Romelu Lukaku has suffered a new hamstring injury less than a week after making his return to action for Inter Milan, the Serie A club said on Monday. In a statement, Inter said that Belgium striker Lukaku had picked up a "strain in the hamstring of his left thigh", the same muscle which kept him out of action for two months.

Inter added that the 29-year-old would be "reassessed in the next few days", and Italian media report that he is not yet at risk of missing the World Cup.

FIFA 2022: Qatar's Emir lashes out at criticism ahead of World Cup

Qatar has emptied apartment blocks housing thousands of foreign workers in the same areas in the centre of the capital Doha where visiting soccer fans will stay during the World Cup, workers who were evicted from their homes told Reuters.

They said more than a dozen buildings had been evacuated and shut down by authorities, forcing the mainly Asian and African workers to seek what shelter they could - including bedding down on the pavement outside one of their former homes.

The move comes less than four weeks before the Nov. 20 start of the global soccer tournament which has drawn intense international scrutiny of Qatar's treatment of foreign workers and its restrictive social laws.

At one building which residents said housed 1,200 people in Doha's Al Mansoura district, authorities told people at about 8 pm on Wednesday they had just two hours to leave.

Municipal officials returned around 10.30 pm, forced everyone out and locked the doors to the building, they said. Some men had not been able to return in time to collect their belongings.

"We don't have anywhere to go," one man told Reuters the next day as he prepared to sleep out for a second night with around 10 other men, some of them shirtless in the autumn heat and humidity of the Gulf Arab state.

He, and most other workers who spoke to Reuters, declined to give their names or personal details for fear of reprisals from the authorities or employers.

Nearby, five men were loading a mattress and a small fridge into the back of a pickup truck. They said they had found a room in Sumaysimah, about 40 km (25 miles) north of Doha.

A Qatari government official said the evictions are unrelated to the World Cup and were designed "in line with ongoing comprehensive and long-term plans to re-organise areas of Doha."

"All have since been rehoused in safe and appropriate accommodation," the official said, adding that requests to vacate "would have been conducted with proper notice."

World soccer's governing body FIFA did not respond to a request for comment and Qatar's World Cup organisers directed inquiries to the government.

Around 85% of Qatar's three million population are foreign workers. Many of those evicted work as drivers, day labourers or have contracts with companies but are responsible for their own accommodation - unlike those working for major construction firms who live in camps housing tens of thousands of people.

One worker said the evictions targeted single men, while foreign workers with families were unaffected.

A Reuters reporter saw more than a dozen buildings where residents said people had been evicted. Some buildings had their electricity switched off.

Most were in neighbourhoods where the government has rented buildings for World Cup fan accommodation. The organisers' website lists buildings in Al Mansoura and other districts where flats are advertised for between $240 and $426 per night.

The Qatari official said municipal authorities have been enforcing a 2010 Qatari law which prohibits "workers' camps within family residential areas" - a designation encompassing most of central Doha - and gives them the power to move people out.

Some of the evicted workers said they hoped to find places to live amid purpose-built workers' accommodation in and around the industrial zone on Doha's southwestern outskirts or in outlying cities, a long commute from their jobs.

The evictions "keep Qatar's glitzy and wealthy facade in place without publicly acknowledging the cheap labour that makes it possible," said Vani Saraswathi, Director of Projects at Migrant-Rights.org, which campaigns for foreign workers in the Middle East.

"This is deliberate ghetto-isation at the best of times. But evictions with barely any notice are inhumane beyond comprehension."

Some workers said they had experienced serial evictions. One said he was forced to change buildings in Al Mansoura at the end of September, only to be moved on 11 days later with no prior notice, along with some 400 others. "In one minute, we had to move," he said.

Mohammed, a driver from Bangladesh, said he had lived in the same neighbourhood for 14 years until Wednesday, when the municipality told him he had 48 hours to leave the villa he shared with 38 other people.

He said labourers who built up the infrastructure for Qatar to host the World Cup were being pushed aside as the tournament approaches.

"Who made the stadiums? Who made the roads? Who made everything? Bengalis, Pakistanis. People like us. Now they are making us all go outside."

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly sparked a major controversy on Wednesday as he advised LGBTQ+ football fans to show “compromise” and be “respectful of the host nation” while visiting Qatar for the FIFA World Cup 2022. The comment was rejected by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office.

