It was the start of a new chapter at the biggest club in the world,” Kroos wrote. "After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end. I will never forget that insolent successful time! I would particularly like to thank everyone that welcomed me with an open heart and trusted me. Antoine Griezmann is also back in the squad after missing the friendlies against Germany and Chile in March due to injury. Olivier Giroud, who will leave Europe for the American Major League Soccer (MLS) side Los Angeles FC at the end of the season, has also been included.

Among the youngsters are PSG winger Bradley Barcola, 21, the only debutant called up by Deschamps, who said he had "the ability to make a difference and score goals". PSG midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery, 18, is the youngest player in the squad.

Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy was also called up, praised by Deschamps for having improved defensively, which was "not his strong point".

Despite injury problems, Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman have both been called up.

Goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who has 14 caps, will be first choice ahead of Brice Samba and Alphonse Areola following Hugo Lloris' international retirement.

France, who were knocked out by Switzerland in the last 16 of Euro 2020, last lifted the trophy in 2000. They will face Austria in their Euros group stage opening game on June 17.

Euro 2024: N'Golo Kante makes surprise return to France squad

World champion N'Golo Kante will make a surprise return to international football as France coach Didier Deschamps announced Thursday the 25 players that will make up the French squad at Euro 2024.

Kante left English side Chelsea last summer to join Saudi club Al Ittihad and has not represented France since June 2022.

"He played a full season (Kante struggled with injury during his time with Chelsea), albeit not in a European league, as he is in Saudi Arabia," said Deschamps on French TV channel TF1.

"He's back to full fitness. With his experience, I'm convinced that the French team will be stronger with N'Golo Kante."

The 2018 World Cup winner was the big surprise in Deschamps' squad but the 33-year-old's experience will doubtless be a help to youngsters Warren Zaire-Emery and Bradley Barcola, who also made the squad after fine seasons at Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Star attacker Kylian Mbappe was also included in the squad, as were Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and Arsenal defender William Saliba.

"Very happy to be on the list, it's one of the best competitions to play with France and I'm very happy and proud to represent my country," said Zaire-Emery via video link on TF1.

The 18-year-old added that he had been granted a special dispensation to sit his final school exams later in order to perform at his best at the Euro during the summer.

"I asked to be able to do it in September to be calm and focussed on football," said Zaire-Emery.

After defeat in the final at home in 2016 and a disappointing early exit in 2021, France come into Euro 2024 among the pre-tournament favourites to win a third European Championship after victory in 1984 and 2000.

France will begin their Euro campaign in Germany on June 17 against Austria, before taking on the Netherlands four days later and completing their group-stage matches against Poland on June 25.

Star World Cup winner makes shocking return as France name Euro 2024 squad

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann ignored the late claims of Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels and Julian Brandt when he named a largely unchanged squad for the 2024 Euros on Thursday.

2014 World Cup-winner Hummels and midfielder Brandt have been key figures in Dortmund's run to the Champions League final, where they will face Real Madrid, but Nagelsmann preferred to stick with the team which beat France and the Netherlands in March.&nbsp;

Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka was also left out of the hosts' 27-man squad -- it will be reduced to 26 after the June friendlies against Ukraine and Greece -- while his teammate Serge Gnabry was not considered because of injury.

Eliminated at the group stage in the past two World Cups and at the last 16 at Euro 2021, Germany had a poor 2023, winning just three of 11 games which cost then coach Hansi Flick his job.

After losses against Turkey and Austria to end 2023, Nagelsmann named a heavily changed squad for the March friendlies, including bringing in players from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen and in-form Stuttgart.&nbsp;

Germany impressed as a result with wins over 2022 World Cup finalists France and the Dutch.

Nagelsmann has now brought in Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck and Stuttgart goalkeeper Alex Nuebel for Heidenheim's Jan-Niklas Beste and injured Fulham 'keeper Bernd Leno.

Bayern's Leroy Sane, who missed the March friendlies through injury, has also been added to the squad. &nbsp;

The announcement, made in downtown Berlin near the famous Brandenberg Gate, included three members of Germany's 2014 World Cup winners from Brazil: goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, forward Thomas Mueller and midfielder Toni Kroos.&nbsp;

Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will remain captain despite Neuer's return, which Nagelsmann had already confirmed prior to the announcement.

The German FA had already announced 18 of the squad on a one-by-one basis via social media and other sources, reducing the speculation over the final make-up.

The Euros start on June 14, with Germany facing Scotland in Munich.&nbsp;

Germany go into a pre-Euros training camp in the central village of Blankenhai -- where England will be based during the tournament -- from May 26 until June 1.&nbsp;

Four members of the squad: Dortmund's Schlotterbeck and Niclas Fuellkrug, along with Real Madrid duo Antonio Ruediger and Toni Kroos, play the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1 and will not take part.&nbsp;

Nagelsmann confirmed the four will join the squad two days after the Champions League final.

Germany will play two pre-tournament friendlies, facing Ukraine on June 3 in Nuremberg and Greece four days later in Moenchengladbach.&nbsp;

Defenders: Waldemar Anton (Stuttgart), Benjamin Henrichs (RB Leipzig), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt), Maximilian Mittelstaedt (Stuttgart), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid/ESP), Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)

Euro 2024: Dortmund duo Mats Hummels, Julian Brandt dropped from Germany's 27-man squad; opt for 4 goalkeepers

Captains will be the only ones allowed to speak to the referee and discuss a decision during matches at the upcoming European Championship in a bid to facilitate clearer communication, UEFA's managing director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti said.

If any other player is found to approach the referee showing any sign of disrespect or dissent they will be shown a yellow card, Rosetti said. "Being a referee in the modern game is very difficult," Rosetti said in an open letter on Tuesday.

