Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk, on Tuesday,&nbsp;criticised a decision by Germany to tighten controls on its land borders, calling for urgent consultations with other affected countries and more support for Warsaw's own immigration policies.

Relations between Poland and Germany have become warmer since Tusk's pro-European coalition came to power in December, but there is exasperation in Warsaw at Berlin's reluctance to commit to joint European Union financing for defence and strengthening the bloc's eastern border.

Poland has been facing what it says is a migrant crisis orchestrated by Belarus and Russia on its eastern border since 2021.

With Germany seeking to toughen its stance on immigration following a surge in arrivals, Berlin on Monday announced plans to impose tighter controls at all of the country's land borders, which would normally be part of the Schengen free-movement zone, for six months starting on Sept. 16.

<h2>'Unacceptable', says Tusk</h2>

"Such actions are unacceptable from the Polish point of view," Tusk told a meeting of Polish ambassadors in Warsaw.

"Today we need full support from Germany and the entire EU when it comes to helping in organising, financing, arming the eastern border, also in the context of illegal migration."

He said that what Poland needed was not tighter controls on its border with Germany, but more engagement from Berlin and others in securing the EU's external border.

'Unacceptable': Poland PM Tusk slams German decision to tighten border controls

Russia-Ukraine War:&nbsp;Hours after the European Union claimed on Monday (Sep 9) that Iran had supplied Russia with ballistic missiles, citing intelligence reports from allies, the Kremlin has responded.&nbsp;

Moscow did not issue a denial when asked about the allegations and instead preferred to comment on the growing relationship with Tehran.&nbsp;

"We have seen this report, it is not every time that this kind of information is true,"&nbsp;Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

"Iran is our important partner, we are developing our trade and economic relations, we are developing our cooperation and dialogue in all possible areas, including the most sensitive areas."

<h2>What did the EU say?&nbsp;</h2>

The European Union said it was considering fresh sanctions on Tehran if it was confirmed that Russia received the said weapons for its war against Ukraine.&nbsp;

"We are aware of the credible information provided by allies on the delivery of Iranian ballistic missiles to Russia," EU spokesman Peter Stano said.&nbsp;

"We are looking further into it with our member states and if confirmed, this delivery would represent a substantive material escalation in Iran's support for Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine."

Notably, Iran has provided Russia with hundreds of drones since the war began over two years ago. However,&nbsp;the supply of ballistic missiles represents a deeper level of involvement in the conflict.&nbsp;

Ukraine War: Iran supplied missiles to Russia? After US, EU allegations, Moscow issues statement

In a recent address, Paolo Gentiloni, the European Union's (EU's)&nbsp;outgoing Commissioner for economy, highlighted the resilience of Europe's economy in the face of significant global challenges. Despite difficult forecasts predicting recessions and instability due to the Ukraine conflict, the EU's economy has shown signs of slow but steady growth.

Resilience in the face of challenges and navigating dynamics with China<o:p></o:p>

Gentiloni noted that the European economy managed to evade the alarming predictions of economic downturns. During an interview with CNBC at the Ambrosetti Forum, he further emphasised the European Union’s (EU's) need to balance its commitments to Ukraine while maintaining important trade relationships, particularly with China. This delicate balance is crucial as the EU navigates its future amidst complex geopolitical dynamics.

Emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU is now grappling with a cost-of-living crisis and high inflation, worsened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and subsequent energy supply issues. Early indicators showed a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 0.3 per cent for the second quarter of this year. According to the European Commission, a GDP increase of 1 per cent is forecasted for 2024, driven by rising private consumption and a robust labour market.

The challenging trade situation of Europe with China remains a major issue that needs to be addressed soon. The recent tariff increases on Chinese electric vehicle imports, imposed to protect European industries, signify the EU's commitment to fair trade practices. Gentiloni highlighted the need for the incoming Commission to prioritize addressing relations with China, as trade issues coupled with support for Ukraine will define Europe's forthcoming strategies.

The EU's decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) was made to counter unfair subsidies that benefited Chinese manufacturers and posed a risk to European EV producers. This move has placed the EU in Beijing's sights, underscoring the need for careful navigation of these trade issues. Focus needs to be thrown on resolving differences and finding a reasonable solution.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Opportunities<o:p></o:p>

The challenges ahead increase considerably due to the upcoming US elections and the uncertain political landscape in Europe. Gentiloni remained optimistic, indicating that even with a potential change in the US administration; he does not foresee significant shifts in economic ties. He emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine and maintaining open international trade channels, which does not align with accepting China's stance on trade.

