Pakistan's rice export consignments have been rejected by European countries due to quality issues. And now, on March 1, it was discussed by the country's National Assembly panel in the capital, Islamabad. In 2024, the European Union had blocked 104 consignments of &lsquo;substandard&rsquo; rice from Pakistan. This move made the country incur financial losses, subsequently affecting the national exchequer.

The rice was rejected for the presence of pesticides beyond the permissible limit; this was discussed in the meeting. Emphasis was laid on crucial and mandatory steps to be taken for quality control, and no detail or process shall be neglected in this regard.
Pakistan-based news outlet Dawn reported that chairman Mohammad Jawed Hanif Khan instructed that strict action be taken against groups and individuals responsible for interrupting with procedures and urged for accountability. Another point of discussion was the monopolistic practices taking place in the fumigation sector that were inversely affecting the export of rice. Khan asked for immediate action to be taken to fix and dismantle the monopolistic system.

<h2>Boost in rice export</h2>
From July to December 2024, Pakistan was celebrating a boost in food exports when the country's rice export increased by 14.50% year-on-year, bringing the value to $1.87 billion, as reported by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
A 416,491 tonnes year-on-year increase in basmati rice production was witnessed, which is about a 30.62% hike, and its value surged by 18.06% to $433.82 million. While non-basmati rice exports jumped by approximately 13.5%, the quantity increased by nearly 17%.
But the growth in exports did burn a hole in the pockets of Pakistanis; a kilogramme of basmati, which was priced at $0.54 USD (PKR 150), surged to $1.43 USD (PKR 400).

Despite aggressive sanctions to counter Russia's war chest, the European Union continues to import Russian fossil fuels in significant volumes. According to the latest report by the Centre for Research on Energy &amp; Clean Air (CREA), the EU spent $23 billion on Russian fuels in 2024. This is a 6 per cent value drop year-on-year but only a 1 per cent reduction in volume. Notably, the EU's fossil fuels from Russia exceeded the $19.5 billion in financial aid it provided to Ukraine in 2024. &nbsp;
<h2>Oil revenues fuel Russia's war chest</h2>
According to CREA, Russia's total fossil fuel revenues in the third year of the invasion reached $253 billion. The total earnings since 2022 have surpassed $885 billion. Despite Western sanctions targeting Russia's oil fleet, the revenues have only dropped by 8 per cent compared to pre-invasion levels.
Meanwhile, Europe has scrambled to reduce its dependency on Russian energy. While gas imports have fallen from 45 per cent in 2021 to 18 per cent in 2024, the EU still accounts for almost one-quarter of Russia's fossil fuel revenues. EU recently came up with the latest sanctions on Russia against the backdrop of Trump-Putin 'peace talks.' While the US is considering a softer stance on Russia, the EU continues to maintain a sanctions grip on Russia's war revenues.
<h2>Russia's 'sanctions evasion' tactics</h2>
Russia has adapted to sanctions by re-routing oil exports using a growing 'shadow' fleet. A total of 558 Russian shadow vessels worked overtime in 2024 to deliver oil worth $87 billion. China, India, and Turkiye bought the bulk of Russia's oil, with China leading with $81.6 billion. Indirect flow of Russian oil to G7 countries via India and Turkiye also surged, with imports worth $18.8 billion.
The report highlights 'ship-to-ship' transfers conducted on EU waters. Russia trans-shipped 5.2 million tonnes in 2024, with 43 per cent involving shadow tankers. The highest STS activity was recorded in Greece, Romania, Italy, and Malta. Over 87 'hub tankers' have been identified since 2022, with 68 still active.
The report also raises environmental concerns around shadow tankers, with damages reaching over $1 billion dollars.&nbsp;

EU imposes 16th round of sanctions on Russia

The European Union countries on Wednesday agreed to a new round of sanctions on Russia, diplomats said, as the bloc looks to keep up pressure in the face of US talks with Russia.
The wide-ranging package, which includes a ban on imports of Russian aluminum, will be formally adopted by EU foreign ministers on Monday, the third anniversary of the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine.
The EU's 16th round of sanctions on Russia comes as US President Donald Trump has undercut Kyiv and its European backers by launching efforts with Russia's Vladimir Putin to end the war.
"The EU is clamping down even harder on circumvention by targeting more vessels in Putin's shadow fleet and imposing new import and export bans," European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X.