"The official in the middle takes between 200 to 250 decisions per match - that is one every 22 seconds - in difficult and sometimes controversial situations, under huge pressure, with each of them scrutinised and re-watched from multiple different angles by fans and pundits alike."

"They (referees) receive a lot of information from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), and we are ready to speak and share more details with the players and coaches to help them understand how a decision was taken."

Rosetti said coaches and players have welcomed the new approach. "Explaining a decision with up to 22 players mobbing you is impossible for a referee. It can lead to a breakdown in communication, with the beautiful game turning very ugly very quickly," he added.

We ask the captains to ensure their team mates do not encroach upon and surround the referee, allowing direct conversations to take place in order that the decision be relayed in a timely and respectful manner."

"Importantly, we want only the captain from the team who wishes to discuss a decision to be able to approach the referee."

If the captain is a goalkeeper, Rosetti said an outfield player will be nominated to communicate with the referee. The quadrennial tournament will be held in Germany from June 14-July 14.

Only captains will be allowed to speak to referees at Euro 2024

Keeping fans and players safe will be a mammoth task for Germany as it hosts Euro 2024 this summer in a tense global climate with major conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

From hooligans to potential terrorist attacks and even cyberattacks, the European Championship organisers will be looking to ward off a range of threats.

Security forces will be charged with protecting some 2.7 million fans, 24 team base camps spread across the country and ten stadiums where 51 matches will be played between June 14 and July 14.

Designated fan zones are also expected to attract around 12 million visitors.

"From the outset, security has been our top priority," tournament director Philipp Lahm told AFP.

In an unprecedented move, Germany has invited some 300 security experts from all nations playing in the tournament to take part in a monitoring project at the International Police Cooperation Centre (IPCC) in the western city of Neuss.

Alongside officials from Germany, Europol and European football body UEFA, they will take turns to monitor the situation on the ground, gathering during the tournament in a huge 500-square-metre (5,382-square-foot) conference room equipped with 129 computers and a 40-square-metre screen, AFP saw on a visit to the facility.

<h2>- No leave for police -</h2>

"Each country knows its troublemakers better than any other, and the foreign experts present in Neuss will be able to identify them more quickly," Oliver Strudthoff, director of the IPCC, told AFP.

"The size of the delegations will depend on the number of fans and how potentially dangerous they are. England, for example, will have many more representatives than Switzerland," he said.

At the matches themselves, all hands will be on deck -- police have been forbidden from taking leave during the tournament.

Germany will also introduce security controls on all of its nine borders.

"On trains and in stations, the federal police will be visibly stepping up their presence," said a spokesman for the German interior ministry. The same applies to airports.

French gendarmes will support the German police by taking part in joint rail patrols on routes to and from France and at matches involving the French team.

The British government has said that more than 1,600 English and Welsh supporters who are hit with stadium bans because of previous violent behaviour, will be banned from travelling to Germany during the tournament.

<h3>- Triple perimeters -</h3>

On top of the standard measures, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has said the Ukrainian national team will be subject to enhanced security.

Between 800 and 1,300 police will be deployed around the stadiums at each match, depending on the teams playing.

In a bid to prevent anyone from entering a match with weapons or explosives, three security perimeters will be set up around each stadium.

Cars will be checked at the first barrier, while fans will have their bags searched at the second, before scanning their tickets at the third.

The fan zones will also present a security challenge, especially the largest one at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate which is set to welcome tens of thousands of visitors for every match.

These "soft targets" are more vulnerable because "it's easier for perpetrators to infiltrate (them) and take action", said Johannes Saal, a security expert at the University of Lucerne.

The German army will also monitor the sky from the National Air Security Center, located some 70 kilometres (44 miles) from the IPCC.

The use of drones will be closely monitored, with flight restriction zones.

"Major sporting events are always potential targets for terrorist attacks," said Saal, describing the security situation as "very tense" in the context of the war in Gaza and the ever-present threat of Islamist extremism.

Guardiola finally guided City to their first Champions League crown last season after a number of near misses earlier in his reign.

The Spaniard feels Gareth Southgate can do the same with England following their own painful failures on the brink of silverware.

England were beaten in the European Championship final by Italy on penalties at Wembley in 2021, lost the World Cup semi-final against Croatia in 2018 and were beaten by France in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.

"They are really good. It's not just the talent of the strikers, it's the whole package, the whole group and Gareth knows perfectly what he has to do," Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

"So, I have the feeling, everyone has the feeling, that the England national team, (from) the last events - the World Cup and European Championship - they make steps, they are on the verge, they are really close. They lost a final, got to a semi-final.

"When you arrive at these stages every two years, it's going to happen. It's quite similar to us, we were close, and in the end we lifted it."

Guardiola believes the English passion for football, which has often weighed heavily on their players at tournaments, will prove a more uplifting factor this time.

"I see the reaction when they play European Cups or World Cups, people go crazy on the streets. They go crazy for the national team," Guardiola said.

"That proves how proud they are and, at the end of the day, as a football player, that is the best, your country is proud of what you are doing for your country, and the way you are playing, reaching the last stages.

"Just believe it. If they believe it, they can do it. Believe it, believe it, they can do it."

City forward Phil Foden could have a key role to play for England after an outstanding season at club level.

The 23-year-old's performances were recognised as he was named the Football Writers' Association men's Player of the Year on Friday.

Guardiola believes Foden, who has progressed through the club's youth ranks to become one of their most important players, could go on to become one of City's greatest ever.

"This club has a long, long history. You can't forget what happened with the players who played at Maine Road, like everyone knows. I think the club has been built with many, many top-quality players," he said.

"But I have the feeling if he continues his career until the end here, and continues that level, he can be one of the best, that's for sure."