Gentiloni also cautioned that failure to enhance competitiveness, progress towards a capital markets union, and address defense challenges could render the evolving global landscape, making it extremely challenging for the Europeans. As he prepares to depart from his role, his commitment to contributing to European matters remains firm.

Hence, as Gentiloni prepares to leave the Commission, he has not yet revealed his future plans. However, he intends to contribute to European matters and perhaps engage in Italian politics. The left-leaning politician may face challenges from rising far-right support across Europe, which has prompted skepticism about the current Commission's ability to bring about needed changes.

Therefore, Europe's economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the face of difficult challenges. As it navigates the complicated landscape of global trade and geopolitical tensions, the EU must remain focused on its commitment to fair trade practices and support for Ukraine. The incoming Commission will need to prioritize these issues to ensure the continued growth and stability of the European economy.

Europe's economy defies difficult forecasts, still, faces new challenges

French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Michel Barnier, the European Union's former Brexit negotiator, as his new prime minister on Thursday, in a bid to put an end to political paralysis following an inconclusive snap election.

The discreet, conservative politician will quickly face a baptism of fire as time is running out to prepare France's 2025 budget, which could trigger a vote of no confidence if parties in the bitterly divided parliament are not satisfied.

The leftwing alliance that won June's election accused Macron of ignoring the result by picking a conservative. It called for demonstrations against Barnier's selection but did not have enough seats to block the choice on its own.

The far-right National Rally (RN), parliament's biggest single party, indicated it would not block Barnier for now, but could do so later if a range of demands were not met.

At 73, Barnier is the oldest prime minister in France's modern political history, taking over from Gabriel Attal, who was the youngest.

"The election has been stolen," hard-left leader Jean-Luc Melenchon said. Another hard-left lawmaker, Mathilde Panot, called it an "unacceptable democratic coup".

Macron had ruled out asking the left to form a government after other parties said they would immediately vote it down.

RN leader Jordan Bardella said the party acknowledged Macron's choice and would judge Barnier's "general policy speech, his budgetary decisions, and his actions on their own merit".

"We will plead for the major emergencies of the French, the cost of living, security, immigration - to finally be addressed, and we reserve all political means of action if this is not the case in the coming weeks."

Barnier is a staunch pro-European and moderate career politician, but he toughened his discourse considerably during his failed 2021 bid to get his conservative party's ticket for the presidential election, saying immigration was out of control.

Macron had considered a string of potential prime ministers in recent weeks, none of whom mustered enough support to guarantee a stable government, which was his main goal.

<h2>'Out of Mothballs'</h2>

French bank shares edged up after Barnier was appointed. Government borrowing costs fell slightly after the announcement, while the euro nudged higher, in positive signs from financial markets.

Barnier's political views are overall close to Macron's, and it was crucial for the French president that his new prime minister not try to undo reforms pushed through over the past years, in particular pension changes that angered the left.

It remains unclear if Barnier will fully try to implement Macron's political agenda or bring in new proposals. He will need in any case to negotiate with other parties to get legislation adopted in parliament.

As Macron's hunt for a prime minister dragged on, public finances deteriorated and outgoing Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire has said that tens of billions of euros in budget cuts are needed to plug the hole.

Macron's gamble to call the snap parliamentary election in June backfired, with his centrist coalition losing dozens of seats and no party winning an absolute majority. Voters did, however, rally to deny the RN a victory.

RN lawmaker Laurent Jacobelli said a condition for not voting Barnier down would be that parliament be dissolved as soon as possible - which would be early July next year. Barnier should also signal support for a change to proportional representation to replace France's system of two-round voting for single constituencies, he said.

He made clear the RN was not particularly enthusiastic about Barnier.

"They are taking out of mothballs those who have governed France for 40 years," Jacobelli told TF1.

French President Macron appoints Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as new prime minister

New car sales in the European Union saw a modest increase of 0.2% in July, with growth tempered by declines in key markets like France and Germany. Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) released on Thursday highlighted a significant downturn in battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales, despite overall positive trends in car registrations.