"We are committed to keep up the pressure on the Kremlin."
Beyond targeting Russia's lucrative aluminum sector, the new measures target the so-called "shadow fleet" used to skirt restrictions on Russian oil exports by blacklisting 73 more ageing vessels.
The EU will also disconnect a further 13 Russian banks from the global SWIFT payment system and ban eight further Russian media outlets from broadcasting in Europe.

EU steps up sanctions on Russia to keep up ‘pressure’ as US prepares for talks

European leaders gathered in Paris on Monday (Feb 17) for urgent discussions on their role in a possible ceasefire in Ukraine.
The meeting, called by French President Emmanuel Macron, followed the United States&rsquo; unexpected move last week to exclude Kyiv and its European allies from peace negotiations.
<h2>Scholz: 'No diktat can be imposed on Ukraine'</h2>
After the meeting, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz briefed the media, and stressed that any peace deal must not be forced upon Ukraine.
"We welcome that there are talks about a peace agreement, but for us, it is clear this cannot be a diktat," Scholz said.

He stressed that Europe must continue to support Ukraine and reassure Kyiv of its unwavering backing.
Scholz also underlined that Ukraine must be allowed to defend itself, continue its path toward joining the European Union, and maintain a strong military, saying that these matters are non-negotiable.
<h2>Scholz dismisses speculation about European troops in Ukraine</h2>
When asked about the possibility of deploying European troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping force, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/car-drives-into-crowd-in-munich-several-injured-german-police-8717536">Scholz</a> reiterated that such discussions were premature. He also insisted that Europe and the United States must remain aligned on security matters, stressing the importance of NATO.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S&aacute;nchez said, "Europe wants peace, but one that preserves the principles on which the international order is based." He added that&nbsp;a fair peace for Ukraine is inseparable from European security.
Meanwhile, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson&nbsp;assured strong support for Ukraine.
In a social media post, Kristersson wrote, "No discussions should be held about Ukraine without Ukraine, and support for Ukraine needs to be increased and accelerated."

Meanwhile, US envoy Keith Kellogg said on Monday that he would not tell Ukraine to accept whatever deal is negotiated by President Donald Trump to end Russia's war, ahead of a visit to Kyiv.
"The decision by Ukrainians is a Ukrainian decision," Kellogg told journalists after talks with US allies at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
"Zelensky is the elected leader of a sovereign nation and those decisions are his and nobody will impose those on an elected leader of a sovereign nation," Kellogg said.

‘No diktat on Ukraine’: Europe pushes back with ‘emergency meet’ as US sidelines Kyiv from talks to end war

As US President Donald Trump seeks an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, Europe seems unprepared to take on its substantial share of the responsibility to protect Ukraine and expand its defence. Trump is starting to tell the leaders of the European Union how to end the conflict in Ukraine. However, his demands are going to test the limits of the EU.

Trump's Ukraine plans mean a $3 tn bill for Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron will convene a summit of European leaders in Paris on Monday (Feb 17) to discuss the continent&rsquo;s security, Foreign Minister Jean-No&euml;l Barrot confirmed.&nbsp;
The meeting comes as concerns grow over the United States' handling of the Ukraine war, particularly after President Donald Trump&rsquo;s direct engagement with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Trump&rsquo;s phone call with Putin earlier this week caught Ukraine and its European allies off guard, raising fears that the US may negotiate a settlement without European involvement.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also set to be present.

‘We need to respond’: Macron calls 'emergency summit' as Trump snubs Europe, Kyiv in Russia-Ukraine talks

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania successfully synchronised their electricity grids with the European continental power network on Sunday (Feb 9), marking the end of their longstanding energy reliance on Russia and Belarus. The transition came a day after the Baltic nations disconnected from the old Soviet-era system.