“I have spoken to the Qatari authorities in the past about gay football fans going to watch the World Cup and how they will treat our fans and international fans. They want to make sure that football fans are safe, secure and enjoy themselves, and they know that that means they are going to have to make some compromises in terms of what is an Islamic country with a very different set of cultural norms to our own,” Cleverly told LBC Radio a day after he was included in the new UK cabinet.

“One of the things I would say for football fans is, you know, please do be respectful of the host nation. They are trying to ensure that people can be themselves and enjoy the football, and I think with a little bit of flex and compromise at both ends, it can be a safe, secure and exciting World Cup,” he added.

UK foreign secretary asks LGBTQ+ fans to 'compromise' at World Cup in Qatar

Australia's national soccer team spoke out against World Cup host Qatar's record on human rights and same-sex relationships in a video released on Thursday, adding to criticism of the country in the weeks ahead of the tournament.

Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, has come under intense international pressure for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws. The video, featuring several players delivering a message line by line, cited harm to Qatar's more than 1.6 million migrant workers and the status of same-sex relationships, which are illegal in the conservative gulf state.

"We have learned that the decision to host the World Cup in Qatar has resulted in the suffering and the harm of countless of our fellow workers," midfielder Jackson Irvine said. "As players we fully support the rights of LGBTI+ people, but in Qatar people are not free to love the person that they choose," said fellow midfielder Denis Genreau.

Qatari ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Tuesday said while some criticism was constructive, it also included fabrications and double standards. The Socceroos acknowledged reforms to date but called for more including a migrant resource centre, remedy for those denied rights and decriminalisation of all same-sex relationships.

A separate statement from Football Australia, the peak soccer body, on Thursday acknowledged reforms but said the games had been associated "with suffering for some migrant workers and their families." Disquiet over the country's human rights record has led to calls for teams and officials to boycott the games. The Dutch government confirmed last week it would send a delegation despite a parliamentary vote urging it not to.

Players expressed support for FIFPRO, a trade union for professional footballers, as well as worker groups the Building and Woodworkers International and the International Trade Union Confederation. Australia will play against France, Denmark and Tunisia after the World Cup kicks off on Nov. 20.

Australian players call out Qatar's human rights record before FIFA World Cup

Qatar has faced unprecedented criticism since winning the bid to host the 2022 World Cup, some of which amounted to slander, its ruler, Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, said on Tuesday.

"We initially dealt with the matter in good faith," Sheikh Tamim said in a televised policy speech, adding that some of the early criticism was constructive. But, he said, a campaign against Qatar expanded to "include fabrications and double standards that were so ferocious that it has unfortunately prompted many people to question the real reasons and motives behind the campaign".

Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, has come under intense international criticism for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws. The emir was addressing a session of the Gulf Arab state's advisory Shura Council as Doha gears up to host soccer's main global event, which kicks off on Nov. 20.

Qatar expects 1.2 million visitors during the tournament, creating an unprecedented logistical and policing challenge for the tiny Gulf Arab state. Sheikh Tamim said hosting the World Cup was "a great test for a country the size of Qatar". "We accepted this challenge out of our faith in our potential, we the Qataris, to tackle the mission and make it a success," he said. "It is a championship for all, and its success is success for all."

Doha has introduced reforms including rules to protect workers from heat and a monthly minimum wage of 1,000 riyals ($275), and says it continues to develop its labour system. Foreign workers account for 85% of the some 3 million population of Qatar, which is among the world's top natural gas producers and one of the wealthiest nations per capita.

Sheikh Tamim said higher energy prices had helped Qatar realise a government budget surplus of 47.3 billion riyals ($12.8 billion) for the first half of 2022, versus a projected deficit, and gross domestic product growth of 4.3%, according to initial estimates. "The budget surplus will be directed to reducing the level of public debt and increasing the state's financial reserves," he said. The World Cup would allow Qatar to showcase its economic and institutional strength and cultural identity, he said.

Security forces in Qatar arbitrarily arrested and abused LGBT Qataris as recently as last month, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Monday, in the run-up to hosting soccer's World Cup which has put a spotlight on human rights issues in the Gulf Arab state.

Homosexuality is illegal in the conservative Muslim country, and some soccer stars have raised concerns over the rights of fans travelling for the event, especially LGBT+ individuals and women, whom rights groups say Qatari laws discriminate against.

A Qatari official said in a statement that HRW's allegations "contain information that is categorically and unequivocally false," without specifying.