While Belgium, the Netherlands, and France reported gains in electric vehicle (EV) registrations, these were not enough to counteract a nearly 37% drop in BEV sales in Germany, one of Europe's largest automotive markets. This decline contributed to a broader decrease in market share for battery-electric vehicles.

The numbers reveal a mixed landscape for the EU car market. Electrified vehicles, which include fully electric models, plug-in hybrids, and hybrid vehicles, represented 50.9% of new passenger car registrations in July, up from 47% the previous year. However, sales of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids fell by 10.8% and 14.1%, respectively, while hybrid-electric car sales surged by 25.7%. Hybrids now account for 32% of the market, up from 25.5% a year ago.

Among Europe's major carmakers, Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault experienced declines in sales of 2.2%, 5.2%, and 1.7%, respectively, reflecting increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers. Tesla saw a notable 14.7% drop in sales, while China’s SAIC Motor reported a 24.2% increase.

The European Commission recently adjusted its tariff plans for Chinese EVs, reducing the proposed tariff on Tesla’s China-made cars to 9% while maintaining higher tariffs of up to 36.3% on other Chinese EV imports. Stellantis, which experienced the steepest decline in sales, has also faced financial challenges, including a significant drop in revenue and operating profit for the first half of the year.

In Germany, the end of EV purchase subsidies in December 2023 has contributed to the slowdown in BEV sales, highlighting the shifting dynamics in the EU’s automotive market.

What to expect after European Union's AI law comes into force?

The European Union is currently grappling with a complex&nbsp;issue regarding the imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China. This matter has brought to light significant divisions among EU member states, as evidenced by a recent non-binding advisory vote.

The European Commission, which is responsible for overseeing the EU's trade policies, has proposed provisional duties of up to 37.6 per cent&nbsp;on Chinese-built EVs. The Commission argues that these tariffs are necessary to counter what they perceive as unfair subsidies provided by the Chinese government to their EV manufacturers. To gauge the sentiment among EU members, the Commission conducted an advisory vote, the results of which were revealed on Tuesday.

The outcome of this vote demonstrates the lack of consensus among EU nations on this issue. According to sources familiar with the voting process, twelve EU members expressed support for the tariffs, while four voted against them. Eleven member states chose to abstain, highlighting the uncertainty and hesitation surrounding this decision.

Although this vote is not legally binding, it carries significant weight and is expected to influence the Commission's final decision on whether to implement definitive duties. The Commission will likely take these results into careful consideration as they move forward with what is being described as the EU's most high-profile trade case to date.

Should the Commission decide to advocate for permanent duties after its investigation, the matter will proceed to a binding vote among EU members. For the tariffs to be rejected, a qualified majority of 15 member countries representing 65 per cent&nbsp;of the EU population would need to vote against them. If the voting pattern from the advisory vote were to be replicated in this binding vote, the definitive duties would be implemented, typically for five years.

However, the substantial number of abstentions in the advisory vote underscores the ambivalence felt by many EU members. These nations are caught between acknowledging the Commission's arguments for maintaining a level playing field in trade and the potential risks of igniting a trade war with China. Beijing has already threatened extensive retaliation if these tariffs are imposed, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

The proposed tariffs have faced opposition from German carmakers, who have a significant stake in the Chinese market. Last year, these manufacturers made one-third of their sales in China. They have urged the EU to reconsider the tariffs, which would not only affect Chinese producers like BYD, Geely, and SAIC but also impact Western automakers such as Tesla and BMW, who manufacture vehicles in China.

The voting patterns reveal interesting dynamics among EU members. France, Italy, and Spain supported the tariffs, while Germany, Finland, and Sweden chose to abstain. A German source described their abstention as an act of "critical solidarity" with the Commission, indicating a nuanced stance on the issue. Finland expressed doubts about whether the tariffs would serve the EU's interests, particularly given that not all European car manufacturers are in favour of these measures.

Swedish Trade Minister Johan Forssell emphasised the importance of dialogue between the Commission and China to find a mutually agreeable solution. This sentiment reflects a desire for diplomatic resolution rather than escalating trade tensions.

The Commission will continue its investigation for an additional three months before making a final decision. In a potential move towards compromise, there are indications that the Commission may consider lower tariffs for specific models, such as BMW's China-made electric Mini and Volkswagen's Cupra Tavascan.