In eastern Latvia, near the Russian border, high-voltage transmission lines were cut, with segments of wire distributed as souvenirs to spectators. The grid then operated independently for a full day before linking up with the European network via Poland on Sunday.
<h2>$1.6 billion initiative</h2>
This shift was the result of a five-year initiative backed by $1.6 billion (&pound;1.4 billion) in European Union funding, aimed at updating the Baltic region&rsquo;s energy infrastructure.
For Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, all of which are NATO members bordering Russia, energy security has been closely tied to national security. The three nations have been vocal supporters of Ukraine in its defence against Russia&rsquo;s full-scale invasion.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the move a significant milestone. &ldquo;Today we connect the Baltic states to the continental European electricity grid. We're cutting the last remaining links with Russia. Freedom from threats and blackmail, at last. This is a historic day,&rdquo; she stated on X.
The Baltic states have long accused Russia of using energy supplies as a geopolitical tool to reward allies and penalise adversaries. While they ceased importing oil, natural gas, and electricity from Russia in 2022, Moscow still retained control over grid frequency management, giving it a degree of influence over the region&rsquo;s power stability.

<h2>Baltic Sea diplomacy</h2>
Concerns over the security of the Baltic Sea region have heightened in recent months, with multiple undersea power cables sustaining damage under suspicious circumstances.
Several key infrastructure links including electricity, telecommunications, and gas pipelines between the Baltics and Sweden or Finland have been disrupted, reportedly by ships dragging anchors along the seabed following <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-ukraine-war-zelensky-open-to-face-to-face-talks-with-enemy-putin-but-only-under-one-condition-8691634">Russia&rsquo;s invasion of Ukraine</a>.
Russia has denied any involvement in these incidents. In response, Poland and the Baltic states have increased surveillance of the area, deploying naval forces, elite police units, and helicopters.

The grid then operated independently for a full day before linking up with the European network via Poland on Sunday. $1.6 billion initiative This shift was the result of a five-year initiative backed by $1.6 billion (£1.4 billion) in European Union funding, aimed at updating the Baltic region’s energy infrastructure. For Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, all of which are NATO members bordering Russia, energy security has been closely tied to national security. The three nations have been vocal supporters of Ukraine in its defence against Russia’s full-scale invasion. We're cutting the last remaining links with Russia. Freedom from threats and blackmail, at last. This is a historic day,” she stated on X. The Baltic states have long accused Russia of using energy supplies as a geopolitical tool to reward allies and penalise adversaries. While they ceased importing oil, natural gas, and electricity from Russia in 2022, Moscow still retained control over grid frequency management, giving it a degree of influence over the region’s power stability. Several key infrastructure links including electricity, telecommunications, and gas pipelines between the Baltics and Sweden or Finland have been disrupted, reportedly by ships dragging anchors along the seabed following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia has denied any involvement in these incidents. In response, Poland and the Baltic states have increased surveillance of the area, deploying naval forces, elite police units, and helicopters. Apple unhappy with new EU rules for its users

After imposing sweeping tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico, Donald Trump is all set to write another chapter of his tariff story, this time with the European Union as the target. The US President has once again threatened to extend trade tariffs, reiterating that the European Union, and possibly the UK, will be subjected to new tariffs.
<h2>Trump confirms tariffs on the EU</h2>
Speaking on Sunday night, Trump insisted that tariffs on the EU would "definitely happen," repeating his concern over the significant US trade deficit with the bloc and his push for Europe to increase imports of American cars and agricultural products. "It will definitely happen with the European Union, I can tell you that. I wouldn&rsquo;t say there&rsquo;s a timeline but it&rsquo;s going to be pretty soon," he told reporters.

Trump appeared more lenient towards the UK, citing a positive relationship with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, though he did not rule out potential tariffs.
"The UK is out of line but I&rsquo;m sure that one, I think that one can be worked out. Well, Prime Minister Starmer&rsquo;s been very nice, we&rsquo;ve had a couple of meetings, we&rsquo;ve had numerous phone calls, we&rsquo;re getting along very well. We&rsquo;ll see whether or not we can balance out our budget," he said.
<h2>EU vows strong response</h2>
Ahead of Trump&rsquo;s latest comments, a spokesperson for the European Commission stated on Sunday that the EU would "respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods."

The commission also reacted to Trump&rsquo;s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, stating: "Tariffs create unnecessary economic disruption and drive inflation. They are hurtful to all sides."
<h2>How China, Canada and Mexico responded to tariffs</h2>
The announcement comes as Trump&rsquo;s tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China, revealed on Saturday, prompted swift retaliation from all three nations. Both Mexico and Canada have pledged retaliation, while China and Canada are also pursuing legal action.
Trump acknowledged that his sweeping tariffs on these countries might cause "short-term" economic difficulties for Americans, as global markets reacted with concern over potential economic slowdown and rising inflation.
"We may have short-term some little pain, and people understand that. But long term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world," he said.

