it is more Islamic than Saudi Arabia, with whom it has a rivalry described as the "New Arab Cold War." This more-Muslim-than-thou attitude, from what I can gather, must be aimed by Doha at increasing its influence in the Gulf region, even as it steps on the toes of India, and indeed, the rest of South Asia, where Zakir Naik is widely seen as having influenced radical Islamist violence. Or maybe, just maybe, the Islamist air cover and a ban on beer in the stadia may be just a way for Qatar to opiate Muslim masses and divert their attention from the celebratory decadence in richly built infrastructure. WhatsApp forwards are showing pretty women from various nationalities cheering footballers in Qatar, with their faces and much else uncovered. In case you missed it, whisky and champagne will be available at hospitality areas during the World Cup, and beer will be available in downtown Doha at the FIFA Fan Festival. Hic!

But where there is cold diplomacy and barely undercover partying, there is also poignant politics, if there is something that can be described thus.

As Iran's football team stood in silent defiance, refused the sing their own national anthem even as they readied to play for their country, it was an elegant rebellion against Teheran's Islamic regime whose state-authorised moral police has triggered widespread anti-hijab protests by students, artists, and as it turns out now, popular sportspeople.

Now, consider this: A research paper in the American Economic Review, citing sub-Saharan examples, said two years ago that the success of a national team can be a useful tool in nation-building because "millions of people are able to set aside differences in politics, religion and identity and choose to lock horns in support of their national team."

It becomes fascinating when you learn that the authors of the research paper were from Brazil, Argentina and Italy, who as economists sunk their childhood soccer rivalries to methodically discuss the sport-politics link, drawing from their own personal experiences. What happened in Qatar is, more fascinatingly, a case of a people sinking their differences and forgetting their fears to unite and rise against their own government's oppressive politics.

The Duke University project notes that sport, especially football, was used in the 1930s to 1950s period by dictatorial regimes in Europe as a mechanism to show others in the continent that they were successful. What the Iranian team has done is the opposite: It showcased the failure of their own government. This is a bit like India winning the World Cup cricket in 1983 in the soil of their former colonial masters. Tables turn, and sport becomes an arena of historic upheavals. But it doesn't help Iran's anti-government protesters when their team loses badly to England, as they did at the Khalifa stadium. Winners carry more political weight.

While Iranians staged silent protests and Qatari authorities mixed and unmixed beer and football, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) decided to focus on the treatment of migrant workers, corruption in FIFA and the ban on homosexuality in the Arab country. Is the BBC an extension of UK's foreign policy? Or is this a case of a jealous media company snidely snubbing its homegrown Qatari rival Al Jazeera? Or is this, simply put, real journalism that focuses on the dark truths behind a glitzy event?

Perhaps it is a mix of all three. What is more real is that politics and sport are interconnected in ways that go beyond the obvious matches at the World Cup.

Politics, after all, is the ultimate kick for many. And it is a goal for some. The cup runneth over.

(Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer.)

FIFA World Cup 2022 Broadcast TV and OTT-Live Streaming: When and where to watch Mexico vs Poland?

FIFA World Cup 2022 is already inundated with controversies, and the Iran versus England match on the day 2 of the megaevent was no exception. The Iranian Team apparently declined to sing their national anthem before their World Cup match against England. All of the starting 11 players stood there silently as the anthem was being played at the Khalifa International Stadium. Even Iranian fans in the crowd seemed to be appreciating their gesture, who kept chanting "Woman, Life, Freedom". State TV in Iran urgently interrupted its anthem coverage and switched to a previously shown wide shot of the stadium.

Why did the Iranian team not sing their national anthem?

Apparently, the Iranian team didn’t sing their national anthem to express their support for the ongoing anti-governmental civilian protests back at home. So far, around 400 people have been killed in the protests while around 17,000 people have been arrested by the authorities in a nationwide crackdown. Iran's captain Ehsan Hajsafi stated before the game that the team "support" those who have been killed by the authorities. Previously, critics of the Iranian government had levelled allegations that the Iranian football team was supporting the ruthless Iranian government, which also met President Ebrahim Raisi last week.