This situation highlights the delicate balance the EU must strike between protecting its domestic industries and maintaining positive trade relations with China, a major global economic power. The outcome of this case could have far-reaching implications for the European automotive industry, international trade relations, and the future of electric vehicle manufacturing and sales in the EU.

The European Union is currently grappling with a complex issue regarding the imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China. This matter has brought to light significant divisions among EU member states, as evidenced by a recent non-binding advisory vote.

The European Union is currently grappling with a complex issue regarding the imposition of tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs) imported from China. This matter has brought to light significant divisions among EU member states, as evidenced by a recent non-binding advisory vote. The European Commission, which is responsible for overseeing the EU's trade policies, has proposed provisional duties of up to 37.6 per cent on Chinese-built EVs. For the tariffs to be rejected, a qualified majority of 15 member countries representing 65 per cent of the EU population would need to vote against them. The European Union's climate monitor has revealed that last month was the hottest June on record across the globe. The global temperature in June was record warm for the 13th straight month and it marked the 12th straight month that the world was 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial times.

EU climate monitor warns weather extremes

European Union's climate monitor on&nbsp;Monday (Jul 8) revealed that last month was the hottest June on record across the globe. The global average temperature recorded last month broke the previous June record set in 2023.&nbsp;

Since June last year, the world has baked for 12 consecutive months, setting a streak of unprecedented global heat, as per the&nbsp;Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The data suggests that 2024 could pip 2023 as the hottest year since record-keeping began.&nbsp;

"This is more than a statistical oddity and it highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate," said the service director, Carlo Buontempo.

"Even if this specific streak of extremes ends at some point, we are bound to see new records being broken as the climate continues to warm."

C3S, a scientific organisation that belongs to the EU's space programme used data from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations to arrive at the conclusion.&nbsp;The data showed that June 2024 was the 12th month in succession with temperatures 1.5C greater than their average between 1850 and 1900.&nbsp;

The data by the EU climate monitor does not mean that the 1.5C warming limit agreed upon in Paris in 2015 had&nbsp;been reached as the goal is measured in&nbsp;decades, not individual years. However, Copernicus&nbsp;last month stated it was very likely (80 per cent chance) that Earth's annual average temperatures would at least temporarily exceed the 1.5C mark during the next five years.

The severe heatwave and its effects were on full display during the Haj pilgrimage last month when reports stated that more than 1,000 people had died due to heat-related illnesses.&nbsp;

Hottest June in human history recorded as Earth continues to bake, data shows

A Romanian court ruled on Friday that internet personality&nbsp;Andrew&nbsp;Tate&nbsp;can travel within the European Union without restrictions while he awaits trial on human trafficking charges, his lawyer said.

Tate&nbsp;was indicted in mid-2023 along with his brother, Tristan, and two Romanian women on charges of human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women, accusations they have denied.

In April this year, the Bucharest court ruled their trial can start, a decision&nbsp;Tate&nbsp;has appealed.

Pending a ruling on his appeal, the four suspects had been banned from leaving Romania, but Friday's court decision lifted the restriction for the European Union. The decision is not final and can be appealed by prosecutors.

"My judges decided ... I'm allowed to leave Romania, so do we take the (Ferrari) SF90 to Italy, the (Maserati) MC20 to Cannes, the (Ferrari) 812 Competition to Paris, where do I go?"&nbsp;Tate&nbsp;said in a video posted on social media platform X.

The&nbsp;Tate&nbsp;brothers, both former kickboxers with dual US&nbsp;and British citizenship, are the highest-profile suspects facing trial for human trafficking in Romania and their case will be a test for Romania's anti-organised crime prosecuting unit DIICOT.

The brothers were held in police custody during the criminal investigation from late December 2022 until April 2023 to prevent them from fleeing the country or tampering with evidence.

They were then placed under house arrest until August, when courts put them under judicial control, a lighter preventative measure.

"Andrew&nbsp;and Tristan are still determined to clear their name and reputation; however, they are grateful to the courts for placing this trust in them," the brothers' lead defence lawyer Eugen Vidineac said in a statement.

Romanian prosecutors have said the&nbsp;Tate&nbsp;brothers recruited their victims by seducing them and falsely claiming to want a relationship or marriage.