Organisers of the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 20 and is the first held in a Middle Eastern nation, say that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or background, is welcome, while also warning against public displays of affection.

"Freedom of expression and nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity should be guaranteed, permanently, for all residents of Qatar, not just spectators going to Qatar for the World Cup," HRW said in a statement.

The organisation said it had interviewed six LGBT Qataris, including four transgender women, one bisexual woman and one gay man, who reported being detained between 2019 and 2022 and subjected to verbal and physical abuse, including kicking and punching.

They were detained without charge in an underground prison in Doha, HRW said, and one individual was held for two months in solitary confinement.

"All six said that police forced them to sign pledges indicating that they would 'cease immoral activity'," it said, adding that transgender women detainees were mandated to attend conversion therapy sessions at a government-sponsored clinic.

Qatar does not "license or operate 'conversion centres'," the Qatari official said.

One of the transgender Qatari women interviewed by HRW told Reuters on condition of anonymity that she was arrested several times, most recently this summer when she was held for several weeks.

Authorities had stopped her due to her appearance or for possessing make-up, the woman said, adding that she had been beaten to the point of bleeding and had her head shaved.

The behaviour centre she was mandated to attend told the woman she had a gender identity disorder and accused her of being transgender in search of "sympathy from others".

"The last thing I want is sympathy, I just want to be myself," she said.

Argentina will head into the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 as one of the major title contenders considering the quality and experience in their ranks. While Lionel Messi will be looking to bow out with the elusive trophy in what is certain to be his last World Cup, Argentina also have the likes of Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala, and Lisandro Martinez among others in their squad making them one of the favourites.

Messi will once again spearhead Argentina's charge at the World Cup and will be hoping to clinch his second major international trophy after winning the Copa America last year to bag his maiden international title. While Argentina will head into the competition as one of the favourites, Messi believes the likes of France and Brazil will be top contenders for the title.

Messi was recently asked to name his favourites for the showpiece event in Qatar. While he believes the likes of England and Spain will also be favourites, the Argentinian put his money on Brazil and defending champions France.

"There are big teams like Brazil, Germany, France, England, Spain, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. But if I have to keep one or two, today I think Brazil and France are the two big candidates for this World Cup," said the Argentina maestro.

Explaining why he believes France and Brazil are top title contenders, Messi said both teams have a clear style of play and have the same coach for a long time now. Interestingly, Argentina defeated Brazil in the final of Copa America last year to win the trophy.

"They've had the same group (of players) for a long time, working well. France, aside from the last Euros when they were eliminated (in the last 16) and did badly, they have some impressive players. Messi will once again spearhead Argentina's charge at the World Cup and will be hoping to clinch his second major international trophy after winning the Copa America last year to bag his maiden international title. The world is eagerly counting down to the start of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. With millions of fans making their way to Qatar, many should also consider neighbouring Saudi Arabia as their destination instead. Saudi has already announced that it will allow multi-entry visas for the holders of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Hayya Card. Tourists who have gained their visa with the Hayya card can make their way to Saudi Arabia for up to 90-days in the country, starting 10-days before the tournament begins. The e-visa is also available for tourists from 49 eligible countries. Tourists can catch all their favourite matches in Qatar while staying in the comfort of the neighbouring country, as the Qatari capital Doha is only a 90-minute flight from Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Popular destinations in Saudi for tourists include the capital of Riyadh, where they can stay in luxurious hotels like the Four Seasons, The Ritz-Carlton, the Intercontinental, Fairmont and Shaza; Jeddah, which is fast becoming the hub of Saudi’s burgeoning art and music scene, and AlUla, which is home to Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the capital city of Riyadh, tourists can make their way to one of the tallest buildings in Saudi Arabia, the Kingdom Center Tower. From the Center Point observatory, tourists can see the sprawling city below. If shopping is in mind, then many malls like the glitzy Al Nakheel Mall, the elegant Riyadh Gallery Mall and the sprawling Hayat Mall can fulfil those needs. Cultural areas like King Abdullah Park where water and light shows can enthral visitors and the imposing clay-mudbrick Masmak Fortress are the places, which can’t be missed. The National Museum and the stunning Edge of the World are places to visit when trying to enjoy things at a slower pace. Tourists can enjoy a variety of cuisine like authentic Saudi food, traditional Japanese cuisine, Brazilian steakhouses and French-bistro style food at restaurants throughout the city. In the bustling hub of Jeddah, a visit to the Jeddah Corniche against the sea, also known as the Jeddah Waterfront, is a must for all visitors. A visit to the Fakieh Aquarium will introduce tourists to a variety of aquatic species. For shopping, Jeddah offers a throwback to the past with traditional markets like that in Al Balad and Gabel Street Souq, and modern shopping centres like the Mall of Arabia and Al Salam Mall. A trip to the city, however, won’t be complete without a visit to Nasseef House and Al Tayebat International City. The cuisine in Jeddah is vibrant with world-class seafood being served at almost every restaurant. Saudi Arabia will also be hosting a series of events during the World Cup, including music festivals, film festivals, sports festivals and more. MDLBeast, the biggest music festival ever seen in the Middle East, will coincide with the FIFA World Cup. The country has also prepared to host the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah. Tourists can also make their way to the annual entertainment and sports festival, Riyadh Season in the capital. However, if tourists are looking for cultural programmes instead then they can make their way to the Winter at Tantoura cultural festival in AlUla. All of these festivals and events will be taking place at the same time as the World Cup, giving tourists plenty of opportunities to enjoy other activities than just football during lulls between the matches. Increased Number of Flights from Qatar Travelling from Saudi Arabia to Qatar has never been easier for travellers wanting to explore the authentic home of Arabia. The country has increased the number of shuttle flights to 60 daily flights on the Saudi team’s match day and to 40 daily flights on other days during the FIFA World Cup. The flights will be taking off from both Jeddah and Riyadh. Saudi adventures await World Cup fans from around the world