<h2>Canada&rsquo;s retaliatory measures</h2>
In response to Trump's tariffs, Canada&rsquo;s finance department released a list of US imports that will be subjected to a 25% retaliatory tariff from Tuesday. The initial round targets goods worth CAD 30 billion (approximately USD 20 billion), including tobacco, produce, household appliances, firearms, and military equipment.
Canada is also preparing a broader set of tariffs in 21 days, which will impact passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, various fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, and dairy products.
<h2>Mexico&rsquo;s response</h2>
Mexico&rsquo;s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that her government would provide further details on its own retaliatory measures on Monday. In a statement on Sunday, Sheinbaum emphasised her preference for negotiation over confrontation.
"Problems are not addressed by imposing tariffs, but with talks and dialogue," she said. "Sovereignty is not negotiable: coordination yes, subordination no."

Sheinbaum and Canada&rsquo;s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, discussed the issue by phone on Saturday following the US decision to impose tariffs&mdash;25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, with a reduced rate of 10% for Canadian oil, and 10% on imports from China.
<h2>Canada and Mexico strengthen ties</h2>
Trudeau&rsquo;s office later confirmed that Canada and Mexico had agreed "to enhance the strong bilateral relations" between their nations.
"Now is the time to choose products made right here in Canada," Trudeau wrote on X on Sunday. "Check the labels. Let&rsquo;s do our part. Wherever we can, choose Canada."
Despite Trump&rsquo;s warning of potential escalations if retaliatory tariffs were introduced, both Canada and Mexico proceeded with their retaliatory tariffs.
China also announced it would challenge the tariffs through legal means. The US-imposed tariffs "seriously violate" World Trade Organisation rules, according to China&rsquo;s commerce ministry, which urged the US to "engage in frank dialogue and strengthen cooperation."
<h2>Public backlash grows</h2>
Beyond official government responses, people have already begun discussing how to adapt to Trump&rsquo;s decision, with social media users sharing suggestions for alternatives to US products.
Public sentiment was evident in Canada over the weekend, as hockey fans booed the US national anthem on Saturday during two National Hockey League games. The protests continued on Sunday at an NBA game in Toronto, where the Raptors faced the Los Angeles Clippers.

US: EU stands firm as Trump unleashes tariffs

The policy director of Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, the think tank of Europe's Largest Party, the European People's Party (EPP) has called for the need to have skilled Indians in the European Union. Speaking to Wion's Sidhant Sibal in Brussels, Dr Peter Hefele said, 'We have many Indians here in Europe already. I think this is our potential, which we have not exploited. And we need, of course, qualified Indian people here on the European ground'.
The EPP is the largest political party in the European Parliament, with members from various national centre-right parties across EU member states. Its think tank, Wilfried Martens Centre, named after the former EPP president, aims to advance centre-right thought, contributing to EU and national policy formulation.

Dr Hefele pointed out that "there are a lot of topics where India and European Union can work much better together" &amp; hoped that there "will be progress in the trade issue, which has unfortunately lasted already way too long." India and the EU have been negotiating FTA talks for years now, but not much headway has been made. Last week Indian trade minister Goyal visited Belgium &amp; it is hoped that it will provide much-needed impetus to talks.
The policy director also spoke about China &amp; impact of the Trump Presidency on Europe.
<h2>Full interview with Dr Peter Hefele</h2>
 Sidhant Sibal: How do you see Donald Trump's presidency impacting European politics? Dr Peter Hefele: Well, we had a lot of discussion before the final elections. But we know a lot of homework has to be done, regardless of who is ruling in Washington, maybe defence, our economic revitalisation, and relations with other nations so they are not impacted always by the United States. We have to go on with India, for example, regardless of what is happening in the United States. The same goes for Africa or Latin America.