Why is Iran witnessing massive civilian uprising?

The protests sparked in September, when Iran’s so-called morality police killed a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Amini for allegedly breaking the rules over head covering. Many experts believe that the protests are among the biggest challenges faced by the Iranian theocratic government since the Iranian revolution of 1979.

What the Iranian government says?

The Iranian government is simply blaming foreign enemies for the massive protests that have engulfed the nation for over 2 months. But the enemies have a new trick every day, and with today's defeat, they may target different classes such as workers and women.”

What lies ahead for the Iranian team?

More protests are expected to be held by the Iranian football team. FIFA World Cup: 'We feel this is...' - England to take a knee in their tournament opener vs Iran

England, Wales, and five other countries taking part in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 were planning to defy FIFA's guidelines with their captains set to wear 'OneLove' armbands expressing their support for the LGBTQ community. However, the seven countries have now been forced to ditch the move after pressure from FIFA.

England, Wales, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland on Monday announced their captains won't be wearing the special armbands after FIFA warned them of disciplinary action. The football associations of the seven countries released a joint statement expressing their disappointment over the world football governing body's decision.

FIFA had warned the associations that the captain who takes the field with the 'OneLove' armbands will be booked and receive a yellow card even before the start of the game. The yellow card threat has forced these countries to step back as a booking for the captain would affect their results on the pitch.

"FIFA has been very clear that it will impose sporting sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field of play. As national federations, we can’t put our players in a position where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands in Fifa World Cup games," the seven countries said in a joint statement.

"We were prepared to pay fines that would normally apply to breaches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. However, we cannot put our players in the situation where they might be booked or even forced to leave the field of play," they added.

The seven countries had written to FIFA earlier this year asking for permission to wear the 'OneLove' armbands to express their support for the LGTQ community. However, their plea was met with no response from FIFA. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, a nation, which has been on the receiving end of intense criticism over its human rights record.

The football associations of the seven countries said they were 'very frustrated' by FIFA's decision and that it has left their players and coaches disappointed.

"We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways."

Reacting to FIFA's yellow card threat to teams planning to go ahead with the special bands, Amnesty International slammed the world football's governing body for failing to uphold its own values and responsibilities by imposing sanctions on teams standing up for a cause.

"Last minute threats to sanction players for wearing messages in support of human rights and equality is the latest example of FIFA failing to fully uphold its own values and responsibilities," said Steve Cockburn, the head of Amnesty International’s Economic and Social Justice.

"Sport does not happen in a vacuum and these are issues on which FIFA should be leading, not cracking down on. Agreements on armbands, and better protections for LGBTI communities, should have been reached a long time ago," he added.

Also Read: FIFA World Cup: 'We feel this is...' - England to take a knee in their tournament opener vs Iran The football associations of the seven countries said they were 'very frustrated' by FIFA's decision and that it has left their players and coaches disappointed. "We are very frustrated by the Fifa decision which we believe is unprecedented – we wrote to Fifa in September informing them of our wish to wear the One Love armband to actively support inclusion in football, and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed – they are strong supporters of inclusion and will show support in other ways." Reacting to FIFA's yellow card threat to teams planning to go ahead with the special bands, Amnesty International slammed the world football's governing body for failing to uphold its own values and responsibilities by imposing sanctions on teams standing up for a cause.

England, Wales & 5 other countries to ditch 'OneLove' armbands in World Cup after FIFA's yellow card warning

England absolutely decimated Iran in their FIFA World Cup 2022 opener to get off to a flying start in the tournament. Bukayo Saka bagged a magnificent brace while the likes of Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Jude Bellingham, and Jack Grealish scored a goal apiece to help power England to a thumping 6-2 win at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Iran were a no match to England's attacking prowess and received a proper hammering as their defence failed to cope with the pace of Saka and Sterling in the first half. After Harry Maguire nearly gave England the lead with his powerful header hitting the cross-bar, Bellingham rose to the occasion to bag his first goal for the country in a World Cup.