He subsequently has also been facing probe regarding financial irregularities during his time in chare which saw Spanish Super Cup being transferred to Saudi Arabia in 2020.

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has said that he will consider his future at the club but not before Euro 2024, to be held in Germany. The Portugal star and United captain has insisted that he is fully focused on the English club's FA Cup final, where they take on Manchester City on May 25 and then on the Euros.&nbsp;Amid speculation of him parting ways with United, when asked about his future, the 29-year-old Fernandes told Dazn Portugal, "I don't have thoughts for other things at the moment. It doesn't just depend on me."&nbsp;

Fernandes said, "So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it won't be until after the Euros."

"We can end the season by winning the FA Cup, then we have the European Championship, which is very important for us," the United captain further opined.

Fernandes -- who has won just one trophy (i.e. the the Carabao Cup last season) since being part of United in 2020 -- further added, "Nothing will take my focus away from this end of the championship, the FA Cup and the European Championship. There is nothing more important than that at the moment."

The star midfielder further revealed that he feels wanted at the Old Trafford club. In this regard, he added, "A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there's that on both sides."

"I'm not thinking too much about the future, not least because, obviously, this season hasn't been at the level I'd hoped for, either individually or collectively, so far," he concluded.

Fernandes-led United, who couldn't even ensure a top-four finish in the Premier League, will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at the Wembley Stadium, London later this month. After this, the 29-year-old will join the Portugal squad for the forthcoming Euros.

Julian Nagelsmann ends speculations of Bayern Munich return, extends contract with German national team

Bayern Munich’s reign as Bundesliga champions officially came to an end on Sunday (April 14) after Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-0 win over Werder Bremen. The German giants who enjoyed 11 years as the league champions are seeking to find a replacement for outgoing manager Thomas Tuchel. And one name high on the list is former coach Julian Nagelsmann, who is currently managing Germany's national team. According to reports, Bayern are in advance talks with the German gaffer and will soon make an audacious move for him.

<h2>Bayern Munich hunt for Nagelsmann</h2>

As per reports by Sky Germany on Tuesday (April 16), Bayern have had initial talks with Nagelsmann’s representatives. The German boss, who will manage the national side at the Euro 2024 at home will be the favourite to land the job having previously been in charge of the side between 2021 to 2023. While Xabi Alonso was the desired target for the Bavarians, that possibility was put to an end last week when he confirmed his desire to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

Having earlier announced the departure of Thomas Tuchel in February, Nagelsmann along with Jurgen Klopp and Xabi Alonso were in the race. However, with Klopp not interested in the job and Alonso happy to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, Nagelsmann was the key contender.

As things stand, nothing is official as Nagelsmann’s current job is to help Germany win the Euro 2024. Germany haven’t won the Euro since 1996 when they beat the Czech Republic in the final and have been without silverware on the international stage since 2017 when they won the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Zidane comes with a proven track record of winning the Champions League and La Liga during his time at Real Madrid. Zidane is a free agent and has not taken a job since 2021 when he left Real Madrid during his second spell.

Hansi Flick is another option on the table who has been a free agent and is a popular name at the club. Flick won the 2020 Champions League including the DFB Pokal and Bundesliga title at the club.

Germany kit controversy, Nazi symbolism: Adidas is all set to redesign the German national football side’s kit containing the number ‘4’ to avoid Nazi symbolism. In a statement released by the DFB (German Football Association), it confirmed the slight change as the No. '44' resembled the symbol used by Nazi 'SS' units. The new kit already made its debut during the recent friendly against France and is all set to be donned by the stars of the national side during the upcoming Euro 2024.

DFB confirms kit design change

"The DFB checks the numbers 0-9 and then submits the numbers 1-26 to UEFA for review. None of the parties involved saw any proximity to Nazi symbolism in the creation process of the jersey design," the DFB said in a statement on X.

"Nevertheless, we take the comments very seriously and do not want to provide a platform for discussions. We will develop an alternative design for the number 4 and coordinate it with UEFA."

After the kit’s debut in the France friendly, it was pointed out that kit No. 44 symbolises Nazi 'SS' units due to the pattern of ‘4’ used in it. The stylised SS symbol is banned in Germany today as it indicated police units, combat forces, and others who ran the concentration camps that carried out the mass killings of civilians during World War II.

The kits with number No. 44 were immediately called back to avoid any further controversy with Germany being the host of the Euro 2024. Adidas had earlier claimed that it would remove the number 44 from its range of customisation options. They also claimed that DFB and 11teamsports were responsible for the design of the names and numbers on the shirts.

Germany’s national football kit has been in the headlines for more than one reason recently. Apart from the Nazi symbolism controversy, DFB recently decided to end its decades-long partnership with Adidas and will instead use kits provided by Nike from 2027 with the partnership running until 2034.

It is the first senior call-up for Burnley's Trafford, while Manchester City's Lewis made his debut against North Macedonia in November. Man City's Walker and Man United's Maguire are the latest absences for England following injuries to captain Harry Kane and Arsenal forward Buyako Saka.

A serial winner with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, Kroos returns to the side at 34 and will be an important member of the squad when Germany hosts the Euros in June and July. The German star’s experience will be a key addition to the side as the national team has struggled to lay a marker in recent tournaments. Euro 2024: UEFA announces 21 base camps including hosts Germany, England

Reigning champions Italy were placed in the same group as Spain in Saturday's draw for Euro 2024, while France will come up against the Netherlands and England avoided any of the toughest opponents.

Gareth Southgate's much-fancied England side will meet Slovenia, Denmark and Serbia, with hosts Germany taking on Scotland in the tournament's opening game on June 14 in Munich.

