Roberto Mancini has resigned as head coach of Italy's national team, the country's football federation (FIGC) said on Sunday, ending a five-year spell in which Italy experienced continental success but missed out on soccer's showpiece tournament.

Mancini took charge of the four-times World Cup winners in 2018 after they failed to qualify for that year's tournament in Russia, having previously not missed a World Cup final since 1958.

Following the retirements of veterans Andrea Barzagli, Daniele De Rossi and captain Gianluigi Buffon, Mancini guided a transitional Italy side to success at the European Championship in 2021.

His team also went on a run of 37 games without defeat between Oct. 2018 and Oct. 2021 -- a record in men's international soccer.

Italy performed well at the Nations League under Mancini, finishing third in the 2020-21 and 2022-23 editions of the tournament.

"A significant page in the history of the Azzurri, which began in May 2018 and ended with the 2023 Nations League Finals, comes to an end," the FIGC said in a statement. "In between, the victory at Euro 2020, a triumph conquered by a group in which all the individuals were able to become a team."

However, Mancini was unable to take Italy back to the World Cup, with the team once again failing to qualify for last year's tournament in Qatar following a stunning 1-0 loss at home to North Macedonia in a playoff tie.

Following that failed World Cup qualifying campaign, Mancini came under intense pressure in the Italian media to resign but received backing from the national federation president to continue in the role.

Mancini's resignation comes just days after the former international forward was given responsibility for Italy's Under-21 and Under-20 teams in a bid to integrate the same styles and systems of play across age groups.

Italy are next in action in September, when they take on North Macedonia and Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying matches.

"Taking into account the important and upcoming commitments for the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers... the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days," the federation said.

Group leaders Scotland were not blown off course by a near two-hour interruption caused by heavy rain as they maintained their 100 percent record with a 2-0 win over Georgia.

Callum McGregor scored in the sixth minute in farcical conditions before the game was suspended.

A number of pitch inspections then took place amid reports that Georgia wanted the game postponed before it eventually restarted at 9:35 pm local time (1935 GMT) and Scott McTominay secured the points.

Portugal's Euro 2024 Qualifier match late Saturday night ended with a 3-0 victory against against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes scored one and two goals, respectively. The game, however, will be best remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo being lifted up in the air by a fan.

Ronaldo, one of the most famous athletes in the world, has a huge fan following. It was evident during the football match as a fan invaded the pitch to meet his hero. A video of the incident has been going viral on social media as well.&nbsp;

In the video, the fan, who is carrying the Portugal flag, can be seen giving Ronaldo a bear hug before touching his feet. The fan lifts the football star afterwards in air as security comes around. Ronaldo, surprisingly, remains calm and does not protest. The footballer, however, seems to be at more ease after being put down by the fan.

The game, played at Portugal's home stadium Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, was Ronaldo's 199th. He will be playing the 200th match for his country against Iceland on Tuesday.

Portugal are in Group J for the qualifiers along with Slovakia, Luxemburg, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The top two teams will qualify for the main tournament to be played in Germany from June 14 to July 14 next year.

Portugal, so far, have won all the three fixtures they have played and are at the top of the points table with nine points. Before the game on Saturday, they had won their opening game against Liechtenstein 4-0 and had handed a 6-0 drubbing to Luxemburg, on March 24 and 27, respectively.

France's win in their last outing this season follows their 3-0 defeat of minnows Gibraltar last Friday and leaves them clear on top of qualifying Group B with 12 points from four games.

They have not conceded a goal so far and are six points clear of Greece, albeit having played a game more.

"It has been a very long season for the players. They have been waiting for their holidays but we did what we needed to do to win the match," coach Didier Deschamps told broadcaster TF1.

"This is a team with less experience than six months ago, but there is plenty of quality."

Having already opened their campaign with wins against the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland in March, last year's World Cup runners-up appear certainties to qualify for next year's finals in Germany.

Their next match is against Ireland in September, by which time it will be clear where Mbappe will be playing his club football next season.

