A US court has authorised Federal Bureau of Investigation to directly investigate backdoors into hundreds of Microsoft Exchange email servers across the US. Four months ago, hackers had used vulnerabilities in the server to attack multiple networks.

As part of this move, the FBI will be allowed to copy and remove backdoors, as announced by the Justice Department on Tuesday, TechCrunch first reported.

Microsoft had discovered a new hacking group from China in March called “Hafnium” which targeted Exchange servers on company networks. Clubbed together, the four vulnerabilities allowed hackers to get access to a vulnerable Exchange server and successfully steal its contents.

Even though Microsoft claimed that the vulnerabilities were patched, but the patches from backdoors did not close. After the loopholes became public, multiple hacking groups began capitalising on servers and installing ransomware.

According to a Justice Department statement, hundreds of Microsoft Exchange servers continue to remain vulnerable as backdoors remain difficult to identify and to get rid of.

The FBI is attempting to inform owners of servers via email after removal of backdoors. According to the Justice Department, the operation only removed the backdoors, but failed to fix the loopholes in place. In addition, the malware installed by hackers has not been removed. 'Putin's chef' urges FBI to remove his name from wanted list of criminals

FBI Director Christopher Wray condemned the attack on the US Capitol as "domestic terrorism," and defended the bureau's handling of intelligence of violence on January 6.

FBI Director Wray says Capitol attack was domestic terrorism

FBI Director Chris Wray on Tuesday accused supporters of Donald Trump who carried out a deadly attack on the US Capitol of domestic terrorism and vowed to hold them accountable.

"I was appalled that you, our country's elected leaders, were victimized right here in these very halls," Wray testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

''That siege was criminal behaviour, pure and simple. It's behaviour that we, the FBI, view as domestic terrorism."

It was Wray's first testimony in Congress since the attack, a failed bid to block Congress from certifying Joe Biden's November election victory, was carried out by supporters of then-President Trump who, in a speech near the White House, exhorted them to march to the Capitol in protest.

The Justice Department has charged more than 300 people on criminal counts ranging from conspiracy to attacking police and obstructing Congress. The rioting led to five deaths.

At least 18 people associated with the far-right Proud Boys have been charged and nine people tied to the anti-government militia known as the Oath Keepers are facing charges they conspired as far back as November to storm the Capitol to prevent Biden from becoming president.

The FBI has not yet arrested any suspects in the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, or for pipe bombs that were discovered outside the headquarters of both the Republican and Democratic national committees.

The FBI has obtained a video that shows a suspect spraying bear spray on police officers, including Sicknick, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.

The suspect has not yet been identified by name, and it is still not clear if the bear spray contributed to Sicknick's death.

In a newly unsealed search warrant, investigators say rioters carried weapons inside the Capitol including tire irons, sledgehammers, tasers, bear spray and, in at least one case, a handgun with an extended magazine.

"Everyone involved must take responsibility for their actions that day, including our former president," the panel's Ranking Republican Charles Grassley said.

"Now, in the wake of January 6, we must seriously examine the threats of domestic extremism."

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin said the government has not done enough to protect against threats from far-right extremists and white supremacists, and accused the Trump administration for playing down those threats.

He added that the Trump administration "never set up a task force to combat the numerous incidents" from the far-right, and instead focused on Black Lives Matter activists.

FBI Director to testify before Congress over Capitol assault

After the Capitol riots, several images were shared on the internet, which included memes too. There were also investigations that were initiated, and shockingly those also included memes.

America's top security and law enforcement agency, the FBI, filed an affidavit this week against the Massachusetts man Brian McCreary who has been accused of inciting violence and disruption in the US Capitol at the beginning of January 2021.

While the charges and the affidavit were expected, what came as a surprise — or rather a shock — was that the picture they included in this affidavit was one of the viral pictures available on the internet, which has been circulating as a meme.

In the document submitted by the FBI, there is a picture hanging on the wall behind the 33-year-old McCreary. That wall hanging has an image of a naked man photoshopped into the picture frame.