Italy, who beat England on penalties at Wembley in the final of the last European Championship in 2021, and Spain will also face Croatia and Albania in Group B.

Spain, victors over Italy in the final of Euro 2012, will take on 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia in their opening match in Berlin on June 15.

Italy were always likely to face a difficult draw after being placed in the bottom pot based on their results in qualifying, when they scraped through with a 0-0 stalemate against Ukraine in their final match.

"When you're in the fourth pot you know that you have a lot of teams ahead of you, but you can't forget that you represent Italy and you have to play every match with pride," coach Luciano Spalletti told broadcaster RAI.

The meeting of France, the 2022 World Cup runners-up, and the Netherlands will be the other heavyweight tie of the opening phase.

They were in the same section in qualifying, with France winning both encounters. The two nations are in Group D along with Austria and a play-off winner, which will be one of Poland, Wales, Finland or Estonia.

<h2>'Ready for the expectation'</h2>

England, in contrast, will have few complaints about their opponents in Group C, although a Denmark side ranked 19th in the world were arguably the team to avoid from the second pot of seeds.

Southgate's team, considered the favourites along with France for the tournament, will take on Serbia in their opening game in Gelsenkirchen on June 16.

"I've stood here after quite a few draws and you always feel the same way, you can look at it on paper but the games aren't played on paper," Southgate told the BBC.

"One or two teams that you are obviously glad to avoid, especially in pot three, pot four, but all the teams we play are more than capable."

He added: "We've developed a lot as a team over the past few years, we're used to these big games, we're ready for the expectation and we hope we can give our supporters some more brilliant nights as I think we have in the last few tournaments."

If England top their group, and France also finish first in their section, the two sides would find themselves on the same side of the draw in the knockout phase and would be on course to meet in the semi-finals.

Scotland, who famously lost to Brazil in the opening match of the 1998 World Cup, will again have the honour of featuring in the tournament's curtain-raiser when they meet Germany to start in Group A.

Hungary and Switzerland complete that section, which could be one of the most evenly-matched.

"It'll be nice to open the tournament, be involved in that first game, and hopefully we can set the tournament off with a good match," Scotland manager Steve Clarke told the BBC.

<h2>Germany face Scotland in opener</h2>

Germany have been European champions three times, a record shared with Spain, but there are big doubts about their form heading into the tournament.

"It will be a very nice start against Scotland in Munich. The other games will also be exciting duels. It's not a group of death, but a very good one," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Euro 2016 winners Portugal were drawn in Group F with Turkey, the Czech Republic and a play-off winner from either Greece, Georgia, Luxembourg or Kazakhstan.

Belgium are in Group E alongside Slovakia, Romania and the winner of the other play-off path, which will be Israel, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina or Ukraine.

The month-long Euro, played in 10 cities across Germany, will conclude with the final in Berlin on July 14.

The top two teams in each group will qualify for the last 16, along with the four best third-placed sides.

Earlier on Saturday, European football's governing body UEFA announced that the total prize pot for competing nations will be 331 million euros ($360m).

Each team gets 9.25 million euros as a starting amount and will earn up to a maximum of 28.25 million euros for the winner, if they win all their group games.

'Ready for the expectation' England, in contrast, will have few complaints about their opponents in Group C, although a Denmark side ranked 19th in the world were arguably the team to avoid from the second pot of seeds. "One or two teams that you are obviously glad to avoid, especially in pot three, pot four, but all the teams we play are more than capable." He added: "We've developed a lot as a team over the past few years, we're used to these big games, we're ready for the expectation and we hope we can give our supporters some more brilliant nights as I think we have in the last few tournaments." If England top their group, and France also finish first in their section, the two sides would find themselves on the same side of the draw in the knockout phase and would be on course to meet in the semi-finals. Germany face Scotland in opener Germany have been European champions three times, a record shared with Spain, but there are big doubts about their form heading into the tournament. Italy vs Spain in Euro 2024 group stage, England handed comfort draw

Hungary and Slovakia booked their tickets for Euro 2024 on Thursday while 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal scored again for already-qualified Spain. The Hungarians guaranteed their place at the finals in Germany when an own goal from Bulgaria's Alex Petkov deep in stoppage time gave them a 2-2 draw in Sofia.

The visitors only needed a point to qualify but were 2-1 down before Petkov allowed a cross to skid off the top of his head and into his own net in the 97th minute in the most dramatic of finishes.

The Hungarian players exploded in joy at the end of a match played in an empty stadium because of fears of protests against the head of the Bulgarian football federation. Instead, Bulgarian fans mounted protests outside the ground.

Ten supporters and five police officers were injured in clashes and police also used water cannon to disperse crowds of fans angry at the lack of their national team's progress. The draw gave Hungary 15 points from seven games in Group G of European qualifying, two ahead of Serbia.

<h2>Haraslin double&nbsp;</h2>

In Bratislava, Slovakia cruised past Iceland 4-2, with two goals from Lukas Haraslin helping them qualify for the finals for the third time in a row. Hungary and Slovakia join host nation Germany, Austria, Belgium, England, France, Portugal, Scotland, Spain and Turkey as the teams qualified so far.

In other&nbsp;games, Spain, who have also already secured their qualification, comfortably beat Cyprus 3-1 with starlet Yamal opening the scoring in the fifth minute. Yamal had become Spain's youngest player and scorer in a 7-1 qualifying win against Georgia in September and on Thursday he rounded the goalkeeper and scored with a powerful finish.

Already-qualified Scotland came from behind to draw 2-2 with Georgia in Tbilisi thanks to Lawrence Shankland's 93rd minute equaliser. Serbia have to wait to qualify from Group G as Montenegro beat Lithuania 2-0 to keep their hopes alive.