Qatari landlords eyeing profit from the looming World Cup have been kicking out a growing number of mostly foreign tenants, sometimes with just a few days' notice. More than one million football fans are expected to descend on the capital Doha during the November-December tournament, putting a strain on the tiny Gulf nation.

Landlords who have spotted an opening to increase rents "show no pity" and the market is dominated by "greed", said a representative of a real estate company, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Reem, a foreigner working for a major Qatari company, was told she had a week to leave her apartment.

The woman, using a pseudonym to avoid blowback from her employer, told AFP the owner of the block wanted the dozens of apartments he has rented to her employers emptied so they could earn more during the World Cup.

"We felt humiliated," Reem said.

The company has moved Reem and other employees into a hotel, but they can only stay there until November 15, five days before the tournament kicks off. They were told they will then move into "temporary" apartments, she said.

"Leaving home with all our belongings in bags and boxes to go into a hotel room was a disaster."

Other tenants in Doha told AFP they were similarly forced to choose between paying more on rent or leaving.

Properties in the tower where Reem used to live are advertised on booking.com for $1,700 a night during the World Cup with a minimum stay of 14 nights.

In the two years she had been in the apartment, Reem said rent was $2,500 a month. Most fans will be staying in hotels, apartments, cruise ships and desert camps booked through the official World Cup portal.

Despite some concerns, organisers have insisted there will be enough accommodation for all fans in the emirate of just 2.8 million people. To ease the crunch, FIFA recently released thousands of hotel rooms it had reserved, which experts have said could push prices down in the coming weeks.

Some World Cup visitors are turning to the open market for luxury apartments or better locations near specific stadiums, and the prices advertised for some Doha properties highlight owners' sky-high hopes. On Airbnb, apartments for two people go for $2,500 a night.

A villa for the full 29 days of the World Cup will cost fans booking through the online platform at least $13,000 -- but prices can go into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some Doha residents are putting their flats and houses up for rent and fleeing Qatar for the month. Adel, who listed his small apartment on Airbnb for $900 a night, said that "demand was very high" when he first advertised it.

But he had to cancel the reservations after Airbnb asked him to provide a statement from his landlord approving the sublet. Rents have also risen sharply for tenants coming to the end of their leases in recent months.

While Qatari law allows for an increase of up to 10 percent for a lease renewal, rents in some districts of Doha have risen by as much as 40 percent over the past year, according to Anum Hassan, head of research in Qatar at international consultancy firm Valustrat.

A Western diplomat in Doha said embassy staff have demanded increased salaries to meet their rent payments.

"Rents... will stay high for a while," said Nabil Ghorra, a 59-year-old Lebanese-American who lives in Doha's upscale Pearl district.