They said the victims were then taken to properties outside the capital Bucharest, and through physical violence and mental intimidation were sexually exploited by being forced to produce pornographic content for social media sites that generated large financial gains.

Tate, a self-described misogynist, has gained millions of fans by promoting an ultra-masculine lifestyle that critics say denigrates women.

They could be preparing to harden attempts to enable the usage of internal-combustion engines in newly assembled automobiles beyond the eradication of all CO2-emitting cars in 2035 – Europe’s oldest and largest party of lawmakers.

Germany already won a proposed stay of execution of ICE technology when the European Commission last year committed to generate a legal avenue for selling new cars that can only run on synthetic fuels, commonly referred to as e-fuels, and carbon-neutral biofuels that are literally fossil fuel surrogates.

Now the centre-right European People’s Party – EPP which was an ally to the Socialists on the issue has plans to turn this promise into proper legislation in a document, a draft seen by the Reuters news agency. This week in Portugal, the party’s legislators are in a meeting debating on what should form the party’s policies of the official 5-year term of the European Union Parliament.

The draft document of priorities states that the ‘The rules for CO2 reduction for new cars and vans to have options for the use of other zero-emission fuels post 2035 must be revised.’ The document also supplements the idea that the group intends to “remove the ban on the internal combustion engine but work on advanced ICE technologies.”

This means that carmakers can carry on with the advancements in ICE technology for more than the next decade using carbon-neutral fuels and most probably equipped with chips that would prevent the use of standard gas or diesel.

It would also help to ease current industry concern that recent low sales of battery-electric vehicles indicate that many consumers will never consider them suitable for their mobility needs. In its turn, the move would be beneficial to the expanded application of the hybrid powertrains as well.

The speaker of the European Parliament is also the EPP delegation, the newly-elected two-term holder, Ursula Von der Leyen, the former German defense minister whose task is to convince other groups, such as the socialist and democratic ones, which are against the weakening of Europe’s climate change policies.&nbsp;

In a clarificatory comment, the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), Gerassimos Thomas, Director General of the European Commission's Directorate General of Taxation and Customs (DG TAXUD), has emphasised that the CBAM initiative is not a tax or tariff, but a measure designed to deal with carbon emissions. Addressing misconceptions around it, Thomas pointed out that CBAM is intended to promote sustainability, rather than acting as a trade barrier for Indian companies.

Speaking to WION, Thomas highlighted, “The instrument is not designed as a barrier or a tax; it is just an instrument that allows companies with more sustainable products to benefit.”&nbsp;

The clarification dispels concerns of Indian exporters as many see it as a potential obstacle to their access to the European market.

European Union countries approved a flagship policy to restore damaged nature on Monday (June 17), after months of delay, making it the first green law to pass since European Parliament elections this month.

The nature restoration law is among the EU's biggest environmental policies, requiring member states to introduce measures restoring nature on a fifth of their land and sea by 2030.

The European Union’s tariffs on electric vehicles imported from china has ignited a trade dispute. The EU accuses china of unfairly subsidizing its ev industry, giving Chinese manufacturers a competitive edge. China vehemently denies these claims, calling the tariffs "Protectionist."

The European Commission made a significant announcement on Wednesday, revealing its intention to levy additional duties on imported Chinese electric vehicles, a move that could potentially ignite tensions with China. These tariffs, slated to take effect next month, could reach as high as 38.1%, depending on the manufacturer.

According to the company breakdown provided by the Commission, the provisional tariffs are as follows:

- BYD (17.4%)
This includes various entities under BYD, such as BYD Auto Co Ltd and Changsha BYD Auto Co Ltd.

- Geely (20%)
This includes Geely's subsidiaries, including Zhejiang Geely Automobile Co Ltd

- SAIC Group (38.1%)
&nbsp;SAIC MAXUS Automotive Co Ltd and other entities fall under this bracket.

- Other cooperating companies: 21%
This category includes well-known names like BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd and Chery Automobile Co Ltd.

- All other companies: 38.1%
Manufacturers not explicitly listed elsewhere face this highest tariff rate.