The highly-rated midfielder timed his jump to perfection to latch on to a cross from Luke Shaw and beat the Iran keeper comfortably to put his side 1-0 up in the game. Saka scored his first eight minutes later to make it 2-0 before Sterling slotted one home on a cross from captain Harry Kane in the first-half stoppage time.

Mehdi Taremi pulled one back for Iran three minutes later and scored another consolation goal in the stoppage time before the full-time whistle in what was a disappointing night for his country. In a stadium of their own, migrant workers say their sweat made World Cup happen in Qatar

The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition finally kicked off in Qatar on November 20. While the mega event was eagerly awaited, a lot of things have made the headlines off the field en route to the tournament's commencement. A lot has been said and written about Qatar's human rights violations and many have slammed the Middle East country, with ex-FIFA President Sepp Blatter also admitting that it was a mistake to award the hosting rights to a country like Qatar.

Nonetheless, the West's reporting of Qatar has made heads turn at regular intervals prior to the FIFA WC's opener. It is to be noted that the BBC relegated the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony to the "Red Button" service and online. However, BBC One went ahead by not airing the ceremony live by maintaining its stance on Qatar's orthodox viewpoint on the LGBTQ community and notorious history of human rights violations.

Is it Western hypocrisy?

FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently slammed the West's reporting and said in his first press conference in Doha ahead of the World Cup, "This moral lesson-giving -- one-sided -- is just hypocrisy. I don't want to give you any lessons of life, but what is going on here is profoundly, profoundly unjust." He added, "For what we Europeans have been doing for the last 3,000 years we should apologise for the next 3,000 years before starting to give moral lessons to people."

"Today I feel Qatari, today I feel Arab, today I feel African, today I feel gay, today I feel disabled, today I feel a migrant worker," said the FIFA president said while defending Qatar.

It isn't a hidden fact how many Western countries have also been a part of the problem, showing their dominance over developing or poorer countries as well as incidents of racism, slavery, etc. being highlighted for one and all.

It is known that England is taking a knee with regard to supporting the Black Lives Matter movement in the Qatar World Cup. In September 2020, former West Indies pacer Michael Holding slammed England and Australia for choosing when to take a knee. After the West Indies tour of England, where both teams took a knee before proceedings, the then Joe Root-led England didn't take a knee in their following home series versus Pakistan and Australia. Back then, Holding blasted at England Cricket Board (ECB) and Australian captain Aaron Finch while speaking his heart out in Sky Sports.

Holding told, "Now that the West Indies team has gone home, that doesn't mean that you still shouldn't be respecting the message and exactly what it stands for. If you go back to when taking a knee started and what it stood for, or stands for, it goes back to Colin Kaepernick in America, who took a knee because he wanted to bring attention to the racism and police brutality against people of colour in that country. Yes, it is more acute in the United States than in most other places but people around the entire world took on the mantle of spreading the word and getting this message out that it is time for equality and time for equal justice, and all that."

The former pacer said, "So everybody, all over the world, whether you are black, white, brown, pink or green - you saw the demonstrations all over the world. It was no longer just a black versus white thing; it was a matter of humanity coming together and saying 'listen, we need everyone to be treated equally. So for Pakistan and England not to then take that signal - because you are not doing anything other than going down on one knee - you are not chanting anything, you are not saying anything, all you are doing is making a signal to keep the awareness going. Neither team did it and the ECB came out with a pretty lame statement, as far as I am concerned."

The question to be asked here is how come the England football team is taking a knee -- when they do it selectively in Premier League fixtures -- during Qatar World Cup but their senior men's cricket team didn't during their Pakistan tour, T20 World Cup, etc.