&nbsp;
Sidhant Sibal: But Donald Trump has essentially said that he will impose tariffs. And of course, there is the question of Greenland as well. We know that he has been staking claim to Greenland, and there was a conversation between Trump &amp; Denmark's PM. So how do you see these challenges when it comes to the presidency of Donald Trump? Dr Peter Hefele: Well, we know how Trump is negotiating. He puts a lot of demands on the ground. The issue is, what can put Europe on the table? And I think a lot of things which Europe is still interested in. So we should avoid these huge conflicts. But well, we have to deliver something. Trade is an issue, opening European markets, and doing more for our defence. That's what the United States, at the very end, wants now.
 Sidhant Sibal: So coming to India, you mentioned about India, you are someone who is leading a think tank with a party which is one of the largest parties in the European Union. So essentially, how do you see a relationship between the European Union and India in terms of how it can be a factor of stability in an increasingly geopolitical world? Dr Peter Hefele: Well, there are a lot of topics where India and the European Union can work much better together. I hope that there will be progress in the trade issue, which unfortunately lasted already way too long. Security is an issue, not on a large scale, but in a lot of the industrial sectors, for example, and in certain regions to create stability, mainly in the Indo-Pacific region. Science cooperation is a big issue that is an under-exploited issue. We have many Indians here in Europe already. I think this is our potential, which we have not exploited. And we need, of course, qualified Indian people here on the European ground, also as a fight of very skilled migration. That is an issue, again, which should be dealt with and must be dealt with on the European level.
Sidhant Sibal: How much China is an issue in terms of the European Union's internal politics and an issue for Europe? Dr Peter Hefele: Well, China is everywhere. Whatever you discuss, somehow China is in it. It is in trade and security. It has a role in the conflict, for example, Russia and Ukraine. It's in the trans-Atlantic relations because these are impacted by the China-US relations. There's a lot of uncertainty. Europe has to find its own way, not following only the United States' interests, but it also has to make clear what our interests are. We have also to protect our markets against unfair competition.
Sidhant Sibal: My final question, you mentioned about immigration. You mentioned about skilled Indians as well. So essentially, how do you see that issue as well? Dr Peter Hefele: Well, we need immigration, that is definitely, but really skilled immigration. India is an interesting partner in this respect. It should not always be a one-sided immigration. I think what we call is sometimes circular migration. So this is another new way of migration, and we need to make progress on the ground. A lot of these challenges are not on the European level. It's on the very local level. It's administrative issues and financial issues. These are the things we have to focus on now.

Dr Hefele pointed out that "there are a lot of topics where India and European Union can work much better together" & hoped that there "will be progress in the trade issue, which has unfortunately lasted already way too long."

Think tank of Europe's largest political party, EPP, calls for more skilled Indian professionals in EU

The policy director of Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, the think tank of Europe's Largest Party, the European People's Party (EPP) has called for the need to have skilled Indians in European Union. Speaking to WION's Sidhant Sibal in Brussels, Dr Peter Hefele said, 'We have many Indians here in Europe already. I think this is our potential, which we have not exploited. And we need, of course, qualified Indian people here on the European ground'. Watch in.

India and the European Union are looking to strengthen ties in the defense and security fields this year. A series of proposals are being considered, focusing on a new strategic dialogue on foreign-related issues and the elevation of security and defense partnerships at the defense secretary level.

India & EU to bolster security, defence ties

US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> on Thursday (Jan 23) took aim at the European Union for what he describes as a highly imbalanced trade relationship. Speaking virtually at Davos summit, Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of trade between the US and the EU.
<h2>Trump criticises EU trade policies at Davos</h2>
&ldquo;From the standpoint of America, the EU treats us very, very unfairly, very badly,&rdquo; Trump said during his address at the World Economic Forum.

The 47th US president added, &ldquo;They make it very difficult to bring products into Europe, and yet they expect to be selling, and they do sell their products in the United States. So we have, you know, hundreds of billions of dollars of deficits with the EU, and nobody&rsquo;s happy with it. And we&rsquo;re going to do something about it.&rdquo;
&ldquo;They essentially don&rsquo;t take our farm products and they don&rsquo;t take our cars, yet they send cars to us by the millions. They put tariffs on things that we want to do ... We have some very big complaints with the EU,&rdquo; he added.
The EU had a trade surplus with the US in 2023, according to European Commission data.
Trump's comments came three days after he assumed office in his second term as president. Trade policies under Trump have been a central focus at Davos this year, especially his tariff threats targeting the EU, as well as other countries including China, Mexico, and Canada.
Earlier, on Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said at Davos that the bloc is ready to work with Trump, noting that "no other economies in the world are as integrated as" the US and EU.&nbsp;
She also said recently that EU nations could potentially replace Russian liquified natural gas with American gas imports, something President Trump has repeatedly urged.