FBI, however, forgot to mention that the image was used as a meme, or probably failed to notice it. The investigators have presented that image on the fourth page of the document as evidence of that man's violent behaviour in the Capitol that day.

The fully nude man in the photo had gained popularity on the internet through memes and has often been dubbed as 'Wood Sitting On a Bed'. Several local reports have claimed that the man in the frame is Wardy Joubert III who passed away of a heart attack in 2016.

A 34-year-old Texas man has been arrested for allegedly taking part in the storming of the US Capitol this month and posting violent threats, including a call to assassinate Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

Garret Miller, who is from the Dallas suburb of Richardson, was arrested on Friday after being named in a five-count federal complaint, including for making death threats and trespassing offences.

Prosecutors asked a judge on Friday to keep Miller, in jail ahead of a court appearance, according to court records.

Images of social media posts allegedly authored by Miller, which appear to announce his trip to the Capitol and threaten the life of Ocasio-Cortez as well as a Capitol Police officer, are cited in the court filing.

Prosecutors said Miller made numerous threatening remarks online, including one instance in which he commented: "next time we bring the guns" on a Twitter video showing rioters exiting a Capitol building.

As rioters broke into the Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez worried that her colleagues in Congress might divulge her location to the mob, putting her at risk for kidnapping or worse, according to an Instagram Live video she recorded on January 12.

Ocasio-Cortez also said she experienced "a very close encounter where I thought I was going to die" on January 6, adding that she could not get into specifics for security reasons, according to a Washington Post account of the video. "I did not know if I was going to make it to the end of that day alive."

Ocasio-Cortez on Friday posted Miller's charging documents on Twitter and then tweeted: ''On one hand you have to laugh, and on the other know that the reason they were this brazen is because they thought they were going to succeed."

2 days before Joe Biden's inauguration, all 50 states of the US are on alert for armed protests. 25,000 troops have been deployed to guard Washington DC. It's the biggest security presence for any inauguration in US History. WION's Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Ahead of Biden's inauguration, Washington turned into a garrison city

Are U.S. troops becoming a threat to American democracy? Defence officials fear that U.S. service members could stage an attack during the Biden's inauguration. They are now vetting 25,000 National Guard Officers. WION's Palki Sharma has the details.

Gravitas: FBI to vet 25,000 National Guard Officers

When the supporters of the infamous US President Donald Trump took to the US Capitol, they damaged federal property and the idea of democracy. While the riots in itself were concerning, what raised bigger concerns was the theft of Nancy Pelosi's laptop.

Now, a young woman has been identified as taking part in the theft of the US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's official laptop.

The FBI believes this woman had hoped to sell the laptop to a Russian spy agency and make monetary gains.

A complaint was filed on Sunday in the US District Court in Washington that requested an immediate arrest of Riley June Williams on charges of "violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds."

Authorities have been searching a two-story suburban house in the Nashville area as they probe the huge blast that ripped through the downtown of the southern US city on Christmas morning. Police and federal agents were scouring the charred site of a Christmas Day explosion in Nashville on Saturday.

Investigators have also been evaluating the possibility that the blast was likely the result of a suicide bombing, according to a report in CNN.

They said they were sifting through more than 500 leads and tips and that sweeps of the area found no further explosive devices.

Following up on these 500 leads, local police and agents from the FBI and US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were searching a two-story, red-brick house on Bakertown Road in Antioch, Tennessee, 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Nashville, paying particular attention to its basement.

The bomb blast injured at least three people and damaged some 40 buildings. No deaths have been confirmed but authorities were examining tissue found at the blast site that they believe could be human remains.

Police say the blast was an "intentional act" but the motive remained unclear and FBI behavioral analysts were involved in the investigation.

US media reports said a 63-year-old "person of interest" was identified in connection with the explosion, which came from a parked motorhome that blared a warning minutes before it blew up.

No one has been arrested, but "information developed during the course of the investigation led us to this address", an FBI spokesman said in an interview with the Nashville Tennessean newspaper outside the home being searched.