"I feel that there are people taking advantage of the situation, but this happens all over the world when there's an event" like the World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup is a keenly-awaited event, which will be held in the Middle East for the first time ever. Qatar is set to play host to the 32-nation showpiece event which will see some big stars rub shoulders with each other and, hence, the excitement is on another level for football fans across the globe.

In the run-up to Qatar 2022, quite a lot of preparations are being made. On Wednesday (October 5), it was announced that the number of government workers attending offices would be cut down whereas schooling hours are also set to be reduced to ease congestion before and during the World Cup.

With in excess of one million visitors expected to be in Qatar for the big-ticket event, from November 20 to December 18, the government is eager to minimise the traffic on the streets around the eight stadiums. In this context, the authorities are worried about the opening two weeks when the number of foreign fans following the participating nations will peak.

An official spokesperson recently claimed that only 20 per cent of government staff would be expected in offices starting November and till December 19. In addition, the staff would work four hours a day. Not only this, from November 1 to November 17, school hours will also be brought down; i.e. opening only from 7 am to midday. Students will be on holiday from November 18 until December 22.

Rights group Open Stadiums have called on FIFA to throw Iran out of the World Cup in Qatar in November because of the country's treatment of women. In a letter sent to FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday (September 29), the organisation said Iranian authorities continued to refuse to allow female fans access to games inside the country despite pressure from the game's governing body.

"The Iranian FA is not only an accomplice of the crimes of the regime, it is a direct threat to the security of female fans in Iran and wherever our national team plays in the world. Football should be a safe space for us all," the letter said. "That is why, as Iranian football fans, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to raise our deepest concern about Iran's participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup."

"Why would FIFA give the Iranian state and its representatives a global stage, while it not only refuses to respect basic human rights and dignities, but is currently torturing and killing its own people? "Where are the principles of FIFA's statues in this regard? "Therefore, we ask FIFA, based on Articles 3 and 4 of its statutes, to immediately expel Iran from the World Cup 2022 in Qatar."

The articles cited cover the issues of human rights and non-discrimination based on gender, race, religion and other matters, with breaches punishable by suspension or expulsion from the global body. Neither FIFA nor Iran's FA immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment. The call comes as protests continued in several cities across Iran on Thursday against the death of young woman in police custody, state and social media reported, as a human rights group said at least 83 people had been killed in nearly two weeks of demonstrations.

Under pressure from Infantino, a small group of female fans were granted access to Persepolis's home leg of the 2018 Asian Champions League final in Tehran.

But there has been minimal progress since, with female fans barred from entering Iran's World Cup qualifying game against Lebanon in Mashad in March, with video emerging of female supporters being pepper sprayed outside the stadium. The Carlos Queiroz-coached national team played friendly matches during the recent international break against Uruguay and Senegal in Austria, with both games played behind closed doors over security concerns.

Iran are due to appear at their sixth World Cup finals and have been drawn to face England, Wales and the United States in Qatar.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 is set to get underway in Qatar in November this year but Google seems to have already predicted the two finalists of the tournament. In a weird mistake, the Google search engine showed Brazil and France as the two finalists of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar on Monday (September 26).

The World Cup final is set to be hosted by the Lusail Stadium in Qatar which is one of the biggest stadiums in the country. The Lusail Stadium is set to host a total of ten matches in the FIFA World Cup 2022, including one semi-final tie and the all-important final on December 18.

For a brief period on Monday, a search query of - 'Lusail Stadium events' showed Brazil vs France listed as the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 on December 18. While it remains unclear if it was a technical error on part of the search engine, the mistake was rectified within a few hours.

Knockout matches in football and other sports with no confirmed teams are usually displayed as 'TBC' on Google search. However, Brazil vs France listed as the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022 left many bewildered on social media as a screenshot of the search query and its results went viral.

While they are not certian to make it to the summit clash, France and Brazi remain two of the strongest contenders for the title at the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. Defending champions France have continued their dominance after lifting the slusive trophy in 2018 and have remarkable quality in their ranks to pull off a successfull World Cup defence this year.

English Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham says he has been told LGBTQ+ fans won't be arrested for holding hands or kissing in public at the World Cup in Qatar. The LGBTQ+ community had raised concerns over how safe they will be at the tournament in November-December as same-sex sexual activity is illegal in the Gulf state.

Some English LGBTQ+ fans will reportedly stay away from the World Cup because they have not received adequate assurances. But Bullingham revealed on Wednesday that he has been told police in Qatar are briefed to be tolerant during the tournament. Asked whether the FA had planned for the scenario of an England fan being arrested for holding hands or kissing a same-sex partner in public, Bullingham said: "We have been asking those questions of the Qatari authorities over the last six months.