In December, Trump had warned that unless the EU increased its purchases of American oil and gas, it would face &ldquo;tariffs all the way.&rdquo; On Thursday, he reiterated the same saying, &ldquo;They want to be able to compete better, and you can&rsquo;t compete when you can&rsquo;t go through the approval process faster. There&rsquo;s no reason why it can&rsquo;t go faster ... I&rsquo;m trying to be constructive, because I love <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/europe" rel="dofollow">Europe</a>.&rdquo;
<h2>&lsquo;Tariffs if products aren't made in US&rsquo;</h2>
Trump further told economic leaders that they will have to pay tariffs if their products aren't made in the US.
"If you don&rsquo;t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff&mdash;differing amounts, but a tariff," he said.
"Under Trump administration, there will be no better place on earth to create jobs, build factories, or grow a company than right here in the good old USA."
Trump has said earlier that he might impose tariffs of 25% on products from Canada and Mexico and 10% on goods from China.
<h2>US trade deficit and surplus with the EU</h2>
The United States is the largest market for EU exports, with machinery and vehicles accounting for the biggest trade deficit. In 2023, this gap amounted to &euro;102 billion ($106 billion). On the other hand, the US has a surplus in energy trade with the EU, valued at &euro;70 billion, along with a substantial surplus in services.
<h2>&lsquo;NATO members should raise defence spending to 5% of GDP&rsquo;</h2>
Trump further said that he is going to ask NATO members to increase their defence spending. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m also going to ask all NATO nations to increase defence spending to 5% of gross domestic product, which is what it should have been years ago,&rdquo; Trump said, repeating his old remarks. Defence ministers of several major US allies in Europe recently said that a contribution of 5% of GDP per country is unrealistic.

Trump slams ‘unfair’ EU trade policies, vows US will ‘do something about it’

France, Germany and the EU have issued a cautious warning to Donald Trump, urging the US president-elect to refrain from actions that threaten the &ldquo;sovereign borders&rdquo; of the European Union. This comes after Trump refused to rule out using military force to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark, a member state of the EU.
&ldquo;There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be... attack its sovereign borders,&rdquo; French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said during an interview with France Inter radio.

Barrot added, &ldquo;We are a strong continent. We need to strengthen ourselves more.&rdquo; When asked directly whether the United States might invade Greenland, he responded, &ldquo;If you ask me: 'Is the United States going to invade Greenland?' the answer is no.&rdquo;
<h2>'Should we be overcome with worry? Evidently, no'</h2>
He added, &ldquo;We have entered an era that is seeing the return of the law of the strongest. Should we be intimidated? Should we be overcome with worry? Evidently, no. We need to wake up and reinforce ourselves, militarily, in competition, in a world where the law of the strongest prevails.&rdquo;
Barrot also said that he believes that the US is &ldquo;inherently not imperialistic&rdquo; and he doubts that this fundamental nature is changing. However, French government spokeswoman Sophie Primas said, &ldquo;Today we are seeing the rise in blocs, we can see this as a form of imperialism, which materialises itself in the statements that we saw from Mr Trump on the annexation of an entire territory.&rdquo;

The European Commission also dismissed Trump&rsquo;s comments about Greenland as &ldquo;wild hypothetical stuff,&rdquo; but added that EU member states are obligated to defend Greenland if it came under attack. A commission spokesman said, &ldquo;We are talking about fairly wild hypothetical stuff about an administration that hasn&rsquo;t come in yet.&rdquo;
When asked if Greenland is protected under the EU&rsquo;s mutual defence clause, Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho confirmed it is, adding, &ldquo;But we are indeed speaking of something extremely theoretical on which we will not want to elaborate.&rdquo;
<h2>'Borders must not be moved by force'</h2>
In Germany, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said, &ldquo;As always, the firm principle applies... that borders must not be moved by force.&rdquo;&nbsp;
However, he refrained from commenting further on whether Berlin takes Trump&rsquo;s statements about NATO allies Denmark and Canada seriously, saying only that the German government had &ldquo;taken note&rdquo; of his comments.