Is the West trying to make a statement in Qatar or just adding fuel to fire in a country which already has a troubled history with many human right issues?

Yes, it is more acute in the United States than in most other places but people around the entire world took on the mantle of spreading the word and getting this message out that it is time for equality and time for equal justice, and all that." The former pacer said, "So everybody, all over the world, whether you are black, white, brown, pink or green - you saw the demonstrations all over the world. Neither team did it and the ECB came out with a pretty lame statement, as far as I am concerned." The question to be asked here is how come the England football team is taking a knee -- when they do it selectively in Premier League fixtures -- during Qatar World Cup but their senior men's cricket team didn't during their Pakistan tour, T20 World Cup, etc. Is the West trying to make a statement in Qatar or just adding fuel to fire in a country which already has a troubled history with many human right issues?

The Western hypocrisy? Glaring instances which might prove FIFA president Gianni Infantino right

Ecuador eased past World Cup debutants Qatar 2-0 on Sunday with two goals from veteran striker Enner Valencia in a first opening game defeat for a host nation in the tournament's history.

Ecuador's all-time top scorer, nicknamed "Superman" at home, scored an early penalty and added a well-taken 31st-minute header to give the South Americans a commanding first-half lead as the Qataris looked overcome by the enormity of the occasion.

It could have been even worse for the hosts in front of a 67,372 crowd at the tent-shaped Al Bayt stadium had Valencia, 33, not had a third minute header disallowed for a marginal offside after goalkeeper Saad Alsheeb had flapped at the ball.

It was Alsheeb who later tripped Valencia when he was through on goal and then dived the wrong way as the Ecuadorean coolly dispatched the resulting penalty in the 16th minute.

For his second, Valencia was unmarked but still showed great technique to stoop and take Angelo Preciado's cross almost from behind him to head past Alsheeb again.

By the time Mexico reached Brazil for the 2014 edition of the tournament, there was no denying Ochoa as the first choice. Already a veteran with experiences in both the French and Spanish leagues, he started the campaign with a clean sheet against Cameroon, but his stardom will come against Brazil. Against an attack boasting on world class talents like Oscar and Neymar, he pulled off six saves – including a blinder against Fred – to earn a well-deserved point for his national team. Even the legendary Pele went on to compare him to England legend Gordon Banks for his saves.

The great run of form continued against Croatia as he quickly gained popularity due to his athletic saves and acute awareness. In the Round of 16, he once again faced the might of Netherlands and although Mexico lost due to a late penalty, Ochoa was a name that almost all football fans knew.

FIFA World Cup 2022: The enigma called Guillermo Ochoa

Ecuador captain Enner Valencia scored the first goal at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in the tournament opener at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Qatar. Valencia managed to find the back of the net inside just three minutes of kick-off as Ecuador locked horns with hosts Qatar in the first game of the tournament.

Valencia managed to get in a strong header on a brilliant pass from Felix Torres to put the ball in the back of the net and thought he had the first goal of the tournament after a terrible mistake from Qatar keeper Saad Al Sheeb. However, the goal was disallowed by VAR as Valencia was deemed off-side in the build-up.

However, Ecuador were arguably the better of the two teams on the pitch in the initial few minutes of the game and it didn't take them too long to go ahead as Valencia kept testing the Qatari defence with his solid runs forward. The Ecuador skipper managed to get on the scoresheet finally in the 16th minute after being awarded a penalty for a foul from Al Sheeb.

Valencia was brought down inside the box by the Qatar keeper after finding himself in a one-on-one situation in front of the goal. It was a terrible challenge from the Qatari keeper and Valencia made sure to punish the hosts for his mistake by slotting it home from the spot.

The Ecuador striker looked calm and composed as he tucked the ball in the bottom right corner to send Al Sheeb the wrong way and score the first goal of the competition.