"They have absolutely told us all the right answers for anything we've talked about, even down to the point of 'are rainbow flags allowed?' "Yes, absolutely (they are allowed) as long as someone doesn't go and drape them on the outside of a mosque - that was one example we were given - and were disrespectful in that way. "But they have absolutely been briefed to be very tolerant and act in the right way. Any time we ask a direct question we tend to get an answer."

Despite those assurances, FA chiefs are still requesting more detail from the local organising committee that all fans, including those from the LGBTQ+ community, will be safe and secure in Qatar. The FA has joined nine other European federations in joining the 'OneLove' anti-discrimination campaign.

England captain Harry Kane will wear a rainbow armband supporting the campaign at the World Cup. "As captains we may all be competing against each other on the pitch, but we stand together against all forms of discrimination," Kane said. "This is even more relevant at a time when division is common in society. Wearing the armband together on behalf of our teams will send a clear message when the world is watching."

Bullingham said the FA are also lobbying FIFA for an update regarding a compensation scheme for migrant workers in Qatar and the creation of a centre to help those workers access support.

"We continue to push for the principle of compensation for the families of migrant workers who have lost their lives or have been injured in construction projects," he said. "Again, we are pushing FIFA for an update on the compensation fund which has been consistently referenced as a safety net where workers and their families have been unable to secure compensation from the construction companies."

FA chief says LGBTQ+ fans won't face arrest for kissing at FIFA World Cup in Qatar

FIFA's partners and World Cup sponsors must urge world soccer's governing body and the Qatari government to compensate migrant workers who suffered while preparing the nation for the event, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and FairSquare said on Tuesday.

Qatar has faced intense criticism from human rights groups over its treatment of migrant workers, who along with other foreigners comprise the bulk of the country's population. Qatari authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters about the rights groups' report. The government of Qatar has said that its labour system is still a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited.

Last week, a YouGov survey of more than 17,000 fans from 15 countries -- 10 of them European -- commissioned by Amnesty showed 73% of respondents would support a proposal for FIFA to compensate migrant workers, while 10% opposed it.

Minky Worden, the director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, said that sponsors should use their "considerable leverage" to apply pressure on FIFA and Qatar to fulfill their responsibilities to workers.

"Brands buy rights to sponsor the World Cup because they want to be associated with joy, fair competition and spectacular human achievement on the field -- not rampant wage theft and the deaths of workers who made the World Cup possible," said Worden.

The three human rights organisations said they had written to FIFA's 14 corporate partners and World Cup sponsors in July and that four of them -- AB InBev/Budweiser, Adidas, Coca-Cola, and McDonald's had indicated their support for ensuring remedy for workers.

Ten other sponsors -- Visa, Hyundai-Kia, Wanda Group, Qatar Energy, Qatar Airways, Vivo, Hisense, Mengniu, Crypto and Byju's -- have not responded to written requests to discuss tournament-related abuses, the organisations said in a statement https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/09/20/fifa-world-cup-all-sponsors-should-back-remedies-workers.

In May, Amnesty and other rights groups had called on FIFA to earmark $440 million to compensate migrant workers in Qatar. FIFA said then that it was assessing Amnesty's proposition and that workers had received payments of a total $22.6 million as of December 2021, with an additional $5.7 million committed by contractors.

It added last week that a wide range of measures had been implemented in recent years to improve protection for workers in Qatar, which will host the World Cup from Nov. 20.

Brazil's national team coach currently finds himself in a feud with star forward Kylian Mbappe as he rejected the Frenchman's assessment of South American football, in which he claimed that the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup were much easier for teams from that part of the world due to a lack of quality competition as teams are not as advanced as those in Europe.

In a recent interaction with the media, Tite dismissed these claims, declaring that the matches between South American teams are much more difficult compared to those between European countries.

'No one gives a break'- Brazil boss slams Kylian Mbappe for claiming competition in the Americas is bleak

The World Cup in Qatar will kick off a day earlier than scheduled, governing body FIFA said on Thursday after its ruling bureau agreed unanimously to hold the opening ceremony and the host nation's first match on Sunday, November 20. The original plan was for the opening ceremony to be held before Qatar's game on Nov. 21 against Ecuador, which would have created the unusual situation of two matches — Senegal v Netherlands and England v Iran — being held before the ceremony.