The European Union has blocked over $1 billion in funding to Hungary, citing the country's failure to implement key reforms. This decision highlights ongoing tensions between the EU and Hungary over rule-of-law issues and governance concerns.

EU blocks over $1bn funding to Hungary, cites reforms failures

After five decades, Russia's gas pipeline to Europe via Ukraine came to an end after Kyiv refused to let any passage that would finance Moscow's military machine.
The end to the key route comes as the deal expired on December 31, increasing the risks to the European continent's energy security and forcing it to rely heavily on its reserves.
Both Europe and Russia confirmed the deal's expiry on Wednesday.
This comes as central European nations are depleting their winter stock at the quickest pace in years. The blockage forces them to acquire gas from elsewhere, which is more expensive. This puts more strain on supply.
<h2>What will change?</h2>
A little over 5 per cent of Europe's energy needs comes from this route.
Yet some nations in the region are still feeling the effects of the energy crisis that Russia's invasion of Ukraine caused.
In recent weeks, the impending supply restriction has contributed to energy prices surging 50 per cent year-on-year.
As the continent's reliance on worldwide liquefied natural gas grows, it is becoming increasingly vulnerable to market instability.
Ukraine has remained a vital route for gas deliveries into Europe for the past fifty years.
The cutoff puts more strain on supplies at a time when central Europe is already seeing the fastest depletion of its winter reserve in years since several nations that have depended on the flows will have to find more costly gas elsewhere.
<h2>Cost of the deal's expiry?</h2>
Bloomberg estimates that Russia would lose almost $6 billion in annual income if it were to cut off one of its two remaining gas pipeline lines to Europe.
Not only will Ukraine forego transit payments, but it will also relinquish its long-established geopolitical role as a cheap energy supplier to Western allies.
Even though it has come at a greater expense, most of Gazprom PJSC's central European clients have found other suppliers.
In a Telegram message, the Russian gas giant said, "Due to the repeated and explicit refusal of the Ukrainian side" to extend the deal, Gazprom PJSC "was deprived of the technical and legal opportunity to supply gas for transit through the territory of Ukraine from January 1, 2025."
Slovensky Plynarensky Priemysel, Slovakia's biggest gas utility, has announced that it will spend an additional &euro;90 million ($93 million) annually to ensure more consistent imports through other channels.
Additionally, it cautioned that a harsh winter would put the entire continent of Europe at greater risk.
There won't be an urgent shortage in Europe, but it may make prepping for the upcoming heating season harder. Inventory levels in the region have been dropping sharply, and the capacity is currently less than 75 per cent.
<h2>Putin's goal gets a boost</h2>
Russian President Vladimir Putin is now expected to intensify his long-held goal of increasing LNG shipments in response to the decline in Moscow's piped supplies to Europe.
Russia continues to sell record quantities of liquefied gas to Europe despite demands from several European nations to cut off Russian imports for Mozcow's invasion of Ukraine.
Restrictions imposed by Western countries make it difficult for Russia to expand its LNG exports any further.
However, US President-elect Donald Trump may try to change these restrictions after possible peace talks.
As Europe fights to recover from the most significant cost-of-living crisis in decades, the reduction of essential Russian piped gas risks escalating prices for consumers and enterprises.
<h2>Slovaks hit the hardest</h2>
Numerous European countries have waged an intense campaign to maintain the supply.
Last month, Robert Fico, the prime minister of Slovakia, pleaded with his European colleagues to find a way to keep the gas flowing. Fico said Slovakia receives up to &euro;500 million in transit fees annually.
Even more concerning for regional energy security, he dared to scare Ukraine with a potential power outage.
The gas stop, he said on Wednesday, would affect every EU member state "drastically."
Fico said, "Are we just going to let that pipeline dry up?"
He added, "In the name of what? Because you don't like the Russians? Fine, I like them."
Since his return to office last year, the prime minister has vocally criticised the European Union's military assistance to Ukraine, asserting that the backing extends the conflict.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has firmly rejected any deal that would send funds to Russia's coffers.
Last week, Putin said negotiating a new gas transportation arrangement via Ukraine would be difficult.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has asserted that the end of transit will not substantially impact regional energy markets. She has also established a political objective to eradicate Russian fossil fuels by 2027.
<h2>What about Serbia, Hungary and Austria?</h2>
Russia continues supplying gas to countries like Serbia and Hungary through the TurkStream pipeline, which circumvents Ukraine.
However, that route is inadequate to offset the loss of Ukraine transit entirely.
Another route through Poland is currently obstructed. The Nord Stream pipeline connecting Germany to Russia sustained damage from explosions in 2022, and Berlin has yet to authorise the subsequent Nord Stream 2 connection.
Even though Austria was formerly one of Gazprom's clients, the country's main utility, OMV AG, terminated the long-term supply arrangement with the Russian company last month, saying that it hadn't received gas deliveries since mid-November.
<h2>History and the dynamics</h2>
Gas shipments to European clients during winter months have been hampered due to disputes between Moscow and Kyiv.
Moscow and Kyiv reached an agreement to settle their dispute in 2009, which caused Russian supplies via Ukraine to halt for about two weeks. The frigid temperatures affected more than 20 nations. The 2006 interruption was less severe.
The agreement that recently ended in 2019 was also the product of last-minute talks. Unfortunately, a speedy settlement is now improbable due to the war and the EU's overall unwillingness to purchase gas from Russia.
<h2>At what cost?</h2>
The end of the transit deal has caused European gas prices to surge to their highest level since November 2023.
On Tuesday, February, gas in the Netherlands, Europe's gas benchmark, reached &euro;50 a megawatt-hour, an increase of about 4.5 per cent.
The benchmark futures have increased by more than 50 per cent due to the price volatility created by uncertainty over these supplies.
Just as central Europe is bracing for lower temperatures in January, Slovakia and a handful of other governments in the area are scheduled to cease receiving supplies.
It will be more difficult to meet storage goals for the upcoming heating season because inventories are also running out faster than normal.