The 24-year-old, who took over as skipper of Les Bleus when Hugo Lloris quit international football following the World Cup, last week confirmed he would not extend his contract at PSG, which expires next year.

That has raised the prospect of the Qatar-backed club selling him in this transfer window, even if he has said he intends to stay with the French champions next season.

Mbappe put the talk of his future to one side to score a penalty against Gibraltar and he was the matchwinner here in what was not a vintage French display.

France got the chance to go in front when Mavropanos caught Antoine Griezmann in the head with a high boot four minutes after the restart.

A spot-kick was awarded and VfB Stuttgart stopper Mavropanos was booked with Griezmann needing his bloodied head bandaged.

Vlachodimos saved Mbappe's penalty the first time but he could not repeat his heroics when a retake was ordered, despite diving the right way.

It was Mbappe's 13th goal in 13 games for France this season, to go with 41 in all competitions for PSG.

He now has 40 goals in 70 games for his country and needs just one more goal to equal Michel Platini's tally in a France shirt.

Greece, the 2004 European champions, have been enjoying something of a revival under their Uruguayan coach Gustavo Poyet, but their chances of claiming anything from this game died when Mavropanos was dismissed in the 69th minute.

Kolo Muani was sent through on goal by a Kingsley Coman pass only to be bundled over by Mavropanos. Already on a yellow card, this time the defender saw a straight red.

However, France could not add to their lead with the extra man, with substitute Ousmane Dembele just unable to get on the end of Mbappe's low centre.

"This is the hardest match we have had to play since I came here," admitted Poyet, who became Greece coach in February last year.

"The difference between France and us is incredible. I don't like to lose but we learned a lot today."

Euro 2024 hosts Germany lost 1-0 to Poland in a friendly in Warsaw on Friday, with Jakub Kiwor's first-half goal piling more pressure on coach Hansi Flick.&nbsp;

Poland's victory was just their second over their neighbours in 22 games dating back to 1933, and left Germany with a single win in four games since their disastrous World Cup campaign in Qatar.&nbsp;

Kiwor headed in a corner midway through the first half to give his side the lead against a disorganised Germany defence, adding to Flick's problems ahead of next year's Euro on home soil.

Despite the "totally disappointing result", Flick said his side had time to get things right.&nbsp;

"We're in a process and we're trying things out" Flick explained. "There's a long way to go until we'll get there."

"In June next year, we'll have a team that functions together."

Wingback Robin Gosens, who just six days ago played for Inter Milan as they lost the Champions League final to Man City 1-0, said his side wanted to get Germany "into a spirit of optimism and to get the country behind us."

"We know this can only be done through results, through victories."

Poland captain Robert Lewandowski, who won the Champions League with Bayern Munich under Flick in 2020, said "it wasn't perfect... we tried to make Germany's day difficult."

Under fire for continued experimentation with the team stuttering, Flick made nine changes from the team which drew 3-3 with Ukraine on Monday in Bremen.&nbsp;

Only captain Joshua Kimmich and centre-back Antonio Ruediger remained, with Flick handing 21-year-old central defender Malick Thiaw a debut as part of a back three.&nbsp;

Poland brought the energy early and Jakub Blaszczykowski, making his 109th and final Poland appearance, had a shot blocked by Thiaw on the counter after 13 minutes.&nbsp;

Blaszczykowski was substituted soon after, the 37-year-old receiving a standing ovation from both sets of fans, after more than a decade playing in Germany for Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg.&nbsp;

The hosts continued the celebratory mood, taking the lead midway through the first half when Kiwor shed West Ham defender Thilo Kehrer to head in a Piotr Zielinksi corner.&nbsp;

Germany upped the ante in the second half and looked to have a golden chance to equalise 10 minutes in when Jan Bednarek was ruled to have handled in the box. &nbsp;

Flick made five attacking changes in the closing minutes but Germany were unable to find the goal.&nbsp;

While Germany have qualified for next year's Euro as hosts, questions remain for a side which has failed to convert its talent and resources into on-field success since the 2014 World Cup win in Brazil.&nbsp;

Scott McTominay scored twice as Scotland claimed a famous 2-0 victory over Spain at Hampden Park in Euro 2024 qualifying on Tuesday, while Croatia won in Turkey.