Portugal opened up an eight-point lead over Slovakia in Group J by beating Liechtenstein 2-0 in Vaduz with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo -- his 128th international strike to extend his world record -- and Joao Cancelo. Ronaldo's chance was created by Diogo Jota's beautifully weighted pass through the defence, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner firing the ball into the roof of the net.

Luxembourg thrashed Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and will enter the playoffs in a bid for qualification after a campaign that has defied expectations. Azerbaijan eased past a woeful Sweden 3-0 in Baku in Group F, from which Austria and Belgium have already qualified. Austria beat bottom team Estonia 2-0.

Hungary, Slovakia book Euro 2024 berths; Lamine Yamal scores again for already-qualified Spain

At least 33 police officers and 24 football fans were injured in clashes outside the stadium where Bulgaria were playing a Euro 2024 qualifier against Hungary, authorities said Friday. UEFA had ordered Thursday's game in Sofia to be played behind closed doors after a request by the national federation, which feared trouble following a supporters' call for a major protest against the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) and its long-time president Borislav Mihaylov.

But around 4,000 supporters gathered outside the national stadium and some involved in the demonstrations suffered broken limbs in the clashes. "Twenty-four injured were examined, including seven who were hospitalised with head traumas, broken legs and arms and many who were gassed with pepper spray," Katya Sungarska, a spokeswoman for the national emergency centre, told AFP Friday.

"The injured police are 33, there are some with serious injuries and hospitalised," Stefan Ivanov, deputy chief of the Sofia police directorate, said at a briefing. Thirty-three football fans were detained last night and arrests were still being made, he said, slamming the violence as "an unprecedented violation of public order with serious aggression and posing high risk".

Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said he would consult UEFA about their assessment of the organisation of the event and the decision to shut the stadium to fans. "Yesterday we witnessed ugly scenes of violence. Their main cause is the long-standing management of the Bulgarian Football Union which led to a decline of Bulgarian football, without any prospects for development," Denkov told journalists.

But he refrained from directly calling for Mihaylov's resignation. Several politicians have already demanded the 60-year-old former goalkeeper for the national team to quit immediately but the BFU has not commented. The prime minister sacked the deputy minister of the interior after he allowed fans from rival clubs to gather in one location.

<h2>Fans' anger</h2>

Police said supporters from Sofia's arch rivals CSKA and Levski as well as fans from Plovdiv and Varna has gathered outside the stadium on Thursday. They shouted "Resign!" and held banners "18 years is enough" to call for Mihaylov to stand down, accusing him of corruption and leading Bulgarian football into an unprecedented decline.

Violent clashes erupted after groups of masked fans started to throw smoke bombs, pavement blocks, stones and beer bottles at police lines.&nbsp;Over 1,500 policemen in full anti-riot gear were in place to ensure security.

Two water cannons were deployed to disperse the crowd -- a measure used relatively rarely in the Balkan country. An AFP reporter saw at least seven fans with head injuries after police pushed away the supporters, who set fire to a police van and several garbage containers.

Fans' anger has built up in recent years over the poor results of the national team that has failed to qualify for any major tournaments and went through numerous coaches during Mihaylov's time at the helm of the federation.

The controversial president quit in 2019 but then withdraw his resignation and was re-elected in 2021, despite a record marred by suspicions of match-fixing and a racist abuse scandal during a match against England in 2019. Hungary qualified for the finals as a result of the 2-2 draw on Thursday. Despite the point Bulgaria achieved, they are last in their Euro 2024 qualifying group, with three points from seven games.

Euro 2024: Governing body UEFA reschedules Kosovo-Israel qualifier over Gaza conflict

Stephen Kenny's three-year reign as Republic of Ireland manager is over after football association bosses said that his contract would not be renewed. The 52-year-old's departure was widely expected having failed to guide the team to Euro 2024 in Germany, winning only two of their eight games in qualifying Group B.

Kenny's final game was a 1-1 draw with New Zealand in a friendly in Dublin on Tuesday. He won only six of his 29 competitive matches. The Football Association of Ireland said that they had been in a hard group containing France and the Netherlands, but the target had been qualification.

FAI chief executive Jonathan Hill thanked Kenny, who replaced Mick McCarthy in 2020, for working "tirelessly to create the right environment to support the development of our senior men's team".

"Stephen has also overseen an important period of transition for our senior men's national team and has given debuts to a significant number of new and younger players."

"This will serve as a solid platform for whoever now takes this group of players forward." The FAI said that the search for Kenny's successor had already begun, ahead of friendly matches in March and June next year.

Speaking after the draw with New Zealand, Kenny admitted that&nbsp;he did not expect to continue as Ireland manager. "Of course it would be a dream to carry on and manage the team, of course it would, but my instinct is that's not going to happen," he said.

Euro 2024 Play-Off Draws: Rob Pages' Wales host Finland in semifinal tie, likely to face Poland in final

Italy qualified for Euro 2024 after drawing 0-0 against Ukraine in their final Group C qualifier on Monday although the Ukrainians can still secure a spot through the playoffs. European champions Italy finished second, level on 14 points with third-placed Ukraine but with a better head-to-head record after a tense affair that could have gone either way.

The Italians ended six points behind England, who had sealed qualification after beating Italy 3-1 at Wembley in October. Ukraine, who have never beaten Italy, had strong claims for a penalty after Bryan Cristante's clumsy challenge on Mykhailo Mudryk in stoppage time but nothing was given.

They can still book a spot at a fourth consecutive European Championship via the playoffs in March. The playoff draw will take place on Thursday in Nyon. "Ukraine showed that they are an equipped team and they gave us a hard time," Italy coach Luciano Spalletti told Rai Sport. "Today we played a good match because in the first half we had many opportunities to secure the result. Then when we didn't manage to do so the match became dirtier and more physical. "They brought in more physical players but at that moment they no longer played football."