Normally, the ceremony is conducted before the kick-off of the first game of the tournament. Hosts Qatar will now make their World Cup debut against Ecuador at 1900 local time after an opening ceremony at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium. The change is in line with the long-standing tradition of opening matches involving hosts or holders.

The Group A match between Senegal and Netherlands, originally scheduled to be the tournament opener, has been pushed back by six hours from 1300 local time on Nov. 21 to the 1900 slot vacated by Qatar v Ecuador. England's Group B match with Iran and the United States' opener against Wales, which are also scheduled for Nov. 21, remain unaffected by the change.

"The decision followed an assessment of the competition and operational implications, as well as a thorough consultation process and an agreement with key stakeholders and the host country," FIFA said.

The change stretches the World Cup to 29 days until the Dec. 18 final and comes after several rounds of ticket sales, with organisers having sold 1.8 million tickets so far. "Ticket holders will be duly notified by email that the relevant matches have been rescheduled and their tickets will remain valid irrespective of the new date/time," FIFA added.

"In addition, FIFA will seek to address any issues arising from this change in a case-by-case basis."

It will be the first World Cup staged in the Middle East and has been pushed back to later in the year than its typical June-July schedule to avoid the region's punishing summer heat.

FIFA moves Qatar World Cup start forward by a day, to kick off on November 20

Football fans worldwide may be in for a treat, considering how the biggest footballing event in the world is seemingly inching close faster than what fans were expecting. A report by Reuters suggests that FIFA has moved to prepone the highly anticipated World Cup by a day in addition to offering the host nation the tournament's first draw.

Should FIFA's ruling regarding the change in dates pass, fans will be able to enjoy the opening ceremony and Qatar's first game on Sunday, i.e. November 20th. In accordance with the new dates, the tournament will span from 20 November through to 18 December 2022. Per the previous schedule, the opening ceremony was set to take place before the Group A contest between Qatar and Ecuador on November 21st.

However, this created an extremely unusual situation considering how two games were scheduled to be played before the opening ceremony. The Group A game between the African champions Senegal and Netherlands and the Group B game between England and Iran were scheduled to take place before the opening ceremony even though it is customary for the ceremony to be held before all the action.

The plan to prepone the event was put in motion after Qatar expressed interest in opening the tournament as it has become the norm for the host country to kick off the action. However, the Bureau of the FIFA Council, consisting of president Gianni Infantino and the heads of the six FIFA regional confederations, needs to arrive at a consensus regarding the issue before a change in dates can be authorized.

The scheduled match between England and Iran and other Group B games will remain unaffected by the change of dates. However, the Senegal vs. Netherlands match will most likely face a short delay. Although the motion to change the dates was moved on short notice, it is expected to be agreed upon soon.

PSG looking to extend Lionel Messi's stay by a year, Argentina captain to decide post Qatar 2022: Report

All eyes are now on the forthcoming FIFA World Cup, to be held in Qatar later this year. Ahead of the mega event, which will be the first to be played in a Muslim country, Qatar's World Cup stadiums are set to be alcohol-free with beer sales outside arenas only allowed prior to and after the conclusion of some matches, a source with knowledge of plans for the football tournament revealed.

Thus, the alcohol ban can present a unique challenge for the organisers of the showpiece event as often fans can be seen enjoying their drinks sponsored by global brewing brands in such tournaments.

"At stadiums, the plans are still being finalised, but the current discussion is to allow fans to have beer upon arrival and when leaving stadium, but beer won't be served during the match or inside the stadium bowl," the source told Reuters.

Football's relationship with booze has long become a lot more tricky in recent times. For the unversed, in the lead up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil had to lift a ban on alcohol at stadiums owing to pressure from governing body FIFA.

There were dark clouds hovering over the availability of alcohols at this year's competition ever since the Gulf Arab state won the hosting rights in 2010. Nonetheless, it is believed that the fans will be able to buy beer during restricted times in certain parts of the main FIFA fan zone in the Al Bidda park in Doha, the Qatari capital. "Unlike previous World Cup fan zones, beer won't be served all day long, but at restricted times," the source added.

A spokesperson for the organisers -- Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy -- has pointed out that together with FIFA they will reveal the plans regarding alcohol availability "in due course".