At a separate press conference, authorities on Saturday declined to name a person of interest in connection with the explosion, but CBS News reported that the investigation has honed in on 63-year-old Anthony Quinn Warner, who recently lived at the Bakertown address.

According to a document posted online, on November 25 he signed over the property to a woman in Los Angeles at no cost to her. The document was signed by Warner, but not by the woman.

Other media reports said neighbours had previously spotted a motorhome outside the residence that was being searched Saturday by authorities, and that it appeared to be similar to the one that exploded in Nashville.

The investigation included some 250 FBI agents, analysts and other staff.

The governor toured the site on Saturday and said he had asked President Donald Trump to declare a state of emergency, a technical move that triggers federal assistance in repairing damage.

According to a timeline provided by the authorities, police were called to the area to respond to gunfire at 5:30 am, and officers spotted the motorhome at 6:00 am.

Fifteen minutes later, they heard an audio countdown coming from the vehicle warning of a bomb -- interspersed with music -- and the need to evacuate.

Police have not said if anyone was inside the motorhome at the time, but lauded the officers who arrived at the scene and took quick action.

A total of 41 businesses were damaged, Mayor John Cooper said.

Adding to the cryptic nature of Friday's incident was the eerie preamble described by witnesses - a crackle of gunfire followed an apparently computer-generated female voice from the RV reciting a minute-by-minute countdown to an impending bomb blast.

Police scrambled to evacuate nearby homes and buildings and called for a bomb squad, which was still en route to the scene when the RV blew up just outside an AT&T Inc office building where it had been parked.

The explosion occurred about two blocks from Lower Broadway, where some of Nashville's famous live music venues are located. The Ryman Auditorium, former home of the Grand Ole Opry and just three blocks from the blast scene, was undamaged. The Gaylord Opryland and current Grand Ole Opry complexes, which sit outside the downtown area, were not impacted.

The motorhome was parked in front of a building for phone company AT&T, causing damage that disrupted telecommunications service in Tennessee as well as parts of Mississippi, Kentucky, Alabama and Georgia.

AT&T's efforts to restore services overnight were waylaid when a fire reignited at the company's downtown office at the site of the blast, but the company said in a statement on Saturday it was deploying portable cell sites to downtown Nashville and across the region.

When authorities went to arrest Matthew Piercey on Monday for what they said was his role in running a $35 million Ponzi scheme, he took off in his truck and led them to Shasta Lake, the largest man-made reservoir in California.

Tracked by air and trailed by FBI agents and members of the California Highway Patrol, Piercey, 44, of Palo Cedro, California, was seen removing something from his truck and entering the frigid water with it in his street clothes, authorities said. After about 25 minutes in the lake, part of which he spent submerged, a very cold and wet Piercey emerged and was arrested, the Justice Department said.

The agents allowed him to change into dry clothes that they had obtained from his wife before escorting him to the nearest FBI field office, in Sacramento, the department said.

Piercey’s red Yamaha 350Li, an underwater sea scooter, was taken as evidence, authorities said. The commercially available, battery-powered scooter has an enclosed propeller that can pull a diver underwater at just under 4 mph, much faster than humans can move with fins.

It was not clear how long Piercey was underwater. Neither the FBI nor the Justice Department answered questions about whether he used a snorkel or any kind of scuba gear to stay submerged.

The Justice Department noted in a detention memorandum, however, that Piercey “spent some time out of sight underwater where law enforcement could only see bubbles.”

Piercey was accused in a federal indictment of running a Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of approximately $35 million between 2016 and earlier this year through two companies he helped run, Family Wealth Legacy and Zolla Financial.

Family Wealth Legacy solicited investments in securities, cryptocurrency mining and life insurance, the indictment says. Zolla Financial raised funds through transactions that “were typically styled as loans offering a fixed return, with the company’s returns purportedly generated through algorithmic trading,” according to the Justice Department.

“Piercey often paid off his lines of credit, credit cards, and personal and business expenses with investor funds, and his companies did not generate revenue sufficient to cover overhead and expenses while still paying investors the returns they were promised or otherwise led to expect,” the Justice Department said in the detention memorandum.