LIVELY START

The match got off to a lively start but both goalkeepers - Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Ukraine's Anatoliy Trubin - held firm in an entertaining clash at BayArena in Leverkusen. Italy, who will make their eighth consecutive appearance at the Euros, had most possession and created more chances but Ukraine remained composed as they looked to counter-attack.

Italy's Federico Chiesa had a chance to break the deadlock in the seventh minute but his effort from inside the box flew narrowly over the bar before Donnarumma denied Ukraine an opener seven minutes later by keeping out Georgiy Sudakov's low shot.

Defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo then nearly nodded home for Italy from a corner just before the half-hour mark before Trubin pulled off a stunning save to deny Davide Frattesi.

Italy continued to dominate after the break but Ukraine's probing increased and Mudryk came close in the 66th minute only to be denied by Donnarumma who pulled off another fine save. "We are very happy," Donnarumma said. "We are where we deserve to be with all the difficulties we had, but thanks to the new coach and staff we are back."

"They brought in more physical players but at that moment they no longer played football." LIVELY START The match got off to a lively start but both goalkeepers - Italy's Gianluigi Donnarumma and Ukraine's Anatoliy Trubin - held firm in an entertaining clash at BayArena in Leverkusen. Italy qualify for Euro 2024 after tense 0-0 draw with Ukraine

Spanish football club Barcelona have confirmed that their star player Gavi suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear and will undergo surgery, which rules him out of competitive football for at least seven to nine months.&nbsp;

Gavi suffered the injury during his national team's Euro qualifier match against Georgia on Sunday (Nov 19). The teenager was forced off the field in tears and it quickly became evident that he had suffered some serious damage.&nbsp;

“Tests carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus," Barcelona said in a statement.

"The player will have surgery in the coming days after which a new medical update will be released.”

The injury means that Gavi will miss the rest of the La Liga season as well as the Champions League campaign for the Catalan side. As for the national team, it looks highly unlikely that he will be available for Euro 2024, scheduled to take place in Germany in June&nbsp;2024.&nbsp;

<h2>Massive blow for Spain and Barcelona</h2>

The injury is a massive blow as Gavi, despite being a teenager, had become a central part of both Barcelona and Spain. Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has described the boy wonder as the “heart and soul” due to his tenacity and desire for the game.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, however, has come under heavy scrutiny from the fans for playing Gavi in a dead-rubber where most of the starters had been given a rest.&nbsp;

Speaking after the match, De la Fuente said the dressing room wore the look of a funeral.&nbsp;

“The dressing room is like a funeral parlour. It was an accident, it could have happened to anyone," said De la Fuente who revealed that it was a few minutes after Luka Lochoshvili's challenge that Gavi suffered the injury, attempting to control the ball midway through the first half.&nbsp;

The injury has reopened the debate about players being forced to play an excessive number of games at the elite level. Still only 19, Gavi has already played over 100 times for Barcelona and has made 27 appearances for Spain.

The likes of Gavi and other top footballers are forced to play over 60 games a season if their club team goes the distance in all tournaments. With international games, the tally goes upward of 70, meaning the players have less and less recovery time between the matches.&nbsp;

Lukaku fired home shortly afterwards and then headed in Wout Faes' delivery to complete a hat-trick.

He rounded off his scoring spree of four goals in 20 minutes before being replaced by Lois Openda at half-time.

Goals from Robin Le Normand and Ferran Torres and a Luka Lochoshvili own goal helped Spain past a spirited Georgia, who drew level at 1-1 early on through Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Euro 2024 Qualifiers: Portugal finish unbeaten, Serbia and Belgium qualify too

Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in France's record-breaking 14-0 thrashing of 10-man Gibraltar as the Netherlands, Switzerland and Romania booked their places at Euro 2024 on Saturday.

Les Bleus set a new record margin of victory in European qualifying and a national record in Nice.

Ethan Santos' own goal and Marcus Thuram had already opened the floodgates before 17-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery scored.

That was Zaire-Emery's last contribution as the PSG midfielder was forced off with an ankle injury but a red card for Santos after just 18 minutes allowed the World Cup finalists to run amok.

Mbappe's penalty made it 4-0 and Jonathan Clauss, Kingsley Coman and Youssouf Fofana all scored before half-time.

Adrien Rabiot, Coman again and Ousmane Dembele kept the score ticking over before Mbappe struck twice to seal his hat-trick in style.

The France captain lobbed Dayle Coleing from just inside the Gibraltar half to register his 300th career goal aged just 24.

Olivier Giroud then came off the bench to grab the final two goals and ensure the history books were re-written.

But the scoreline will raise fresh questions over the need for such clashes between giants and minnows in a congested fixture calendar.

"We did everything to make this score happen. That is the ambition that there is in this team," said France boss Didier Deschamps.

Just one goal was enough to ensure the Dutch joined France in qualifying from Group B with a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland.

Wout Weghorst's powerful drive separated the sides in Amsterdam in what is likely to be Irish boss Stephen Kenny's final competitive game in charge.

"In the end, it's about winning the game. We knew we needed the three points to qualify directly today, at home with our own fans," said Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo.

"We created a lot of chances, opportunities, but we have to score more goals and have more finesse in the final third."

<h2>Romania, Switzerland qualify</h2>

Romania reached just a second major tournament since 2008 by ending Israel's chances of automatic qualification with a 2-1 win.

Despite being forced to play what should have been a home fixture in Hungary due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Israel went in front after just two minutes through Eran Zahavi.

But Romania hit back quickly to level through George Puscas and secured their place in Germany thanks to Ianis Hagi, son of Gheorghe Hagi who inspired the Romanians famous run to the 1994 World Cup quarter-finals.