The Commission also pointed out that some firms like Tesla may get their individual rate of duty later in November. Based on the above analysis, decision made by the Europe Commission may have serious implications for the member states, both economically and diplomatically. Its intention is to shield local industries from cheaper Chinese imports which may trigger China into taking actions that could lead to a warfare of sorts between the two giants in the global economy.&nbsp;

Nevertheless, Chinese EV maker Nio does not plan to retreat from the European electric vehicle market; on the contrary, the company continues to declare the desire to contribute to the development of the EV market in Europe and find new opportunities to improve its service for users in the region.

In reaction to the changes made by the EU and its decision to list Nio among the cooperating companies that may be further be subjected to 21% duty rate, the company stated that it is constantly monitoring the situation and is ready to make decisions that are in its best interest. By suggesting the specificity of a positive outcome when the investigation is said and done, Nio acted as a stimulant for hope.

Secretary general at the China Passenger Car Association, Cui Dongshu said that majority of Chinese firms including those in the electric vehicle sector are likely to be unfazed by the EU’s proposed tariffs as these fall within expected levels. This feeling is in line with other feelings we encountered in China with respect to what the EU’s tariff measures may contain or imply.

EU implements tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

It's been high election drama in Europe as predicted, The block has taken a sharp right turn and this comes amid the challenging political landscape. Here is a report on five key takeaways from the European Union's parliamentary polls.

EU elections: Far-right makes strong gains; ruling parties suffer

In the coming week, the European Union is anticipated to unveil the tariff rates that it intends to levy on electric vehicles imported from China. This decision comes from the Commission's assertion that Chinese manufacturers receive excessive subsidies from their government, which grants them an unfair advantage.

In the coming week, the European Union is anticipated to unveil the tariff rates that it intends to levy on electric vehicles imported from China. This decision comes from the Commission's assertion that Chinese manufacturers receive excessive subsidies from their government, which grants them an unfair advantage. This move is likely to provoke stern reactions and the possibility of retaliatory measures from Beijing. The development follows closely on the heels of the United States' recent decision to quadruple the duties imposed on Chinese electric vehicles to a staggering 100 per cent. While the European Union's tariff rates are expected to be significantly lower than those imposed by the United States, they will nevertheless apply to imports from prominent Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Geely, as well as Western automakers like Tesla that export vehicles from China to the European market. The impetus behind this move is the growing challenge European automakers face from an influx of lower-cost electric vehicles originating from Chinese rivals. The European automotive industry itself is virtually unanimous in its lack of support for the imposition of these tariffs. This sentiment is particularly pronounced among German automakers, whose sales in China constitute a significant portion of their overall revenue, consequently heightening their concerns about potential retribution from Beijing. European automakers import vehicles manufactured in China for their brands, further complicating the situation. However, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, has repeatedly emphasized the necessity for Europe to take action to prevent China from inundating the bloc's market with subsidized electric vehicles. As Will Roberts, the head of automotive research at Rho Motion, warned, "If provoked, the reaction and repercussions could lead to a trade war which would be devastating for a region that is still heavily dependent on Chinese dominated supply chains in order to achieve its lofty climate goals." China has vehemently rebuked the European Union over its anti-subsidy investigation, urging cooperation instead and lobbying individual EU member states. Nevertheless, Beijing has yet to explicitly outline the nature of its potential response should tariffs be imposed. So far, China has already initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of brandy, primarily targeting French-made products. In April, China enacted legislation aimed at strengthening its ability to retaliate should the United States or the European Union impose tariffs on exports from the world's second-largest economy. The European Union's pre-disclosure notice comes just a few weeks before the July 4 deadline for imposing provisional measures, which could potentially apply retroactively for the preceding 90 days. Interested parties will be granted three working days to comment on the accuracy of the Commission's calculations. The investigation will continue until late October, at which point a decision will be made regarding the imposition of definitive duties, typically lasting for five years. The proposed duties would take effect unless a significant majority of EU governments oppose them. This timeline leaves room for the possibility of a potential deal being struck between Brussels and Beijing. Chinese executives are hopeful that such negotiations could soften the impact of the tariffs. Analysts anticipate that the tariff rates will range between 10 and 25 per cent. For every additional 10 per cent levied on top of the existing 10 per cent tariff, European importers of Chinese electric vehicles could face an added cost of approximately $1 billion, based on 2023 trade data. This would deal another blow to a sector already grappling with slowing demand and declining prices within the domestic market. The financial impact of these tariffs is expected to escalate further this year as Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers expand their export operations to Europe.