The Justice Department said Piercey had a pattern of paying old investors with money he raised from new investors “while making various false and misleading statements, half-truths, and omissions” to hide his “constant downward financial spiral.”

Piercey faces 31 felony counts, including wire fraud, mail fraud, witness tampering and money laundering. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

A colleague of Piercey’s, Kenneth Winton, 67, of Oroville, California, was charged separately Monday with a single count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Messages left with David Fischer, a lawyer representing Piercey, were not immediately returned. Adam Gasner, a lawyer for Winton, said in a statement that his client “was made aware of these allegations and will immediately and voluntarily appear in court.”

“Mr. Winton is a family man with no prior criminal record and wishes to address the conduct alleged to have been committed by him and not be prejudiced by the actions of others charged in this case,” Gasner said.

Josh Kons, a lawyer who represents investors in securities fraud matters, said he was stunned by Piercey’s attempt to elude law enforcement.

“You never really know what people are thinking about when they get indicted or when the FBI tries to bang down their door, but certainly this one goes down in the books,” said Kons, who has consulted with people who say they lost money to Piercey. “I don’t know if we’ll ever see a more novel escape attempt by a Ponzi scheme artist again.”

The audacity of Piercy’s run from the law, Kons said, should not obscure the human costs of this kind of fraud.

“Ponzi schemes really hurt people,” he said. “It’s fairly rare that victims get more than pennies on the dollar at all, and it certainly seems that these people may suffer a complete loss.”

FBI Releases Its Annual Report On Hate Crime In US

Senate Republicans rehashed unproven allegations of corruption and bias at the FBI on Tuesday, attacking the bureau’s former acting director Andrew McCabe during a contentious Judiciary Committee hearing.

The hearing, led by Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a close ally of President Donald Trump’s, was a recounting of perceived injustices that the president and his supporters have amplified over the investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. They included the botched applications to wiretap former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, the treatment of former national security adviser Michael Flynn and a notorious dossier about purported Trump-Russia links.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas accused the FBI of going “rogue,” while Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee said the bureau had a “culture of corruption and cover-up.” Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri described the investigation as the “biggest scandal in the history of the FBI.”

McCabe repeatedly rejected Republican claims that the FBI’s actions were politically motivated.

“Let me be very clear: We didn’t open a case because we liked one candidate or didn’t like the other one,” he said in his opening statement. “We didn’t open a case because we intended to stage a coup or overthrow the government.”

McCabe, who testified remotely because of the pandemic, acknowledged serious FBI mistakes in the Page wiretap applications, one of which he signed. He said he would not have approved it knowing what he has learned since. “We’re all responsible for the work that went into that FISA,” McCabe said.

A Justice Department inspector general report issued in December found egregious errors and omissions in the applications to wiretap Page in the months after he left the Trump campaign, based on investigators’ suspicions about his ties to Russia.

Republicans pressed McCabe about who at the FBI was to blame for the problems. They wrongly insisted that no one had been held responsible; the inspector general’s report did assign blame, singling out an FBI agent assigned as “primarily responsible for some of the most significant errors and omissions.”

The FBI director, Christopher Wray, has said line-level employees who played a role in the Page wiretap applications were referred to the bureau’s office of professional responsibility, its disciplinary arm.

The inspector general report also found that the FBI had sufficient reason to open the Russia investigation and that investigators acted without political bias in doing so.

Democrats on the committee made clear they had little patience for Graham’s inquiry, believing it was a waste of time as they accused Attorney General William Barr of politicizing the Justice Department.

“This is a last-ditch, desperate undertaking to deal with President Trump’s grievances about that election,” said Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., accusing the Republican-led committee of holding another “partisan hearing to advance President Trump’s theories.”

Before the hearing started, Trump took aim at McCabe, a frequent target. “Republicans, don’t let Andrew McCabe continue to get away with totally criminal activity,” the president wrote on Twitter. “What he did should never be allowed to happen to our Country again. FIGHT FOR JUSTICE!”