Steve Clarke's Scotland won their opening match in Group A 3-0 against Cyprus on Saturday but usurped that result with a stunning performance against three-time European champions Spain.

It was their first victory over Spain since 1984 and probably their best result since beating France in 2007.

"The manager said before getting on the bus for the stadium: 'This is your chance to create a legacy as a Scotland player'," said McTominay.

"These are the sort of nights in 20-30 years you remember as a player. When you watch back the game you say I was there. It's what the game is about."

Manchester United midfielder McTominay gave the hosts a dream start by slotting home Andrew Robertson's cutback in the seventh minute.

Ryan Christie went close to a second before Joselu, who scored twice on his debut against Norway at the weekend, hit the crossbar for Spain.

Lyndon Dykes missed a golden chance to double the Scots' advantage in first-half added time, but dinked the ball over the bar after racing through on goal.

McTominay made no such mistake six minutes after the restart, though, drilling home a fine left-footed volley after excellent work from Kieran Tierney.

Spain piled on late pressure but failed to create many clear-cut chances as Scotland held on to the delight of a raucous crowd in Glasgow.

The loss is a serious early setback for new Spain coach Luis de la Fuente who took over from Luis Enrique following a World Cup last-16 exit to Morocco.

"It's clear that the two chances they had they put away and we tried, we hit the woodwork twice, we had a lot of chances, above all in the first half," Spain midfielder Rodri told Teledeporte.

"We have to improve these lapses, and these things that cost us against these teams."

Scotland are top of a difficult Group A that also includes Erling Haaland's Norway and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's Georgia.

The Georgians played out a 1-1 draw with Norway in the other Group A game in Batumi.

The Scandinavians took the lead through Alexander Sorloth, playing in place of the injured Haaland, in the 15th minute.

But Metz forward Georges Mikautadze equalised on the hour mark to ensure Georgia did not start their bid to qualify for a first major tournament with a defeat.

"It would have been worse if we had stood here and not created chances.&nbsp;We had some incredible chances today. That's life," said Norway coach Stale Solbakken.

World Cup semi-finalists Croatia eased to an impressive 2-0 win in Turkey to kickstart their Group D campaign after an opening draw with Wales.

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic netted a first-half double with both goals coming from Mario Pasalic assists.

Croatia are level on four points with Wales after Rob Page's side beat Latvia 1-0 for their first win since the retirement of Gareth Bale.

Striker Kieffer Moore headed home the winning goal for a dominant Wales in the 41st minute.

Switzerland made it two wins from two games in Group I with a comfortable 3-0 success against Israel.

Goals from Ruben Vargas, Zeki Amdouni and Silvan Widmer helped the Swiss follow up a 5-0 thrashing of Belarus in style.

Romania also boast a 100 percent record in the group after edging out Belarus 2-1, while Kosovo have two points from as many matches after a 1-1 draw with Andorra.

Right-back Benjamin Pavard pounced with half an hour remaining at a sold-out Lansdowne Road before two superb Mike Maignan saves in the final two minutes.

With 30 seconds to play in Dublin, AC Milan's Maignan, who has succeeded former captain Hugo Lloris as Les Bleus' goalkeeper, tipped over team-mate Jules Kounde's panicked header.

From the resulting corner Maignan saved the visitors' skin as he made a similar save from Nathan Collins' powerful effort.

Kalvin Phillips, surprisingly given a start despite hardly any minutes for Manchester City this season, went close with a low show as Kane screamed for a pass.

Kane's history-making moment was a touch harsh on Italy as referee Srdjan Jovanovic decided after checking a monitor that Di Lorenzo had used his arm as a cross came into the box.

Kane dispatched the penalty to put England in cruise control and Jack Grealish missed a glorious chance to make it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime.

Italy were a different proposition after the break and Retegui marked his debut with a clinical finish.