The gas stop, he said on Wednesday, would affect every EU member state "drastically." Fico said, "Are we just going to let that pipeline dry up?" He added, "In the name of what? Because you don't like the Russians? Fine, I like them." Since his return to office last year, the prime minister has vocally criticised the European Union's military assistance to Ukraine, asserting that the backing extends the conflict. What about Serbia, Hungary and Austria? History and the dynamics Gas shipments to European clients during winter months have been hampered due to disputes between Moscow and Kyiv. At what cost? The end of the transit deal has caused European gas prices to surge to their highest level since November 2023. On Tuesday, February, gas in the Netherlands, Europe's gas benchmark, reached €50 a megawatt-hour, an increase of about 4.5 per cent. (With inputs from agencies)

'Unacceptable and incompatible': France warns over threats against Georgia's pro-EU president

North Korea on Thursday lashed out at "reckless provocation" by the United States and its allies for criticising Pyongyang's support for Russia's war in Ukraine, including the deployment of troops.

In a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, a foreign ministry spokesman said the 10 nations and the European Union (EU) were "distorting and slandering" Pyongyang's "normal cooperative" ties with Moscow.

Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to reinforce Russia's war effort, including to the Kursk border region, where Ukrainian forces seized territory earlier this year.

On Monday, those nations and the EU said North Korea's growing involvement in the war in Ukraine in support of Russia constituted a "dangerous expansion of the conflict, with serious consequences for European and Indo-Pacific security".

The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and the high representative of the European Union signed the statement, released by Washington.

"We urge the DPRK to cease immediately all assistance for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, including by withdrawing its troops", the statement said.

But Pyongyang's foreign ministry fired back, with the spokesman offering its "serious concern and protest, denouncing and rejecting in the strongest terms the reckless provocation of the US and its vassal forces".

North Korea said the "madness" of the response by "hostile forces" indicated that the increased cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow was effectively "deterring the US and the West's ill-intended extension of influence".

It did not specifically mention its troop deployment alongside Russian forces, only saying the war in Ukraine "has been prolonged" by what it called the "adventuristic military policy and policy of exclusive alliance" of Washington and its allies.

North Korea "will firmly safeguard its legitimate right as a sovereign state, put no restrictions on exercising it and continue to make crucial efforts to preserve regional and global peace and security", the statement carried by KCNA said.