During the hearing, Graham repeatedly accused the FBI of treating Trump unfairly, saying he should have been warned about Russian attempts to interfere in the 2016 election on his behalf.

Graham pointed to a recently declassified document of unverified information that suggested that Russian intelligence had acquired information that Hillary Clinton had approved a plan for her 2016 campaign to “stir up a scandal” against Trump by tying him to the Russian hackers who had broken into Democratic servers.

Though Trump’s allies have promoted the document, other officials rejected its information after evaluating it, including the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee.

McCabe said he had never seen the document before and it was not clear to him that the information alluded to criminal conduct.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., a former federal prosecutor, defended the FBI for not investigating the claim, noting that even information related to a possible Clinton campaign strategy did not amount to a crime but rather to typical politics.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, also brought up reports that advisers to President-elect Joe Biden were talking to foreign leaders and compared that to the FBI's scrutiny of Flynn in connection with his December 2016 calls with the Russian ambassador during Trump’s transition.

Cruz demanded to know whether Biden and his team were violating the Logan Act, a 1799 statute that says it is a crime for a private citizen to interfere with diplomatic relations between the United States and foreign governments. Cruz eventually pointed out that the Logan Act is widely considered to be unconstitutional, saying that Biden was therefore not violating it but that it was illegitimate to “go after” Flynn for the same thing.

In a heated exchange with Cruz, who repeatedly cut him off, McCabe said that “there were no discussions of the Logan Act” regarding Flynn, leading Cruz to suggest that he might be committing perjury. But permitted to complete his answer, McCabe clarified that agents opened the counterintelligence investigation into Flynn based on something else — a suspicion that he might be a conduit between the campaign and Russia.

Notes released in connection with the Justice Department’s attempt to drop the prosecution of Flynn, despite his guilty plea for lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador, have shown that there were discussions of the Logan Act in 2017.

In addition, on Tuesday a federal judge unsealed a set of search warrants in connection with the Flynn case in response to a news media request. They showed that by September 2017, when the bureau and Mueller’s office sought access to devices and email accounts from the Trump transition, it cited the Logan Act and false statements to a judge.

“The FBI is investigating whether Flynn corresponded with foreign government officials without the authority of the United States, with intent to influence the conduct of foreign governments, in violation of” the Logan Act, “and whether Flynn made materially false statements and omitted material facts to the FBI regarding his communications with those foreign government officials,” it said.

At the end of the hearing, Graham brushed off the complaints by Democrats that his investigation was pointless. “We are going to keep digging,” he said.

Less than a week before the US election, the threats of hacking the voter bank and details are getting more serious, and the US official bodies FBI and Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have now released a report on the earlier reported hack.

However, with an increase in mail-in voting, the threat of data breach has increased.

A few weeks back, the US official bodies, FBI and CISA, had revealed that some international organisations (private) were trying to hack into voters'data. On Friday, the two security organisations have confirmed that those hacks were initiated by Iranian hackers. The hacking campaign being talked about included several emails sent to US voters — selected on a random basis — portraying to be a far-right group of being a Trump supporter. It also featured a video message where the hackers urged the viewers to create chaos by breaking into voter registration records.

CISA and the FBI confirmed Friday that "the actor successfully obtained voter registration data in at least one state." However, the states have not been specified yet, but the video was flashed in Alaska, locals claimed. As of now, the local media has reported that 10 states have been scanned — the reports have not been confirmed yet, though. It is also not clear whether or not the hackers were able to actually break into the systems.

The security organisations also claimed that the Iranian hackers had also scanned several other states' election sites to assess their vulnerability.

The statement has come after the US-based news agency Reuters reported that Russian hackers are trying to target California and Indiana branches of the Democratic Party this year. The report has not been confirmed by the security officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has warned of an impending wave of cyberattacks on hospitals and healthcare providers in the United States, urging them to increase their protection.

An advisory released by the FBI and two other government agencies said they had "credible information" that hackers were targeting the healthcare sector using malware, "often leading to ransomware attacks, data theft, and the disruption of healthcare services."