"Alcohol is already available in designated areas in Qatar, such as hotels and bars, and this will not change in 2022. With the aim of catering to visiting fans in 2022, alcohol will be available in additional designated areas during the tournament," the spokesperson said.

The upcoming 32-nation World Cup will be the first to be held at the end of the calendar year in November and December. France will enter the tournament as the defending champions, beating Croatia 4-2 in last edition's final.

FIFA World Cup 2022: Stadiums to be alcohol-free for mega event in Qatar

This will be the first time that six countries from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will be taking part in a FIFA World Cup as the 2022 edition kicks off in Qatar later this year. The usual Asian heavyweights – Saudi Arabia, Iran, Australia, South Korea and Japan – have all booked their spot in the tournament while hosts Qatar will be making their debut. The six teams will also take strength from the fact that the last time Asia hosted the tournament back in 2022, South Korea reached the semi-finals while Japan made it to the Round of 16. With a few months to go ahead of FIFA World Cup 2022, here’s a look at the six AFC teams which will be taking part in the competition -

Australia

The Socceroos had the longest road to the FIFA World Cup 2022 as they defeated Peru on penalties in the inter-confederation play off. The campaign started on a superb note as they topped their first-round group with absolute ease. However, two losses against Japan and another one against Saudi Arabia meant that they had to face United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the fourth-round play-off. It was a hard-fought encounter but Australia were able to clinch the win by a late goal from Ajdin Hrustic. With 7 goals, Jamie Maclaren was the top scorer for them in the qualification process and although substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the star against Peru, Matt Ryan will play a major role in their campaign in Qatar. Things will get tougher for the Socceroos as they were placed in Group D where they will face dark horses Denmark, Tunisia and defending champions France.

Japan

Japan finished their first-round qualifying journey with 46 goals from just eight matches and in the second round, it was once again their attackers who guaranteed their seven consecutive FIFA World Cup appearance. The Blue Samurais did slump to defeats against Oman and Saudi Arabia but with the duo of Takumi Minamino and Yuya Osako scoring 10 goals each over the two rounds, it was easy sailing for Hajime Moriyasu’s side. In Qatar, they will be placed in the so-called ‘Group of Death’ along with the two European heavyweights – Germany and Spain – along with Costa Rica.

Iran

Under the management of Dragan Skocic, Iran has the most impressive team in the AFC qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022. With most goals scored and the most points for any nation, Iran cruised past their opponents with their only loss coming against South Korea. Bayer Leverkusen striker Sardar Azmoun finished the campaign with 10 goals while his strike partner Mehdi Taremi provided able support. This will be Iran’s sixth appearance in the World Cup and with England, Wales and the United States in their group, it will be a tough job for them to reach the playoffs.

South Korea

Son Heung-min and Co had a relatively easy journey to the FIFA World Cup 2022 with five wins out of the six games in the first round and just loss in the second round. The Tottenham superstar led his team by example as he was the top-scorer with six goals but it will be tough for them to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 from a group featuring Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana.

Saudi Arabia

Another team which cruised through the qualifying process with just one loss in two rounds. Salem Al-Dawsari and Saleh Al-Shehri top-scored with seven goals and with Argentina, Mexico and Poland in their FIFA World Cup 2022 group, there is an outside chance for the Asian giants to reach the next stage. This will be the sixth appearance for the top Asian side in the FIFA World Cup.

Qatar

This will be the debut appearance for Qatar in the FIFA World Cup as they will be hosting the footballing extravaganza. Qatar took part in the qualification Round 1 in order to secure their place in the Asian Cup 2023 and ended up toping their group with seven victories and one draw. Over the last couple of years, they have taken part in invitational competitions, but it will be a tough road for them in the World Cup as they are placed in Group A along with Ecuador, Senegal and Netherlands.

FIFA World Cup 2022: A look at the Asian contingent as record six teams qualify

In a dramatic shootout, Australia beat Peru to clinch their place in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which is set to be held later this year. Playing Peru at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Doha, on June 13, Australia held their nerves in what was a thrilling contest and grabbed their berth for the showpiece event with a 5-4 win in the penalty shootout after the regular time resulted in a 0-0 scoreline.

Thus, both sides were to be tested in the shootouts. While the penalties always put pressure on players but this time around, the crucial slot at Qatar for the finals was also to be determined by virtue of it. Australia's substitute goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the star as he was roped in just minutes before the end of play and finished with two stunning saves to guide his side to the World Cup for the fifth successive time.