Switzerland also qualified despite being held 1-1 at home by Kosovo.

Romania are now in pole position to win Group I with a draw at home to the Swiss on Tuesday enough to secure top spot.

Wales' hopes of reaching a third consecutive European Championship were dealt a huge blow by a 1-1 draw away to Armenia.

Rob Page's men began the day with automatic qualification in their own hands.

But Wales fell behind early on to Lucas Zelarayan's strike from outside the box in Yerevan.

Nair Tiknizyan's own goal brought the visitors level before half-time, but Wales failed to find a winner that leaves them needing Croatia to slip up.

The 2022 World Cup semi-finalists moved into second place in Group D thanks to a 2-0 win in Latvia as Lovro Majer and Andrej Kramaric struck inside the first 16 minutes.

Wales must beat already-qualified Turkey in Cardiff on Tuesday and hope Croatia fail to beat Armenia at home.

France qualify for Euro 2024 with record 14-0 thrashing of 10-man Gibraltar

Denmark midfielder Thomas Delaney's second-half goal ensured his side's qualification for Euro 2024 as they secured a 2-1 home win over Slovenia on Friday that ensures top spot in Group H.

The Danes have 22 points from nine games, three ahead of Slovenia who cannot overtake them even if they beat third-placed Kazakhstan, who have 18 points, in their final game on Monday due to their inferior head-to-head record.

Denmark dominated throughout and almost opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Jonas Wind got a towering header on target but Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak made the first of a string of fine saves to deny him.

Wing back Joakim Maehle, who had an early effort ruled out for offside, broke the deadlock in the 26th minute as he ghosted in at the far post to score with a superb half-volley from Victor Kristiansen's cross.

That jolted the visitors into life and they quickly levelled as fullback Erik Janza beat keeper Kasper Schmeichel with a tremendous free kick from the edge of the box on the half hour.

Denmark striker Yussuf Poulsen wasted a couple of decent chances early in the second half but that merely set the scene for Delaney, whose World Cup last year was ended due by a knee injury, to become the hero.

With the Slovenians struggling to deal with Denmark's height and power at set pieces, Jannick Vestergaard's clever headed flick found Delaney on the edge of the six-yard box and he rifled the ball home to send the Copenhagen crowd into ecstasy.

Slovenia's goal proved to be their only effort on target in the game and the Danes, European champions in 1992, continued to dominate possession as they held on comfortably to win the game and book their spot at a 10th Euro finals.

The Danes, who crashed out of last year's World Cup at the group stage, celebrated by donning red t-shirts with the words "See you in Germany Euro 2024" while spraying the contents of gigantic bottles of beer.

"It's damn big, we've dreamed about this since qualification started and I think we played a very good game," a jubilant Maehle told broadcaster TV2.

"Redemption, this is redemption," midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg told TV2. "Now we're going to the Euros in the summer and we can create something really special there."

Delaney books Denmark's Euro 2024 berth in 2-1 win over Slovenia

Federico Chiesa scored twice as Italy secured a 5-2 home victory against North Macedonia in their Euro 2024 qualifying clash on Friday, giving them an edge ahead of a deciding encounter with Ukraine on Monday for a place at the finals.

The Group C victory means Italy only need a draw against Ukraine to secure second place in the group along with already-qualified England and reach next year’s finals in Germany.

Italy have encountered difficulties in their history with North Macedonia, suffering a 1-0 loss at home in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and later playing a 1-1 Euro qualifying draw in manager Luciano Spalletti's debut as Azzurri coach in September.

"With our quality, sooner or later we do score goals, but there was this danger of counter-attacks that we were never troubled by in the first half but were a couple of times after the break," Spalletti told RAI Sport.

Giacomo Raspadori had a goal disallowed for offside, followed by Chiesa's attempt from a tight angle that was saved by North Macedonia's Stole Dimitrievski.

Italy broke the deadlock after 17 minutes when an unmarked Matteo Darmian headed in a corner at the back post.

After 40 minutes, Italy had a chance to extend their advantage from the penalty spot after Nikola Serafimov's handball but Jorginho's attempt was saved by Dimitrievski.

Chiesa did double the lead four minutes before the break though with a curling shot from the edge of the box.

In first-half stoppage time Italy got a third when Chiesa received a through ball inside the box, eluded a defender and scored with a deflected shot that looped into the top corner.

North Macedonia got back into the match after 52 minutes when Jani Atanasov nodded in a close-range cross before scoring his second with a deflected long-range shot in the 74th.

"The second goal was a big deflection, it was casual, so that changes the psychological aspects of the match," Spalletti said.

"At that point, I think we saw the best of Italy in terms of character and quality as we showed strength to keep going and secure the victory with another two goals."

Spalletti was asked if he planned to make changes for the Ukraine game in Leverkusen, Germany.

"As for the next match, we have to see how everyone is doing, but I do not predict that many changes," he said.

"At that point, I think we saw the best of Italy in terms of character and quality as we showed strength to keep going and secure the victory with another two goals." Italy's Raspadori dashed the visitors' hopes nine minutes from time with a goal from a tricky angle inside the box, while Stephan El Shaarawy added Italy's fifth in stoppage time. Italy overcome North Macedonia, eye Euro 2024 spot in Ukraine showdown

German sports goods manufacturing giant Adidas has unveiled a high-tech football that will be used in next year's European Championship and help officials with more accurate offside decisions.