FBI warns of 'imminent' cyber crime threat to hospitals in US

The FBI said on Thursday it thwarted a plot to overthrow the Michigan state government and kidnap its governor, Gretchen Whitmer, and had probable cause to charge six men with a failed operation that involved reaching out to a militia group.

The operation will be announced at a press conference of law enforcement officials at 1 pm in Grand Rapids, which will be attended by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the state`s leading federal prosecutors.

The FBI first got wind that a group of individuals "were discussing the violent overthrow of certain government and law-enforcement components" in early 2020, according to an affidavit by special agent Richard Trask released by the FBI on Thursday.

The alleged plot included reaching out to a militia group, which was not named in the affidavit.

Trask said there was probable cause to charge six men - Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta - with conspiring to kidnap Whitmer, a Democrat and frequent critic of Republican President Donald Trump.

In September, Fox posted in an encrypted chat that he did not want a final training exercise to be held in the last week of October because it would not leave enough time to execute the kidnapping before the national election on Nov. 3, Trask said.

"The group agreed to use the time until the final training exercise to raise money for explosives and other supplies," Trask wrote in the affidavit.

Former FBI Director James Comey, one of the principal figures behind the US investigation into links between Russia and President Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign, will testify on Wednesday before a Senate committee examining the origins of the probe.

Comey, who Trump dismissed in May 2017, will appear before the Republican-led Senate Judiciary Committee at 10 a.m. (14:00 GMT) to discuss an FBI probe of Trump campaign officials, code-named “Crossfire Hurricane.”

Senate Republicans say the probe, which was later handed off to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, was intended to undermine Republican Trump's candidacy and presidency.

In December, a Justice Department watchdog found evidence of numerous errors but no political bias when the FBI opened the investigation.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, has said he wants accountability for the errors, including ones in the FBI’s applications for warrants to monitor Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser.

The panel’s top Democrat, Senator Dianne Feinstein, has sharply criticized the committee investigation as an effort to attack Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate challenging Trump in the Nov. 3 election.

The committee held public hearings earlier this year with two other former officials involved in Crossfire Hurricane: former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates.

Ex-FBI Director Comey to testify to US Senate on Russia probe

After saying the top health expert of the country was confused about vaccines, now the US President Donald Trump is dissatisfied by his FBI Director Christopher Wray's statements on Russia.

Trump, on Friday, said he did not like Wray's answers after Wray openly talked about Russia's involvement in elections, and how the country still poses a threat for the US.

Accused of being funded by Moscow, Trump did not like the comments made by the Director and said, "I did not like his answers yesterday. I'm not sure he liked them either. I'm sure that he probably would agree with me."

When he was quizzed by the local reporters about the possibility of Wray getting fired — a practice Trump is infamous for since his reality show days — Trump said, "We're looking at a lot of different things."

Trump was unhappy with Wray's claims about the threats posed by the white supremacist groups. The President, who has often been accused of being a racist, felt Wray should have highlighted the dangers posed by China, rather than the domestic groups or Russia. "Within the racially motivated violent extremist bucket, people subscribing to some kind of white supremacist ideology is certainly the biggest chunk," Wray said in his testimony to Congress.

However, Trump wanted the Chief to talk about China. "Obviously China is at the top of the list. I see Russia, North Korea, many other countries, can be talked about. But China would be at the top of that list, so I don't know why that's not mentioned," Trump told reporters.

Trumo has earlier been accused of having Russia interfere in the 2016 elections to manipulate his chances of winning the elections. His sudden dislike towards Wray has only strengthened the critics' views, especially weeks away from the upcoming US elections.

Talking about the anti-fascist group Antifa, Trump raised doubts about Wray's intentions for not mentioning the left-wing movement in the names that posed danger to the society. "Antifa's a bad group and they're criminals and they're anarchists and they're agitators and they're looters and rioters and everything else," he told reporters.

"They're bad. And when a man doesn't say that, that bothers me. I wonder why he's not saying that," he said of Wray.