German sports goods manufacturing giant Adidas has unveiled a high-tech football that will be used in next year's European Championship and help officials with more accurate offside decisions. Alongside the European football governing body UEFA, Adidas launched the football, named “Fussballliebe,” the German word for “love of football,” in Berlin on Wednesday (Nov 15). How does the technology inside the ball work? The ball features the Adidas 'connected ball technology' for the first time at a UEFA Euro. The ball has a chip fixed on the gyroscope inside which sends data 500 times per second to record the point at which it is kicked. The kick point is essential in an offside call and the technology in the ball helps officials make the decision using multiple camera angles to create 3D visualisations that illustrate player movement. Adidas claims that the tech significantly reduces the time taken for a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) offside decision. It will now take just 25 seconds to make a call since there will be no need to manually draw lines. UEFA added that the outer shell of the ball is supported within it by the CTR-CORE which is designed for accuracy and consistency whilst retaining maximum shape. "We are, as always, confident that Adidas' Fussballliebe will mark another stride in our shared dedication to excellence," said Zvonimir Boban, UEFA technical director and chief of football during the unveiling. Notably, the 'connected ball technology' was also used at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last year when the official match ball, named Al Rihla, incorporated the same. While the ball will help in reducing errors from the game, its environmental impact during the manufacturing process will also be limited. According to Adidas, the ball is made with at least 20 per cent recycled content to avoid the larger environmental impact of producing virgin content. Adidas has also pledged one per cent of net sales of the ball to the Common Goal soccer charity created by former Spain midfielder Juan Mata. David Beckham says England's young stars have a "real opportunity" to end the nation's decades-long wait for a major trophy at next year's Euro 2024 tournament in Germany.

The former England captain won multiple medals in a glittering club career but failed to lift silverware at international level despite playing in talent-packed sides.

Gareth Southgate's team, fourth in the FIFA rankings, have a good recent record at major tournaments but England have not tasted glory since winning the 1966 World Cup on home soil.

They reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and agonisingly lost to Italy on penalties in the European Championship final at Wembley three years later.

Southgate's men, who lost to France in the last eight at last year's World Cup in Qatar, have already qualified for the Euro 2024 finals with two matches to go, against Malta and North Macedonia.

The side boast an impressive array of attacking talent including Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, 20, and Harry Kane, who is enjoying a prolific season at Bayern Munich.

"I really believe in this England team," Beckham, 48, told AFP on Wednesday. "I believe in Gareth Southgate and what he's doing and what he's done for a number of years now.

Gareth Southgate said the door was still "100 percent" open for Raheem Sterling after leaving the Chelsea forward out of England's squad for their final Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Southgate, whose side are already assured of their place in the tournament in Germany next year, named a 25-man group on Thursday for a home match against Malta on November 17 and a trip to North Macedonia three days later.

Sterling, who has 82 caps and 20 goals for England, has not played for the national team since last year's World Cup in Qatar, where England reached the quarter-finals.

"The door is 100 percent open not only for Raheem but for other players," said Southgate. "There's no doubt about that.

"We don't need to know about his quality, his personality. He is a crucial part of why we've had the journey we've had over the last few years."

The England boss said it was tough to leave in-form players out to accommodate Sterling, 28, who has scored four goals for Chelsea this season.

"He wasn't available in March or June and the team started on a good run," he said. "We won in Italy for the first time in 60 years, the two performances in June were excellent, so we stuck with that group," he added.

"There is no question Raheem is looking dangerous for his club, he looks invigorated since the start of the season. (But) that is an area of the pitch where we've probably got as much competition for places as anywhere."

Manchester City defender John Stones and Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah are both out injured.

Chelsea captain James is fit again after a hamstring injury, but asked to be left out of the squad after it had been expected he would replace Stones.

Southgate said: "I was hoping to call up Reece James, but he doesn't feel he is quite ready and I understand that.

"He's had a long path back from a number of injuries and he's cautious in that respect. I can understand why."

Southgate paid tribute to Bobby Charlton, who died last month and will be honoured in England's match against Malta at Wembley.

"I think he is respected around the world and clearly our greatest-ever player when you think of not only the World Cup, but also winning the European Cup and everything he did at club level," he said.

"Very sad. We were fortunate to have met him a few times and incredibly humble, so, yes, our condolences are with all his family but hopefully we get the chance to honour him at Wembley and it will be a celebration of life."

Euro Qualifiers: Raheem Sterling left out of Harry Kane-led England squad for Malta, North Macedonia clashes

European football’s governing body UEFA has released a statement on the abandoned Belgium vs Sweden contest on Thursday (Oct 19) as the fixture is officially called off and won’t be replayed. This comes after terrorists shot dead two Sweden fans in the Belgium capital of Brussels on Monday, forcing unrest in the stadium. While the match was still on, players refused to come out for the second half, and the fixture was abandoned indefinitely with scores reading 1-1.

<h2>UEFA statement on the tragic incident</h2>

“Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities, that the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is abandoned. Further communication will be made in due course,” a statement on UEFA’s official website read.

The fixture has huge consequences for Sweden as they are still in the bid to make the playoffs for the Euro 2024. They are currently on six points after five matches and could reach a maximum of 15 points if they win all those contests. While an automatic qualification spot is out of hand with Belgium and Poland already through, Sweden could force a playoff berth.

The result of the match is yet to be declared but as things stand, Sweden will hope for a positive outcome with a place in the main tournament up for grabs.

<h2>No matches in Israel</h2>

In other big developments, the ongoing Israel-Hamas war has forced UEFA to avoid staging matches in the Jewish nation. The UEFA has decided to avoid staging matches in Israel for an indefinite period after the deadly attacks caused unrest. This will mean that no Europa League or Europa Conference League matches will be played in the country along with UEFA’s international fixtures in November. However, this won’t rule out Israel or its clubs from playing in the UEFA competitions. Teams will have to use neutral grounds to stage their matches while the nations ride for an important run where they could book a place in the Euro 2024.
